Black Eyed Peas’ SuperBowl half-time performance: meh or okay?

peas1

Am I the only person in the world who thinks that the Black Eyed Peas are completely overrated? Like, I don’t even consider their music to be pop music and radio-friendly. They always sound so disorganized and disjointed to me. Of course, I listen to lots of classic rock and folk crap, so maybe that’s the problem. If you like the Peas, I guess you considered their Halftime performance as a career highlight…?

Yeah… I still don’t get it. When I watched Nine, I had a moment of clarity that Fergie has an incredible voice, and I think it’s really passive-aggressive of Will.I.am to never let her really sing. They always make her do that garbled half-rap thing. Ugh. I did like it when Usher came out though – maybe Usher should have done the whole Halftime show?

we were rolling with laughter at the performance, it was soooo bad. the ‘sweet child o mine’ song fergie sang was just horrible. did these people even practice beforehand? thank goodness for usher though

  2. l says:

i thought they were ok, but the REAL problem I had was the equipment/engineering (is that what it is?). How much time and money was put into all of that? I feel like that part was a BIG FAIL. So, I’m not sure what percentage BEP get on the FAIL scale and how much should be blamed on the technical part

What did you guys think of the Eminem Detroit commercial? I thought it was SO GOOD! He continues to go higher and higher in my book. Love him!.

  3. Donna Wingfield says:

I turned off the sound because the performance was so loud and tuneless. The jumping around was annoying, and what was up with Fergie’s extra-wide-legged stance? Meh.

  4. Sarah says:

Halftime was a freaking JOKE. That performance wasn’t meh or okay, it was down right HORRIBLE.

  5. David says:

    The worst audio ever.

  6. Marjalane says:

I was waiting for this post; Fergie sucked with a bullet last night! Whoever encouraged her to do “Sweet Child of Mine” ought to be punished. I don’t even know why the other two “peas” even bothered to show up- between Fergie’s strutting and hair tossing, and will i am hogging the singing, they were looking like glittery back up dancers. If ever there was a moment for Kanye West to jump into the middle of a performance this was it- unfortunately we got Usher doing his best Michael Jackson impersonation instead. I’m glad the game was so exciting because the half time show sucked hard!

  7. irena NL says:

HORRIBLE…that BEP is soooo over-rated. My! what a studio can do.

  8. Marjalane says:

Had to comment on your post- LOVED the Eminem Detroit commercial!! I used to live in Detroit and they really showed all the best of it last night in that one commercial- really classy and well done.

  9. Jen says:

I’ve honestly never understood all the Fergie hate. She seems like she does what she’s asked to do and works hard.

  10. Ferguson. says:

As a Black Eyed Peas fan, I HATE THEIR NEW MUSIC. When I first started listeing to them (circa 2003) I loved them because they were UNIQUE, their lyrics MEANT something. I was a rock-fan then, so listening to them opened my mind to other genres of music. Besides, I fell in love with Fergie’s voice instantly.

Now I’m more of a Fergie fan than a BEP fan (SHE HAS TO JOIN A ROCK BAND, damn everytime she comes on stage with Slash… they blow my mind), but still… I have all of their cds and I can tell you that not ALL OF THEIR NEW SONGS are bad.

-Please please please, listen to the cover song of Paradise City by Slash, Fergie and Cypress Hill, it’s amazing. Also to the cover of Barracuda (by Heart) sung by Ferg, damn I LOVE HER-

  11. Sassy says:

They killed it. And not in a good way.

    FAIL.

If there was a “wardrobe malfunction” or Fergie peed her pants again, might have made it slightly better. At least more interesting. And I was hoping Usher ripped his pants when he did the splits. Is that so wrong? Ha.

  12. Kimble says:

Do they actually do a sound check? Audio was awful!

  13. B W says:

P.U. Was beyond horrible. The last decent halftime show was Prince.

  14. Erin says:

    Yep. It sucked.

  15. mimi says:

Usher SAVED that half ass performance! (And he wasn’t even all that vocally)

  16. mia girl says:

    #2 & #8
Loved the Eminem Detroit Chrysler Commercial. It had real heart and I loved that he stood to represent his city.

As far as halftime – I agree, wish Usher had done the whole thing.

  17. K says:

I was not a fan. The audio was all whack, they didn’t sound great, the one arm of stage for LOVE was out, the dancers seemed too gaudy. Not impressed.

