Lady Gaga releases country remix of “Born This Way”: better or worse?

gaga3

You know how I hated Lady Gaga’s video for “Born This Way” and how the sheer forced-weirdness of the video might have influenced my thoughts on the actual song? Yeah, I’m going to have to take some of it back. First of all, three mornings in a row this week I watched the “Born This Way” video on VH1 while I ate breakfast, and while I still don’t care for the video, the song is catchy in that particular way Gaga’s songs are always catchy. So, I’ve already been singing it to myself all week. And now Gaga has dropped a “remix” on us. It’s the country version of “Born This Way”! Um… is it okay if I LOVE this version?

Gaga debuted it on Twitter this morning, and the remix was co produced by Gaga and Fernando Garibay. I heart this version so much. It’s so bluesy, and now I want Gaga to perform it on the CMAs or something. Hey, if they let Gwyneth in, why not Gaga?!?

Here’s the old version, for comparison:

Didn’t this hag rip the song off from a Korean group? Why is she getting so much credit?

  2. YAY says:

    I love it too! 🙂

  3. Rita says:

I want to see Carrie Underwood perform it at the CMA’s wearing Gaga’s outfit (pictured). Now that would be a ratings smash and a career ender, even for Carrie. (Ender? No pun intended)

    Don’t be a rainbow be a flag
Don’t drink tea just lick the bag.

I understand how hard it must have been for you to admit to loving a Gaga song. But as a huge fan of hers, I’m so happy to read your post!! I was not fond of her at all until the 2009 MTV Awards. I’ve seen her live and I will be a fan for life.

  6. Quest says:

Could have done without the ass shot (last pic)

  7. MarenGermany says:

i hate to see her butt in the last picture.
i like her, i like this new version, but i seriously dont need to see her ass.

  8. Karen says:

    @Rita – Laughing My F**ing A** Off!!!!!

  9. The_Porscha says:

God, this version is SO MUCH better. I wish they’d play this on the radio instead of the “real” version.

I just had a thought, and it seems weird but I think it’d work, if she teamed up with a rock or blues male artist to duet on this version of the track, it’d be bananas. Like Bruce Springsteen or Prince, although I’m of the opinion they’re both too good to be involved in that sort of gimmick, I think it could be so crazy it’d work. Imagine the hot guitar solos. Just sayin’.

  10. curmudgeon says:

    @Kaiser
I understand. I want to hater her. I do. Every time she speaks and says the most incredibly stupid drivel. And yet alot of the songs are catchy. I have Bad Romance on my ipod and I feel a little shame everytime I hear it.

  11. Rita says:

I just checked the country blog sites and they’re not happy. In other words,

“Don’t walk into my kitchen with your muddy boots playing a harmonica with accoustical guitar and call it country.”

  12. KO says:

@irishserra – You might be talking about SNSD’s “Be Happy”. There’s too strong a similarity there. It wouldn’t be surprising, and American producers have been working in Korea pumping out killer music. Here’s an article and comparison youtube vid in it:

  13. tiredofrumers says:

express yourself meets the roseanne theme song!

    i like it!

  14. Sue says:

I’m so loving this version and so is everyone on the other website I go to.

  15. Samantha says:

Her stuff is catchy, I will admit. But how is this song “country”? They threw a harmonica in and a little guitar (thanks, soundboard) and add a slower beat to it and now its country? Meh. I like the remix version but its processed like all her stuff.

  16. Oi says:

Yeah, that’s not country. And she needs to stop pandering.

  17. SHump says:

    This version is awesomesause!!

  18. LeManda says:

Wow. I had never gotten around to watching the original version video. Wow.
I like both versions of the song.

  19. Cat says:

Not a huge difference for me.

  20. Silver says:

Well I don’t know if she should classify this as country. It doesn’t fit with the genre at all, I mean country is more than just how the song sounds. Anyway, I like the remix much better than the original, it’s just more of a rock song than a country one. Too bad the original couldn’t have been a rock version instead of an electronic one.

  21. T-RAE says:

    LOVES IT!!!!!

  22. kiko says:

what’s next a death metal remix?please!i have to be seriously drunk to like it..

  23. flutters says:

The remix is MUCH better than the original but like people are saying, it’s not country. It’s more like a rock power ballad.

I’m a little annoyed at Gaga over this because IMO calling it country is just a marketing move to get attention. Call it a rock version and she doesn’t get nearly as much attention. But at least this version is pretty good.

