Country singer Carrie Underwood, 25, and world record-setting Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, 23, have been talking on the phone and texting back and forth. They haven’t met yet but they’re planning a date to take place in Nashville soon. Phelps is said to have heard that Underwood called him “cute” and that paved the way for the two to get in touch.
[Michael Phelps] is totally smitten with Carrie after her heard that she thought he was “cute,” say sources at the 2008 Olympics. They began texting and calling one another while Michael was still in Beijing and have already made plans to get together in Nashville, near where Carrie lives. Carrie suggested “a quiet dinner” as a first date, said the source.
“But Michael laughed and said, ‘I’m not so sure that you’d want to see me eat! It might not make a good first impression.’”

That’s cute that he said he doesn’t want her to see him eat. The Enquirer reminds us that Phelps has to consume 12,000 calories a day while he’s in training to keep up his energy. That’s more than a lot of people eat in a whole week.
I don’t really see how this guy is so attractive. He is an amazing and heroic athlete who demonstrates triumph of will and deserves to be lauded. He’s not a traditionally good looking guy when he puts a shirt on, though. I don’t see him lasting with Carrie or it going beyond a first date or two. She comes off as petty to me, and she’s clearly not over her failed relationship with Tony Romo given some of the things she’s said about him. Phelps just doesn’t seem like her type. That said, JayBird is single and open to giving the guy a chance despite his physical oddities.

Look at their two faces in the header image – they’re very similar. Similar face shape, similar noses, similar chins. I find that people who look alike are often attracted to each other.

Oh, I think he’s a cutie pie. I can say he’s not “conventionally” attractive, but he’s got a great smile, lots of life and intelligence in his eyes, and you know he’s honest and dedicated and disciplined and all kinds of things that go with being a top-notch athlete.
That said, I wouldn’t wish a high-profile relationship on him like this. I hope he finds someone awesome to date who is slightly more out of the public eye….

I think he’s adorable. And athletic prowess is hot, I don’t care what your face looks like. I bet he cleans up in the “tail” department, no problem. And if you’ve ever seen that shot of him modeling the Speedo LZR Racer, you know he’s got plenty of other, uh, assets to make up for his “unconventional” face.

She sure seems to go for the guys with those odd shaped ears. Look at Tony Romo and Michael Phelps, they both have ears that immediately get your attention. With their swim hat and helmet on, they’re not too bad, but take those items off… blech!

I agree CandyKay! I have been saying for years that people who are attracted to each other often have similar features. I’ve always thought that was the reason Tom Cruise was so nutty about Katie. He’s such a narcissist that it was love at first sight.

couldnt agree with you more kolby. genius is attractive, no matter if it is physical or mental and that can make up for a less conventional face. phelps has (evolutionarily speaking) all the traits that women would find attractive and make him a good mate: he is tall, extremely well built, has success and money, seems warm hearted and loves his momma. uglier, less well built, and less accomplished guys have gotten way hotter girls before. i’d say carrie underwood is the ‘underdog’ in this equation, meaning phelps literally could have his pick of women right now (amanda grossness beard notwithstanding) and hes choosing her, so underwood should be stoked to ride that stallion while he’s still interested in her.

Any girl dating him would have to be OK with being #3 in his life, no’s. 1 and 2 being swimming and his mom. Which is not to say that I think he’s a mama’s boy – she raised him as a single parent and her care and devotion helped him to become what he is today – of course their bond is extremely close. Michael Phelps is every mother’s dream.
I read somewhere that he was bullied as a child. Now that he’s famous I hope the world will be kind to him.

when my friend told me the news, i did not take a second to think to look it up on google.
then i stumbled upon this.
honestly, i think its a lie.
according to the article, michael and “that girl” would “constantly txt and call each other while he was in beijing”.
that makes NO SENSE at all because while michael was in beijing, he was TOO conncentrated on his race; his mom didnt even get to talk to him, until that semi-hug when he won his 8th gold.
and right after that he went straight to london.
i dont think he would actually let himself be distracted off his race (i mean, he’s making history here !)just because of some “girl”.