The whole time I wanted the Who back. They weren’t in top shape, but considering half the original memebers (who are in their 60s) were able to put on the show they did, was astoundingly more successful then the BEPs. Last year, the whole stadium could be heard singing along! This year? Meh.

  18. devilgirl says:

I like the BEP’s but last night I was embarrassed for them. They sounded awful!

    PACKERS!

  19. WTF? says:

I think that Fergie might have ruined her voice with the drugs. Because if you listen to her early work she really did have a beautiful voice. It’s sad. It’s like Whitney Houston. They have this amazing talent, and then they are careless with it.

But why do you think that will.i.am has the power to make her do something that she doesn’t want to do? In every interview I’ve seen her in, she seems like she doesn’t take any crap from anybody.

  20. seVen says:

They were so bad my dogs ran and hid their faces. I like Fergie but she has no bidness trying to cover a G&R Song. Slash was the best part of that whole mess. Oh and the dancers with those glowing costumes they rocked. Over all it was a suck fest and who ever thought BEP was a good idea needs to be fired.

  21. Judy says:

Glad it wasn’t just me who thought it was beyond horrid and tuneless.

  22. MSat says:

They should just bring back U2 and Paul McCartney for every half time show from now on. This year’s show was nothing short of a completely embarrassing mess. Pathetic.

  23. QUEST says:

I really like the BEP, although I am not a “fan”, but the sound quality left me cringing. I honestly was expecting more from them so it was disappointing for me sound wise.

PS. Love my “Eminem” commercial, he keeps getting better.

  24. Riley says:

I don’t think this group is meant for live performances. I kind of felt that sense of embarassment I felt when Ashlee Simpson performed at the Superbowl. Fergie sounded like an American Idol act that Simon would have criticized heavily. And the men in the group sounded equally as bad. I am really starting to dislike Will.i.am. Ushers dancing was fantastic and they had a great marching band that was fun to watch. What an honor for the marching band, not so much playing with BEP but to play the Superbowl. I still can’t get the screetching sounds of Fergie trying to sing like Axl Rose out of my head and it is making my head hurt.

  25. PJ says:

Visually it was stunning. It reminded me of the opening of the Bejing Olympics.

The audio was bad. Is this what their voices really sound like? Eek!

  26. TXCinderella says:

I love the Black Eyed Peas on CD. Live, not so much.

  27. DogBoy says:

Who’d have thought Lea Michele would turn in the best performance?
    Xtina = botch
Black Eyed Peas = disjointed mess
    Usher = OhMyGosh.. really?

The Peas should be happy the lightsuits were out when they were performing.. MAYBE people were watching the lightsuits,

  28. Chrissy says:

The audio didn’t seem to start working correctly until they were half-way through. How many millions were spent on that half time show and the audio was THAT messed up?? Someone needs to lose a job. As for the performance, the Black Eyed Peas didn’t seem very into it. There was little excitement coming from them until after Usher came out. After Usher’s performance, I wondered too if he shouldn’t have been the headliner for the event. I loved all the dancers on the field … thought that part was really cool. Overall, the audio was the biggest screw-up. Without those problems, I think it would have been a GREAT show.

  29. Jen says:

For what it was, it was ok. I would think performing at the Super Bowl would SUCK. First of all, yea, you rehearse but then your stage and sound system gets taken down and hauled off for the game. A huge crew comes in and slams it back together in a few minutes. Good luck with that…

And the noise is deafening. For a highly produced group like the peas, this had to be difficult to pull off. I think that is why Fergie sounded like she was shrieking half the time. She couldn’t hear the backing track and was basically hitting the middle and belting it to cover. She sounded particularly terrible during “Where is the Love?”

Groups like The Who and the Rolling Stones played jacked-up venues enough in their time that they can perform through set and sound difficulties.

Whose bright idea was it to have the dancers wear ice cubes on their heads at the end? Looked stupid..

  30. kelbear says:

My favorite halftime show was the one with Aerosmith, Nsync, Britney, Nelly and Mary J Blige. It was a lot of fun, I miss those days.

  31. mln76 says:

I never like the Halftime show it’s usually either bloated old rockers that depress me or cheesy half naked “hip” bands for grandma. This somehow managed to combine the worst of both worlds. Who on earth told Fergie she could butcher Sweet Child O’Mine? As for the Black Eyed Peas they sold out a long time ago and are now seriously just phoning in their performance for the paycheck.

