Are Brad & Angelina firing off staffers because of money problems?

wenn3131660

The National Enquirer has one of the more interesting “Brangelina Fighting Constantly, Empress Zahara Calls Her Attorneys” stories that I’ve seen in a while. Instead of making it about other women or exes or costars or tell-all books or bejeweled cardboard swords for Shiloh, or even gerbils of doom, The Enquirer claims that Brad and Angelina are fighting about something incredibly relatable: money. Now, Brad and Angelina are two of the highest paid stars in Hollywood, and even if they each do only one film a year, that’s more than most of us will see in a lifetime, times 20. But, apparently their lifestyle choices (chateaus, endless renovations, nannies, security, gerbils, etc) are an enormous cash-suck. Which… I’ll believe. I’ll also buy that Brad and Angelina might have let some of their staff go. What I don’t buy is that Brad is the one who thinks they should pinching pennies – between the two of them, Brad seems like the one who blows his millions of dollars on art and toys and endless, multi-continent home renovations. Here’s the Enquirer’s take:

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are fighting over money – and it has led to their most vicious blowup ever! Pals say things got so heated between the battling couple that Brad walked out on Angie, screaming “I can’t take anymore! You’re breaking us up!” before flying to France in a rage.

“Right now Brad and Angie’s love affair is hanging by a thread,” says an insider.

With mounting debts and crushing overheads to fund their lavish lifestyle, Brad is “demanding that they reduce household staff, scale back on travel, artwork, expensive wine, buying up the most buzzed about scripts and books in Hollywood, and rein in their charitable donations,” said the insider.

While their combined net worth is around $250 million, another source maintains, “they’re spending more than they’re bringing in.”

“Brad recently fired one of his most trusted employees as well as the children’s French tutor, telling them, ‘I can’t afford you anymore.’ It’s hard to believe two fo the biggest movie stars in the world need to pinch pennies, but they are facing some harsh financial realities just like millions of other families all across America.”

They allegedly travel with six nannies, three security guards, a private chef, and a small army of doctors, nurses and up until recently, tutors. They also maintain houses in Malibu, New Orleans, Missouri, Cambodia and the $60 million French chateau. And they’re building a ranch in Namibia!

They were considering adding a $40 million Italian villa, but “Brad nixed that, and he’s overseeing renovations on the French property to possibly prepare it for sale.”

An insider says World War III erupted when Brad told Angelina they would have to cut costs: “When Brad warned Angie about money, she called him selfish and petty.” She threw in Brad’s face his plans to go on a lavish VIP trip to Dallas for the SuperBowl. “he was livid about that…[and it became] the fight to end all fights.”

After the fight, Brad stormed out and flew to France, to their Chateau Miraval, which he’s threatening to sell. “Brad thinks he could sell the chateau for a big profit, which would help their cash flow.”

[From The National Enquirer, print edition]

I should mention that in other tabloid coverage of Brad’s trip to Chateau Miraval, other sources described it as an act of love, that Brad is overseeing some renovations so that Angelina’s favorite home will be just perfect. Whatever – Brad’s a total property slut. He loves buying property and renovating it again and again through the years. It’s his hobby. And it’s an expensive and time-consuming hobby, but it makes him happy.

Anyway, I just thought the story was interesting because I often wonder how many people are full-time staffers of the Jolie-Pitt household, and how much all of it costs. Let’s just go with the basics: I think the J-Ps have a lot of security, and their bodyguard bills probably reach into the seven figures annually (IMO). They have… maybe four or five specialty tutors for the kids, but do they even work full-time? And then Angelina has one assistant that I know of, and Brad has… God knows. Plus, staff at every home, right? So, yeah, they’re employing a hell of a lot of people. Ridiculous.

One last thing – The Daily Beast sent us this explicit denial from Angelina’s representative in Washington (?). Apparently, the British papers were reporting that Angelina was trying to adopt a 4-year-old girl from Haiti. Angelina’s rep Adam Waldman tells The Daily Beast: “Earlier this week, the Daily Mirror U.K. and others reported that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are in the process of adopting a child from Haiti…There is no truth to these rumors. Rather, Ms. Jolie is focused on enhancing the welfare and legal protection of children within Haiti. As such, she has been meeting with government of Haiti officials, Haitian legal experts and non-governmental organizations regarding a new initiative of the Jolie-Pitt Foundation. The recently launched Jolie Legal Fellows Program will assist the justice system in Haiti to improve child protection.”

