Jolie-Pitts start health clinic in Ethiopia and name it after Zahara

The Jolie-Pitts have founded a health clinic in their oldest daughter Zahara’s native Ethiopia through their charitable organization. They put out a press release about the clinic stating that they hope Zahara, three and a half, will run it when she’s old enough. The announcement follows a statement the couple made in an interview accompanying the first published photographs of their now two month old twins that the clinic would be their next charitable project.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s Jolie-Pitt Foundation has made a $2 million donation to the Global Health Committee to establish a center to aid children affected by tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia.

The center will be modeled after the Cambodian Health Committee’s Maddox Chivan Children’s Center in Cambodia, where children receive medical, education and social services.

“Our goal is to transfer the success we have had in Cambodia to Ethiopia where people are needlessly dying of tuberculosis, a curable disease, and HIV/AIDS, a treatable disease,” Jolie said in a statement.

As in Cambodia, where the couple named the center after their eldest child, the Ethiopian branch will be named for Zahara, 3, who was adopted from Ethiopia.

“It is our hope when Zahara is older she will take responsibility of the clinic and continue its mission,” Pitt said in a statement.

The clinic will also focus on tuberculosis care. The disease causes approximately 2 million deaths yearly, and is the largest cause of death worldwide for children and adults with AIDS.

“The fact that poor people continue to die in our world today of TB, a curable disease, because of lack of access to drugs and care is unacceptable,” Pitt said.

The Jolie-Pitt foundation was established in Sept. 2006, when the couple donated $1 million to the Global Action for Children organization and $1 million to Doctors Without Borders.

Some will surely be pessimistic that the Jolie-Pitts chose to make this announcement during the opening weekend of Brad’s new film, Burn After Reading. According to Box Office Mojo, the Coen brothers comedy narrowly squeaked to number one with a $19.4 million gross. Tyler Perry’s The Family That Preys was number two with an estimated $18 million.

Brad and Angelina were paid a reported $14 million for the first photos of their boy and girl twins Knox and Vivienne, which were published in People magazine in the US and Hello! internationally. The money went to their Jolie-Pitt foundation where it will be given to charities favored by the couple. In late June the foundation gave $1 million to refugees of the Iraq war.

  1. dumdee says:

blah dee blah “im angelina jolie, the next mother teresa. ALL HAIL ME!!” bull shit.

  2. I don’t understand the criticism of Pitt-Jolie. Who else gives away their money with more regularity than they do? They could just carry on making money and just saving it to buy more shit for themselves, like every other celebrity out there. How many boats do I need? How many cars can I drive? I don’t hear anybody criticizing Seinfeld, or Trump, or Leno, who do VERY LITTLE for anyone.

  3. Lauri says:

Yeah, Yeah…let the bashing begin. All one needs to do is mention their names here and it sets them off.

I think it sounds like a wonderful thing they are doing, regardless of their motivations.

  4. Enonymous says:

As much as I wish for any celebrity, especially them to stop publicizing their charitable doings so much and so often, I give them credit for their efforts and well doing. I am sure their money will help a lot of people.

  5. Kaiser says:

I love pics where Brad’s got his hand on her a$$. Sexy beasts.

Re: Zahara’s clinic… In Africa, HIV positive people are more susceptible to TB because of their lowered immune systems. They call it “the terrible twos” – or at least they did in that movie The Constant Gardener. Man, I loved that movie.

  6. wow says:

“I don’t hear anybody criticizing Seinfeld, or Trump, or Leno, who do VERY LITTLE for anyone.”

Maybe that’s because they don’t alert the media about it?

  7. geronimo says:

CB, have to dispute this notion that 1. it was done to coincide with the release of BAR and 2. that it would make an iota of different to the movie’s success. (BTW, I know you’re just anticipating the direction some people’s mind will take here.)

To suggest a connection is, to my mind, misunderstanding the fundamentals of the Coen’s approach to film-making and PR. It’s just not their MO. That the J-P’s themselves THOUGHT it might make a different is one thing, that it WOULD actually make a different to box office numbers is a leap too far.