  32. guesty says:

Fergie was horrible throughout. The rest of it was just okay.

  33. Marie says:

@ghostbuster that is exactly what we were doing laughing at them. I will never listen to Sweet Child of Mine the same way ever again. When Usher came out we were hooting at hollering, bless that man. As for the Black Eyed Peas FAIL FAIL FAIL.

  34. Isabel says:

I was a little confused as to why the Black Eyed Peas were in the spotlight, yet again. With songs from 2003. I didn’t even watch past the first 3 minutes.

  35. gabs says:

I like BEP during the monkey business or elephant era. The new Bep sucks. Still love Fergie better as a solo act. Remember clumsy and big girls dont cry?

I agree that usher would have been better as the headliner.

OMG the Eminem detroit chrysler ad was the best of the night by far

  36. Raven Sparrow says:

All this did was remind me how great the Guns n’ Roses were! I was actually missing Axl.

  37. Mindy says:

all I want to know is why did Will.i.am need autotune to stay MONOTONE?

Was completely awful. If you weren’t watching, EVERYTHING was off-key (honestly, people hear more with their eyes than their ears). They should give it up already.. no more big half time shows.

    EPIC FAIL.

  38. LittleFATMe says:

As a whole, BEP did alright – my mother called to tell me she LOVES Fergie. Fergie sucked and it was at a nuclear level of suckage when she was trying so hard to slut arou8nd the stage and singing with Slash. No girl, no.
I wanted to sit her down and be like, “You are Stacy from Kids Incorporated you are better than this! Remember that time you have to sing with AC Slater to save your club – PULL IT TOGETHER!”
Usher was awesome and I love him and would have liked to see more!

  39. e says:

I didn’t think it was that bad. The sound was terrible but I think it has to do with all the things people have already mentioned. Unlike a lot of pop stars, I actually think Fergie can sing. She didn’t lip sync and it was probably hard for her to hear herself. I loved the visuals.

  40. Justaposter says:

I thought it was a fun half time show.. but heck, after Xtina’s mess.. maybe made them look better?

  41. InVain says:

Thought it SUCKED! Best part was Usher…wish he did the whole thing, dancing around in his perfectly jerky way. Love him…also, how does he not age?

  42. kayls says:

Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but if someone wants to entertain me, I wanna see some dancing. They just stood there half-talking and half-singing, trying to look all ‘fierce’. The real stars were the dancers in white suits!

    @mindy – LOL!

  43. luls says:

shit i only listened to 27 secs of this and ALREADY, iv had enough!!

  44. nycmom10024 says:

Lordy be! Everybody posting today is sooo cranky this morning, Jeez you all hated the Black Eyed Peas, You hated Cam Diaz and A-Rod. Anybody like anything?

  45. Justaposter says:

Well Nycmom10024, A community college dance troup were performing during the half time. They come to all of the fund raisers that the school my children attend, so I liked that part.

  46. kate says:

I agree. Dont like them, the halftime show was terrible. What is the purpose of the other two? only will.i.am and fergie do anything…

  47. nycmom10024 says:

LOL @Justaposter thanks for that. I love gossip sites (as evidenced by the fact I am her and post nearly everyday to something) But every post just seems so cranky today. Maybe we all need more sunny days.

  48. Nancy says:

From the moment they announced that they were gonna do the Super Bowl I KNEW they were gonna suck.

  49. MarkyMark says:

@Ferguson. You are totally right about their earlier music back in 2003, but when die hards complained about them selling out some the BEP’s went into a snit about who’s going to pay the bills while they continue to be “ARTISTS”
So now we have a shell of what once was a Creative force

  50. Cinderella says:

Perla should kick Fergie in the stomach for that mess.

  51. Natalie says:

the performance/dance acts were not that bad…but fergies voice was HORRIBLE!!

  52. Delta Juliet says:

My husband bitched thru the ENTIRE performance and I felt the need to defend BEP because I was tired of hearing him lol But yeah, it did suck. And what was so great about Usher? The dancing was great but did he even sing?

  53. jover says:

The black eyed peas are to music what ozone is to the atmosphere – completely destructive. If a band can’t perform live, even in challenging venues, they aren’t muscians – Woodstock and stadium rock from the 70s anyone. The peas are corporate shills and deflect criticism with their political yakking (anyone catch the pointless reference to Obama); I think these halftime shows should be canceled – bring in four marching bands two from D1 schools one from a D2 school and one from a historical black college – give them each 4 minutes. Hands down it would be better than this corporate junk – how do the Peas even look at themselves in the mirror after that – bet they’ll cash their checks.

