Oscar Fashion: Helena Bonham Carter isn’t kooky enough in Colleen Atwood

Don’t hate me, but I was seriously disappointed in Helena Bonham Carter. She wore Colleen Atwood – the dress was velvet and taffeta, and it had a big bustle on the back. I disliked the velvet strapped-cardigan thing, and the dress was really wrinkled, and… I don’t know. If HBC wants to go kooky and silly, she should. If she wants to go classy and elegant, she should. What I hate is this in-between crap. It looks like she got in a fight with herself over how crazy she should go.

BUT – good hair. And I loved her Union Jack calf-detail (I think it was just a tied-on flag). And I loved how many cutaways there were for HBC and Tim Burton – the camera was on them constantly throughout the ceremony. Loved HBC’s reaction shots, and I love that she doesn’t feel it necessary to hide her bitchface. I also had so much sympathy for all of the women who were nominated in Best Supporting Actress – Kirk Douglas as presenter… and the way he dragged it out. That was just cruel to the ladies.

gah, i hate helena’s look wherever she goes. somebody ought to take a scissors to that bedhead of hers. why, i wouldnt be surprised, if one day, a crow flew out of her hair, and if you looked closer you’d find a nest with little chirping hatchlings in there… and all manner of shiny things a bird collects.

and shes always looking so petrified caught on camera. what’s with that?

  4. merski says:

When the HELL did velvet become high-fashion?! :/

  5. di butler says:

Pretty sure that is a Union Jack flask holder. They are made to be worn there. HBC is fantastic. She made the best faces last night, she was soooo over it.

  6. Venus says:

Love her, but she always wears her shoes a 1/2 size too big.

  7. Rita says:

She’s a hoot. She always looks like she just had a quickie with the valet.

NOOOOOOO WHERE IS THE SWEET DELICIOUS CRAZY??////

  9. Cherry Rose says:

I was a bit disappointed. I thought she was going to go all out. Ah well, she still rocks.

  10. TXCinderella says:

Was this dress a costume from one of her movies? What’s with the Union Jack leg garter? Weird. She should have just carried a Union Jack clutch or a belt. Maybe Union Jack flags sticking out of that rat’s nest on her head.

  11. Quest says:

I love this woman and although she somewhat disappointed me in her conservative choice, she still rocks it… I missed the flag on the carpet – thanks for that pic.

  12. sisi says:

my biggest disappointment with this dress were the fabrics. I can buy this stuff at the local market for 3 dollars a meter. It should have been higher quality. Oscar quality.

Her face was flawless as always though, I was just staring at her on the red carpet. Loved her slight diva gesture when she took her glasses off for the photographers. The way she tilted her head sideways away from the camera’s, such a graceful, slightly theatrical moment. Love her.

  13. k says:

Yes, it was a costume by a costume designer she likes. She wanted to celebrate film, not fashion, with a film costume.

  14. Rasputina says:

My God how I despise velvet, especially when it’s paired with another shiny textiles.

  15. lilred says:

@ Rita I just assumed that’s why her dress was all wrinkled, or she and Tim decided to pass time in the limo while waiting for their turn on the red carpet.

  16. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

@merski When Scarlett O’Hara wore her drapes!

I love HBC.. She’s so original and doesnt fake anything..

    I am such a fan.

  17. Solveig says:

I was disappointed too. The dress was bad, and when I say ‘bad’ I really mean it. It wasn’t odd, quirky or what, it was simply an awful gown and what’s up with those wrinkles in the bottom half?

  18. beth says:

id be meaner if i didnt like her, but she IS a hoot, and unpretentious too.

  19. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

    sorry see above

  20. Patricia says:

Doesn’t she know how much we count on her to liven these shows up???

  21. Sparkly says:

I love her! She looks good, and I’m glad she pseudo-gussied for the Oscars. She did have her costume designer make the outfit, I read, because she wanted to “celebrate film and not fashion”. I actually think she *would* wear a bird’s nest in her hair and totally pull it off. That would be awesome.

  22. Az says:

Shut up,I love her. The top of that dress looks like that time Tyra had the models cut up a t-shirt to use as an evening dress.

  23. Camille says:

She is beautiful and can do no wrong in my book. I <3 her, she looked great 😀 .

  24. Jeri says:

Agree with the Kirk comment. He is a great actor and he deserved to be on stage but not announcing major winners (unless he had help). It was disrespectful to him and the nominees.

  25. Emily says:

Disappointed in her too, I wanted more crazy! I love the faces she makes when she poses on red carpets, though, they’re hilariously over the top.