Seriously, do you – does anyone – go see a movie because someone makes a charitable donation? Wild horses and a gun to my head would NEVER get me into a cinema to see a film I wasn’t already intending to see. I am extending the exact same selection criteria and respect to the rest of the cinema-going public, here on this site and out there in the real world! Either you’ll go and see it because you want to see or you won’t because you don’t!! It’s just not a logical connection.

  8. Tina says:

CB_ nice set up there- some people will be pessimistic they announced it during the opening weekend of BAR, I guess after the announcement on saturday evening people ran out to watch the movie and that was why it “SQUAKED” to #1. The blogosphere world never ceases to amaze me.

    ETA:

ITA Gerenimo, the tone of this post is too cynical and that always accompanies most posts with Brad and Angelina.
CB, don’t be too obvious. If they did not announce the donation, some mental nut will be saying they pocketed the money. I am glad they do not care about people second guessing their every move and action.

  9. Leandra says:

That’s right. You don’t hear about other stars giving away a third of their income to charity like Angelina does every year, or setting up AIDS clinics, donating millions to Katrina, etc. etc. Give them some credit for heaven’s sake instead of condemning their good hearts.

  10. Keira says:

I don’t think they look for publicity about their good deeds. But it’s kind of hard to hide an AIDS clinic.

  11. geronimo says:

lol, Tina, very much a misinterpretation of the CB tone! The only reason CB mentioned it is because she was just anticipating the cynicism that the donation would be met with by a handful of posters here who regard the J-Ps as capable of every type of self-promoting skullduggery imaginable!

Very even tone (way too even for some people) displayed at all times by the Celebitchy writers as far as the J-Ps are concerned.

  12. geronimo says:

*make a different* 🙄 And not just once. Twice. 🙄 😳

    Ahem. Make a difference….

  13. Baholicious says:

I get what people are saying about Brangelina and giving. The point is though is that giving to others is not supposed to be easy. There are many people who have very little and manage to give, whether monetarily or with their time.

I am unimpressed. They give so much because they really know they’ve done nothing to deserve the astounding figures they make.

Let them do something useful in terms of AIDs donations and contribute to the Stephen Lewis Foundation. She won’t though because she has a UN Ambassador position. Lewis was the former UN envoy on HIV/AIDS in Africa. She’s still thinking politically and in her own interest. UN photo-ops be damned Angelina, put your money where your mouth is you pretentious fake.

There are so many people on the ground in Africa trying to make a real difference. Adopting an African child and some bricks and mortar mean nothing.

This whole “white man’s burden” thing is appalling. Who’s to say Zahara wants to run a foundation when she’s older? What, she won’t be able to get her own job or carve out her own path? Further proof that their children are seen merely as extensions of their agenda. It’s tokenism and it’s offensive.

  14. Diva says:

Love. Love. Love. That header pic!

Nearly $1.5 mil sounds like a pretty good squeak to me!

  15. manda says:

What if Zahara doesn’t want to run a clinic in Ethiopia when she grows up? She’s in America now, what if she wants to stay here? What if she wants to devote her energy to something else? I just don’t think her parents should be planning her life in such a manner.

  16. WTF?!?! says:

Does it strike anyone else as odd that “It is” their “hope when Zahara is older she will take responsibility of the clinic and continue its mission”?

This child is being raised in the lap of luxury far, far away from the land of her birth, and at 3 1/2, rather than letting her pursue her own dreams and calling, they want her to front their charity because they put her name on it?

I fear for these children’s futures. Maybe they just leased the kids and plan to send them back when the warranty runs out.

  17. Lola says:

I said this in an earlier thread. It is too coincidental that the donation to Iraq came during the release of wanted. Now this one came with Burn after reading. Say what you want but I don’t think this is a coincidence. It is blatant manipulation. For those who will benefit from the clinic, good for them. Make no mistake, charity is charity. My quarrel is exploiting such a humane act for one’s gain. Why make the announcement anyway? I don’t get it.

