I have 4 tats as of now; all are easily hidden, but each has meaning to me, and is a milestone for a point in my life. I am highly intelligent, and most people who don’t see my tattoos are very surprised that I have them, when the subject comes up. So, all you tat–haters out there, walk a mile in someone else’s shoes before you use blanket generalizations and put–downs for those of us who choose to be inked.
There is a wonderful saying, a guy named Dodi in Baton Rouge gave out bumper stickers with each tattoo; it says, “American by birth, tattooed by choice”.

You know, I read this thread and thought about how to civilly reply to an issue that has gone unresolved since the Ethan Hawke thread debacle.

Perhaps if I explained the meaning of each of my pieces – including an intricate memorial piece for my dead mother that I first designed when I lost her at age 11 – perhaps then people might come to understand depth, gravity and emotion that comes with making such a lifelong commitment.

Maybe if I explained the complex philosophy and deliberate references to such artists as Dali, Shakespeare, Locke and Socrates – who have opened my eyes to the world and have broadened my perspective – it might make people think twice about calling inked individuals “trashy”.

And then I realized, I just don’t give a fuck what judgmental pricks on a celebrity forum think of me. Later, boners.

so anyone who thinks tattoos are not attractive can’t state that opinion here?

i think YOU GUYS are the IRRATIONAL ONES for being upset about anyone here stating they don’t like tattoos….

by the way, Shane said he thinks tattoos look trashy, he didn’t say the people who have them are trash. you all over reacted and over read his comments because you are obviously highly sensitive regarding anyone saying anything negative about tattoos.

geronimo, thanks for saying what I was trying to say…you said it much better then I could have I would just like to add some stats for Shanes Benefit :

Thirty-six percent of those ages 18 to 25, and 40 percent of those ages 26 to 40, have at least one tattoo, according to a fall 2006 survey by the Pew Research Center.

The National Geographic News stated in April 2000 that 15% of Americans were tattooed (or approximately 40 million people!)

Esquire Magazine estimated in March 2002 that 1 in 8 Americans was tattooed.

According to the American Society of Dermatological Surgery, they stated in 2005, that of all the people they treat with laser and light therapy, only only 6% are getting a tattoo removed.

Harris Poll, 2003, estimates that fully 36% of those aged 25-29 have one or more tattoos.

A 2006 a study done by the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that 24% of Americans between 18 and 50 are tattooed; that’s almost one in four. And the survey showed that about 36% of Americans age 18 to 29 have at least one tattoo!

Further :
Many Americans who do not have tattoos said they think that people with tattoos are less attractive (42%), less sexy (36%) and less intelligent (31%). They also think that those with tattoos are more rebellious (57%). In contrast, only 29% of those with tattoos think they are more rebellious.

hmm…. where is it that 42 percent is a majority? NO WHERE…please keep your opinions about tattoos to yourself, they really aren’t relevant here

I have to agree with Shane. I think tattoos are unflattering, on just about everyone. They just look cheap.

I think that he will get out of gaol and go on one huge drug and alcohol binge with mates and Amy in toe… I have concerns if Amys body will be able to cope with the big binge though.

Shane – It most certainly is NOT the opinion of most untattooed people. I don’t have any, my o/h does and a lot of my friends do and I love most of them, just don’t choose to have any myself. And even when I don’t like a particular tattoo, it’s that I’m forming an opinion on, not the person. Your overwhelming need to declare every tattooed celeb on here trashy is dull, tiresome and ignorant.

Take responsibility for your own opinions and stop trying to rope the rest of us into your frankly irrational bias.

Exactly what I’m saying. Have some class. Don’t get tattoos. They make EVERYONE look trashy. Sorry you don’t want to hear that. It’s just the primary consensus of most untattooed people.

I take offense to that.
Tattoos are only as trashy as the individual they grace. And just because Prince Charming has a load of “jail house chic” tats – no doubt inspired from late-night benders and raves – doesn’t mean the rest of us who sport ink are grubby little leeches content to slum off of society. Have some class.
