Gwyneth Paltrow is close to inking a deal to record a country album

wenn3229723

Yesterday, I wrote about Gwyneth Paltrow and whether we should even make fun of her anymore. You guys had a lot to say, and I totally hear you. I’ve always thought that Gwyneth was a snot, a sanctimonious elitist, and completely worthy of any mockery you wanted to throw her way. I’ve just been feeling a pang of sympathy for her lately – I honestly think she’s in a bad place. Her makeup has been trashy, she’s been wearing lots of “look at me, I’m so young and I have a great body” clothes, her face was looking jacked and Botoxy for a while, and this whole mess with her “singing” career… well, I just think Gwyneth is kind of rough lately. But if you want to continue to mock her Goopy ways, by all means. I’ll cosign. Especially if you want to laugh at this latest news – it seems Gwyneth is close to signing a deal to record her own album. Her own COUNTRY album. Oh, Goop.

Gwyneth Paltrow, who’s been shopping for a music deal, is in advanced talks with Atlantic Records, Page Six has learned. The Oscar-winning actress is poised to sign a contract with the Warner Music-owned label to produce a country album following her starring role in “Country Strong.”

Paltrow, 38, is married to Chris Martin, lead singer of Coldplay, which is signed to EMI. She recently showed off her singing skills on “Glee,” at the Country Music Awards, the Grammys — where she writhed in a tight, black body suit on a baby grand piano to perform “Forget You” with Cee Lo — and at the Oscars, where she performed the nominated song “Coming Home.”

A source told us, “Gwyneth’s agents have been talking to a number of labels about landing her a substantial record deal. Those who have heard the music say it’s country pop. Many labels would be reluctant to give a deal to a star whose first priority is film, but in recent weeks there have been discussions with Atlantic. Gwyneth is a very different name for Atlantic, and one who brings a lot of recognition.” Its roster includes Sean Paul, B.o.B, T.I., James Blunt, Janelle Monae, Zero 7, Phil Collins and Kid Rock.

Paltrow recently said she was discussing possible contracts with several labels, and said on the Oscars red carpet, “We’re talking about it now. So we’ll see.”

She also reprises her role on “Glee” as substitute teacher Holly Holiday tomorrow, saying she accepted the part because: “I thought, ‘How much fun it would it be to sing and dance and just be ridiculous and silly?’ I’m just having so much fun. My parts were usually quite serious, and I was looking for something fun and different to do.”

While some music critics were not bowled over by her performances, Gwyneth has big aspirations. She’d like to record with Jay-Z, a close friend of her and Martin. She added during red-carpet interviews, “I think we’d be a good combination.”

Paltrow’s rep didn’t get back to us, and Atlantic declined to comment.

[From Page Six]

More songs about double-wides? More songs about drinkin’ and brawlin’ and twangin’? Jesus. Okay, I get that you don’t NEED a good voice to record an album. Katy Perry and Rihanna prove that, over and over. But why this midlife career change for a woman who is basically a more elite version of a Real Housewife? Her voice isn’t great, she can’t carry a movie by herself anymore, her marriage to certified rock star Chris Martin is… not going very well. Is the answer for Gwyneth to start a new career as some kind of Faith Hill wannabe?

i wish she would go away.
if she thinks people hate on her now she’s in for a rude awakening.
    she’s asking for it.

  2. The_Porscha says:

Wow. This really is just circling sad territory. She should remake All About Eve. She probably would never agree to it, given the connotation, but I could see her being amazing in it.

  3. Rita says:

Some of the country blogs have picked up on her pretentiousness and there ain’t no snarky like country snarky. Some of the commenters pointed out the stuff @Jenjen listed yesterday.

Fartin’ snow-globe blue birds in Hollywood is one thing, but lookin’ down your nose at country folk will just getcha a boot in yer ass.

  4. Hautie says:

    Hahahaha!

I find it hard to believe any legit country music label would be truly interested in her. Geez Faith Hill can barely sell an album right now. And she can actually preform live.