  54. Trippin says:

I liked the pretty lights and colors. BEP never sound good live plus we’re all soooo used to lip-synching now. I think Fergie has a good voice and must have fun being surrounded by all her guys. She’s a pro, works hard, admitted to drug use, never lied about it. She was great at the Princes’ concert in memory of Diana. They always pick old past it groups for the Superbowl anyway. No matter who they get people are always bitching about it. I usually ff past 1/2 time anyway, it’s about football!!!!!!

  55. kg says:

    it was cool

  56. jen34 says:

I loved Slash. That’s about it. And I nominate him for Hot Guy Friday.

  57. original kate says:

her face certainly has a lot of fillers. allegedly.

  58. Listerino says:

The audio was terrible, the singing was terrible – especially when Fergie massacred Sweet Child of Mine. I knew beforehand that Fergie can’t sing live so I wasn’t expecting much. Usher barely sang and like others have said was just trying on is Michael Jackson moves.
The whole thing was terrible. Really really bad.

  59. K says:

@nycmom: I liked the football. Loved looking at all the butts, biceps and beards! I’m cranky because I didn’t have Matthews’ treeroot arms rocking me to sleep while I patted Rodger’s buns and Kiesel’s beard. With Palamalu’s hair covering me like a blanket.

  60. Mtn Girl says:

Watched the Super Bowl with friends, we all agreed that BEP performance sucked big time. Horrible sound, vocals and bringing in Slash and Usher just highlighted BEP’s extremely limited range and talent. Fergie’s take on Axel was a laughable moment though, next to Cammie feeding A-Rod of course!

  61. garvels says:

I was never a big Blacked Eyed Peas fan. Their music is studio created because it is more Techno Rock. I think Fergie has a great voice after I saw her in Nine. She should become a solo artist to highlight her distinctive voice.

  62. bluhare says:

Never really cared for Black Eyed Peas, but I think you guys are a bit harsh. They sang live, as opposed to most half time acts. So the sound wasn’t great because of the stadium and maybe someone didn’t do their job to start with, but it definitely was a spectacle which is what the Super Bowl wants.

  63. geekylove says:

it was bad. really, really bad. i was embarrassed for them. and fr the people who pay to see and HEAR them live.
the men have no talent except for words. fergie has a voice, but can’t use it properly. everything else just pointed to these facts.

  64. Lady LaLa says:

    Good Show… Bad Audio

  65. Dawm says:

I really liked it aside from the terrible acoustics. There are few acts today that I can sit and watch and enjoy with my kids. These guys are a class act, bad sound system. Perhaps you all would have rather watched that pig Rihanna.

  66. Tomas says:

The sound/audio/mixing had absolute nothing to do with the horrible performance, IT WAS THE OUT OF TUNE SCREECHING COMING FROM THE BEP’S THEMSELVES THAT RUINED THE ENTIRE SHOW.

  67. anons says:

seriously. given that they’ve been performing these same songs for some time now, you’d expect them to be more fluid. the choreography reminds me of a preschool dance recital when the teacher stands on the floor in front of the stage and directs with hand signals. you could pretty much see them counting beats. that and, while she has some decent pipes, fergie just tries way too hard.

  68. Aries_Mira says:

    It. Was. Awful.

  69. LunaT says:

When did using auto tune become art? The SB should have Bruce Springsteen perform every year.

  70. JenJen says:

Every time I see her I think about her saying she pissed her pants on stage once jumping around.

  71. the original bellaluna says:

Fergie has the best “live performance” voice of the entire group. At least girlfriend can carry a tune live. Can’t say that for the rest of BEP.

@ JenJen – That would have been at Street Scene in the Gaslamp Quarter performance a few years ago. I live in S.D. and that was news FOR WEEKS around here!

  72. Boey Jellodonna says:

Brutally awful, chanting sub-nursery rhymes while thousands of gay men twitch and gyrate with boxes on their heads. “Boom Boom Pow”, gee, how innovative and clever. This is the result of letting a bunch of jocks book musical acts. The whole thing was one long cringe.

