Jude Law makes humanitarian trip to Afghanistan

Jude Law is really turning out to be an alright guy. Despite having cheated on his now-ex-wife Sadie Frost with Sienna Miller (pretty much the lowest of all people with whom you can cheat) several years ago, Law seems to have quietly turned a page. Law is heading to Kabul for the second time as part of the United Nation’s annual International Day of Peace on September 21st.

“Please mark the day,” Law, an ambassador for Peace One Day, said at a news conference Monday. “The need now is greater than ever before.” Law arrived in Kabul along with film producer Jeremy Gilley, bringing with them The Day After Peace, their documentary on Afghanistan that culminates in last year’s ceasefire event, to further promote the nonviolent effort. Law went on to say he was not expecting the war to end on his count, but that they were hoping, as before, to take advantage of a “pause” in the fighting.

“And if that pause is simply to allow, as we did in last year’s call for action here, vaccinating children or bringing in food…then let’s use that… What we hope to do…is remind all parties that it is happening and see then what happens through negotiations.” According to the Peace One Day organization, last year’s Day of Peace resulted in roughly 1.4 million children receiving inoculations and helped establish a mass polio vaccination program in Afghanistan, reaching children they otherwise would not have been able to as they are living in Taliban-controlled areas.

Law and Gilley premiered The Day After Peace, a 10 years in the making documentary on the nation culminating in last year’s Day of Peace, at the Cannes Film Festival in May. The film features appearances by Angelina Jolie, Jonny Lee Miller, Annie Lennox, Kofi Annan and the Dalai Lama.

Pretty hard to argue with that. I’m a really big fan of celebrities who use their fame to bring about some sort of good. It doesn’t really matter how big or small or what their reasons are. If it in some way helps the less fortunate, more power to anyone who does something.

Here’s Jude Law and Jeremy Gilley at theCannes photoshoot for “The day after Peace,” on May 20th. Images thanks to Fame.

I thought he cheated on SIENNA with the nanny, not on Sadie with Sienna.

Diva, I’m pretty sure he cheated on everyone with everyone. That said, he’s just delicious!

Jaybird, I think you’re wrong with the timeline. I believe Jude & Sadie had already seperated when he met Sienna. If anything, the gossip was that Jude cheated on Sadie with Nicole Kidman, while they were making Cold Mountain.

But good for Jude for the humanitarian trip. Props.

  5. Go Jude! I’m glad he discovered the joys of humanitarian travel. It’s an awesome way to see exotic locales, expand and diversify your base of friends, gain a more accurate worldview, but most of all just have a blast helping people! I’ve been on quite a few humanitarian trips around the world; I would recommend everyone give it a shot at least once in their life.