I agree that of the two Angie seems the more frugal. Brad is constantly buying art and doing renovations on his homes…and has for years before he even met Angie. BUT I’ll give them marks for creativity.

  2. olivia says:

Why wouldn’t they have money woes? Micheal Jackson and Nic Cage squandered their fortunes. And I’m sure their entourages aren’t as big as Brange’s. I can’t imagine how many thousand’s of dollar’s they spend a week. Nannies, tutors, bodyguards, chefs, cleaners, personal assistants, gardeners, secretaries and nurses. Not to mention mortgages, charitable donation’s and car repayments. Who wouldn’t want to simplify?

I thought Pitt wanted to live “more simple” life (his words) when he tried to explain why he got with Jolie.
And you’d think that a humanitarian who is sooo aware of poverty would want to downsize her lifestyle.

  3. Raven Sparrow says:

I thought Angie was a hands-on mom yet she has 6 nannies! One for each kid? Or one for each day and she’s a hands-on mom like one day/week?

  4. Gwenevere says:

This is so silly. If they wanted to solve their ‘money problems’ (which I don’t believe they have!) they would just sell ONE of their homes, or do ONE cruddy movie, and boom, problem solved. Imagine the kind of interest people this wealthy make on their savings every day. I don’t think these two will be declaring bankrupcy anytime soon.

  5. RHONYC says:

i read the whole thing out of boredom and fancy that…i’m still bored.

    zzz 🙁

  6. Rita says:

These two have more money than Brazil has rain. I don’t mind the interesting or hardly believable lies the tabs report but this is ridiculous. They might as well report Brand caught Angie in bed with Jen and several Gerbils.

  7. Riley says:

Their most vicious blowup ever! More vicious than when he calls Jennifer on Sunday nights to check in? More vicious than when Angie refused to speak to her father? More vicious than when Brad wanted to have sole custody of Shiloh? More vicious than when Angie did not want to spend Christmas in Minnesota? More vicious than when Brad drank 5 bottles of wine with Quentin Tarentino in one night? More vicious than when Angie was texting her exgirlfriend, Jenny? More vicious than when Brad wanted to live forever in New Orleans and send the children to public school? More vicious than when Angie refused to stop flying her plane, even when she was 8 months pregnant with twins? More vicious than– ugh, I give up now.

  8. Alex says:

Awwww let the bashing starts lol. I don’t believe this story and I doubt that they have six nannies

  9. renai(jrt) says:

we are all pinching pennies. no different with their larger pennies.

  10. renai(jrt) says:

the problem is that there are fewer and fewer people that can buy their homes that they would want to sell. and no one goes to the movies anymore. a waste of money to buy a movie ticket just to sit next to stinky strangers.

  11. the original bellaluna says:

Sorry, Enquirer, but any body who has 6 homes in as many countries; pilots their own private planes on most of their jaunts; and travels with a minimum of 10 non-security personnel and non-family members is NOT “facing the same harsh financial realities” like the rest of us.

Ever heard of accuracy in reporting? Or even a grain of truth in your pile of tabloid seed?

  12. Cary says:

Thats why the night before he flew to France were spotted bowling at one of The Spare Room in the Roosevelt Hotel. You know when you have money woes you go out and spend more money…lol

  13. renai(jrt) says:

Those satin pants on Angie look fabulous… Brad always looks like he is dressed to match Angie and really doenst boast well for him. Angie always looks like a million bucks…

  14. lilred says:

@ Rita he hasn’t caught them yet but the gerbils have been known to talk to sources.

  15. anti says:

“I can’t take anymore! You’re breaking us up!” is a weird quote. sort of clumsy and fictional sounding.

  16. photo jojo says:

This I believe. Every couple fights about money, in some way. We have friends who have no bills, no car pmt, no monthly obligations except a modest mortgage and they STILL argue over things like her getting a manicure once a month or how much he spends on his truck. No matter how much you have or don’t have, money is one of those universal things all couples struggle over.

  17. renai(jrt) says:

He is right to put a halt to lavish spending during such times of economic disaster… conservation is the best during this administration and maybe for the next run we can get out of this rut and back to some spending.

  18. Someone Else says:

    @Rita —

“These two have more money than Brazil has rain.”

You’ve become a great addition to my morning cappuccino.

I thank you for that. 🙂

  19. renai(jrt) says:

My husband and I never fight about money… I mean every now and then I scream about it a little… we both are very careful about our spending and we both know that about each other, so money we never fight over….. we save it for other things.