    Maybe they are humoring her.

Or maybe her agent is humoring her. By telling her she is wanted. That she is a true singer.

So I am going to have to hear it from the record company, to believe they have any remote interest in her.

And she has officially crossed over the the Lohan area of hustling.

  5. brin says:

@Rita….bet this news just makes Leann’s day!

  6. Tiffany says:

I am not trying to be a cynic but I see a seperation announcement coming around the time this album comes out. I think at this point it seems he does not care so why should she. Everything is about marketing and Martin would should s*it a brick before a seperation over shadows the bands album release.

  7. courtney says:

um she’s far from the first oscar nominated/winning actress to get a record deal or vice versa others include Diana Ross Kate Winslet Liza Minelli Cher Jennifer Hudson ect. at least her voice wasn’t replaced in the movie Country Strong like Audrey Hepburns was in My Fair Lady with Marnie Nixons of course Audrey had been nominated for 4 best actress oscars before that. for the films Roman Holiday [She won} Sabrina The Nun’s Story and Breakfast at Tiffany’s and would receive her 5th after that for wait until dark. and of course Joanne Woodward sang in two of the films she was oscar nominated for one of which she won the oscar for. correct those be 1957’s The Three Faces Of Eve & 1968’s Rachel Rahcel

  8. Tess says:

Her hands….Too smooth, too manicured, too natural-looking with those delicately classic rings in the 2nd picture. They sum up her credibility problem as a country singer.

You have to believe that a female country singer washed dishes, vacuumed, and mopped floors at sometime in her life, and that rough hands tell that story. No words needed.

  9. Can’t wait to see those abysmal sales figures!

  10. CooCooCatchoo says:

She was in Nashville last week for CRS – that’s where country radio stations around the world come to be wined and dined by record companies to get them to play their artists’ songs. She did at least one showcase during the week. I think she’s closer to getting a record deal than we think.
I live in Nashville, and think it’s actually kind of cool that Nicole Kidman and GP have homes here. Nashville is a beautiful city, and our people are friendly.
I hope that she and her husband are doing okay – it’s always sad when a family breaks up. I give GP a pat on the back for continuing to work, and for exploring new paths for her career. By all accounts, she’s been lovely to the people here. A little fresh air and the beautiful scenery may be just what she needs now. I wish people would cut her a little slack.

  11. The_Porscha says:

Courtney – Jennifer Hudson was a singer prior to being an actress, and had a record deal prior to an Oscar. Diana Ross had two record deals prior to her awards. Cher also had a record deal prior to that. Those are not women who woke up one day and decided an Oscar wasn’t enough. It’s not that Paltrow getting a record deal is terrible on its face, it’s all the “trying” she’s suddenly doing… for what?

  12. Crash2GO2 says:

If she can pull it off good for her. I confess I still have a soft spot for the ol’ Goop. She’s like a little sis with kind of a sad life despite all the trappings and pretensions.

  13. Bite me says:

    Meh, her face scares me

  14. cranky chica says:

What I find interesting about the whole GP situation is this : She’s getting too old to find great acting parts, and “singer” is potentially a career that she could “work” for the next fifty years (see Etta James, Loretta Lynn, Dolly…of course these women were *talented*).

It’s gotta suck to not be the “it” girl when that was your only calling card.

  15. TxGal says:

That first picture makes her look like her nose is up in the air just like her attitude LOL.

I really don’t care for her especially when she has this attitude of being Ms. Know-it-all. And like one of the people indicated here her hands are extremely well taken care of for someone that brags about being a housewife. Also never felt that she deserve the Oscar. Never considered her that good of an actress.

  16. annaloo says:

    DELUSION!

Well, best of luck.. think of how HILARIOUS this will be to watch. Bring it on!