  73. KB_explosion says:

    fergie live….JUST NO

in a studio, the girl has quite a malleable voice, she can emote whatever she needs for the song and can sell it. BUT WHAT GOOD IS THAT IF YOU’RE A BAND THAT PERFORMS LIVE?
OK OK, on CD they are great (is that really saying much?) but live!?!? i wanted to go all van gough on my earholes. thank god i was switching back and forth between the puppybowl/kittybowl and this hot mess.

  74. MissyA says:

I wouldn’t know. I was too amped up from the game to sit and watch the Blackeyed Pees (heh). I spent my halftime smoking a bowl and playing football!

(Glad to hear they actually did play “Sweet Child Of Mine”. I thought I heard it in the background, but I chalked it up to really kind bud.)

Such an awesome game though. . . I cried and called my dad when the Pack clinched it. And my boyfriend won MVP. . . So proud of my team!

GO PACK GO!! (and NO MEANS NO – Rothlisberger!)

  75. orianne says:

    @ kb_explosion: Van GOGH gee
this so called band should go away, forever

  76. The Bobster says:

Sub-meh. That autotuned crap just won’t work live.

  77. Stephy D says:

@ Kelbear. I totally agree with you. I miss those days too!!!

  78. Nikki says:

Fergie is a nasty, nasty she-man, she’s had so much plastic surgery her face look like the Joker Jack Nicholson-era. GROSS. And that whole performance was pretty bad all around except for the people dancing with the lights on, I liked how they made formations. Everyone else was awful.

  79. Dini says:

This group has zero talent! At best, they can be categorized as karaoke singers. Their lyrics are beyond infantile that it’s laughable and Will i am is ridiculous with that computerized singing he does. Um, has he come out yet? Who is he fooling? I can’t believe that we accept this amateur act as talent.

All they do is jump up and down, “rap” (I use that term very loosely) or scream their lyrics. Basically, anyone can do that! I wonder what real singers say about these impersonators. My God, you don’t have to have talent these days. All you have to do is show T&A, skin, dress like prostitutes and dress like a woman if you are a man.

  80. Reece says:

it was the performance that would never end gah!

  81. Glohearts says:

How many members of the BEP are there? From where I sat it looked like only 1 and a half. They should share the load, they maybe better for it.

  82. Shelby Etterline says:

FERGIES HAIRY ARMS!! Did anyone else notice?? The backlighting behind her onstage made the fuzz all on her arms totally visible! Ughh!!! And looked like as she raised her arms up several times, her pits were not taken care of like she’s shown in the past eeww…..what’s up with this girl????

  83. colt13 says:

I’ve had the time of my life. That was so bad, Will.i.am sounded like Kermit the Frog.

I will cut Christina a little slack for the main reason that we know she wasn’t lip synching.

The irony of Fergie butchering Axl’s song-and dance, is that back in her Wild Orchid days, she could hit the notes like Christina, not just sing the baby voiced My Humps stuff.

  84. dovesgate says:

I don’t blame the BEP’s. I blame whoever is in charge of booking the halftime talent. If you’re doing a live show, book someone who CAN SING LIVE, not some autotuned mess that falls apart on stage. Audition them! Review concert tapes! Do your damn homework so America’s ears don’t leak blood for the second half!

  85. diane says says:

    PUT YOUR HANDS UP{SCREAM]
    SINGING WAS TERRIBLE
    AUDI WAS TERRIBLE
    SOUND WAS TERRIBLE
    TRULY SICK OF AUTOTUNED CRAP
USHER; DID HE SINGING AND DANCE{DON’T REMENBER
JUSTIN BIEBER SAID THAT USHER AND BEP KILL IT; HE WOULD KNOW HE’S ALSO LIMITED IN TALENT IT WAS AND AMATEUR ACT………………

  86. crtb says:

Lordy be! Everybody posting today is sooo cranky this morning,Anybody like anything?

I liked them!!! They sang all of my favorite songs,

  87. crtb says:

FERGIES HAIRY ARMS!! The backlighting behind her onstage made the fuzz all on her arms totally visible! Ughh!!! eeww…..what’s up with this girl????

What’s Up With You? Since when are women supposed to be totally hairless? You don’t have hair on your arms? I do! I can’t stand when people critize others for people human.

  88. mimi says:

The whole performance reminded me of the TRON movie with all the funky outfits and strobe lights

  89. Shelby Etterline says:

    FERGIE NEEDED A SHAVE!!