I have read some fans on this very site saying they will watch an Angelina movie because the money goes to charity. Laineygossip too always says this when promoting their movies.

I can’t wait for a donation to Burma or Hurricane Ike victims when ‘changeling’ is coming out.

  18. daisy424 says:

Agree with Kaiser and Diva, CB I love the header photo, thanks!!! Brad looks protective and sexy with his hand placement…..mmmm.
    Angelina, well beautiful as usual!

    Dumbdee; anger/jealousy issues much?

  19. Diva says:

Oh, FFS, it says they HOPE she does, not that she HAS to. The point being they hope that their kids maintain a connection to their homeland and want to continue to help the people there when they’re adults.

Besides, their hope is that she continues to do exactly what they’re doing, giving money, being the figurehead, not getting her medical degree and being the clinic doctor.

    Sheesh.:P

  20. geronimo says:

Too deep, diva. In some people’s minds, Z is being fitted with a white coat and stethoscope as we write. Not to mention a one-way ticket to Ethiopia being forced into her trembling, ill-prepared little hand. 😥

  21. Diva says:

    Oh, sorry, geronimo, you’re right…

But they needn’t worry, Z won’t just be in charge of an Ethiopian clinic, she will be in charge of the world, right?

    😆

  22. KERRI says:

I agree with you, Diva. Angelina made this statement awhile ago, and the key words here are “It is our Hope that one day Zahara…”. Opening a clinic in Ethiopia has nothing whatsoever do with publicity or promoting their movies.

Besides, shining light on the problems and health issues in third world countries, well, does anyone really have a problem with this?

  23. Anne says:

I agree with Baholicious. The Steven Lewis foundation is the best one to support. But Steven Lewis probably wouldn’t agree to issuing a press release.

That said, the work Jolie/Pitt are doing in Africa is commendable. 1/3 of their income is an impressive amount.

  24. cc says:

Who here doesn’t hope for their child to do something worthwhile? You’d be lying if you said otherwise.

I think this is a great idea and for anyone who is being a jerk about it, where is your clinic? How many kids have you adopted from a country they might (probably would) have died from? Quit throwing stones. Be grateful there are people out there who can afford to this kind of stuff. Publicity aside, it is an awesome thing they are doing for others.

    “Z for President”

  25. Lauri says:

“The point is though is that giving to others is not supposed to be easy.”

Why not? That makes no sense. There’s no reason to martyr oneself in the name of giving. Some people do, and God bless them, but most people don’t hurt themselves financially in order to give.

“Let them do something useful in terms of AIDs donations and contribute to the Stephen Lewis Foundation”

And now not only should they give more, but you should be consulted first as to which charity to give their money to? I sugges that there are many reputable charities out there, and many ways to give. What makes you the authority on which one is the one they “should” be giving to? You are illogical.

You seem to be way too easily offended by a couple of celebrities that you don’t even know. You seem to think you know their motivations and are hypercritical of their generosity.

So if I have $100 and I give $5 to charity, am I a bad person for not giving it all to the charity? By your logic I would be.

I trust that you give the majority of your income to charity?

  26. wow says:

That is the most unnatural picture of those two. Angelina always looks like she’s posing and Brad…he just looks stoned all the time.

  27. Lola says:

WTF, that is a good point. They also hope Maddox runs the Maddox foundation in Cambodia. Shiloh and the other white kids must be the ones to take over the New Orleans project. Remember Maddox made those packs for the soldiers in Iraq. On his own initiative. Some how it found its way into the press.

1/3 or their income goes to charity???? The last I checked, their donations did not even equal the money they have so far made off selling their kids. I would know because they announce every cent they give. Such talk my friend is PR.

  28. Trillion says:

    Bravo, Lauri.

  29. Lola says:

    Wow
‘That is the most unnatural picture of those two. Angelina always looks like she’s posing and Brad…he just looks stoned all the time’.

    ————————————

LOL Brad looks like he is sweating all the time and wants the ground to swallow him. He has looked like that for the last three years. I wonder why????