  20. Nanea says:

I don’t really believe this. As far as I remember, they leased parts of Miraval for a few years. The rumor that they bought originated with the Daily Fail, which also mentioned 35 bedrooms, half that would be a lot closer to the truth.

As it’s in the middle of nowhere, I highly doubt it’s worth $ 60 million, that would be € 45 million. Not even on the Cote d’Azur people would pay an amount like that for a comparable heap of stones. Chateau Miraval still operate the vineyards, and I somehow don’t see Brad traipsing through the scenery, harvesting grapes.

  21. ghostbuster says:

wow! i wish when i got into a fight about money i could slam the door and fly to france. it must be so hard on them financially being able to travel around the world on a whim. lol
if this story is true, then why is brad the one saying they need to stop spending, yet hes the one who jets off?

  22. renai(jrt) says:

maybe Brad is just jealous that jen cranks a movie out every other month and Angie wants to stay at home with the kids and only do one movie a year. He wants what he cant have….

  23. lucy2 says:

I too would guess she’s far more frugal than he is. He seems like a big spender, and I’d bet all the renovations and stuff he does, he puts more $ into them than he’ll ever get back out. Not to mention just the general cost of maintaining all those properties. Don’t they also have another big compound in LA somewhere? That’s 6 or 7 homes!
While I doubt they’re broke and fighting, I wouldn’t doubt for a second that they have a LOT of expenses. It is not a simple life by any means.

  24. janie says:

i totally believe they have a nanny for each kid. i have one kid with no help and getting out of the house to go to the park is quite an ordeal. who packs a suitcase for each trip, makes meals, changes diapers, stays up with them when they get sick, calls the dr, etc…
their idea of hands on parenting is a little rose colored when you have that much help.

  25. Julianne says:

Raven Sparrow@ Jennifer Garner is supposed to be the queen of hands-on mom and she has 2 nannies and 2 kids, that does not mean that they both work at the same time, you never see Gwen Stefani with the same nanny every time she goes out they probable work in shifts when one has the day off the other nanny takes over.

  26. Wow says:

Wow he’s so not good looking these days

  27. sharylmj says:

They may fight about money, but not the lack of it.. probably where to spend it.
They have enough money to do whatever they want for as long as they want. And I also agree that Angelina is probably more conservative when it comes to spending, although she did take the “Tourist” so her family could live with her in luxury for 6 months in Venice.. that place couldn’t have been cheap.

  28. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

I do believe that there are some rich celebs that are penny pinching, maybe they are or maybe they arent but in these times, they do have to watch what they spend.

I think this couple will not stand the test of times, I just know its not going to be a long term forever relationship but as long as they ARE together, lets leave em alone until they really do break up.

  29. Jane says:

Do they fly commercial? If not, then you can add in the private jet, pilot and staff that go with it.

There is also the people they hire to look after their money, accountants, lawyers.

  30. WhiteNoise says:

First Kmart, now this. Next, they’ll be out on the street with Angie carrying all her worldly goods in one of her sack dresses with a string of miserable barefoot children trailing behind her while an unkempt Brad brings up the rear pulling the disgruntled Empress on a silver and pink throne-cart. 😥

  31. Solveig says:

I’m not informed on their properties, and except for the chateau in France I’ve never seen one of their mansions.
Anyway, it seems impossible that such rich people could have problems like that, considering the enourmous amount of dollars they earn, but who knows? Loads of celebrities got money problems, but I call BS on this one.

  32. Barbie says:

Yeah ryt.N d moon is made of cheese.

  33. Heather says:

I can just imagine Brad throwing a hissy girly fit saying “f-ck you” and storming off to France. “I’ll be im my Castle if you need me”

  34. Runs with Scissors says:

the writing in this is hilarious.

If any of this is true then it sounds like they’re supporting several families in addition to their own and not just in the film industry.

AJ is looking so round and ‘womanly’ in these photos, are they old or new?

  35. Raven Sparrow says:

    @Janie – I agree!

@Julianne – I’m not singling out Angie, it’s also Jennifer G. and the rest of them who claim they are hands-on.

I find it extremely insulting because I have three kids under the age 4 and there are times when I think I’ll go crazy! I have no time for me or for anything other than the kids. I come on here when (thank God, finally! )they are napping. I do everything: cook, clean and take care of my kids. I don’t have a nanny to give them a bath, feed them, wake up in the middle of the night when they cry or play with them when I’m tired.

