Ashley Judd’s makeup malfunction: simple mistake, or hilarious disaster?

ashley_judd_book_10_wenn5633733

These are some new photos of Ashley Judd promoting her book yesterday in New York. As you can see, Ashley’s makeup is all kinds of wrong. Bad makeup situations and not blending is something I excuse in younger ladies, young women who don’t know the basics of makeup application, and perhaps don’t have the best makeup artists on call. But Ashley Judd is an old hand at this junk, the red carpets, being photographed, etc. Surely she would have noticed the makeup disaster? Surely someone would have told her, right? But I’m guessing everybody there was too afraid to say anything.

CB covered parts of the Ashley Judd story here and here. I’m not going to cover my take on this situation because CB says I’m too negative and I’ll alienate people. I suppose that as a group, we’re not all going to come to an agreement on this, and maybe we should applaud Ashley for making us discuss real issues instead of, like, fashion or who is boning what. Ashley too is bewildered by the controversial reactions to her book. I know this because despite Ashley’s best efforts to remain “abstinent” from the press, she’s has given many, many interviews to promote her book. She tells E! News that the response to the book has “been a little bewildering to me… My poor mother, who’s incredibly witty and so quick with a quip, she’s probably regretting she said ‘We put the fun in dysfunctional.’” She also blames the media: “They put disproportionate emphasis on the fact that we had a family system that didn’t work very well and the kinds of the things that happen in those family systems happen to all of us.” You can read more here.

On a more superficial note, CB and I (and all of you) have been debating about what Ashley has done to her face. Some of you think it’s a full facelift, but CB and I are thinking it’s fillers. In these photos especially, her cheeks looks super-jacked.

It’s that high-definition makeup. It’s happened to a few other celebs since it came out. What I don’t understand is why makeup artists haven’t realized that shit shows up like cake flour in digital high-res photos. In person, you wouldn’t have noticed it at ALL.

Well Naomi and Wynonna appeared on the View today and seemed to support her for coming forward. Both of them said they had sexual abuse in their childhood. I believe Ashley is telling the truth. I still don’t really like her but I do believe her.

My theory is that the makeup is only visible with the bright flash bulbs and doesn’t look as bad in person right?

I don’t care what anyone says, that HD ‘transparent’ powder is WHITE – as this *clearly* shows. You can’t use it the way people think to catch eye makeup UNLESS you completely remove it after! Ugh!

Wynonna is the only Judd that doesn’t make me want to slap her until her cheeks bleed.

Ashley is at least the 3rd celeb this has happened to and been majorly reported, Nicole Kidman was the first I remember and I forget who else.

The first time I saw this make up mistake was on Nicole Kidman who is “older” than Ashley even if it’s only months so no, it it not a “younger woman’s” mistake. It’s a make up artist’s mistake. It may be HD make up like @Anastasia said. If it is, how does it work? Should it look like that on normal film/low fi cameras/the naked eye or should it be more blended? My skin looks hideous with some of the newer digital cameras. so I need to know.

Her face is a lot less jacked up than I expected. Especially, since I read that blind item that everyone guessed was about Ashley. She looks better than Nicole and Renee – although thankfully, Renee’s filler orgy is finally wearing off.

I’d be more concerned that that dress made her look a lot fatter than she does in these photos when she was on film and that the 40s hair is ageing.

@kelbear that photo on the cover is from when she was in her 30s.

This disaster is the result of using Make Up Forever’s HD microfinishing powder.

    Check this video evidence
    http://www.youtube.com/user/gossmakeupartist#p/u/57/fM4foAf1tHc

Although I read somewhere in comments that this effect only appears if you use it in certain way and it’s not blended properly. And when you photographed with flash this happens.

It’s high def finishing makeup. It reflects the light back and hides lines and wrinkles, but unfortunately, in bright flash photography and high res stills, it actually reflects too much and shows EXACTLY where it is on the face. I was on a set where the makeup artists were using it and it actually strobed. This has recently happened to Nicole Kidman and Uma Thurman as well.

In person, the skin looks great. Even in lower light photography the skin looks nice. It’s just the high powered flashes that kill the effect.

  37. Ron says:

It’s the powder and also a blending issue. It’s like when drag queens lighten their eyes, it needs time to “cook”. The hd powder refelects flash lighting too. Botox and fillers. I know many who use them and while they may eventually settle and (usually) look good, it’s not uncommon to look absolutely ridiculous for the first few months. It’s not obvious to the naked eye at all. To the naked eye, she probably looked refreshed and great. I’m NO fan at all of Ashley Judd (her behavior on set just grates) but her makeup artist screwed up and it’s unfortunate. Unles she did her own makeup, in which case, she probably had no idea.