Now their hair is the most interesting. They have similar hair dye. Which looks a bit cheap .It looks like Brad used most of it and Angelina had the last bits, her hair extensions look like they didn’t quite get enough dye. LOL.

I haven’t seen a picture of them looking comfy in each other’s presence. They always look tense. Then again, there are too many cameras around them all the time. Oh and that little bit about having an illicit affair before they openly got together that dogs their existance and will live with them to eternity.

  30. Megan says:

Even if they are strategically making announcements of charitable donations to coincide with their movie releases I fail to see that as some evil deed. I do believe they are truly charitable people and that if they do manage to somehow increase their box office success and celebrity they will be able to pull in more money that they will likely put back into funding good causes as well as raising awareness. Am I being naive?

  31. Debbie says:

I applaud the celebrities who help & don’t find it necessary to put out a news release – these 2 make me sick.

  32. morgs says:

Awesome that they are doing such great things. I do worry about the Pitt statement of wanting Princess Z to take over.

It just really irks me when parents do this kind of stuff. She’s 3 1/2 for goodness sake. I realize that this might be their dream for her, but please, let the girl grow up and do what she wants to do.

I wonder if these kids are going to have major issues of not living up to their parents expectations or actions.

  33. Hmm says:

Any head of a charitable organization would like to generate the type of publicity for their organizations that Brangelina generates. These two have consistently put their money where their mouths are and have made a difference in the world. Sorry, if some of you find it offensive and if you believe that giving away millions of dollars every year just isn’t enough. We are bombarded with images of excess in Hollywood every day. We see pictures of celebs doing nothing but shopping and partying, yet we never say, why don’t they do something more meaningful. No, we wait to criticize Brangelina for trying to make the world better and then we deconstruct their every move to make them seem evil and calculated. Let’s criticize how much they give, who they give it to, who they didn’t give it to and let’s pretend that these criticisms are really about charity. I didn’t notice anyone criticizing Matt Damon for doing charity in a public way. People save their spite for Brangelina because they are obsessed with the past. You need only to read the ridiculous “Brad seems miserable BS.” It’s sad that people can’t give credit where credit is due and admit that they’ve been inordinately generous with their time and their money.

  34. Baholicious says:

    Lauri,

Where did I say someone should martyr themselves? When I said giving should not be easy, that comes right out of the new testament, so don’t crizzap on me, take it up with that Jesus guy.

I make no apologies for saying the Stephen Lewis Foundation (I spelled his name wrong the first time) is the best HIV/AIDs assistance and relief organization out there in terms of what it has done to help the dying and their families, and women intentionally infected with HIV through rape as a weapon of tribal war. People interested in doing something to help should check it out.

If the Jolie-Pitts gave a rat’s about helping people with AIDs, that clinic would be in South Africa, or the Congo, or Rwanda.

And, frankly, how much I give to any charity is none of your or anyone’s business since I don’t make a point of announcing it to the media in the first place.

  35. Baholicious says:

@ Trillion: oh, and it’s ‘Brava’ hon, not ‘Bravo’ since Lauri is likely female.

  36. someone says:

They should have announced that the twins gave 2 mil for the clinic, the money didn’t really come out of AJ and BPs pocket..and I seriously doubt that Zahara will want to take it over when shes an adult..so thier hopes will be dashed…boo hoo

  37. Zoe says:

Wow, Lola et al. you are effing creepy. 👿 Shiver.

  38. Lola says:

I just find the Zahara addition a bit cheesy. Like saying. Oh by the way, we also adopted a child from Ethiopia, lest you forget. You don’t see Meg Ryan saying Daisy True should open orphages in China. Since they mentioned this particular donation in their interview in people magazine’s twin issue, I can’t see why they need to release a statement to mention it again during the weekend when Brad’s movie is coming out. Notice that it is Brad this time who is speaking in the statement, coincidence? I think not. Is it OK. Absolutely not. If it was, then their charitable acts would not draw so much controversy. Lets not forget that they exploit little defenceless kids to make this money that they give to charity.