So I feel like kicking these ladies in the shins when they say they are “hands-on” and we’re supposed to go “aaaaawww what an amazing mom she is”.

  36. Cheyenne says:

    Slow news day?

  37. Cherry Rose says:

I remember in the beginning of Angelina and Brad’s relationship, there was an article of them clashing on how they spent money on the kids.

Angelina wanted the kids to be aware that there are tons of kids who don’t get any toys, and she wanted them to not be spoiled and take things for granted, and Brad would just buy the kids whatever they wanted.

But that was a long time ago, and I don’t know if the article was true or not.

But money is what every couple clashes over. Dosen’t matter if you’re rich or poor.

  38. the original bellaluna says:

If I’m not mistaken (and I may very well be), they both have pilots licenses. Makes “storming off” quite that much easier then, doesn’t it?

  39. carrie says:

they only rent Miraval’s house to Paul Allen & Bono; i have the family who lives next to the town

  40. janie says:

    raven sparrow-
i agree, but it is not only “what an amazing mom” it is that it is a lie. it would take a huge amount of staff to tend to that many kids, or even a couple of them (paltrow) when you lead a jet set lifestyle, or even a halfway normal one.
deal with a jet lagged kid and see how often you change timezones.
now, if i can pawn them off while i sleep, bring it.

  41. mymy says:

I so believe they are having cash flow problems.I am not sure they fought about it. But it is a very lavish lifestyle they lead. I have always wondered why? I would never want those kinds of expenses no matter how much money I made.
I mean just the upkeep on the grounds of each property alone is a fortune. Forget everything else.

  42. flourpot says:

IF they’re firing people I’m guessing it’s not over money issues but loyalty issues.

  43. Kaye1 says:

I would love to know what their lavish lifestyle actually costs. I’m sure it’s astronomical.

I totally agree with Raven Sparrow that these women have no idea what it means to actually be a hands-on mom. It’s a ton of work and when they are little, it’s almost impossible to get time for yourself.

  44. leuce7 says:

I’m sure hands-on mom means a completely different thing in Hollywood than it does to the rest of the world. I had a relative that worked as a live-in nanny for for a studio exec and she pretty much single handedly raised those kids–she had Sundays off, would go home Saturday night and be back Monday morning, and it was the only time she didn’t spend at the house. So if you compare it to that, yeah, I guess interacting with your kids daily is “hands-on,” lol.

Though, if I had that much money, I’d hire a nanny (or a housekeeper or assistant or whatever I could afford, too). What a luxury (and I don’t even have kids yet)!

  45. shazzzz says:

This is crap…they rent the Chateau in France…but I’m sure they spend more than I can even imagine….
I’ve also read that Angie thinks Brad is careless with money…and thats as far as I can go…

  46. cara says:

Even Ted Turner’s down to his last couple million.

  47. Angel says:

So stupid 🙂 But this make me laugh… They are world famous and every step they make is followed but they still argue in front of someone else, knowing that ‘someone’ will tell all that to media.

    YES right 😉

  48. nag says:

Wish I could fly off to France when I have a rage…

  49. Kim says:

Well several tabloids claim they are spending $12M to renovate Miravel they have pics of the building permits in OK and US Weekly. Apparently you have to lease for 3 years before buying . They started leasing in 2008 before the twins birth. The tabloids listed the renovations but since I was reading it in the checkout line I don’t have all the details. .Oh yeah according to Angie they have 4 nannies and three multilingual teachers that travel with them. Also I think NE fictional writer got the characters wrong, Brad is the one who is into art he spent almost million at a art show in Switzerland. Also he buys houses like some people buy cars.

  50. Zzzzzzzzzz says:

What about the millions they give to charity? We’re all so eager to discuss the planes, houses, nannies and art and how they’re ‘blowing’ their money, but what about the millions they give to different charities/foundations every year? Would that count as a factor in their impending bankruptcy?

    Honestly, people will believe anything.

  51. renai(jrt) says:

the millions they give to charity is a tax write off so that they dont have to pay higher taxes

  52. Cheyenne says:

Nobody knows how much they spend except their accountants, and I doubt their accountants are talking to the tabloids.

I agree with flourpot: if they fire anyone, it will be because of a violation of a confidentiality agreement, which they make all their employees sign before they are hired.

