‘The Hangover 2’ trailer: is this just the exact same plot as the first one?

poster1

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have a little giggle over the new, full-length trailer for The Hangover 2. It does look funny… in a very familiar way. It’s looking like they used the same exact plot device in this film as they used in the first one – celebratory toast, followed by a flash-forward one day later as they are “hungover” and trying to figure out what they did while they were under the influence. It worked really well in first film – so why not use THE EXACT SAME plot device in the second?

The baby in the first film becomes the monkey in this one. And instead of Justin Bartha being missing, you have Ed Helms’ soon-to-be brother-in-law. Poor Justin Bartha – it doesn’t look like he’s got a significant part in this one either. If I see this movie at all, it will be for Ed Helms. I love him! I hope they gave him an interesting story line in this movie.

Oh, and is anyone feeling the Asian stereotypes? No one? Ugh.

Lol! I’m looking forward to seeing this movie. Oh and how adorable is the elderly man in a wheelchair!

  2. lisa says:

(different from the above lisa.. I may need a new name..lol)

Anyway. I didn’t see the first in the theater.. Rented. And actually liked it a great deal. After seeing the trailer I thought it was funny, but was a bit disappointed that it was the exact same plot. The same gags just in a different location.

but most sequels suffer from that premise. It will do good at the BO.

it seems audiences don’t care much about being original. that is why we get the same meals served on different plates.

  3. Celebitchy says:

I can’t help it, this made me laugh but I agree with you Kaiser, it’s the same plot. They could have mixed it up a little.

  4. The_Porscha says:

Yeah, it’s pretty much a carbon copy… but still looks funny, so I’ll definitely be seeing it.

  5. Brittney says:

I love this cast too much to criticize the parallels to the first film. Maybe they’re of the mentality that if something’s not broke, they shouldn’t fix it? I expected a lot of similarities, but I’m still hoping the differences — Bangkok vs. Vegas, a monkey vs. a baby, new cast members — will outshine the original. Even if they don’t, it’ll still be damn funny.

  6. KY says:

    Omg I can’t wait!

  7. EdithP says:

Yeah, it made me laugh, too. Poor Ed Helms!

  8. dannyexplosion says:

It better be just like the first one. I mean EXACTly like it

  9. Isabel says:

It’s a sequel. The Hangover was such a success the first time…and a lot of that was because of the formula that they used, as well as how brilliantly the actors played into it. If they deviated too much, we’d all be wondering why they felt the need to get all creative and mess with a good thing.

Anyway, awesome! Same hilarious plot, different location. It’s called “the Hangover 2″…the formula is pretty much written by the title, no?

  10. kelbear says:

I can’t wait!!! I am so excited! These guys are great together but I wish Justin Bartha had a bigger part in this one.

  11. lola says:

I’m the shallow tool who LOVES that this is the same thing on a riff.

  12. sorrento says:

That bunch of guys can make any movie funny, but seriously, the same plot? I’m in.

  13. Deeta says:

    Asian stereotypes?

  14. kiko says:

to be honest i didn’t really like the first(too much las vegas stereotypes and lame cheesy jokes) but hopefully this one will be better…damn that monkey is freaking hilarious!!and the tattoo is insane!lol

  15. Samigirl says:

I totally lol’ed at the trailer. Idc if it is the same plot. I still laugh hysterically at the first one, and I’m sure I will see this a couple of times in theatres 🙂

  16. I don’t know… same plot? again?.. but it did work better than well the first time

  17. Marianne says:

I think I will still see it…but it basically has the same plot line. Stu has done something drastic and painful to his looks (missing tooth, tattoo on face), the monkey replaces the baby, they are searching for a missing (and important) member of the wedding party. Justin Bartha (apparently) not a part of this adventure, searching their pockets for clues…..I was hoping for something a little more new or fresh…but who knows.

  18. the original bellaluna says:

What Kaiser? No mention of Liam Neeson’s cameo in Hangover 2? I’ll forgive you once HGF is posted! 😉

And they could have used more Justin Bartha. I’ll see it, but not in a theatre.

  19. Feebee says:

What’s there to change? Guys get drunk, try to remember what happened… Hilarity ensues. They could make 10 movies like this.

That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t change it. $$ will ultimately decide if it was a good idea.

  20. Katie says:

I’m not going to lie, even though sequels often and even though it looks like it rips off its own original, I’m totally going to see this. Especially after being pleasantly surprised by Limitless, I’m all about anything Bradley Cooper.

  21. nikki says:

I’ll see anything with Zack Galifianakis and Mr.Chang

  22. Amanda G says:

The Hangover was hilarious and probably one of the best comedies in years! The sequel won’t be as good, but I’ll still see it.

  23. krys says:

if the first one was great the second one should be, thast why is called the hangover 2 lol

  24. Louise says:

I agree that it looks like the first movie. But with a movie about a hangover, there’s not a whole lot that can be different. It’s weird that it doesn’t look like Justin Bartha is in the film much. I guess they didn’t want to screw with the chemistry that the other three had.

  25. Ruby says:

I can’t wait to see this. The first movie was hilarious. Generally I am a skeptic when it comes to sequels but the fact it’s based in Bangkok cracks me up. Those who have been there will know what I am talking about ( lady boys, sex shows, fake merchandise etc…) lol

  26. June says:

I don’t see how you get around the same plot in a movie called Hangover 2.

  27. just me says:

The hangover is one of my favorite movies ever. I would be thrilled to have 20 sequels EXACTLY the same as the original. So excited to see this.

  28. latam says:

the first one was awful, this one looks worse.

  29. Sassy says:

Love this cast and Ed Helms is da bomb. Love him! And Zach, too! Can.Not.Wait.!!!

  30. d says:

Anyone here who thinks the recycled plot will not be as funny or funnier than the original Hangover is GAY. You cant go wrong with this cast in the new environment.

    Ed Helms and a monkey……Hilarious

  31. d says:

Sassy, would you like to go watch HO2 together, my treat

  33. Venefica Delirium says:

The first one was about as funny as radiation poisoning. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any more overrated.