  39. Allabouteve says:

Instead of complaining some of you should help. This is the project from Cambodia that they have been supporting, every little bit helps:

Jolie-Pitt Foundation Donates $2 Million to Global Health Committee to Fight HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis in Ethiopia
Grant will support first treatment program for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in Ethiopia

Boston, MA– The Global Health Committee (GHC) has announced it will receive $2 million dollars from the Jolie-Pitt Foundation to bring life-saving medicines to Ethiopians suffering from HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. The money will be used to create a center for AIDS and tuberculosis-affected children in the capital city of Addis Ababa, and to help establish a program to treat drug-resistant tuberculosis in children and adults.

  40. Margie says:

    Loved your comment @25, Lauri.

I am one of the top donors in my office through our federal organization. You’re right, giving does not have to be hard. It comes out of my check each time before I even see it. Each person who gives gets to select from a lot of different charities that qualify, but any of us would be exceedingly annoyed if we were told that our charity wasn’t the coolest so we should put our money elsewhere.

Most would also be annoyed if it were suggested that they were not giving enough, in the opinion of a coworker, who then wanted to keep her giving private.

  41. DLR says:

Wow, I can’t imagine the pressure on those kids to “take over” those clinics their parents are setting up in their names around the world. What if the kids don’t want anything to do with the clinics when they’re “of age”? Maybe Angelina and Brad should have just left the kids’ names out of those clinics, and when the kids were old enough they could be asked if they wanted to take over the clinics in their country of birth.

  42. Syko says:

Lola, you are certifiable. I’ve never seen so much hatred spew out of one person. You must be deeply unhappy.

  43. Chris says:

I am so tried of reading about celebrities donating money; to me this almost always is a publicity stunt for the celebrity, not the charity.

One year ago the NY Times ran a story “Who’s the Most Charitable of Us All? Celebrities Don’t Always Make the Cut” http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/10/business/media/10philanthropy.html

The story looks at The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s list of “America’s Most Generous Donors” in 2006.

The only celebrity on the list is Oprah Winfrey (her the fourth year), Winfrey was #36, pledging and paying out $58.3 million in 2005. Warren E. Buffett, the investor, friend of LeBron James topped the list, pledging $43.5 billion, yes that is BILLION.

The article points out that Jerry Lewis is the most effective celebrity for charitable causes, followed by Oprah Winfrey

It articles also points out “… while few people doubt Ms. Jolie’s sincerity in the causes she takes up, she did gamely admit to Forbes magazine last year that her humanitarian works helped divert attention from her colorful personal life.”

  44. Allabouteve says:

The ignorance some of you exhibit is mind boggling. That they hope their children will take over does not mean that will be their sole job. Brad and Angelina are very busy thespians and they have manage all these other programs, what is wrong in hoping their children will follow a humanitarian route as opposed to flashing the paps knickerless.

The school my daughter goes to, Steven King built a theater for the school and named it after his mother, it happens all the time but when the JP’s do, it becomes a crime against humanity.

Some of you need to read Mountains beyond mountain, a book about Dr. Farmer who started and Aids/TB clinic in Haiti about 10 years ago and the extent they go to raise funds. This is not like donating your used bag to be auctioned off, this is a long time commitment, so you can snicker all you want at least they are saving lives and can see the result of their donation, much like their Make it Right foundation, many celebrities donated money after Katrina, where is all that money now. But these two invest not only their money but their time and they can see the result, hate them all you want but you cannot argue with the result.

  45. Baholicious says:

@ Margie: Oh FFS. I give up. “…which charity is the coolest” that’s is the most stunted thing I’ve read today. Congratulations!

“I am one of the top donors”; “I don’t even see it come off my pay”. You just proved that you are one of these people who give so you can blab to other people about how altruistic you are – and it’s so great, you don’t even “notice” giving! How convenient. I bet you’d notice if you didn’t get your tax receipt for it though.

You don’t give to crow about it. You may now join the Jolie-Pitt line which forms to the left.