Anyway, people with that much money usually don’t fight over money. Especially when she has another $20 million plus backend coming in when Kung Fu Panda 2 comes out this summer, and he has another $20 mil plus backend coming in September when they release Moneyball.

  53. Hautie says:

There has been so many stories in the last year about the so-call insanely wealthy, being broke.

Houses being foreclosed on broke. Getting the Mercedes repo’d broke.

It happens. Alot easier than you realize.

And to support a staff of 10. (Nannies, chefs, house hold help, personal assistants) Plus having to pay all the overhead on multiple homes. It is running them into the millions.

Though I tend to think that Angie Jo is hands on with her income. She does not strike me as a girl who does not keep up with the cash.

It may explain why she has not legally married him. Their finances are not co-mingled. She is not responsible for his debts.

  54. e.non says:

i don’t buy it for a second. i’d bet pitt’s got a very protective accountant and financial set-up — and in missouri. he’s got too many philanthropic commitments in addition to the humanitarian/new orleans stuff to not have taken care of them.

  55. Reality says:

“Especially when she has another $20 million plus backend coming in when Kung Fu Panda 2 comes out this summer, and he has another $20 mil plus backend coming in September when they release Moneyball.”

Where are you getting these ridiculous numbers from? Seriously, if you think Jolie is making 20mil + backend for saying a few lines in an animated movie, you must be insane. And Brad’s salary for Moneyball is reported to be a pretty modest 15mil.

Sounds to me like you just made these figures up, but please provide a link that proves me wrong.

  56. louise says:

It’s amusing how the haters believe every bad thing about Brad and Angelina. A lot in this story is false and doesn’t make sense. I also don’t get why people claim they live an extra luxurious life compared to other celebrities. It doesn’t seem like they live any differently than other celebrities.

Angelina has talked about her nannies a lot. I think she said she has 3 nannies and 3 tutors. I don’t know if the have traveling chef considering they could just hire locally. Besides even Jennifer Anniston says she has 2 chefs. They rent the chateau. Brad had the LA house before even meeting Angelina. It’s just 5000-6000sqft. He did buy a few smaller homes (about $1 million each) for privacy over the years. The house in Cambodia is pretty much a shack. The New Orleans home cost $3-5 million so not a huge money pit. I don’t even know if they have a home MO but it’s probably very inexpensive considering the region. Whenever they go out I only see 1 or 2 bodyguards. There may be 1 or 2 who are invisible but not the small army people claim they surround themselves with. Most of their travels is movie related. So the studio picks up most if not all of the bills. I just don’t see the extremely expensive lifestyle people claim they live. I see other celebrities who spend a lot more than they.

  57. someone says:

I don’t even like these two, and i don’t believe this story..they may fight, but I don’t think its because they are running out of money…I thought they rented the chateau in France???

  58. Stella says:

I have a hard time believing this story.

I think all couples have disagreements. I think the Brange are just tabloid fodder with the press hungrily waiting for anything-good or bad to happen.

They seem to protect their privacy. I would have multiple bodyguards if I was in their position, especially with the children. If they are firing people, it’s due to lack of trust, not money. I’m not a fan or non fan. If they are pinching pennies, so to speak, good for them. Regardless of how spectacularly weathly you are, you need to keep a lid on your money.

Also, I’m sure that both have trusted financial advisor’s and accountant’s so they would weigh things carefully.

I know Pitt is very invested in buying homes/renovation/art.
If I had the kind of money that the two of them possess, you could be sure that I would put children’s education at number one.

  59. Cheyenne says:

$20 mil + backend was the salary she is reported to be making per movie now. I don’t have a link to that, but the link below definitely says she was paid $15 mil plus backend for Salt and and the same for Wanted. Since Salt and Wanted made a combined total of $600 million, her backend may have added up to a hefty chunk of change. And I doubt she had to take a pay cut for KFP 2. Do you have a link for Brad Pitt’s salary for Moneyball?

Anyway, $30 mil plus backend (for KFP 2 and Moneyball, if that is what they are getting paid), isn’t exactly peanuts. And oh yeah, I almost forgot — he also has The Tree of Life coming out sometime this year. Chalk up another $15 or $20 mil.

They’re not headed for the poorhouse yet.

    http://www.the-numbers.com/people/AJOLI.php

  60. JazzJazz says:

I think Angie should start saving her money. She is not that great of an actress and her last few films bombed. In fact, the only reason she is a celebrity is because she broke up the Pitt/Aniston marriage. You would think that Brad was smarter than he appears to be. He was truly sucked in.

