Vanessa Minnillo: Nick Lachey said “I love you” first

Vanessa Minnillo and Nick Lachey haven’t been on vacation for a while, or if they have they decided not to invite photographers after that pesky hot tub incident, so we haven’t heard much about them. Both have jobs now, which could also explain why they’re not holed up drinking margaritas at some tropical resort. Nick, 34, is hosting the teen reality competition show “High School Musical: Get in The Picture,” which airs on Mondays on ABC. The ratings have been poor and it’s likely the show isn’t going to stick around after this season. Vanessa, 27, has a role in the film Disaster Movie, which is out on Friday. She’s talking about her relationship with Nick in relation to her cheerleader character’s boyfriend, and says that Nick is open emotionally and was the first to say “I love you.”

In Disaster Movie, hitting theaters Friday, Minnillo’s cheerleader character just can’t get her boyfriend to say “I love you.”

“He just can’t drop the L-word,” Minnillo, 27, tells PEOPLE of her character’s commitment-challenged boyfriend. “And what a girl wants more than anything in the world is for their boyfriend to say ‘I love you.’ ”

But, says Minnillo, her real-life beau Nick Lachey, 34, doesn’t have any similar hang-ups: “The L-word is not thrown around by men as easily as it is by women – but I didn’t say it first! He’s very loving. We’re very open and vocal.”

[From People.com]

I remember Nick on that Newlyweds show, and he arranged an incredibly romantic anniversary night for his then-wife Jessica Simpson. They had a private dinner at a NY city restaurant, then retired to a hotel suite decorated with candles and rose petals. It ultimately didn’t last for them, but it seemed like Nick did his best. You would expect him to be the type to say “I love you” first, and he seems like the rare type of guy who is thoughtful and loyal without being sappy about it. Minnillo is lucky to have landed him.

I asked my husband if he remembered who was the first one of us to say the L word when we first got together and he couldn’t remember! I think it was him, but I’m not sure. It really doesn’t matter considering the outcome. Do you remember who was the first to say “I love you” in your relationship? Maybe it depends on how momentous it was at the time, if you both waited a long time for it, and how long you’ve been together.

Do you remember who was the first to say β€œI love you” in your relationship?

NO! I can’t believe it but I seriously can’t remember either! ‘Course we’ve been together 20 years, married for 18 of that so I’ll agree – the outcome is what matters (although I’ll have to ask him if HE remembers) πŸ˜†

    Nick and Vanessa. Booooorrrrrring.

  3. elisha says:

    My man said it first.

Considering all the HSM hype, I’m suprised anything having to do with it is getting poor ratings.

I like Nick, I hope things work out for him the way he wants them to… whether that’s with Vanessa or not.

  4. Syko says:

It was my ex who said it first. And last. He wanted me to kiss him goodbye in the divorce courtroom. Gag me.

It’s been my experience that guys will say a lot in the heat of the moment. It’s how they treat you that counts, not what they say.

  5. geronimo says:

True, Syko. Actions speaking louder than words and all that…

From what you’ve said about your ex, sounds like a ‘Glasgae kiss’ would have been more appropriate…

  6. Bodhi says:

The Boy said it first & it was so cute! But he is WAY more romantic than I am & it makes him crazy!

I went to high school with Vannessa. She was a total bitch most of the time & looking back on it, I guess she was just meant to be in the spotlight

  7. Nouvel says:

My partner said it first.. and I loved it, she is so very sweet.

  8. Syko says:

Ahh, geronimo – we all have the same exes.

Bodhi – was Vanessa a cheerleader? She just looks like that type. Grrrrrr.

  9. AnonymousMe says:

How sweet. My fiance said it first. OUR WEDDING DAY IS MAY 17, 2009!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Bodhi says:

Syko~ She was THE cheerleader. πŸ™„ Geez, & when she won Miss Teen USA she was completely insufferable!

But what 17 year old girl wouldn’t be?

  11. czarina says:

OK, I never saw the Newlyweds show…but how romantic could anything be that is being filmed by a camera crew???

  12. KDRockstar says:

My husband said it first, and also told me (and others) that he was going to marry me. We weren’t dating at the time, so it was a pretty bold assumption.

13 kids and 2 years later (scratch that, reverse it), and still knockin’ it Matthew McConaughy’s mom’s style.

  13. SolitaryAngel says:

    HE said it first!

    No, SHE said it first!

    No, HE said it first!

    πŸ™„

My ex said it first, and I kicked him out of my house (we weren’t living together) because it was too soon, I thought. Looking back, I should have kept it at that!! LOL Ah, hindsight, eh?

  14. Codzilla says:

I said it first. I also asked him out and after we had been together for nearly two years, I looked at him one day and said “So are we gonna get married or what?”

  15. gracie says:

Nick and Vanessa are very, very boring.
Plain vanilla. (I cast no aspersions to vanilla lovers out there)

I might have been the only one who was happy about the whole “sex in the hot tub” story because FINALLY they’d done something that got my attention!

    I admit…that was kinda hot.

  16. RhymesWithSilver says:

I was psyching myself up to say it one day, and then he took the words right out of my mouth. Best. Thing. Ever.

  17. Cletus says:

HE DID. And then he had to wait for a while for me to say it back because I wanted to be sure that I meant it. And he never bugged me about it, not once. Which is why I totally love him all the time.

  18. Kat says:

Who cares?? He probably said it first, just to get SEX.

  19. vdantev says:

    Not true !!

    SO not True !!

Nick says it every morning- to his reflection in the mirror.