  46. Debra77 says:

I think there is nothing wrong with them hoping that Z will take over the foundation. I am in no way comparing, but that is what the Kennedy’s have tried to do with their children and family. They tried to instill in their kids that with wealth comes great responsibility. If you are raised trying to help others, seeing your parents give so much, then maybe you will carry that trait on in your adult life. As far as them announcing their donations… The media probably picked up on it, and therefore they made a statement. Everything they do is in print or on the Television or even online. But it is unfair to criticize them for giving to others. Does anyone else see how ridiculous that sounds?.. Criticizing someone because they are trying to help others. Maybe I am just too dense to get it.

  47. KateNonymous says:

It’s better than the Michael Douglas/Catherine Zeta Jones request that their wedding gifts be donations to a fund so that their son could learn about charity when he got older. At least the Jolie-Pitts are using their own money for this.

  48. I am tired of hearing about how great that Jolie-Pitt are.

    Its just getting old.

  49. daisy424 says:

Kandy????; What facts did lola state? Her 3 trite comments were opinion, not facts.
I smell a rat, much too deliberate.

  50. Bodhi says:

    Fakts? What fakts?

Lola stated her opinion, as we all do. There were no fakts involved.

  51. RAN says:

Daisy, now who’s the baby in the gravatar? Leave it to you to be the stylish one with constantly evolving pictures 😉

  52. daisy424 says:

Hey RAN, my icon last week, the blonde toddler and this little munchkin are my two granddaughters. This one has an attitude and loves chocolate 😀
They both have Papa wrapped around their little fingers.

  53. Codzilla says:

Daisy: Your granddaughters are gorgeous. And I’m not just saying that — they’re both truly adorable.

I don’t even remember what this thread was about …

  54. daisy424 says:

Thanks Codzilla 😉 they are 3 & 4 now. She got a kick out of seeing her picture here on CB.

  55. RAN says:

@ Daisy – I’m with Codzilla, your granddaughters are absolutely adorable! Sounds to me like they have grandma wrapped around their cute little fingers – just like Papa 😉
Her sweet little face just makes me smile 🙂

  56. countrybabe says:

Allabouteve, you gave us the number to their foundation,uh thanks but they can fund it themselves. Plus it’s the kid’s money. Why do people keep saying they give 1/3 of their money?
Chris, that article is interesting and very telling. 😉

  57. Orangejulius says:

Thanks, Daisy and RAN for saving me from Lola bashing……Ah, yes, beautiful grandchildren, still looking forward to those.

  58. pamela says:

Thank God Brad and Angie dont give two hoots what anyone says about them. They just continue living their lives with their beautiful children, and doing what they know is right to help their fellow man. Way to go.

  59. Gracie says:

The world is filled with such great need….I’m surprised anyone gets criticized for making donations.

Yes, they put out a press release, but who cares? The very rich start organizations with their names attached, give donations to institutions which then name buildings after them, etc.

What impresses me most is the focus on TB, a very unglamorous disease.

  60. sj says:

this world is getting scary to live in, first, the Jolie/Pitt says,(its their hopes) not mandatory z will have an interest, that is good parenting, giving her direction, and how old is Lola, 5? no facts at all. just childish attacks, this couple is beautiful, also they are trying to bring awareness, Oprah, George, Matt Damon, Ben affleck, all contribute, but the Jolie/Pitt are more popular, i read some where posters were claiming that they did not give the money from the twins pictures, they can’t win with narrow minded people, they are not your typical shallow Hollywood people, thank god for that, i love hearing the news.

  61. Blondediva says:

Spielberg is top celebrity earner at $332 million. Oprah is 4th at $225 mil. and she is 1st on the recent most generous celebrity giver list with $50 mil donated in 2007. The Jolie-Pitts are way down on the list in earnings(Brad at 55th and Ange at 78th.) Even their combined earnings don’t put them in the top 25, and yet their donations for 2007 put them 5th!! And their monetary donations do not include the time they put in helping in the States and other countries. Regardless of what you think of their personal lives, you have to admit that they are extremely generous when it comes to charity. I wish more celebs(including those well-paid athletes) would be so giving.

  62. wow says:

their combined earnings don’t put them in the top 25, and yet their donations for 2007 put them 5th!!

