Elie Saab’s Spring/Summer line: Who will be wearing what at the Oscars?

It’s already looking like a crazy slow day, and I was looking through our photo agencies, I noticed that there were lots of runway photos from Paris Fashion Week. Yesterday was the Elie Saab Spring/Summer runway show, and I became enchanted with these gowns. Not that I would wear any of them (Prince Harry still hasn’t called me for a date!), but I’m wondering if several of these gowns might end up on some of the nominees and presenters at the Oscars. These dresses could also end up at the SAG Awards this weekend, although that might cutting it close, fittings-wise. So let’s go through some of my favorite Elie Saab looks! This is a special treat, isn’t it? So, the dress in the header – I love this dress. I love the cut, I love the sleeves, I love the skirt, I love the color. It’s sack-y enough for someone like Angelina Jolie, although she would never wear this pink color. I see it on someone small-chested too – like Olivia Wilde.

Another pink-pink dress, although I don’t like this one as much. It’s too frilly and fussy, when most girls like “clean”. I could see this on a non-pregnant Kate Hudson, or even Jennifer Lopez.

This black, one-shouldered gown is something Rachel Zoe would put on Anne Hathaway. And it would be a mistake on her! I’d like to see an over-40 actress like nominee Annette Bening, or even Susan Sarandon wear this.

Another frilly pink dress, only this one I LOVE. Back in the day, Nicole Kidman would have claimed it. These days, she won’t touch it. I could see it on a non-pregnant Natalie Portman, or even on the younger nominees, like Best Supporting Actress nominee Hailee Steinfeld or Best Actress nominee Jennifer Lawrence. It might be too grown-up for Hailee, though. Or it might be perfect.

This is gorgeous, although yellow-green is HARD. It’s really difficult to pull off. I want to say Amy Adams, but this color might make her look like a corpse. Perhaps on a blonde, like nominee Michelle Williams.

THIS is what Anne Hathaway should be wearing. Sexy, adult, slinky, high-fashion. Plus, Anne has the boobs for it.

pfw_elie_saab_10_wenn3182951

This is the kind of hot mess that Cameron Diaz loves.

pfw_elie_saab_11_wenn3182952

I love this dress too – Elie Saab is doing great stuff with black this year! It could go matronly, depending on the hair and accessories. Annette could end up in something like this, but I suspect it would end up on Michelle Williams.

Ugh, I hate this one, mostly because I suspect bitches will be fighting over it. I can see so many women becoming a fashion disaster in this one, from Anne Hathaway to Nicole Kidman. That detailing at the hips is hideous!

And finally, the wedding look – HATE IT. Looks like a cat barfed up some cotton balls.

What a fab collection (except for the bridal gown). Paris fashion doesn’t usually do much for me but these are real stand-outs. The only thing I would say is that Anne’s-“yes, that’s my poncho covered vadge”-dress needs about six more stiches.

  2. embertine says:

    WAAAAAAAANNNNT

All except the wedding one, which is a little Miss Haversham even for me.

  3. Jack says:

honestly, there is not one dress that could be oscar-worthy! and the dress you liked for anne hathaway.. wow really? it is really trashy with that HIGH slit

  4. Jacq says:

Yes, Anne has the boobs for that dress, but does she have the crotch to pull it off? Must be painfully slow today if you’re doing imaginary stylings.
Too many flesh-tones and fussy ruffles for me. I guess I can make peace with not being able to afford true “designer” duds.

  5. brin says:

I definitely see Angelina in the first gown (in another color), and the one you see for Cameron Diaz I see for Maggie Gyllenhaal.

  6. lucy2 says:

I like #1, 3, 5 and 8. Love the flowing skirts, but don’t like a lot of the ruffly ones, but that’s just me. Have to disagree with you on the one you liked for Anne – I don’t want to see her or anyone else’ crotch, especially not on Oscar night.

  7. Sadie says:

I love the green one, I would wear it.

  8. Happymom says:

I think they’re gorgeous for the most part-but I really hate that pink color-really difficult for most people to pull off unless they’re dark skinned-otherwise you’d look seriously washed out.

  9. Mollyb says:

I covet that cocktail-length pink confection soooo hard.

  10. Kaiser says:

Re: The Hathaway crotch dress – you know that the runway looks are fixed and changed for the red carpet, right? Just because the model’s crotch is being flashed, doesn’t mean the slit will be that high when it gets on an actress.

  11. Vi says:

love love love the yellow green one. it’s so beautiful! would wear it in a heart beat if i had the money, the figure and the event lol

  12. dr_d_2b says:

I’d like to see the green one that’s walking away, with the low back. That first pink dress is just stunning.

  13. Eileen says:

OOOo my faves were the first gown and then the second black with the fitted waist! I love that 2nd black gown! WANT! MINE!

  14. tracking says:

Julianne Moore would look *amazing* in the first black gown (even Julia Roberts, much as it pains me to say it), but does Julianne wear anything other than Lanvin these days? I think she could pull off the yellow-green one too.

  15. gabs says:

I LOVE the yellow-green one. I think all the pink is boring me. I can see Michelle in it too.

“This is the kind of hot mess that Cameron Diaz loves.” LOL

I cant wait to see what Rachel Zoe puts together for Anne. You know shes hosting and will have a bajillion wardrobe changes.Nicole and Natalie will be boring.

That black # is so… well, it would help Anne prove to the Batman fanboys she can be catwoman. They keep fighting she isnt sexy badass enough.