    COMMON SENSE NOTE TO GWYNETH:

Oh Gwynnie, I think the posters are right: you are surrounded by BAD enabling people! Maybe, it would have been smarter to record a kids’ album or something SAFE down the family way… fun poppy tunes for kids, a holiday album, etc…. but country?? You won’t even feed your kids sugar…what makes you think you are in touch with what makes someone connect to a country singer?

Ms. Paltrow, Nashville was being POLITE to you on that first go round because that is how they are raised. Don’t get all crazy thinking that you’re going to carry country.

  17. bored says:

Maybe she’s surrounded herself by bad advisors or something. It’s truly astonishing that she thinks this is a good idea. You’d think her hubby would intervene, being a real musician and all..

  18. Susan says:

    She’s knee deep in it.

Wish she’d stick to being pretentious hollywood royalty. At least she’s really good at that.

The move to doing country music screams desperation, especially considering some of the previous comments she’s made about American pop culture.

What’s next? CD signing at your local Walmart?

  19. FatJenny WearsTights says:

It’s sad, cause I believe she’s struggling to stay relevant, but she doesn’t know which way to do it.

She wrote a cooking book, she promoted her work-out lifestyle (even though she looks like a fish stick), she married a rocker and became a mom (she named her child Apple, for heavens sake), she’s trying to look young and now she wants to be a country singer. Oh gawd…put the brakes already!

  20. annaloo says:

@CooCooCatchoo — I think you are wonderful for the sympathy, pity and level-headedness you are showing… (which, honestly, for a multimillionaire, connected, blond, private sessioned pilates toned scion of Hollywood I think may be TOO kind =0D)…

But, I also noticed, you didn’t mention Gwyneth’s singing or how you were affected by it: just how she needs R&R.

I don’t know, but it made me think, pity is not something that should earn anyone’s mediocrity – no matter how connected – a stage at the Grand Ole Opry, the Apollo Theater, Carnegie Hall or Madison Square Garden.

We expect to see the best in these places. As we should.

As consumers, I want to demand more of our entertainment.. this industry is just giving music contracts/television shows/films to anyone these days and it’s really lowered the bar.

Is it me, or is TOO MUCH IS JUST SO BAD these days?

  21. Feebee says:

WTF? LOL. Question asked of Blake Lively (average mall girl or true beauty) could be translated to Paltrow’s voice… average mall voice or true talent.

I think we all know the answer. Thought maybe I’d say GOOD mall voice.

  22. curmudgeon says:

I love it. She’s going to try to sell records to an audience she wouldnt be caught dead associating herself with. Remember the whole. England is so much classier than the U.S. thing? That stuff doesn’t go over very well with a country audience.

  23. Tiffany says:

She did it. Just inked with Atlantic. Ugh. Nashville will kick her butt. Trust me on that one.

  24. funny_girl says:

Leave Gwyneth alone! All this hate really is jealousy. She took time off from her career to have kids and is only really now getting back into the full swing of it..the problem is, Hollywood has moved on, being the notoriously fickle industry it is. So what if she’s trying to diversify? That’s a smart thing to do. At least she’s having a go 🙂

I think she’s doing great.. amazing body that even some 20yrs old don’t have, two healthy kids, good looks, lots of money, lots of useful connections..

I pity her with Chris Martin though-she said in an interview he’s bad at opening up which to me spelled serious marital trouble. I think she could’ve done so much better than Chris tbh. The guy doesn’t even attend award shows with her!

  25. Ally says:

@Tiffany: Oh no! Now we’re in for another promotional round where she goes to every talk show under the sun and strums her guitar along to her nasal soulfulness.

I really see this whole music pursuit with her as a passive-aggressive dig at her husband (“look, it’s easy!”), and/or a desperate bid for his attention and respect.

  26. melinda says:

Ok, I thought I was done mocking her, but why does she have to make it so darn difficult?! How do you not mock her senselessly for this?

  27. Hmmm says:

    Vanity. All is vanity.