–Not everybody publicly announces their donations. Lots, and I mean LOTS of people donate anonomously.

  63. Randy says:

Giving money is always a good thing. However this money is not from their income. It is from the selling of their children. The really haven’t given any of their own money lately. They have made 20 million from the sale of pictures (Shiloh 4 million, Pax, 2 million, Twins 14 million). They have given no where near this much away. What I don’t like is the double press releases. They make a press release to say that they gave the money to charity from the twins pictures sale and then do another press release when they give the money to the clinic. It is the same money.

Also many stars do give this much they just don’t announce it. The press has not right to donations unless the stars make it known.

Also pamela they care very much what people think or else they wound not keep giving press releases and talking to People Magazine about the rumors (i.e. her pants were not ripped in London and other stories)

  64. Diva says:

Actually, charitable donations are reported, regardless of who you are, unless you’re not claiming them on your taxes. So, while other celebrities and rich people might not be sending out press releases, but they do declare their contributions. That’s where the lists come from, so, they’re accurate, and your argument holds no water.

  65. JaundiceMachine says:

Bitches make a lot of money. Bitches donate a lot of money. I fail to see the problem.

  66. Guest says:

Where exactly are charitable donations reported. For example can I look up how much you gave? No. Taxes are private and cannot be released to the public. Stars can give under different names and no one will ever know who really gave. Brad even said that on his project in NO that some big donors did not want their names known. Those donations will never become public knowledge. For example do you really think that Johnny Depp gives nothing? Or Matt Damon. If it is reported could you please tell me how much these two stars gave?

Randy, please dont be dense. They operate a Foundation. Every donation they give is reported and acoountable to the IRS. The same way donations from Bill and Melinda Gates donations from their Foundation are reported.

Oprah does not hesitate to trumpet her donations, yet she gets no flack for her charitable donations. You will have to dig way deeper for negative things to criticize them for. You are running out of options. It is so sad that people can be so blinded by hate for others that they refuse so use logic in their arguments.

People who matter recognise the good they are trying to do. A few detractors on a gossip blog do not factor into their decisions. TRUST.

^^^should read “The same way donations from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are reported”

  69. Nina says:

Most of you people are just jealous that they are beautiful people with lost of money who want to instill a sense of giving and morality in their children, and you probably are not.

So what if they tell everyone what they do? If I started a clinic in my child’s home country I would want her to have an interest in it. They’ve always tried to keep their adopted kids’ ethnic heritage. She should know where she comes from, and she should know about the suffering still going on everywhere in Africa because of bad… did I say bad?… I meant terribly terminally ill politics.

Like we say in my part of Africa, tamatiesous… basically it means whatever.

So to all of you sick of them I say tamatiesous. Get over yourselves.

  70. Jacqueline says:

that;s told all those critics Nina – when can a generous donation, on-going, to a needy cause, EVER BE a negative gesture??
Yes, the focus on TB & AIDS is sensible; I believe these two illnesses cause the most unnecessary mortalities in those parts of Africa.
Angelina’s main ‘raison d’etre’ has been around helping the most unfortunate children around the globe – how can that be selfish & self-centred, hello?? I think the focus she gives these causes entails safeguards around donation-abuse; she monitors the projects and not just dishes out tho dough. We apprefciate Angelina & Brad for their charitable works in the UK, and also enjoy their films and seeing their fab children growing up.

While it is pretty admirable and noble to see celebrities man up and help out foreign nations, why not donate some to your home country? (yes, I am aware that Jolie and Pitt have helped in New Orleans, but I’m talking about a bigger picture.)

We’re in the middle of an economic crisis with more people jobless and homeless and many on the verge of losing their homes. We have millions of children in orphanages. Our public education system is failing. Millions of people affected by HIV/AIDS and other illnesses here in America. Healthcare is a joke. Natural disasters like Hurricane Ike who left many without electricity, water, or even a home.

I’m not bashing them or anyone, I’m just curious as to why celebrities are always so eager to help out overseas while seemingly neglecting some of the same issues at home?
