John McCain to go on David Letterman after high profile snub

David Letterman was beyond pissed off at John McCain for canceling his plans to be on the show at the last minute in late September, leaving Letterman scrambling to fill time. McCain personally called the talkshow host and said that he needed to fly off to Washington and couldn’t appear because “the economy is about to crater” and he needed to take care of it immediately. Letterman initially understood, but when he busted John McCain doing an interview with Katie Couric at the same time he was supposed to be appearing on his show, he was fuming.

To add insult to injury, Letterman noted the next night on his show that McCain didn’t leave NY until the next morning after he canceled. Letterman said that McCain told him in his phone call that “I think people would rather see Sarah Palin, and maybe I’ll send her for you next time.” Letterman made it clear that McCain had insulted him and he wasn’t sure that he would even give the presidential candidate another chance. He said:

“One, suggesting there will be a next time, and I’m not sure that decision is his, and two, that maybe if there is he would bring Sarah Palin and she will come in his place… We’ll just wait and see, is he a man of his word or not?”

It looks like McCain is sort-of a man of his word. He’s agreed to appear on David Letterman this Thursday. I’m surprised that Letterman is even open to it:

After canceling an appearance last month and causing some bruised feelings on David Letterman’s part, McCain is coming back to the Late Show this Thursday, Oct. 16, to face the music, courtesy of Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra.

Considering McCain has appeared on the show 12 times (including the appearance shown above), it’s probably safe to assume the senator and the talk show host will make amends. But there’s always the chance the chat could turn hostile, which would be great for ratings.

McCain is not doing too well in the polls, courtesy of that “cratering” economy he mentioned. It may be too little too late for him, but he could ingratiate himself to David Letterman again. The guy had a feud going for 16 years with Oprah, although it was largely thought to be Oprah’s problem for taking offense to Letterman’s 1995 Oscars joke “Uma – Oprah, Oprah – Uma.” That seems pretty tame in comparison to a lot of things you could say about Oprah.

    Dave’s an ass

Dave’s a showman. I’m sure he was genuinely offended by the original snub but I doubt he’s going to miss an opportunity to wind up McCain about it. It’s all entertainment and in this case, viewing figs. gold.

  3. Syko says:

I wouldn’t give the old bastard another chance. But it might be entertaining, if Dave’s still ticked off.

  4. Feebee says:

Dave should have him on and then do a Jimmy Kimmel on Matt Damon.

  5. Jinxy says:

McCain has to go on because Dave’s been so unbelievably brutal with the truth about what a lying sack of crap McCain is, Dave made him look like an old fool – which he is. I feel for Dave having to listen to his self serving lies, but he’ll get the opportunity to bitch slap him in person. This might be TIVO worthy.

two go in, one come out!

McCain is so wishy-washy. Do we want a president like that? Back track after you put your foot in your mouth. Letterman was trying to give the old bastard a platform so that the American people could see the other side of him but I guess McPain couldnt see that. He needs to hire a better campaign manager.

  8. Kaiser says:

You break your word to David Letterman, you’ll break your word to the American people.

I hope Dave rips him a new one.

  9. Lara says:

McCain told Dave that the reason for not coming on the show was b/c doing a humorous show would not be appropriate for the circumstances regarding the economy. Hence, the Katie Couric interview wasn’t a dis; it was appropriate for the crisis. Dave needs to chill.

  10. Kaiser says:

No, Lara. The excuse about not wanting to do a comedy show came the day after, when all hell broke loose. McCain’s excuse the night of was that he had to fly to Washington and save the day. McCain lied to Dave. Dave has every right to be pissed.

  11. Erin says:

McCain did not tell Dave that it would be inappropriate to do a humorous show – that’s what his mouthpiece said the next morning when the clips of Letterman roasting him were playing – basically admitting that he lied. Letterman’s spokesperson shot back that he went on Conan the day the levees breached in New Orleans. I think anyone would be genuinely offended when someone outright lies to you, but at this point, it’s about the ratings. And you know Letterman will give him hell.

Besides, we can’t all stop living and laughing and go into mourning just because everything we ever worked for and saved for is going into some CEO’s pocket and probably off to some tropical island. McCain’s a bumbling old fool. This crisis has been a long time coming (8 years) and some big dramatic rescue attempt by him (who never opened his mouth at the meeting) isn’t going to save us now. We’re screwed.

    Team Obama!

Meanwhile, the stock market ended today with another record gain. 😛

    It’s up 936.42 right now 😉
It’s been longer than 8 years, even Clinton agrees with that analogy.

  17. stellapurdy says:

Definitely tuning in for this interview. I’m guessing Dave will be respectful to a point but let McCain have it too. It would have been one thing to cancel and actually do what you said you were going to do. It’s something entirely different to cancel and then lie about what your plans are.

We know by now that all politicians lie, McCain’s just not very good at it. Or maybe it’s the arrogance….

  18. Randy says:

It would be cool if Dave saved him for the last guest and then bumped him for a talking dog or something stupid.

  19. Jeanne says:

BFD. With McCain it’s always too little too late. He shouldn’t have cancelled in the first place to go and visit with Katie the Chipmunk. Or at least went on Letterman a couple days later.
