Bazaar magazine claims Kirsten Dunst’s smile not airbrushed on cover

Kirsten Dunst has taken a lot of crap for her teeth over the years. For some reason she has never fixed her smile, even though she has prominent snaggle teeth. Honestly, every time I write a story about her there’s inevitably a few “why hasn’t she corrected that?” comments, even though none of the topics has ever been Kirsten’s mouth. So it does draw a distracting amount of attention. But I kind of like that she doesn’t feel the need to be exactly like everyone else and accepts herself for who she is. I also have a really bad overbite, so I might be sort of jaded and defensive.

All that said, it’s pretty clear Kirsten’s smile was photoshopped for the cover of October’s issue of Bazaar. However everyone over there claims that’s not the case – which would mean Kirsten’s smile miraculously – and temporarily – improved.

Say, what happened to Kirsten Dunst’s teeth? They’re looking so … straight! Dunst sports a brighter, whiter and less crooked grin on the October cover of Harper’s Bazaar magazine, prompting some to wonder if the famously snaggle-toothed star finally paid a visit to a cosmetic dentist.

It’s no secret that airbrushers run rampant on glossy magazine covers, but approving such a touch-up would be uncharacteristic for the “Spider-Man” star. Dunst - who recently split from summer love Justin Long - has always embraced her uneven smile, despite pressures from Hollywood and her own family.

“That’s one of the things I like about me. Messed-up teeth are so sexy,” she has said.

“Kirsten has a lovely smile and clearly she is happy to be on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar,” a spokesperson for the mag told WWD.com. “Her teeth were not fixed on the cover or on the inside pages.”

[From the Daily News]

I’m not sure if messed up anything is sexy, but whatever. I’d be fine with Kirsten fixing her teeth. And on a close-up head shot like that, I’d be fine with Bazaar photoshopping it. You can’t really blame them – otherwise the cover would be a distraction instead of an attraction. It just bugs me that it’s pretty clear that they’re insulting us with their lie and instead kissing Kirsten’s ass. We’ve got eyes. They do work. Those are not the same smiles. Thanks.

Here’s Kirsten at the NYC premiere of “Hounddog” on September 16th – well after the Bazaar shoot. Snaggle tooth still intact. Images thanks to Fame.

  1. I don’t think her smile looks airbrushed.

  2. i think she looks cute with her teeth the way they are. everyone in hollywood is so “perfect” and all the same. its kind of refreshing that she chooses to just be herself (with her teeth situation anyway).
it makes her a little bit more unique in that way. gives her some personality.

  3. I agree with Kristin, I don’t think it’s airbrushed either.

  4. All the rest of her is airbrushed but we’re expected to believe that they didn’t touch her teeth? They’ve obviously been whitened and tidied up but not drastically so they’re still recognisable as her teeth. No matter but why the lie?

  5. For the purposes of argument - a straight-on camera angle like that would hide a lot of uneven toothiness, especially when they are so bright white in that shot.

  6. i think they are her teeth. if you look at the teeth flanking the middle you’ll see they’re not flat and straight.

  7. Yes, agree on camera angle and yes they are her teeth but they’ve still IMO been touched up!

  8. I always liked her sweet “fang” teeth. Reminds me of the first movie I saw her in. It is a special something. I do not care for the FAKE press on bonding teeth parts or flat grinded down square teeth. I can’t believe people with tiny teeth even get them done like that.

  9. They might both be right… like, they haven’t airbrushed it AND she hasn’t corrected it. Maybe she was using a combination of a camera friendly shot and a… snap on smile???? That would also explain how come they were so bright without airbrushing.
Besides, I don’t like her yellow crooked smile and I don’t like her BECAUSE of that. She’s in the show-business for God’s sake, she should correct it, just like doctors CPAs and lawyers should dress fine, and the like.
If one wants to keep crooked teeth or cellulitic bum, they better work in some other industry.

  10. Beautiful and natural-looking teeth are more like pearls or fine porcelain. So many celebs are sporting overbleached teeth and bad veneers that look more like opaque white ceramic bathroom tiles. They may not have airbrushed away the snaggle teeth, but they sure turned up the white factor way too high. Many cameras nowadays actually have filters that make smiles look brighter. :D

On a related note, only Bozo looks good in clown-red lipstick. Check it out:

  11. I agree with the people above…. all of hollywood is so plastic and fake, its good shes strong enough to be herself and keep her defining features.

