Christina Applegate debuts baby Sadie on an awkward People Mag cover

christinapeople

Just a few weeks ago, Christina Applegate gave birth to a Sadie, Sadie, Married Lady. No, she named her baby girl Sadie Grace, and now Christina is debuting her little girl in the pages of People Magazine. I have to say – while I’m happy for Christina, and I like her a great deal, this is an absolutely terrible cover shot. The baby looks fine – it’s Christina that looks weird. Why in the world is the shot so tight? Anyway, here are some excerpts from People’s cover story:

Holding newborn daughter Sadie Grace in the hospital on Jan. 27, Christina Applegate was overwhelmed by her feelings of acceptance and love.

“I felt my heart literally open up for the first time and like wrap itself around her. It was profound,” Applegate, 39, tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover story. “And I’m more in love with her every minute of the day.”

Back home in the L.A. house she shares with musician fiancé Martyn LeNoble, 41, Applegate has been relishing motherhood. “I want to be the ultimate burper and diaper-changer, I want to be the ultimate at all of it,” she says.

“Sometimes I stand there going, ‘I’m not doing any of this right!’ And then I get this big man belch out of her and I go, ‘Ah, we accomplished this together.’ ”

It’s those little moments that now mean the most to Applegate, who opted for a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008.

“I’ve had to talk about that word [cancer] more than I’ve ever had to talk about a word in my life,” she says. “After a while you’re like, ‘There’s got to be something else to me.’ ”

Daughter Sadie has now given Applegate a new word to focus on: Mom.

“Yeah, now I’m Mom. She’s healed me in so many ways,” says the actress. “She’s just made my life so much better. She’s opened my whole soul.”

For more of Applegate’s exclusive interview, including photos of the family, pick up this week’s PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday.

She sounds really happy, and God bless. I’m happy for her too. And now, since I don’t really have anything to add on the subject of babies and moms, I have a media/celebrity-related digression. How does Christina warrant a People cover? Is it just because of the baby? Because although I like her, Christina isn’t even on a television show anymore. She’s just not that big of a celebrity, in general. Maybe she got the cover for a combination of reasons: public goodwill and everybody loves baby pics. Still no People cover for Eva Longoria, which makes me so, so happy.

  1. DGO says:

I think the cover was because of the breast cancer angle to the story. She’s going to need a hysterectomy eventually, too. The type of breast cancer she had is linked to genetic cervical cancer, so she’s said she was going to have surgery after having a baby or two.

  2. Mettel says:

I think she got the cover because she’s so likable. She has been through a lot and now she has had her miracle.. plus.. there hasn’t been any other brake-ups or Brangelina drama this week.
God, I even miss the “Angelina is making her daughter into a boy” drama that was going on for like.. forever! Hah.. just kidding, I don’t miss it AT ALL!

  3. Bite me says:

Oh noes she’s pimping her baby , rolls eyes. I love Kelly Bundy

  4. lrm says:

    Why a People cover?
    b/c of the breast cancer-
that topic sells magazine! seriously…ppl are like ‘aw, she conquered and now she has a baby’….
    tragedy sells.
and tragedy followed by victory sells even more.
especially wit the ‘mini van majority’ [although i hate that term personally]

  5. lucy2 says:

I’m really happy for her and their family. I don’t care for the idea of doing the magazine covers though.

  6. Sarah says:

    I think it’s a lovely cover.

  7. mln76 says:

I’m really happy for her and I wish her the best health. But yeah the cover photo is kind of awkward.

  8. Dani says:

I guess I don’t see what is so wrong with the cover pic. She isn’t a teen anymore. Surely you aren’t saying she looks her age which we all know is a death kiss in Hollywood. Wow, the expectations placed on women in this day and age are insane.

  9. S says:

she’s in that movie Hall Pass that is coming out, so the timing with that probably has something to do with it.

  10. original kate says:

okay, i’m glad christina is healthy now, but i am going to snark: why in god’s name would someone not blend in the concealer under her eyes? that is just so distracting i can’t look at anything else.

  11. jdao says:

    I like the cover.

  12. Delta Juliet says:

    Awww…….that baby is just beautiful…..

  13. Liana says:

    I love the cover.