Seriously, if she wanted to go in a new direction, she’d get someone to tell her the bald-faced truth. And she would work on her supposed gifts in private until she was really good. The world stage is not the place for seeing how it goes. She does audiences a disservice. Instead stuff just falls in her lap while I’m thinking of all those struggling, real musicians and singers out there.

    Yep, all is vanity.

  28. danielle says:

annaloo – good call – she might have just made it on a children’s album. Country? No. Just no. Don’t even tell me she listened to a country tune without laughing before she made Country Strong. Chris Martin must be having a cow.

  29. the original bellaluna says:

Oh, dear. No. No ma’am. Not one teeny-tiny little bit.

When her weak attempt at a song came on, I had to choose between paying attention to traffic and changing the station. Guess which one I chose?

  30. CooCooCatchoo says:

@annaloo, I don’t think that Gwenyth has a strong singing voice. It’s passable, and not terrible, but i don’t think her vocal talent matters much to them. Unfortunately, strong talent (far too often, as we know) doesn’t seem to be a requisite to fame anymore. I think the record execs in Nashville love the cache that an Academy award winning actress would bring to their label. It brings a whole level of (perceived) “class” to the genre. I’m not 100% sold that GP feels confident singing, though. Her live performances have been cringeworthy. However, if she really wants to make a go at it, and commits to doing the project right (vocal and performance coaching and good songs), she’ll probably be successful. She’ll have to endure some of the hoakiness that comes with bring a country act – meeting the regular folk who buy and play your records, for instance. Wonder if that part will be the toughest part for her.
The labels going to throw tons of money at this project for sure. It’s tough for any woman turning 40 – I imagine its even tougher for someone in an industry where youth rules. Whether your a regular old minivan mom or a Beverly Hills princess, middle age sucks!

  31. mia girl says:

    Here’s my prediction…
She teams up with a major Nashville song-writer to write the tracks on the record & a big name producer to give her some instant cred.

Two months before the release of her album, she announces a split from her husband

All the press for the album basically has her saying that during the hardest personal time in her life, she found solace/communion with country music and it helped her through the bad times. The songs on the record will all be “very personal” for her and written about her own heartbreak and eventual “kick him out” “I’m too good for you” discovery of her own self-worth. One of those self-worth songs will be co-written and sung as a duet with Taylor Swift.

And much to our chagrin, more people than we think will buy her record.

  32. malachais says:

Everyone seems to run to country music during a desperate phase in their career – look at Jessica Simpson and Michelle Branch, they both sucked for the most part.

I’m a huge old country music fan and hate this country pop crap. IMO she should stick to acting, she sings decent but I wish she’d just pull herself together and suck it up. Just because she made a movie, (THAT FLOPPED) doesn’t mean there is fanbase of country music listeners that are willing to buy an album.

  33. Sparkly says:

I LOVE when people claim jealousy. Yeah, cause it can’t be legitimate snark. The Goop is just too perfect for that! Oh, how I wish and pray every night to wake up JUST like her.

  34. Maureen says:

The singing thing will bomb as well.

  35. CooCooCatchoo says:

She’s gonna have to work hard to shed some of the perceptions about her – the whole elitist, ice goddess thing isn’t going to fly when it comes to winning over country fans. There may be some Walmart signings and other shticky stuff she’s just going to have to resign herself to doing. But who knows? She might enjoy letting her hair down a bit and loosening up. She won’t have to spend her day being a glamour puss – it may actually be freeing and make her happier. She’s still gorgeous, and she has plenty of f*** you money. People in Nashville don’t live and die by pilates, Botox and $7K designer boots. But we love authenticity. Let your guard down, Gwynnie and you’ll have a successful music career 🙂

  36. lili says:

@sparkly – at least she looks like a real person – with aspirations, interests, non-plastic figure, normal background and normal personal life. she has everything that people aspire to. so yes, IMO it is totally jealousy. she is so refreshingly normal!!

  37. jover says:

Since she likes england, and england has a rich theatre tradition, why doesn’t she immerse herself in the theatre – just asking.

