The ring is nice from an heirloom perspective but for the most part the engagement ring is for other women. People tend to mistake size for symbolism. Maybe I'm off-base with this but there are a lot of men buying/financing rings they simply can't afford because they want their girl to have a ring she can be 'proud' of and her friends won't think he's some kind of slouch or pauper.