  14. Schnauzers!!!! says:

I think it’s a beautiful cover shot. And I think she IS worthy of a People cover. 🙂

  15. dit says:

Hmm, I don’t see what’s weird about her in the cover. She looks great there.

  16. HRH says:

I think she looks gorgeous, and so does baby Sadie. I’m really happy for her.

  17. Lynda says:

She’s just fine. Now tell her to stay home and take care of herself and the baby.

  18. Debra says:

I also liked the cover..very sweet.

  19. Embee says:

The cover’s pretty. I was all up in my baby’s business like that, too, until she was big enough to squirm away.

She’s got Mom eyes now, too. You can’t tell from the cover but look at the pic of her and the daddy and you’ll see it.

Edit: Mom-eyes is a compliment. There’s a wisdom and grace (born of exhaustion and worry, most likely) that I can see in the eyes of moms.

  20. dorothy says:

Is that her fiance? OMG, he’s frightening.

  21. missa says:

Okay, come ON, you have material like serial killer eyes and moobs on her husband, and you go for the attack on her BEAUTIFUL picture of her and her precious baby?
    ugh.

  22. Jackson says:

I really like the cover pic. She looks beautiful and the baby actually looks cute….yeah, that’s right, not all babies are cute!

  23. Marjalane says:

Now that’s a pretty baby! It is kind of a big giant shot of Christina’s face though-

  24. Brittany says:

    @DGO

She has a mutation of a BRCA gene, which means she has a higher predisposition to breast and ovarian cancer.

Cervical cancer is almost exclusively caused by HPV, meaning that in a round about way, it’s basically an STD.

I knew medical school would pay off! 🙂

  25. Jezi says:

She looks beautiful and I’m very happy for her.

  26. janica says:

    What a beautiful baby!

  27. BettyBoop says:

i have to say that by picking on a breast cancer survivor & her beautiful baby you have truly & officially earned your cele|bitchy moniker. i read you daily so i get what you do but this one was uncalled for and unnecessary.

  28. Mrs.Rut says:

I usually agree with this website, but I think she looks gorgeous! WTH are you talking about?!

  29. Jennay says:

@BettyBoop I agree! Mother & baby are beautiful. Kaiser is tacky.

  30. DGO says:

@ Brittany – While most cases of cervical cancers are caused by HPV, there is a small percentage caused by a genetic link which is also linked to the type of breast cancer gene she and her mother have. The same problem runs in my family, and I heard Christina talking about it after her breast cancer surgery. She said she opted to have a baby or two before her hysterectomy. In my family, the women affected by the gene opt to have the hysterectomy along with breast surgery and forego having children. It’s a personal thing.

  31. Alexa says:

SO BEAUTIFUL! The baby, Christina, her story . . . What an uplifting story!

  32. dj says:

I like a good positive story (moving away from the negative drama example: Halle Berry hating on G.A.). Let’s see Christina Applegate survived breast cancer, had a double mascetomy, got engaged and had a successful pregnancy and a beautiful baby. I also, think she was up for Emmys or Golden Globes a few years ago. Yeah, who would what to hear about that?

  33. B says:

Umm, the picture looks fine (maybe a little large, but she still looks good). They probably just photoshopped under her eyes. Oh whatever.

  34. Angel says:

    SOO SWEET COVER 🙂 🙂

  35. Isa says:

I think the cover looks fine. Does she remind anyone of a prettier Jennifer Aniston?

Did she opt to not have reconstructive surgery on her breasts?

  36. Bodhi says:

Wow, I din’t realize that she had a double mastectomy. I think she & the baby look great & I am nothing but happy for her 🙂

  37. Amy says:

If people like Nicole Richie and Kim Kardashian can warrant magazine covers, why not her? She is a real celebrity and real actress!!

  38. Matt says:

I think the covers ctute and natural, if a bit boring.

She got the cover because she is likeable and relatable, especially after the breast cancer she went through.