  38. mln76 says:

@jover because she tried the “gritty actress” thing a few years ago and it didn’t work out for her. She wants the attention of being a big superstar.

  39. Cherry Rose says:

@ lili – Gwyneth doesn’t exactly have a “normal” background. Even by Hollywood standards, she’s considered elite. Just look at who her parents are.

And I highly doubt the reason we snark on Gwyneth is because we’re jealous of her. What’s to be jealous of?

Her marriage to a douche who never goes to any award shows with her and never seems to have the time of day for her? The fact that she’s so removed on how the majority of people in the world really live? The fact that her career is nowhere were it used to be?

    Seriously.

Anyway. I’m quite curious on exactly what Gwyneth is going to sing about. She always tries to project the image that everything in her life is perfect, especially her marriage.

  40. Ari says:

I saw her in that movie Hush this weekend on cable and just wanted to punch her face through the screen.

  41. Sumodo1 says:

I agree with “miagirl” that, for the Fishstick, the road to divorce runs through Nashville. The photo ops will be ridiculous. I would LOVE to see her decked out in rhinestone western-wear and fring-y things. Hee-Haw!

  42. Sparkly says:

Normal? No. I wholeheartedly disagree. Also disagree with “everything people aspire to”. Obviously you are speaking for yourself, as are we. I’m very content with who I am, my current aspirations, my marriage, etc. She is constantly trying to be something she’s not, hardcore pushing her fake lifestyles, and she does it with smarmy elitist preaching. Anyone who looks to her as a “perfect” role model might consider seriously reevaluating their priorities.

  43. harfang says:

I’m not a big fan of new country, like at all. But I’ve noticed that it features a LOT of VERY talented female singers. Honestly, if Teh Goop had done a crappy pop thing, it would have been less ridiculous. Her voice is thin and weak. Not to mention that the sanctimonious sheltered-princess nature of her blog gives her plenty of demerits even without her voice sucking. I’m starting to wish she’d either go away, or do something truly interesting, like go into recovery or come out or beat up the Coldplay dude in self-defense, if we’re gonna have to hear about her all the time.

  44. lucy2 says:

Well, I think we saw that coming, didn’t we? I think she has a decent voice, but so do a lot of people and it’s nothing that would make me rush out to buy music. And I don’t see her having any special spark that would set her apart.

I too disagree about her having a normal background. She was very privileged and very well connected, still is, and seems to like it that way. And I agree with others – it’s pretty tough to look down your nose at people and then expect them to buy your music.

  45. dj says:

I really don’t listen to country music. However, I know there are really good female singers like Martina McBride and Gretchen Wilson that would simply blow the doors off G.P. There is no comparison to their voices. Also, the first thing that came to mind was her (someone else mentioned too) comment about how much (paraphrasing here) better England was to America re: intellectual dinner conversation, etc. Country music listeners usually remember things like that. Remember the Dixie Chicks after they bashed Bush? Yikes.

  46. the original bellaluna says:

@ Sumodo 1 – And don’t forget the country-fried hair. That’ll be the perfect topper to the outfit! 😀

  47. lili says:

by normal – i mean that she did not act like a weirdo in her teens or 20s, that both her parents seem to be well balanced persons, that she has at least some university education, that she had both her children in reasonable age, from one husband, that she takes care of her own health and her family`s, etc. and as to her health-and-spiritually-aware lifestyle – most people i know have same values – it is called 21st century. sure, most of her work is cr*p (although – wait – didn`t she get an oscar for her acting???), but at least she tries new things. haters complain about actresses who always take on same roles, for being predictable, and equally – about those who venture into new territories – for being fake. Some people make zero sense.

  48. Gwenevere says:

mia girl if I could put money down on your prediction I would in a heartbeat! I think you’ve nailed it.

  49. original kate says:

an album? that means we will never be rid of her. oh, noes!

  50. Nikki says:

    Yikes.

  51. Patrice says:

Ummm, WHY? Because “Country Strong” did so well?
Sorry Gwynnie, it’s one thing to have a pleasant, everyday singing voice, but let’s not get carried away here and try for music superstardom….

  52. Betts says:

Born in Cali. Raised in NYC. Exclusive East Coast girls’ school. Dated Brad Pitt. Steven Spielberg got her one of her first jobs. Married British and has a fishmonger.

Really listened to country music for the first time last year bc she was prepping for a role.

Can I have whatever it is she’s smoking because it must be really, REALLY good.

  53. Annaloo says:

    OMG– @ Betts

You reminded me of that commercial where the cowboys were checking out how their salsa was made in “NEW YORK CITY?!” HA!

@CooCooCatchoo – I agree with you, she’ll have to work hard, suuuuper hard. Even you don’t sound convinced! ;0) She’s def got her work cut out for her. But like so many other posters, I think the truth why so many of us go into third-grade-Mean-Girl-Mode is bc she doesn’t connect with a lot of women in the US, much less those who listen to country music. THe slams against her are not isolated, but consistently the same ones heard about her over many, many years: she’s out-of-touch.

And I know she’s in a tough industry for women over 40.. but truth be told, she’s not a late 30’s cocktail waitress or hostess in LA or NYC who is staring at 40 right around the corner. THAT’S tough. Gwyn doesn’t need to work another day in her life if she doesn’t want to… sure, it makes sense to diversify, but she’s not struggling. Gwyneth’s never really suffered.

And that is probably the crux of why she will probably fail (or at best, be lukewarm) at anything bigger than the socialite/fashionista/upper crust following she has.

  54. Confuzzled says:

When did she ever carry a movie? Name one film of hers that people said “OMG GWYNNIEE!!!!11” and rushed off to see?

She has the acting range of a plank. The music videos will be painful and filled with all her famous friends to disguise her complete lack of musical talent.

  55. gg says:

Rita is right. Country music fans and compadres ain’t gonna cotton to Miss Pretend English Lady.

  56. kazoo says:

i bet she & the label are aiming for taylor swift’s fans’ moms’. taylor swift for grown ups.

  57. badrockandroll says:

This really annoys me. First, I love real country music, as well as folk and Americana. There are countless extremely talented women in those genres who have been left by the wayside by mainstream record companies because they are too old, too heavy, too non-compliant or too unphotogenic, or lord help them, all of the above. Listen to Joy Lynn White, Connie Smith, any of the Tres Chicas, Neko Case, well the list is endless, and you will hear incredible vocal prowess, writing skills and musicianship. Well, you can’t listen to them unless you go to YouTube or their websites or EBay. Radio won’t touch them either. But Our Gwennie gets a record deal, on the basis of what exactly? A pallid performance in a dreadful film? So wrong, on so many levels!

  58. Diane says:

I don’t understand why everybody’s so hard on her husband…maybe he sees what so many of us see…an elitist overachiever who thinks she can do anything she puts her mind to well just because she’s Goop. Maybe he sees her as the delusional snob she is. Can you blame him for not wanting to follow her to all these events so he can hold her handbag and watch her embarrass herself onstage? I’m sure he was happy being The Musician in the family. He probably worked hard to get where he is in the music industry. Then here comes his wife and she wakes up one morning and decides she’s a country music star. And gets a record contract after one exceedingly feeble effort, thanks to those celebrity-worshipping toadies who are running Atlantic Records these days. Ahmet Ertegun must be spinning in his grave.

  59. TheProcastinator says:

Where on earth did all this ‘their marriage is on the rocks’ stuff come from? I have yet to see any remote evidence that points to that.

  60. TheProcastinator says:

lili, most human beings are a a bit weird in their teens and 20s, especially their teens. I completely normal. Its called growing up.

  61. jemshoes says:

Well, I’ll say this for Goopy, delusional or not: she has guts!
