Katie Holmes’ good makeup & Stella McCartney jacket: cute or cheap?

wenn5626478

These are photos of Katie Holmes’ appearance last night at the “premiere” of The Decision. What’s that, you ask? Katie stars in the short film (commercial) called The Decision, which promotes John Frieda Precision Foam Colour. The commerical is about the Katie Holmes character “Joan Hudson” who is “a high-profile actress who leaves her colorist and decides to start coloring her own hair.” Katie said about the experience: “I love the idea of doing a short film about something I feel is really important to women! I also love being a part of promoting a product that is available to all women.”

So… this whole thing is basically just an advertisement for hair color. That being said, I’m intrigued. I’ve been meaning to dye the grey out for a few years now, and I never get around to it. Should I try John Frieda Precision Foam Colour? The Kate-bot endorses it!

Regarding Katie’s ensemble: the jacket is Stella McCartney, the pants are Alexander Wang. FabSugar has more details here – it’s interesting to me that the ensemble actually costs $2400-plus. As I’ve said before, Katie is just one of those women who makes expensive clothes look super-cheap. That being said, Katie does look kind of cute here. Her makeup in particular looks great.

    cute, for a parking valet

  2. sasa says:

If only she weren’t Smirky McSmirkess she would actually look good here.

  3. brin says:

Makeup looks good (and she’s smiling!) but I don’t like the jacket and all this to-do over a hair color commercial is absurd.

  4. Dana says:

Until she got all huffy about Anne Hathaway’s imitation of her never noticed that weird side smirk of hers. Now I see it every photo.

  5. Diane says:

She really needs to smile and show some teeth instead of always smirking.

  6. LittleFATMe says:

I loved her years ago in a white suit and I love this look on her. (Not THIS jacket, but the idea of this style.) I like. (Scroll down a touch: http://www.lasplash.com/publish/cat_index_Style_and_Fashion/Fashion_Trend_Watch-Back_in_White_printer.php )
As far as foam hair color goes – Clairol used to make some (I think it was them) in pink and purple and I used the crap out of it! Every time I die my hair, to this day, I wish that shit was foam because it was easy and fun!

  7. Diane says:

Stella McCartney has zero talent for fashion. Her clothes range from just plain drab to hideous. And she’s always got that puss on her face. If she wasn’t Paul’s daughter, she’d be selling somebody else’s designs behind the counter in some shop.

  8. Saskia says:

Her makeup is a huge improvement over her usual, which often makes her look sallow and ill. Her hair looks okay, but the ends are kinda raggedy. You’d think she’d be bothered to get a trim before trotting herself out for an overblown hair commercial like it’s some kind of career milestone. I hate EVERYTHING she’s wearing, but that’s pretty much standard with her. Girlfriend is such a perma-mess.

But where’s her wee husband person? Maybe he’s tucked in one of her cater waiter jacket pockets?

  9. danielle says:

    Not bad…for her.

  10. BW says:

The jacket looks cheap because it doesn’t fit. The shoulder seam is about an inch in from the edge of her actual shoulder. And it’s too tight in the hips, which is causing the those inverted V lines under the closure. She’s rolling up the sleeves sloppily, which means the sleeves aren’t long enough and aren’t meant to be rolled up. Basically, it’s too small.

  11. Praise St. Angie! says:

so, she shows up at the “premiere” of a COMMERCIAL? (I realize she “stars” in it, but that’s what she’s been reduced to…)

yeah, hooking up with Tiny Tom really boosted her career, huh?

  12. krissy says:

    @ Kaiser
My mom loves that foam hair color stuff, I don’t like the colors it comes in but she is obsessed with it.

  13. Sue says:

She sounds dumb “I love the idea of doing a short film about something I feel is really important to women! REALLY because hair dye is such an important issue for woman, I don’t know how the woman rights mist this important issue she such a joke.

  14. Belle Epoch says:

    too much cheek filler

lately women are gaunt all over but with chipmunk cheeks

  15. Heatheradair says:

YES to the shoes. Nice try to the rest of it. BUT, she looks alert….and her hair does look shiny and nice…..