  61. Lauren says:

Angie has never seemed extravagent or flashy. Brad seems to be the one whom is into architecture, castles, & doobies. Angie is so gorgeous & intelligent, I doubt he will ever leave her..Brad will never find anyone better than AJ.

  62. Isa says:

I think it is possible for them to have financial woes, but I don’t think this story is true. If it is true I imagine they’d jump into a few more projects in order to get some cash flowing.

Not every couple fights about money. I know that my husband and I don’t. We both stress over it but we don’t fight with each other.

  63. latam says:

why do people go on about cash donations as tax writeoffs?

while the cash left behind might possibly be taxed at a lower rate it doesnt negate the fact that the money has been donated. You might pay less to the tax man but there is no way you can actually save money by making a cash donation

  64. TeeTee says:

uh no, they are firing them because someone very close to them is giving up all the info–its obvious its from the inside..

  65. Cheyenne says:

JazzJazz says: “Her last few films bombed”.
    =========================================

Bombed? Want to talk about her last five?

    “Kung Fu Panda” $632 million
    “Wanted” $341 million
    “Changeling” $114 million
    “Salt” $294 million
    “Tourist” $225 million and counting

Most studios execs would sell their souls to have “bombs” like that.

  66. MrsOdie2 says:

Usually these stories have some thread of truth in them somewhere. Not always, of course. If these two are a real couple, then they have fights. Every couple has fights. Often they are about money. When you have kids, you are going to have disagreements about how to raise the kids. Not necessarily huge, “I’m storming off to my castle in France!” fights, but disagreements. If Brangelina are anything like most couples who have been together six plus years and have a bunch of children and several mortgages and both have to work to support their lifestyle, then their life is probably similar to other couples: fights about money, petty resentments, sex about once every two weeks (more often on vacation), stress about the children (illness, homework, behavioral milestones) and so on. But since they’re still together, they probably work it all out at the end of the day, like the rest of us.

*And if I could caption the picture at the Golden Globes where he has his sunglasses on and he’s baring her teeth at her, I would write, “Lady, if you can’t put a smile on your ****ing face and act like you are having a good time, I am going to leave you on this carpet and go smoke a joint with Kevin Smith. Got that?”

  67. _Salem_ says:

Latam, I agree. Anyone who says they do it for a tax write-off, is quite frankly, an imbecile. It does NOT work that way, at all. These people lack any idea of how taxes are done.

  68. lisa says:

Why are the same people over and over spouting off that silly rumor that they have 6 nannies.. Neither Angie or Brad have denied they have help. They each have said they have 3 nannies. Why does that bother people so much. I have friends that have a nannie. We have seen pics of the nannies and since I am a fan I have NEVER seen 6 of them’

Regarding the money rumor. The Los Feliz resident.. Brad bought that property YEARS ago. I think many of the rumors that are attributed to Brad/Angie usually turn out to be some other celebrity. They travel for movies and some of that expense is paid by the production company.

but people need to believe the worst. Thing is Brad/Angie just keep on doing what they want and people still talk about them. Even when they are out of out of the spot light. I guess even with all the other celebrity drama a story about is more fascinating.

  69. rosalee says:

everyone forgets, the lavish salaries they are paid for each movie, the taxman takes his share off the top approximately 26 percent or more, managers traditionally take 8 percent, lawyers, agents..twenty million paycheque..5 million take home pay so for both approximately 10 million dollars year – they also have to pay land and house taxes in France, and their other properties…salaries, lavish habits etc.

I find it amusing when people talk about how Angelina’s movies have “bombed” of late. The Tourist (which everyone seems to think is just HER movie, forgetting Johnny Depp is right alongside her or are people suggesting she’s a bigger star than Depp now?) underperformed in the U.S but in international markets did pretty good business. Salt was on her name and her name alone and made a killing domestically and internationally. Those were her last two. If people are counting Changeling and A Mighty Heart, then more fool then because dramas like those rarely make much money at the box office, they’re all about critical acclaim. Which she got.

So what “bombs”? Wishful thinking from a fair few methinks.

Much of the travel they did was likely at least partially reimbursed by the studio. For instance any promotional tours or travel while shooting. Also hotels or rented homes in Venice and even possibly Hungary.
The examples of Michael Jackson and Nic Cage were two people who had a sickness and were spending incredible amount of money.
Didn’t anyone see the Martin Bashir interview where he went in to a store and bought a mill worth of crap?Nic Cage didn’t just by properties he bought his own island and is also probably a hoarder.
I just don’t think this story is true.
BUT I find it sexist that it all comes down to how many nannies Angie has.