  39. Brittany says:

    @DGO
We are both correct; with a BRCA1 mutation, there is a slight risk of cervical, uterine, pancreatic, and colon cancers (hope your relatives are getting colonscopies).
However, BRCA is still a gene related breast and ovarian cancers specifically, and I would assume and HOPE that your relatives are getting their ovaries removed as well if they’re electing to have prophylactic surgery, since ovarian cancer is much more of a sleeping giant than cervical cancer. 🙁

  40. Camille says:

    @Bite me: 😆 😉

@Isa: Hmmm, I don’t see it. I was watching a movie with Laura Linney in it the other day and she reminded me of a much prettier (and a hell of a lot more talented) Aniston though. :-\

And awww, adorable baby, I like the cover. I’m happy for her. 😀

  41. orion70 says:

@BettyBoop…. and I say this as a person currently in treatment for breast cancer, you don’t automatically get a free pass from anyone ever saying anything negative to you ever again. No one’s being that nasty.

I’m guessing she is not one who had to take Tamoxifen, as that launches you into early menopause, never mind what chemo already does to that area.

    Sweet baby.

  42. jemshoes says:

@ #19 Embee: “I was all up in my baby’s business like that, too, until she was big enough to squirm away.”

    hahaha

My 9-month-old’s starting to squirm away now, but he’s still very patient with me. With Daddy, not so much! 😀

I didn’t think there was anything awkward about the shot, but it’s a shame that scoring a People cover is still considered a “win” in celebrity world.

  43. Kim says:

Conrats to her. Beautiful baby. Not a big fan of stars who sell their baby photos but i think Christina is just so excited at her age and after what she has been thru to be a mom. God Bless them both.

  44. beanie says:

I think she looks beautiful and the baby is adorable. She has been through a lot with courage and I’m happy for her she got to have her little one.

  45. lachica says:

the shot is tight because her body currently has issues.

  46. df says:

I really dont see the “awkwardness” in the pic. She has just given birth, actually its quite natural.

  47. Jayna says:

Ah, yes, why is she on there? A classy actress who has been on TV and in the public eye for years, who is respected and who went through hell and carried herself with grace and came out triumphant in her fight against cancer and with her little piece of joy, her new baby. Right, why isn’t trainwreck Charlie Sheen on the cover or the Kardashians or on and on? I loved this cover.

  48. I agree with Jayna #46 completely. I also think that Christina Applegate looks fantastic on the cover of People. She has been through a lot, and I applaud her. I am a huge fan of hers, too – obviously.

  49. Mouse says:

She reminds me of Sarah Chalke in that one picture.

  50. motheroftheyear says:

Yeah, no idea why a non-famewhore, breast cancer survivor and new mother would get a People cover, Kaiser…

She looks amazing, and her baby looks so sweet. God bless her and her beautiful little family. 🙂

  51. Tinkerbell says:

She literally opened her heart up and wrapped it around her baby? Impressive and grotesque.

  52. Trashaddict says:

She is a very rare commodity, she not only survived breast cancer but growing up in Hollywood. I realize she was a little older than most “child” stars during Married with Children, but she seems to have turned into a grounded person. I didn’t like her that much until I saw “The Sweetest Thing” but I thought she was great in that part.

  53. Tess says:

Always liked her, but sweet jeebus, no good will come from using her baby to land a magazine cover.

  54. DGO says:

@Brittany – Christina’s Mom had cervical cancer and she was told she had nearly a 100% chance of getting it, too, without a hysterectomy, so she said she will eventually get one done. As far as my family members go, everyone who’s tested positive automatically get the masectomies/radical hysterectomies. Cancer is vicious.

  55. MayBelle says:

Wow, her fiance is really scary looking.

  56. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

    Baby looks like daddy

  57. UrbanRube says:

Beautiful baby and I’m happy for her. Hope she has a wonderful relationship with the dad… She doesn’t need ANY more hard times.

  58. StraightfromA says:

Soooo nobody is going to say it? Am I the only one whose Gaydar goes off on Christina’s fiance? I do not think for a second he likes poon. Just saying.

BTW, Christina looks good in her pic (youthful) and her baby is gorgeous.

  59. Hil says:

    Good for her!

  60. T. Redd says:

What’s her man’s name? E.T? He gives me the creeps…and why doesn’t he marry her. I’m so over all these Hollywood dingbats and their out-of-wedlock babies (Kate, Natalie etcetcetc). Yep, folks, doesn’t matter what YOU think – kids want stability and they want their parents to be married. Not opinion; FACT.