  24. Susan says:

    Mega meh.

  25. searching4grace says:

@ Curmudgeon, I feel that shame, too. I like this version. I’ve got Poker Face, Alejandro AND Bad Romance. *sighs* i know. I just don’t let that music mingle with my Tori Amos/Adele/Counting Crows/Metallica music. I hide my shame in subfolders.

  26. myplaylist says:

she doesn’t know to sing, she always need some atention, and she want to shock people because she is not pretty and she dont know to sing

  27. kelbear says:

I wouldn’t say it’s country at all but actually like it. She should of skipped the other version and just did this one.

  28. harajuku girl says:

She can sing – very very well in fact, without the need to rely on autotune. Listen to her live, she can definitely sing. I dont think she is ugly, not cookie cutter perfect but I find her quite attractive and her body is gorgeous.

  29. dahlia1947 says:

I don’t want to hear the song because I’m a very visual person. So I will just say that I like her makeup in the top pic! Nice rosy color on her face and she has a nice butt. She does!

  30. original kate says:

worse. every stunt she pulls is worse than the previous stunt.

  31. hoganbcmj says:

I’d like to see her perform this version at the CMAs in a pretty pastel floral dress with soft curls and minimal makeup, just to switch it up for a change.

  32. Conando says:

    lame. harmonica =/= country.

  33. DetRiotgirl says:

@searching4grace LOL! I do the same thing. Her music resides on my gym playlist and ONLY my gym playlist!

As for this new version, it’s an improvement. But, an improvement on a turd like the original can only really result in a prettier turd. So, yeah, I’m still not feeling it.

  34. KatScorp says:

I love country and while I do like this remix, I don’t think that it is true country. Even Shakira uses a harmonica; it doesn’t equal “country”.

  35. gg says:

Saying she can’t sing is just ignant.

  36. GT says:

    I love Ga Ga!!!!!!!!!!!!

  37. So-and-so says:

Everything she does is a marketing ploy. Booze swilling, dope smoking, ass selling attention whore. If someone thinks something that comes out of that is art, it’s just coincidence.

  38. luls says:

IT WUD DEF BE 1000times BETTER WITHOUT the REALLY CHEESY lines; “dont be a drag, just be a queen” and “it doesnt matter if you love him or HIM”.

The song’s msg wud be more versatile & applicable TO ALL. (like Christina’s ‘beautiful’)

But i guess this bitch only cares about pleasing her GAY fans.

  39. LittleDeadGirl says:

Meh, I am a fan of a few of her songs but this one was stupid and boring and the addition of the “bluesy” tone just makes it worst. I’m a fan of certain types of country music and this just feels too … I dunno … cheap.

  40. Dizzybenny says:

Sounds to me like the same audio track but added the guitar and harmonica.
    So a big MEH!

  41. Beatrix says:

    So talented. So pretentious.

I don’t know what genre to put that under, but it ain’t country, BABY.

Katy Perry did a country version of Firework, and minus her voice, it was quite beautiful.

And I wanna say as a gay person, I would accept that as my anthem before BTW.

  42. Jonzin says:

After the comment about plagiarizing a Korean music group, went and found this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpXJJ71OxAA

They sound too similar. Considering the version by the Korean girls came out almost a year earlier….

  43. Newbie says:

I wish somebody would just put her in her place so that we could all move on from the trainwreck that she is.

  44. Hakura says:

@Flutters“The remix is MUCH better than the original but like people are saying, it’s not country. It’s more like a rock power ballad.

ITA. I was trying to figure out how to describe it, & it really sounds like some of the songs ‘Kid Rock’ puts out trying to mix ‘hard rock’ with instruments used in ‘country’ music. Though his music is a bit better received by the country music community than Lady Gaga.
    —————-
I grew up listening to ‘Garth Brooks’ (& all kinds of Reba McIntyre) with my mom & 2 aunts growing up, so I agree that this isn’t real ‘country’, so much as a catchy mix of genres. Way less annoying than the original, at least.

  45. Michelle says:

    @asd
    “Don’t be a rainbow be a flag
Don’t drink tea just lick the bag.”

    Hilarious! Thank you for that.

I think this version is just as awful.

  46. bored says:

    love love love her..

  47. Motor35 says:

the country music radio station i work for, will not be putting this song in rotation. true country music fans will not appreciate this as lady gaga fans *might*