  72. Katie says:

Ok, you don’t get paid the same salary for voiceover work in an animated picture as you do for acting in a movie. Not even close. There’s no stunts, no training, no wardrobe, no expenses. It’s just speaking into a microphone.

Maybe she got a couple mil, but it’s easy work which takes no time. I don’t doubt that AJ and BP are making bank, but nowhere near what Cheyenne suggests. And Rosalee is right, the taxes and expenses they have to pay are massive. Still doubt they’re going broke just yet though.

  73. Zvonk says:

I read an interview where Angelina Jolie was asked about money. She said that she donates a third of her salary to charity, a third is invested, and a third is for living expenses. I don’t think there’s any truth to the rumours. She likely has a tidy sum coming in just from her investments.

  74. SassyOne says:

Or perhaps because of breech of non-disclosure?

  75. Newbie says:

What I don’t understand is why they have a personal chef. I do suppose it would be hard to create homemade cheesepuffs, spaghetti and McDonalds fare on your own, though.
    JK. Please don’t hurt me!

  76. Kim says:

I can understand why a family of 8 needs a personal chef more than I can understand why a woman living alone needs 2 chefs. This story is BS because it mentions they need to cut back on traveling, artwork, buying scripts are Brad’s things. Not spending a million on art makes more sense than firing a French tutor.According to THR AJ made $20M+backend for SALT and The Tourist, she will make $25M + upfront for Cleopatra and she doesn’t have an agent so no 10% agent fee.She probably got about 3M for KFP she got $1M for Beowulf and worked about 10 days.

  77. JenJen says:

This is why I don’t like them, if you are really down to earth you don’t need to rent a mansion for show.

  78. lisa says:

    @jenjen

they leased the property FIRST because that was the requirement for purchase in France. They are or have purchased it now.

Do a bit of research outside tabloids.

  79. Cheyenne says:

@Kim: What is THR? Do you have a link for that?

Angie’s estimated salary is all over the map, depending on which link you click on, but I totally don’t believe she’s getting $25 mil plus backend for “Cleopatra” — especially when there is no proof that she’s going to star in the movie, or even if the movie is being made.

  80. celeducat'em says:

if they are not going broke, it’s going to happen eventually at their speed. yes, they have more than 3 nannies as a french friend whose decorator aunt confirmed on site. they told the decorator to spend “whatever”. and have not kept control on it. if that is how they handle the one expenditure i am sure it speaks plenty about the rest of their spending discipline. her career is winding down as she is aging considerably fast. rather, their film production projects will need to ramp up to compensate if they want to keep the lifestyle.
also, i agree that 25 mil a film gets greatly reduced with taxes, lawyers, agents, etc. and with cd interest rates today at 2% if lucky… will need to adopt another “employable” orphan for people mag cover profits!

  81. mimi says:

brad has a bunch of planets in capricorn – a notoriously frugal sign. So yeah, I believe that he is worried about all the spending. Caps are also incredible business people. He’s got that lucrative production company that he managed to keep after the divorce with j.a. He’s savvy when it comes to money. I don’t konw about Angelina…just more luck I would say than any real business acumen.

  82. Camille says:

    🙄

    @Zzzzzzzzzz: Great comment, ITA. 😀

  83. rubber chicken says:

    they are both extraordinarily Vain.

  84. nnn says:

    @ 61. ….uum no, pure wishful thinking but numbers don’t lie !

For the record, Jolie is the only actress who has now four movies in a row where she hit 150 millions abroad only in whatever genre she is in, in non sequel or non anime or non 3D.

And since in the foreign market, TT will surpass the 175 millions of Salt very, very soon, it will be 4 times in a row that she hits that number abroad ONLY when other actors and actresses only dream of hitting that number WORLDWIDE….ask Denzel and his usual 150 millions (if he is lucky) worldwide reached for his usual 100 millions production project !

Apart from ‘American Gangster’ where he hit 200 millions, there is not a single 100 millions production action movie he made (and he makes them a lot now) where he reaches 200 millions WORLDWIDE, hence breakeven. I bet he would love to trade his ROI of his latest action flick with Jolie’s TT.

The Tourist is en route to surpass the 175 millions of SALT abroad very soon and will probably hit approach the 200 millions bar in the foreign market after its last run in Japan.

