Millions still don't have electricity or water, including fully half of my coworkers who were told they may eventually get electricity in November. NOVEMBER. Many supermarkets still only have canned and dry goods, no refrigerated goods or fresh foods. And this is Houston, 4th largest city in the USA. 2 weeks post Ike. 600 fully loaded FEMA trucks sat 6 days in a Houston parking lot with food, water and ice. They weren't allowed to move to distribute the goods until they got the word from FEMA, no matter how much the state and city officials pleaded for them to start. This just resolved 2 days ago. Beyond pathetic. Federal involvement in anything generally equals mismanagement and doom. And sorry Bono, we can't help the rest of the Third World until our own Third World (New Orleans, and now Galveston) is stabilized. In Galveston and broad areas south of Houston there's no electricity, no natural gas, little gasoline, food shortages, no running or clean water, swarms of mosquitos, and lots of open sewage. This will take a while to fix. And I am all for NOT allowing ANY rebuilding in areas of Galveston and New Orleans where this is likely to recur when the next big hurricane hits. Our insurance industry can't take this shit. The financial catastrophe is adding to Americas already morbid financial problems. I really get annoyed when people don't understand an issue. And its really very simple: the government actually has a chance to make a profit here AND help out a financial institution(s). Now what they do with this "extra" money who knows, hopefully they use it to pay down the national debt. But by no means is this a "bailout" and by no means will it costs 700 billion dollars because the government is buying assets that will generate capitol.