Hi-def makeup? What is that? If it’s anything like tv, doesn’t it highlight facial weirdness?

I say fillers and the bo-bo. The effect is called pillow face and it’s meant to mimic the fattiness of face that you have when you’re younger. I don’t even know why people do it, it’s never convincing. Young women’s don’t have big fat deposits right under their eyes, the middle of their forheads or around the mounth only. It makes them look like imprudently-stuffed puppets.

Haha, it’s that makeup that shows up white or pink in those HD camera shots. Nicole Kidman had the same happen to her at the Grammys or Oscars or something like that. The makeup doesn’t look like that in daytime or regular lighting, but those HD cameras really pick it up especially with the flash because the makeup cover reflects the light. Collossal failure to the makeupa artist for not telling Ashley what would happen if she went to a camera lightbulb flashing event.

I don’t get face fillers. They always just look like some weird bloat or swelling, never like natural fullness. Besides, when I gain weight in my face it makes me look decidedly older/more mature and surely I can’t be the only person this happens to. Look at Heidi Montag how much older she looked with all those fillers. So idk why they think fuller face automatically = looks younger.

Unfortunantly that really looks like fillers on Ash since she doesn’t seem to have gained elsewhere yet has that weird face bloat thing going on. The white stuff is that shimmery highlighing powder to make the eye area look smoother – she just needs to blend better.

Every time I hear her, I want to scream “Ashley, honey, you are not the only one who went to college! Ashley, you poor misguided soul, I have a Masters in Communication and sound like the fluffy suburban California girl that I always was. There’s no shame in rocking the roots!”

Oh and one more piece of advice to Ashley – gaining weight and using cheek filler on top of it (why? how old can she look?) makes your face look fat like you weigh 250 fat vs. you gained 15lbs soft.

  87. REALIST says:

BTW, all that AA speak from the “Today” interview (previously)-Ashley does have a Master’s in Social Work, so I was disappointed to see her revert to the AA way. With AA there is all this emphasis on a “higher power”, and little emphasis on the kind of clinical knowledge that social workers have and other counselors (who are quite scarce in AA, I might mention) should have. Also, the God-speak is so inappropriate if she is working with people from different cultures and religions.
I agree with Thruthzbetta-she is a poor, crazy thing, and unlike Kaiser’s view that she was arrogant and superior on the Today show, I think the language she uses is just a self defense mechanism to protect her from all the vicious and snarky of the world.
Yes, she is on a book tour, just like Elizabeth Edwards was on a book tour about 9 months before she died of breast cancer. Elizabeth had some legitimate things to say (and likely wanted to rip John a new one before she died); Ashley has some legitimate things to say, although she will have to put up with swimming through sharks to say it just as Elizabeth, who was dying, did.
Drug addicts-not my concern-but I am amazed how people who are known to have diagnosed mental illness are still ripped to shreds on this site. With a few exceptions, no compassion is shown to their condition whatsoever.
C/B isn’t escapism-for me, it’s something to escape from. I took a break and came back, and confirmed that my time is better spent elsewhere. I guess that makes me “arrogant”, too, but I have my own mental illness to contend with and need to steer clear as much as possible of the world I know is out there.
I feel no shame in being “crazy”, as long as the person who says it shows compassion and a willingness to provide help and support.
Look in the mirror or close by to a family member or friend, and you are likely to find someone in need of the same kind of compassion and support.

Just for clarification, I want to say that I am addressing Ashley’s severe bout of depression she came forward with a few years ago. I haven’t read the book yet, but I believe her approach to AA was as an adult child and as someone who has either had drinking issues at sometime in her life or was concerned that her exposure to the alcoholism of others was the reason she was so depressed.
Been there, done that. Alcoholic mother, alcoholic stepfather. I was recently diagnosed as bipolar-II and am trying to wrestle down a Master’s degree myself. I give Ashley credit for trying so hard to do the right thing-I know what that feels like.
CORRECTION: Ashley’s Master’s was in Public Administration from Harvard (!). I have a BS Pharmacy undergrad, and I’m still not sure what that is. Probably in the realm of “Human Resources”-ambiguity at its best. Despite the gaffe, I stand by what I say above.
I did check Wikipedia for her degree info, so the mistake as to her exact degree may actually be theirs, not mine.
Sooo, Realist has stepped off her soapbox-look for my book in about five years or so.

“I feel no shame in being “crazy”, as long as the person who says it shows compassion and a willingness to provide help and support.”

Well said, Realist. I’m with you there.