  12. eh, maybe just enough to remove the everyman stains from the teeth and balance the lighting.

  13. I think the French have it right with their idea of jolie laide. Not everything has to be perfect to be sexy. I think the idea that “messed up” things can’t be sexy is an unfortunate one. And perhaps also a bit ignorant.

  14. Airbrushed or not, Dunst looks like a serial killer in that cover photo. Frightening…and this is coming from someone who actually kinda likes her.

  15. airbrushed or not her smile on the cover looks creepy.. who the hell smiles like that?

  16. I think Miss Kitteh (heh heh love that word) is possibly closest to the truth - the whole photo has been lightened up, almost to the point of being over-exposed. This, along with some filters and a tooth-friendly pose would mean very minimal touching up is needed. TBH I don’t think her teeth look half as white in this photo as some other starlets’ in candids.

I agree with Kirsten on the “messed-up” part. I always thought that David Bowie was just that little bit sexier with his old teeth - a little bit more raw and more dangerous when he smiled *ahem*

An imperfection (within reason) adds such character to the face and in the case of an actor, helps the character more realistic and more easily relatable to.

  17. I agree that the pic doesn’t look airbrushed - just lightened up (a lot).

Compared to how she looks in movies, I would say that this is totally the smile she has when she’s getting paid for it, of course it’s not her “real” smile.

  18. i think the snaggle is much worse when she is on an angle or when she does that small smile where her mouth wants to close but the teeth stick out… these could be her teeth - straight on and wide smile. she should walk arround like this all the time ’cause she looks happy and cute!

  19. I like her “messed up teeth” it’s really just the one snaggle tooth.
Can’t agree more on the David Bowie comment. Nothing is a bigger turn-off to me than something that’s obviously fake. Noses, teeth, tits, hair (unless it’s edgy fake, love that), nails. Basically, just everyone “pretty” enough to be in a movie.
    Can’t wait for the backlash!

  20. I guess I never really realized that Kirsten is a fellow snaggletooth (my own teef kinda preclude me from being judgmental about anyone else’s). But now that this fact is made apparent, I’m a little upset that there’s some tom foolery going on in the editing process. I wish my teeth were cutely imperfect (imperfectly cute?) like Dunst’s, and the fact that either party is being dishonest about a photoshoot makes me feel all the more uncomfortable about smiling.

(Ps - A small but gracious “thank you” to the dented smile supporters out there. It’s nice to see that even on a snarky gossip blog, commenters are still human and accept small flaws for what they are - small.)

  21. Straight on shot - high contrast and lighting. I understand all the “shes in show business….” comments but honestly come on people! don’t hate on a girl for being real! We’ve forgotten what normal people look like these days! My teeth aren’t perfect either and I bet you if she got her teeth fixed she would be hated on her for that too!

  22. To me they look the same on the cover, just whiter, which, you know, is par for the course.

  23. I think it’s funny how comments “I hate this about Hollywood etc” are here on a gosip blog. You complain but can’t turn away. As for K’s teeth it’s amazing what UV teeth treatment, great lighting and a super photographer can do.

  24. They look the same to me, but it is the color of that nasty lipstick I don’t like…Her lips are not full enough to carry that off..It makes her look mean and evil!!!

  25. Since when do wolfy eye teeth constitute a ’snaggle’? I’m not sure why press comes down so hard on celebrities who do not ascribe to some outlandish notion of perfection (and equally on those who try and fix imperfection), but I’m glad the bar on our own standards is not raised as high. I love Kirsten Dunst’s smile - it’s unique and utterly charming, and anyone who says otherwise is clearly squirming beneath a giant green thumb of envy.

  26. I would agree with some prior posters that her teeth were a bit airbrushed since her left eyetooth looks like it’s turned outward a bit in the second photo but, it’s straight in the mag pic. If Madonna can eat corn through a picket fence and still make millions-more power to those who can keep their imperfect teeth while making it in Hollywood. I also totally have an overbite and when I saw “Pretty in Pink” last week, I noticed Molly Ringwald does too! Celebs with bad teeth make me smile!