  16. sapphire says:

Her make up is better, but she’s just not put together. And if you’re shilling for hair color, don’t you think you should put more effort into your own?

  17. Melanie says:

Diane: Hear, hear! It is like the emperors new clothes with Stella. She is the most overrated designer ever. She even creates ugly jewelry. Have you seen her fruit caftans for spring? Stupid as hell.

  18. RHONYC says:

if it weren’t for that f*ckface smirk on her lips i’d say cute. 🙁

  19. Isabel says:

Her makeup and shoes are cute.

I really don’t think haircolor is an important issue to women in general, though. Who uploaded that program into her?

  20. Jennifer says:

I just don’t really care for the purple-ish eyeshadow on her. But I like the outfit she has on – for once!

  21. Sam says:

Awful shoes! I subscribe to the belief that if one wears those cut-off trousers, one should never wear closed-in or closed-toe shoes. The jacket is cute, but doesn’t really fit! Also, she really needs to get her hair trimmed about two inches.

  22. whitedaisy says:

    Meh, underwhelmed.
I do see the ever-present smirk, however.

  23. Jackson says:

So-so makeup. Fug outfit. Shoes are still cheesy – she wore them last week and they looked just as bad then.

  24. Marytere says:

She used to be cute, but Tom has drained all the life from her. He really does to all of his wives. Nicole Kidman (she still is boring)started a good career after they split. I’m not saying KH is such a great actress, but there was so much more in her career that some hair color commercial

  25. Dany says:

I don’t know… to me she always looks kind of sedated and this weird forced smile doesn’t make it any better. Can’t remember her looking happy since her wedding. Sometimes she reminds me of Diana with these always sad eyes. Poor kid – with all her money.

  26. Photo JoJo says:

I’m not a fan of her outfit but those shoes are fabulous. I’m a sucker for anything with polka dots.

  27. Roma says:

Don’t dye the grey, just use something like Clairol’s shimmering lights shampoo & conditioner twice a week.

I got my 65yo mother hooked on it and now her greys look like intentional highlites.

  28. maggiegrace says:

Sad – or dead – eyes…yes. I wonder if her smirk is actually due to a neurological/anatomical issue/defect, or if it’s just a habit of hers…to do the one-sided smile. Seriously. She’s been mocked about it so much that you’d think she’d stop doing it.

  29. Nanea says:

Way to go, Katie, split ends and all!

What’s next? Will she attend the opening of a can of worms?

I don’t get how all these people whose job it is to pose professionally on a red carpet have such a bad posture.

  30. Sam says:

She looks nice, but she should have gone with a more tailored, fitted blazer and a killer pair of black Louboutins pumps it would have looked even better…Katie, needs a stylist pronto!

  31. bluhare says:

Stella McCartney put the Chloe fashion house back on the map when she was the head designer. She’s known for what she can do to a pair of pants, in terms of tailoring. A classic McCartney pantsuit is a thing of beauty.

OK, all that being said, I don’t care for her style for the most part unless she does a classic look. Her clothes don’t look good on me. Not that I can afford to buy any.

  32. k says:

I think she’s subconscious about her teeth — bulimia past? I actually like this outfit on her. I am usually not a fan of her style.

  33. Siren6 says:

It’s not great, but it’s better.

  34. Cha Cha Loca says:

Her sense of style is non existant. Just hire a stylist already. With all that money she manages to like shit everytime I see her.

  35. Anti-icon says:

UGLY! Stella McCartney is hit or miss. However, I’m madly in love with my Stella McCartney gym bag/roll up canvas tote that I got at Marshalls for $15.

However, Katie Holmes is a constant fashion disaster. How can she be launching a fashion line?????

  36. Myra says:

She should have never gotten the nose job(jobs?). She was so beautiful during her early Dawson Creek days.

  37. LadyBert62 says:

Her smile always looks fake to me – perhaps because it is crooked and only seems to involve half of her face. I always wonder what is she really thinking behind that “smile.”

