Would anybody be so kind to explain the pumpkin patch thing to me? Sorry for being a very uninformed European, have seen those pictures often, but what exactly is going on there? Just lots of pumpkins, and people choose the ones they want for their home?
I very boringly bought one pumpkin in supermarket, and am going to work on it today with the kids.

It is a tradition to some here in the US to visit a pumpkin patch in anticipation of Halloween.
There are usually activities for the kids, hayrides, bobbing for apples, baby animals to pet, face painting, cider, etc.
Here in the Midwest, they usually have the pumpkin patch visit as a school field trip.
The kids love it

Marcia Cross’s ginger girls are so friggin’ cute.
@Daisy, Yep. Here in the South, there’s a grand tradition, not of school trips to the pumpkin patch, but of bringing all of those activities (and many more) to some sort of Fall Festival/Octoberfest/Halloween thing. There’s beer, kids’ stuff, bake sales, fundraising, haunted houses, etc.
Also, around this time of year, network television starts putting the Peanuts specials into heavy rotation. I heart Charlie Brown.

This doesn’t look like a traditional pumpkin patch. It looks like they just hauled some pumpkins in from a field and made them look all pretty so people can shop.
Where I live, when you go to a pumpkin patch, you actually go out in the field where the pumpkins were grown and pick out your pumpkin. We have hayrides, corn mazes, apple cider etc. as well. I love Halloween!

Thanks guys – really interesting. Sounds like a lot of fun.
We have just finished our pumpkin, and it’s out on the porch waiting for it to get dark.

Kaiser, you’re right, forgot about the Haunted Houses. Love Charlie B too
ER; Corn mazes, forgot that too, crap I’m slipping.
We also “Boo” our neighbors. You can pick up the kit at Hallmark stores. Fill a bag with candy, leave it on their porch ring the doorbell and run!
They then have to do the same to another neighbor, and so on. It’s a blast, but I have lost my footing running in the dark.

@Reasons- pumpkin patches (where we live at least) have massive markups so we just decided to get them at a store instead and thus be able to buy more. The patch is more fun and more of an event and better photo op, sure. We went there to pose and then get some dinky cheap gourds haha. Then off to the massive Walmart to get cheap pumpkins. We have it down to a science now.

Our family loves the Pumpkin Patch. It is a great opportunity for a a regular family to get great photos to send to family members and it has gotten to be a tradition for us. I do have to admit, I enjoy it as much as the kids!

I’d love to go pick a pumpkin from a field but here in LA you gotta take what you can get. We have no kids so we take the dog to the pumpkin patch. The mark up is huge so if you go to one that is sponsored by a group that is working for charity you can use it as a write off