  16. Nanea says:

@ # 12: ditto to seeing that green dress with the low back.

And I will try to get a closer look at that lavender one in the background of that pink one with that fabric mess on the model’s hip.

I’d like # 1 for me in an aqua tone, please.

  17. Hakura says:

“…or even on the younger nominees, like Best Supporting Actress nominee Hailee Steinfeld…

I think Hailee would look *gorgeous* in that dress, but I think you’re right about it being a bit too mature for her. Maybe in a few years. =) I just don’t care for the ruffled look on most of them.

I have an addictive draw to sparkly things… (my mom always says “dead fish.”… because fish respond automatically to shiny fishing lures the same way I do to sequins & rhinestones. xD) But I’m with everyone on the flesh tone colors… i hope if anyone does decide to wear them, they change the colors. Especially pale girls like me. That green-yellow would make someone my skin color look ill.

I do think the black dress would work for Anne, but like other mentioned, only if she has the slit lowered enough to avoid flashing us.

  18. whybenice says:

Chuckled at the wedding gown description. Barfed, then ran its claws through it. Godawful dress.

  19. memory07 says:

omg fabulous collection i love 3,6,7 and 8

  20. WhiteNoise says:

Stunning collection, adore the colours, love everything here, even the cat barfy wedding dress! I can see most of them ending up on the Oscar red carpet but there’s a good chance they won’t end up looking anything like as gorgeous or stylish as above because they’ll be on the wrong people and/or horribly accessorised.

  21. munchies says:

they look great on models and probably with me hehehehe

but when worn by celebrities they looked terrible.

  22. Angel says:

Last black dress is GORGEUS !

  23. InVain says:

I agree, that first dress is GORG. Also, that last black dress is absolutely stunning. I want it – badly.

  24. Lisa Turtle says:

Oh Kaiser, my heart has skipped a beat! PLEASE do more posts like this! I adore this post!!!

My favorite dress is actually the yellow-green, and I think it would look stellar on Cameron Diaz, she really has the height and the build to pull off a high fashion risk like that. I have to say I disagree with you, I don’t see her in the water-colored mullet dress, she tends toward more streamlined looks and solid stronger colors.

I’m perturbed that you think Anne Hathaway should attend the Oscars in a gown with her vadge hanging out! Yikes!!! That first, pinkish nude sparkly dress resembles Anne’s Golden Globes dress. I guess sparkly sacs are in! Angelina Jolie, a trendsetter? who would have thought.

  25. sisi says:

there are some nice shoes on that runway too

  26. original kate says:

love them all, except the wedding gown. reminds me of when you’re hiking and you get little bits of brush/burrs/pollen stuck all over you. i’m not totally in love with the peachy colors because they look bad on me, but that last black dress is to die – seriously, that “edward gorey meets mad men” look is half my closet already.

  27. Cheyenne says:

#1, #6 and #8. Could see Jolie in #1 in a deep blue-green or bright red, and Hathaway in #6.

  28. sakyiwaa says:

@Cheyenne: co-sign :)! and she would totally look fab too.

  29. Rachael says:

The nude colored gowns are stunning as are the black. That green one is as well and would look good on someone with either pale skin/ black hair or someone really tan or ethnic skin.

  30. Rosanna says:

Aaaaw Sheer awesomeness!!! The only stylist I prefer to Elie Saab is the fellow lebanese Zuhair Murad!

  31. lulu says:

well done kaiser, yet another talent.
more please – we love it!

  32. Solveig says:

The first dress would look good on a Michelle Williams with darker hair.
The yellow one would be good on Jessica Alba, but she’s totally uncapable of looking classy AND this gown is too good for the Razzies.
Olivia Wilde would be gorgeous with the sixth.
The eighth would give AJ’s body a hourglass shape (she should wear a corset under it), but she should comb her hair in a classy but modern (not matronly) way.
The last pink one would be good on Julianne Moore, just because it is hideous enough to fit her style.
The wedding gown is… well, ugly and it reminds me of the corpse bride, thus Helena Bonham Carter could wear it.

  33. Megan says:

    They’re all stunning!!

  34. Linda says:

I have to get used to these. There’s just a lot going on there.

  35. Ari says:

I would shove my fat ass right into that green one – GORGEOUS

  36. adtwah says:

They’re all beautiful;it’s hard for me to pick a favorite. I love the first black dress, and the long frilly pink dress. I even like the Cameron Diaz dress with the huge flower. Without the bizarre conical veil, the weddring dress would be fine. The only dress I would absolutely not wear is the dress with the hip flaps.

  37. Hm says:

Who is the model in the “Natalie Portman” and “Michelle Williams” dresses? Love her figure.

  38. Embee says:

Amy Adams in the green – otherwise, spot on.

  39. albeli says:

I love almost all of these (didn’t like the yellow green one or the Cameron Diaz mess), including the cotton ball wedding gown, which I would totally wear.

  40. Marianne says:

I like the first pink dress…and the second pink floral dress…

God what is it with me and pink? Most of the dresses I liked at the Globes this year I liked were pink as well.

  41. Marianne says:

And sorry, I realized I posted “I liked ” twice lol.

  42. I Choose Me says:

Love gowns 1 through 5 and gown number 8. Normally I’m not a fan of the frilly princess look but I got to say the detailing on gown and 4 is gorgeous esp, 4. I think Hailee Steinfeld would look great in gown #2 actually.

1, 4 & 8 are definitely my faves. Truly gorgeous gowns.