  38. KCT says:

YAY to Diane for saying what most of us honestly think. The celebrities probably feel the same way but still wear it for the name.

Famous designer name does not equal good fashion.

As for Katie, she doesn’t seem to try very hard. She looked more put together in years past but maybe now she feels she doesn’t have to.

  39. NC native says:

She looks like she had a stroke… And now only one side of her face can smile.

  40. Myra says:

I think the problem is that her style used to be really low key, and it really worked for her. But since she got with Cruise she’s been forced into putting on this style icon act. She’s always seemed uncomfortable in the fancier, more over-the-top trendy clothes to me and she also probably doesn’t enjoy having to pick something out or being told what to wear, with what she has being the choices.

I think if she was allowed to buy what she really wanted her style would probably be between Jennifer Aniston’s and Sienna Miller’s at this point. Just easy going and simple, but in a good way.

  41. mollyo says:

stop with the smirk already- she looks so pretentious.

  42. Mouse says:

Still dead behind the eyes, doughy faced and talentless. Pass.

  43. luls says:

as an ACTRESS, shudnt she have more control over her face??? unless she LIKES her wierd 1-sided smirk, i dont c why she keeps doin it, especially in light of the fact that shes made fun of, becuz it!

(i dont believe its uncontrollable either, becuz its much more subtle in the movies she makes)

    uughh. quit it katie! pls!

  44. Emma says:

    A) She’s had something (minor) done to her face. She usually has a worry line on her forehead and very tiny laugh lines… even though I think she’s quite young, isn’t she? Anyway, there’s some tightening around her eyes and her forehead creases are completely gone. That’s why you like her makeup, Kaiser, but it’s so well done that it’s easy to just look at her and so, oh she looks nice.

    B) I HATE it when celebrities endorse hair color and drugstore makeup. HATE it. I know I’m picking on Katie here and she’s definitely not the only one, but she’s available to pick on right now. Because obviously, no matter what Kate-Bot says in her “short film” (commercial), she is going to a salon every four weeks for a professional color job. Just like Drew Barrymore sure as hell doesn’t use Covergirl makeup and I HIGHLY doubt Jessica Alba would lower herself to using drugstore L’Oreal cosmetics and hair color. It’s ridiculous and akin to false advertising. Because no matter what you do, you Will. Not. Get. Their. Results. Their results come from basing their entire life around skin and hair care, salon treatments, emergency microdermabrasion every time a pimple appears, and Chanel makeup.

  45. Stephanie says:

    Her smile drives me nuts.

  46. Francesca says:

Does only 1/2 of her face work? why the ceaseless smirking??

  47. laura says:

Kaiser- I had a hairdresser once tell me, “you can’t go wrong w/ a box from the drug store that is within a shade or two of your natural color.” Boxes have come a long way since the 80s. I do my own color to cover the gray (and maybe lighten it a shade). I mean, medium dark brown is kind of idiot proof. I’m BAD about not understanding directions in general and I’ve managed to work it out. I’ve been doing it myself for nearly 10 years now. [Boxes that say RED or BLACK are tricky to time right. Dry hair tends to absorb more color, so less time is needed – otherwise, so you get the oversaturated look.]

ANd if you do make a mistake, the shampoo called ALOE RID, I think it’s a Nexxus product, (try Walmart for the generic) will loosen the hair cuticle and it will let go of some of the color. Only use it 1-2x/week, tho.

  48. LBeees says:

I don’t think she is allowed to smile out of both sides of her mouth. It’s like, against Suri’s rules. (WHo am I kidding. Her half-smiling was KStew’s lip biting back before Twilight was but a gleam in Stephanie Meyer’s Mormon eye)

  49. DiaBLa says:

She should have used her “sewing Machine” and tailored that jacket to fit her…….then it would not have been half bad. But not to go to your opening of your commercial..I mean short film.

  50. buzzaroo says:

What the hell happened to Katie’s career?

  51. Celebitchy says:

@Kaiser – try Clairol Nice ‘N Easy. It works really well – I use it! I don’t know about all this foam stuff lately.

  52. truetalk says:
