She was a plain, mousey kid who happened to discover that she loved the Bettie Paige/burlesque/hyper-feminine thing. She's really all about 'look what you can make of yourself' if you find the look that makes you happy and feel like 'you'. I also find her quite refreshing, especially in an age where performers (particularly musicians e.g. Madonna, Britney) have made it their stock in trade to re-invent themselves not just for every album but for every new music video. She's distinctive and stylish and that makes her beautiful, IMHO.
