Marion Cotillard officially cast in Batman 3, who will she play?

Marion Cotillard just signed on to join The Dark Knight Rises as an as-of-yet unknown character. Cotillard is currently pregnant with her first baby, due this April. The film is going to start shooting in June so she’s not going to have much time before she has to get right back to work. Cotillard last worked with director Chris Nolan on Inception.

Gotham City is about to get a French accent. Already set to star Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and Christian Bale returning as the Caped Crusader, the latest Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises, is also welcoming a formidable femme fatale: 2008 Oscar winner Marion Cotillard.

While it still remains to be seen whether the French star, 35, will play a romantic interest or a rival superhero to Hathaway’s character of Selina Kyle – also known as Catwoman – the addition of Cotillard comes as a surprise, reports Monday’s Le Parisien newspaper.

Sources also tell PEOPLE that the La Vie en Rose Oscar winner, who is expecting a baby in April with her French actor-director beau Guillaume Canet, signed onto the Batman project Saturday in Paris.

The Batman movie will also reunite Cotillard with her Inception director Christopher Nolan and costars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hardy. Others in the cast include Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Gary Oldman.

According to sources, Cotillard will start shooting at London’s Elstree Studios in mid-June, then move on to locations in Pittsburgh and Los Angeles this summer. Filming is expected to wrap in New York in November, with the picture’s release set for July 2012.

Cotillard’s next picture is Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, which opens this year’s Cannes Film Festival May 11 – with Cotillard expected on the red carpet.

[From People]

Anne Hathaway has already been cast as catwoman so leaves the question as to who Cotillard will play. Kaiser thinks she’ll be playing Talia Ducard, the daughter of Liam Neeson’s character. Quite a few actresses have been attached to that role, including Keira Knightley and Rachel Weisz. It’s a plum role and one that Cotillard should fill nicely. She’ll have the mom boobs for it.

I love all three of the Inception stars (JGL, call me!) but I hope Nolan isn’t going to do a Tim Burton and start only casting the same few actors in every movie.

Burton’s films, lovely though they are, have really broken the fourth wall for me because Depp and the missus are in EVERYTHING.

Speaking of, did you hear HBC’s speech last night? SUPERB.

  2. Jane says:

Ugh really? That’s annoying. I thought she was the worst part of Inception. Every time they went to her screeching “STAY WITH ME!!!!!!11!!1!!!!!!!” I groaned.

  3. carrie says:

it’s not THE DARK KNIGHT RISES but INCEPTION 2 (Dicaprio is too expensive now)

  4. Solveig says:

@embertine, Nolan always casts the same actors, with the exception of his first 3 movies…

  5. Aria says:

Wow, I’m impressed at her boobs on the 2nd pic. HUGE!!!!

  6. normades says:

I think Marion has the same problem as Penelope Cruz. Both are great actresses in their native languages but just meh in English speaking roles.

I thought she was really awful in Pubic Enemies

  7. anti says:

i like directors that use some of the same actors in most of their films, especially when their acting chemistry is so nice!

  8. Gwenevere says:

Not looking forward to Anne H as Catwoman… I think that was a bad casting choice.

  9. Oi says:

lets hope she gets more screen time than Hathaway. This has great potential.

  10. danielle says:

I’m concerned with how many big names are being cast – I hope Nolan’s not so concerned with getting everyone screentime that he loses the plot – that’s what will always make a movie in the end, imo.

  11. jinni says:

She’s probably going to play the interchangeable female lead that ends up getting killed so Bruce can remain in a state of perpetual brooding.

With all of these big name people being in this movie I’m getting the feeling that this is going to end up like the third “Pirates” and “Spiderman” movies. Where the focus of the movie and plot suffer for the sake of giving all the actors screen time.

  12. Katie says:

I could totally see her as Talia. I’m still bitter about Hathaway as Catwoman though. This eases that pain somewhat.

  13. lucy2 says:

I’m excited to see this, I like her as an actress. Nolan often reuses actors, so I’m not surprised. What role is JGL playing? I didn’t know he was in this one too. Michael Caine was also in Inception too, played Marion’s father actually.
Anne Hathaway still seems like a surprising choice, but at least she can act and they didn’t go with a Megan Fox type.

  14. Arianna says:

    @ Jinni
She’s probably going to play the interchangeable female lead that ends up getting killed so Bruce can remain in a state of perpetual brooding.

    HAHAAHHAAHAHAHHA.
    exactly

  15. KateNonymous says:

@normades (#6) I thought she was fine in Public Enemies–not great, but she did what she could with that role. Bale, on the other hand, was so forgettable that I actually forgot he was in the movie (which was disappointing in general, with the exception of Stephen Lang).

But, hey, at least we know she’s not playing Rachel Dawes.

  16. Kim says:

WHY R THEY CASTING ALL THESE FOREIGN ACTORS FOR A VERY AMERICAN MOVIE???? Annoying!!!!! At least they cast Anne Hathaway.

Normally i couldnt care less what nationality actors are from BUT Superman is such a quinessential American comic book hero i think the actors playing these roles should be American.

Like I wouldnt want to see the Kings Speech with American actors. Some movies need to be acted by the nationality portrayed.

  17. Patrice says:

Now THIS is who should have been cast as “Catwoman”!! Can’t you just see it what with all of that French allure and sex appeal?! Don’t get me wrong: I love Anne Hathaway (and think that she is an incredible actress), but I’m sorry, the whole “I’m super duper wholesome” image just doesn’t compliment the role. I mean, the original Cat was Eartha “growwwwwllll” Kitt for Heaven’s sakes!!

I just hope whatever they do they don’t waste Marion’s unbelievable talent by turning her into Bruce Wayne arm candy…not having “Harvey Dent” in the new installemnt is bad enough; doing that might actually kill me! : )

  18. Kristin says:

    @ Kim-

uh…wrong movie! This is Batman, and seeing as Christian Bale is English and is one of the best Batmans ever portrayed, I think it’s based more on acting chops than nationality.

  19. Brittany says:

AHHHHHHH MAYBE THEY ARE DOING TALIA AL-GHUL!!!!

whew. You guys know I’m excited about this!

Still pissed they’re doing Catwoman, but this makes it a little less annoying.

    🙂

  20. CB Rawks says:

That’s great news! Love her. Maybe they want me to actually go see it. 🙂
I loved Aaron Eckhart in the last one, and it was blissfully devoid of Katie Holmes, so things just keep improving.

  21. LBeees says:

@ Kim… this is BATMAN, not Superman. And who gives a crap if they’re French or “American”. She is a fabulous, emotive actress. I’d take her over most of the born-in-the-USA actresses around here. Most of my favorite actresses are not American.

Aside from that… Yess!!! I LOVE Marion. I admire her adorable beauty, her accent, everything. SHe’s gorgeous and she’ll bring Batman to a new level.

  22. Trashaddict says:

Love her but she should lose the bangs. I think the dress must have been bought before the pregnancy, it does not fit the boobs, and she should take better advantage of those pregnancy boobs! Sigh, you really miss them after they’re gone….

  23. Newbie says:

I think she’s one of the most gorgeous and talented women working in hollywood, but dayum, those boobs are a little much in that dress.
