Mackenzie Phillips goes to rehab for 10th time; charged with felony drug possession

One Day at a Time former teen star Mackenzie Phillips, 48, was busted at the LA airport last week with heroin and cocaine. The drugs were found in her possession as she tried to pass through security and it turns out they weren’t in her hand luggage as we reported earlier, but were in her pants. She got nervous during a routine patdown and told security personnel that she had drugs, saying “I’m holding.” It is also rumored that packets and balloons of drugs fell out of her pocket during the search. It’s hard to tell from reports if she gave herself away or if the drugs were found before she confessed.

Phillips has been charged with two counts of felony drug possession for the cocaine and heroin she was carrying along with a misdemeanor charge for a hypodermic needle. She has now entered rehab for the 10th time. US Weekly reminds us of some statements she’s made in the past about what a difficult and chaotic childhood she had as the daughter of a rock star:

Phillips, 48, was fired from the sitcom One Day at a Time because of her drug addiction 26 years ago.

As a kid, she says she prepared joints for her dad, John Phillips, the founder of the band, the Mamas and the Papas.

“I grew up in mansions, but everything was dirty and broken,” she told USA Weekend magazine in 1999. “Very little was going on inside except sex, drugs and rock and roll.”

Early on, she knew she had a problem.

“The first time I had a drink, it woke up the sleeping monster inside me,” she said.

The actress blew through her $47,500 weekly salary from her sitcom by buying drugs, and soon found herself searching for quarters to buy food.

In 1994, she turned her life around, appearing as a drug counselor on 90210. A few years later, she also starred on Disney show So Weird, saying the network’s producers, “embraced [her] baggage.”

“Why did I survive?” she asked in USA Weekend. “Maybe it’s to say to others, ‘This happened to me. It could happen to you.’ I don’t mind being a poster girl.”

The actress, who most recently appeared in a 2007 episode of Cold Case, has a son, Shane, 21.

That’s really rough and maybe this will be the wakeup call she needs to get clean. Do any of you have relatives or friends who can’t kick hard drugs no matter what they’re going through? Do they go through periods of sobriety where it looks like they’re ok, only to relapse again? It must be very difficult for their family and the people who care about them.

Can we please put her in jail now? Maybe if her Papa had been thrown in the slammer for underage sex, or all the drugs he was happy to do publicly his daughter wouldn’t be so fucked up.

Stop handing spoiled shit children of infamous idiots with kid gloves. Give them the same punishment a gang-banger from south Chicago would get for his 10th go round.

WTF is up with all the damn coddling of addicts, liars and general all-around skuzzballs? 🙄

  2. xiaoecho says:

No-one could ever call her a quitter

  3. geronimo says:

This is the reality of addiction, how it is for literally millions of people. Hope she comes out the other side but sadly this type of long-term addiction more often than not, ends in early, miserable death. Wish her well.

  4. Leandra says:

If you’re 48 and are going to Rehab for the 10th time to “cure” your addiction to heroin and coke, the reality is it doesn’t look good for a long healthy life in the future.

  5. Savannah says:

If she hadn’t been caught with the drugs, she’d be strung out right now on the drugs she was carrying. Sad case.

  6. Codzilla says:

    Damn, she looks rough.

  7. WTF?!?! says:

“maybe this will be the wakeup call she needs to get clean.”

Tenth time’s the charm? I think not.

  8. Baholicious says:

They say “third time’s a charm”, maybe for Mackenzie it’s multiples of 3…

  9. GoGo LaTata says:

    Loved her in American Graffiti.

  10. Gracie says:

All things considered, she looks pretty good at 48. How utterly sad that she is still an addict.

  11. smarter than you says:

if you’re ever dumb enough to put heroin into your body then you deserve the horrible addiction that comes with it.. i’ve been close to many heroin addicts, and even loved one….i don’t think anything could ever be more painful than trying to save somebody that doesn’t even care about themselves… have fun making fun of these people at your expense… just makes me, and anyone with experience with this horrible disease, even more sure that you’re a F*cking cunt

  12. Kat says:

10th time ??? Don’t waste the time or money. Go to jail, like everybody else. Maybe she will have a Jesus moment behind bars.

  13. Jeanne says:

Why bother anymore with rehab after ten attempts? Leave her alone if she wants to be an addict. Not everyone can be cured. Live and let live.

  14. ANN says:

The fact is that if she really wants to clean up she should look to God for help. With His help she would be able to accomplish anything.

  15. Tina says:

The sad thing is she needs to want the help and it doesn’t sound like she does. Come on think about it. If she didn’t like the drugs would she be doing them?

  16. Jaime says:

God won’t ever give up on her! It takes as many times as it takes! No one has the right to stand as judge, jury and executioner! It’s always SO much easier to clean off someone else’s back porch…

Dear Mackenzie you need to go to rehab in another state away from everyone you know it is clear your family and friends are no help or this would not be your 10th trip. Drug addictive people hang with drug addictive people and no one is there to help you stay off because they are users also. GET HELP.