As for the critcally acclaimed and oscarized Changeling, that movie did 112 millions, hence broke even before videos sales and did at least twice as much as other oscar contenders dramas the same years.

So if she bombs, every other actors/actresses bomb too cause there is no one bar Will Smith, Depp and Pitt who are able to hit those numbers on various genre of movies.

To make it even more clearer, for the movies that are still out, the domestically reviled TOURIST in the is the movie that has of today generated the most revenues in the foreign market, outside sequel, anime. No other action, romantic, drama, comedy has done as much abroad. Not even popular Little Folkers has done better abroad than the Tourist did. That’s why that ‘bomb’ will reach 250 millions+ worldwide while those dubbed successes like Denzel’s Unstoppable has yet to reach 170 millions while finishing its run with the same 100 millions production cost.

    NUMBERS DON’T LIE !

It’s ridiculous to me that people who play “dress up” for a living make this kind of money. So overrated! Both of them!

  86. Crash2GO2 says:

“It’s ridiculous to me that people who play “dress up” for a living make this kind of money. So overrated! Both of them”

Eh. Acting *is* work. If you are lucky it pays very very well.

I find it to be sort of like sports – it’s entertainment, and certainly nowhere near an ‘important’ job, but the public is willing to back it, so the players make millions.

If only we could get the public to support education with a similar enthusiasm…

  87. Bohemia says:

“i read the whole thing out of boredom and fancy that…i’m still bored.

    zzz ”

    Hilarious!

  88. Bohemia says:

i’ll bet the production company for Tourist paid the bills for wherever they were living in Venice. that’s couldn’t have been Angie’s personal moolah. i agree with the general consensus that Brad has always been the extravagant spender. however, i still call BS on this story.

  89. Bohemia says:

crash2GO2; i blame it all on man’s cravings for escapism. and i hardly ever hold a grudge.

  90. Crash2GO2 says:

@Bohemia: “i blame it all on man’s cravings for escapism.”

So true! That also must explain the fanbase for 2.5 men and those rich wives of such and such reality shows.

“and i hardly ever hold a grudge.”

Neither do I. It would be pretty silly, seeing as how I hang out here for the very same purpose.

  91. Bohemia says:

@Crash. Lol. Exactly. We give the money to them ourselves. on certain days, i want, need, require… escapism to survive!

  92. Anne says:

Why are you even posting National Enquirer stories? That is the TRUE question.

  93. _Salem_ says:

JenJen, be reasonable and THINK before posting. They are a family of EIGHT. They have 6 kids, and probably at least 1/2 nannies. A bodyguard etc. You think an ordinary house is going to house that? They NEED a mansion because they are such a large family. What you want them to rent a 3 bedroom place? Or BUY a place EVERY…SINGLE….TIME they go somewhere to film? Your logic is seriously effed up and driven by irrational hatred.

  94. _Salem_ says:

celeducat’em: “yes, they have more than 3 nannies as a french friend whose decorator aunt confirmed on site.”

If you TRULY buy that then can I tell you that my Uncle’s best pal’s sister’s bosses son’s daughter’s dog-walker’s hairdresser says that Tom Cruise walks around with a pot-plant on his head. Seriously, you are obviously very gullible and believe anything if it suits your negative agenda.

“her career is winding down as she is aging considerably fast.”

Bhahaha, you wish! She has never looked better and her career is still going strong, as is her good reputation amongst their peers and the public. Keep dreaming.

“will need to adopt another “employable” orphan for people mag cover profits!”

Charming. I hope you never become a parent if thats your attitude on adoption. You are so filled with irrational hate and no doubt jealousy that its sad.

  95. Liana says:

    oh yay. Look who’s back.

And whoever said that Angelina was getting 20 mil + backend for KFP2 – ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?????? She’s getting maybe a million or two for the voiceover work.

  96. _Salem_ says:

Oh yay, look who’s still here. (rolls eyes) Got anything to say on the topic of the thread? No, of course you don’t. Btw, I never left.

  97. Sakyiwaa says:

@salem; well, Liana didn’t mention names.

  98. Sakyiwaa says:

as a loon though, i’m glad the Brange have an attack dog.

  99. Sakyiwaa says:

ok. that comment i just made was inappropriate and unnecessary. My bad. i apologise. you’re not an attack dog, Salem.
    @Liana: Well…, you usually don’t pick on people…
