Freida Pinto shows off some skin for Glamour Mag: trashy or cute?

frieda1

Freida Pinto is one of the cover girls for the May issue of Glamour Magazine. Freida is promoting Miral, where she plays a Palestinian girl caught up in the second intifada, I believe. As I’ve mentioned before, I like Freida a lot, and I think she’s beautiful and talented. But I find myself only wanting to see her in more conservative clothes, and I hate how she’s been styled in some of her recent photo shoots. Last year, she did a shoot with GQ where they literally poured baby oil on her and tried to style her to look like Padma Lakshmi (for shame). And now this Glamour shoot, where they’re trying to make her look like… I don’t know, Britney Spears? Is it so wrong that I want her in conservative clothes and just styled to look beautiful?

Anyway, here are some excerpts from Freida’s interview:

On ethnicity:
“I think people are starting to become more color-blind in the industry. Of course, my Indian-ness cannot be ignored. At the same time, if I am being considered for a romantic comedy, I would like if [the script] didn’t try to inject as much ethnicity into the story as possible.”

On getting support from Dev while filming in Tunisia:
“There was a civil war going on. People were burning down shops and malls; there was killing and bloodshed. I was stuck in this massive hotel with 354 rooms and only six guests. The lights kept shutting down, and there was a 5:00pm curfew. But I wasn’t there by myself: Dev came down to see me. I was so glad I had company.”

On setting rules to minimize time apart from him:
“We recently realized we need a rule like that, because every time we think we’re going to be together, something work-related comes up. But we can’t put our careers on hold for this. We’re not at the stage where we have the privilege to turn things down. So we’ll say, “You have two days off? Let’s find a way to meet up.” I think you can always make it work if you want to.”

On Hollywood, and temptations:
“When a doctor is performing an operation, his mind cannot be somewhere else. And it’s the same with actors. You have to commit yourself mind, body and soul to a project in order to do justice to it. And temptations are rife in this industry, which is why I think it’s important to know yourself before you try to deal with a relationship.”

[From Glamour]

I’m kind of surprised that Freida and Dev Patel are still together. I thought she would have upgraded to some other actor by now – after all, she dumped her fiancé for Dev when she needed Dev for an entrance into Hollywood. Hey, I’m not judging. Freida has done very well for herself, and she’s an ambitious girl. An upgrade is in her future.

This IS conservative by most standards…nothing is falling out. She looks great, imo.

  2. teehee says:

I wish 90% of the women would stay clothed and not all fall into the same marketing trips- they all look the same, do the same thing, try to out-trash each otehr– that has nothing to do with sex appeal. Sexual appeal comes from within- you could be dressed as a nun and still show off your attractiveness. But I guess if 90% of them dont have that inner radiance, then they can just take the cheap way out by posing in their underwear, tugging at their shirt, posing wet, and so on– YAWN

  3. Marjalane says:

I hate shots like the one on the cover; It’s so posed, with the mouth open, trying to convey some kind of Lolita look. Either go for the smut, or smile- with an actual happy smile. Glamour has really gone in for the Cosmo effect recently.

  4. Rita says:

Well, Mother Superior Kaiser, in this day and age I don’t see how a lovely two-piece could get more conservative but good for you for standing up to the bare chested bra burners of the world.

Also On the cover: “Your Ultimate Guide to His Guy Parts”

If you need directions, don’t go there.

  5. The_Porscha says:

I think she has to do this in order to “break through” in America. She’s still not really a “known” name and her notoriety has all but disappeared after “Slumdog Millionaire” and its hype went away (among most audiences, not all).

I think if you asked the average male reader of a magazine like GQ, they’d have no idea who you were talking about if you mentioned Freida Pinto. Yes, her styling IS really unfortunate and unoriginal, but it’s not altogether up to her and every choice she makes seems to be one that she thinks will make her more of a household name… this being one of them. I’m sure there’ll be plenty of other sexy photo shoots in her future because she wants to be a “name.” I’m kind of meh on it. I do think she’s beautiful and looks better a little bit covered up, but it’s not like those are the shoots that are common or sell.

  6. Enny says:

I don’t really have a problem with the amount of skin, but I just wish they’d bothered to find her clothes that fit properly.

  7. Stephy2585 says:

Anything floral is automatically hard for me to see as ‘trashy’ buut between this and the previous oiled up photo shoot, I have to think this girl is really trying to sex up her image.

  8. Embee says:

I agree Marjalane. Remember Christy Brinkley? I loved how she posed with that warm smile. Stunning.

  9. your momma says:

    what teehee said

  10. Jackson says:

Eh, I don’t really like the look but it’s not what I’d call trashy, either. I do think she looks awfully pale though and those colors don’t look that great on her. She is still quite beautiful. Didn’t know about that whole ‘trading up’ thing. Hmm.

  11. Reality says:

I was expecting something far less conservative from the headline used.

And “she dumped her fiancé for Dev when she needed Dev for an entrance into Hollywood”? God, what a depressing idea! I hope she’s nowhere near as ruthless and jaded.

  12. Kaiser says:

I think I’m just used to seeing Indian women more covered up, so to see an Indian girl with so much skin showing is somehow off-putting for me.

  13. Jenna says:

LOL Kaiser, have you not watched any Bollywood movies in the last 10 years? They all walk around in bikinis now, ain’t no big deal.

And I love the cover, it’s so springy.

  14. NayNay says:

I think she looks gorgeous with just the right amount of skin showing.

  15. Solveig says:

Someone should say Glamour’s photographers, editors and publishers to get back to the future. This cover is so ’80s!
She’s a pretty girl, I really hope she’ll get good roles in HW, not just the “exotic” ones.

  16. MikeyAngel says:

I don’t think she looks trashy, just 80’s, which isn’t a good look in my opinion. She is beautiful though, that is for sure, and I really like her and Dev together.

  17. Maritza says:

I see nothing sexy about it, the photo looks like the cover of Seventeen. She is cute, I hope she doesn’t get large boobs like everyone else.

  18. Sally says:

Not trashy, but I HATE that bikini on the cover. Horrendous.

  19. Ja says:

Hideous outfit but a beautiful woman. Refreshingly decent among the trash that’s out there every moment of every day.

  20. S says:

She is SO beautiful. And I am SO envious!

  21. really says:

she is just truly beautiful! the cover wardrobe does not suit her best, altho she still looks pretty. PLUS SHE CAN ACT, which is alot to ask for of Hollywood these days in her age bracket… she slams!

  22. LadyBert62 says:

I agree that this look is fairly conservative by the trashy look so prevalent nowadays. However, I do not think she is all that pretty. She has a wholesome look which is nice.

  23. Yasmine says:

Really??? They’ve put an Indian actress to play a Palestinian woman? I don’t get it, does Hollywood just lump ‘brown’ people together? So damn offensive! And know what else is offensive? That styling. She looks like an ad for a margarita cocktail in the spring. She can do so much better.

  24. GeekChic says:

I can kind of see what you mean, Kaiser. She is such a pretty girl and very talented and she’s kind of like Reese Witherspoon — she doesn’t need to be sexed up. Just put her in nice clothes and have her smile and that’s enough. Although, as others have said, these photos are pretty conservative by today’s standards.

One thing, though: I don’t think she “traded up” with Dev to get into Hollywood. I got the impression that she was in a relationship that she didn’t choose, and that her success afforded her the freedom to get out of it and be with someone she loved. Dev is certainly cute and talented, but he’s hardly Hollywood royalty. I’m normally as skeptical and cynical as the next guy, but for whatever reason I tend to believe that she loves him. Maybe it’s because she’s so pretty and I don’t want her to be a bitch, lol (kind of like Amy Adams — how sad would you be to find out she was a raging bitch?).

  25. Lindsay says:

“Really??? They’ve put an Indian actress to play a Palestinian woman? I don’t get it, does Hollywood just lump ‘brown’ people together? So damn offensive! And know what else is offensive? That styling. She looks like an ad for a margarita cocktail in the spring. She can do so much better.”

Offensive? Damn dude, that is a silly thing to get uppity about. That’s implying much malice here and it’s just a casting decision to capitalize on her popularity.

Also, The bright colors look beautiful against her skin. I’m a ghost and think it’s pretty cool she is able to pull this off, I certainly could not with my pale ass. She looks, I dunno, sweet. The cover has a 1960’s beachy vibe. I like.

  26. Yasmine says:

@Coffee talk: please try not to be patronizing when you reply. Here’s my two cents: acting in theatre is one thing. In a movie, realism is attempted. And as person from that region with Palestinian family, I can assure you the stereo-typical women from the Levant (I’ll even lump in Syria and Lebanon for pete’s sake) DO NOT look Indian. If they chose a Pakistani or Bengali woman to play an Indian, I would get it. You can homogenize the skin colour there to a certain extent. But from Palestine??? Not even close. And I think that you may not understand how offensive that is because maybe you are not racialized or a person of colour. Maybe, I really don’t know. But as someone who is visibly racialized myself, I see white privilege a lot, and find it offensive when ‘brown’ people, whatever that even means, are lumped together into one ‘other’ group. Basically there is no concern for diversity in these ‘other’ groups. At least pick a woman from the wider region if you want it to be realistic, not from a whole other one!

@Lindsay: structural racism, to which Hollywood is not immune, is the problem I’m pointing out here. Not personal malice from a single person/exec. And it’s not “uppity” considering the experiences I have personally had with racial stereo-typing. So please be sensitive to that and respectful of it and by extension others who have experienced it.

  27. sandy says:

well….I’m just going to say, she looks beautiful? and leave it at that. btw.. point well taken.

  28. beth says:

hahahha how is this trashy… even for an Indian girl standard?
have you guys even seen the Indian sarees? esp. the ones worn by the leading actresses in bollywood movies? ive never seen anything that leaves so much and so little to the imagination at the same time.

  29. Eve says:

    @ Yasmine:

I can see your point and I agree with it to some extent — for instance, I really don’t mind seeing other Latin Americans playing Brazilians in movies because considering our enormous variety of ethnicities I can pretty much buy anyone playing one of us. But one thing that bothers me a lot, because I do find disrespectful, is when they choose actors from a Spanish-speaking country and they end up speaking Brazilian Portuguese with a very distinctive Spanish accent. In The Incredible Hulk (2008) this was so serious that they had some of the dialogues voiced over because the actors’s (mostly Salvadorians, I think) accent made them difficult to understand. I saw some of the unchanged scenes and I can honestly tell you it was distracting, to say the least.

Having said that, it seems to me Freida Pinto (who I don’t like, by the way) may have been chosen simply because she resembles Rula Jebreal herself (although I think Jebreal is more beautiful):

  30. Mika says:

Why can’t SHE be the face of Channel?? She has 10x the class of Boobs Leggly.

  31. Mare says:

“I thought she would have upgraded to some other actor by now – after all, she dumped her fiancé for Dev when she needed Dev for an entrance into Hollywood.”
This is very very rude. You don’t know her or anything about her relationship with her ex fiancé or why they broke up or why she’s with this guy now.

  32. gee says:

Mika: SPOT ON. She would be perfect for Chanel. Not in this outfit, but still.

  33. Jeri says:

It’s a Sandra Dee/Gidgit outfit – nothing wrong with it.

  34. weetiger3 says:

I agree, I foresee her making an upgrade at some point. Unfortunately, I have visions of her upgrading with our mutual boyfriend. She’s soooo his type. (What? It came to me in a vision!)

  35. Katie says:

The outfits look sort of teeny-bopper or something to me. Not cute. She is beautiful and doesn’t need that to be attention-grabbing.

  36. dahlia1947 says:

It’s a cute look! This cannot be considered trashy at all!

  37. LittleDeadGirl says:

It’s somehow both too revealing and unsexy for me and it’s not pretty. There is nothing right about the stylying and I agree with Kaiser. I’d love to see her in something else, it doesn’t have to be conservative, but just something that seems more with her style.

  38. AliasLBW says:

“I’m kind of surprised that Freida and Dev Patel are still together. Freida has done very well for herself, and she’s an ambitious girl. An upgrade is in her future.”

Yes you are most certainly judging Freida. And it is laughable that you say she’s using Dev for an entrance into Hollywood. They both made their entrances into Hollywood at the same time promoting Slumdog Millionaire!! Dev is not quite as in demand as Freida is, as a recent article in USA Today mentions. A post here on this site highlights this where Dev called out Hollywood for the stereotypical roles Asian males like him are offered. I don’t know, to me there seems to be something really special about these two. When Freida talks to USA Today about her relationship with Dev, she says “You never know what the future holds for you. And when you have something so beautiful, you don’t want to lose it.” From that I get the impression that Freida is totally, head over heels in love with Dev. If there is going to be an upgrade to anything….it will be wedding rings for these two!

  39. ordinarygirl86 says:

The styling of this photo shoot looks so cheap and tacky! Who the fuck chose those outfits for her? They should be fired! Freida’s skin was made for JEWEL TONES!!!!

  40. vegemite says:

Freida is gorgeous and I hope she trades up from Dev.Her ex doesnt have my sympathy because he whinged to the press like a cry baby.

  41. AliasLBW says:

For those calling for Freida to upgrade from Dev… She’s an Indian…a member of a community that values long term relationships….Not some flighty Hollywood chick that moves from man to man every other month! Maybe some can’t stand the fact that a (geek) guy like Dev gets to tuck Freida into bed every now and then with nary a complaint from her! In fact it looks like she wants to be with him a lot more!!! Dev has to be laying down his pipe quite well that Freida can’t get enough of him! How sad, shallow and rude that Dev’s looks are the main reason many seek an upgrade for Freida.
