Ben Affleck in talks to play philanderer Tom Buchanan in ‘The Great Gatsby’

For months we’ve been hearing about the 3D reboot (FOR REAL) of The Great Gatsby, which is slated to be directed by Baz Luhrmann, of Moulin Rouge fame. Baz got his Romeo + Juliet buddy Leonardo DiCaprio slated to play Gatsby, and since then, everybody is auditioning or talking about auditioning for various roles. My favorite rumors were about Blake Lively “auditioning” for the part of Daisy Buchanan – all of the reports made it sound like Blake was willing to do anything for the part of Daisy, or for the part of Leo’s sexual partner. Anyway, that role ended up going to Carey Mulligan, an actress who can actually, you know, ACT. So now the focus is on who will get the other two major roles – that of Nick Carraway, the novel’s narrator, and Tom Buchanan, Daisy’s philandering husband (does that need a SPOILER?). While many think Tobey Maguire – an old friend of Leo’s – will end up as Nick, the latest rumor is… Ben Affleck as Tom! It’s kind of a great choice, right?

So we beat on, boats against the current… with Ben Affleck in a 3D big screen adaptation of what is perhaps the Great American Novel.

Deadline reports that Affleck is in talks to join the star studded, Baz Luhrmann-directed epic “The Great Gatsby,” negotiating to play the part of Tom Buchanan. Tom Buchanan is Daisy Buchanan’s philandering husband, a rich but emotionally shallow man.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Affleck and the film’s producers must work around a scheduling conflict; he’s slated to direct his next film, “Argo,” this fall, around the time Luhrmann intends on kicking off “Gatsby.”

If Affleck sign on, he’ll be joining a cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan. The film will shoot in Australia and be shot in 3D.

Affleck was last seen in the recession drama, “The Company Men,” about a man who loses his job but finds something bigger.

[From The Huffington Post]

I haven’t read the book in a decade, but from what I remember, this is really, really great casting. Tom is supposed to be a big, enthusiastic, old-money kind of douchebag and Ben could land that very convincingly, in my opinion. Plus, I’m sure he would be able to nail the philandering part too, right? Wouldn’t it have been funny if Blake Lively was still up for the role of Daisy? Oh, I can just see all of Jennifer Garner’s Dimple Parade photo ops now! But Garner won’t have anything to worry about from Carey Mulligan, I would think. But we’ll have to see who gets cast as Tom’s mistress, right?

I think he would make a great Tom Buchanan, even better than Bradley Cooper.

  2. Ell says:

I’m not keen on it being remade as I loved the original. But I do think Carey would make a good Daisy, not sure about Leo, RR will always be Jay to me.

  3. courtney says:

this remake is going to flop harder than the 1974 version did. Mr Aflack is a loser and not as good looking as the press makes him out to be

  4. tracking says:

    Smart. I like it.

  5. carrie says:

he was decent in “the town” & very watchable in “compagny men” so why not? but i think there is a trouble with Daisy if Mulligan acts her, gDaisy will be a crying character(Mulligan loves crying in the movies)

  6. anonymous says:

This is a role for Brad Pitt or George Clooney some how they seem to fit that role better than Ben Afleck, and not because they are friends, they seem to be a better fit for the role of the Great Gatsby, Afleck seem too low key.

  7. KLO says:

    I love the idea.

  8. TinaWithPom says:

Eh, I’ve always pictured Tom Hardy as perfect for the part of Daisy’s pretentious musclehead husband.

  9. devilgirl says:

I think Affleck would actually be a smart choice.

Totally disagree with Pitt or Clooney being right for the role.

  10. mia girl says:

I really like Affleck for this role.

  11. Lantana says:

If I would have heard this bf I saw The Town I would have thought meh. After seeing The Town, I think Affleck has enough range to play Buchanan, but I agree with courtney – FLOP.

  12. normades says:

Much better than Cooper. But please no carby faced Tobey as Nick.

  13. MrsOdie2 says:

I have taught this book for years. Frankly, it doesn’t make a good movie. Most movies that are the interior monologues of the main character (Nick) do not. That’s why you’ve never seen “Catcher in the Rye,” no matter how much people want to make it a good movie, it’s the NARRATIVE that makes it an excellent book, not the plot. The plot is sort of dull in The Great Gatsby. People sit around drinking and longing for stuff. Affleck is okay casting. A bit too pretty and refined in this English teacher’s opinion. And I don’t get why women love the character of Daisy. She was a shallow jerk.

  14. becky says:

not crazy about CM as Daisy (come on!) either, though better than Blake L, for sure
I know Leo and Toby are BFFs but he’d awful, awful in this role! i could get down with Ben though

  15. JustBored says:

I don’t care who they cast as stars. I finally got around to reading this book and I love it. I can’t wait for the movie.

  16. moss says:

    no he’s a lousy actor

  17. mmmm says:

    @justbored
the last thing i wanna do after i finish a good book is to see the movie of it. totally ruins it. (exception: clockwork orange)

  18. KattyKat says:

Ben Affleck = a technically hot guy who is not hot. He is quite good looking but he just seems so wooden and stiff to me (in a bad non-sexual way) that I get turned off, rather than on.

I would have preferred Bradley Cooper but I just like to look at Bradley Cooper.

I think Ben’s calling is as a director more than as an actor.

PS: Ben is better than Pitt. Anything but Pitt.

  19. serena says:

If Affleck sign on, he’ll be joining a cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan. – I CAN’T WAIT.
    The cast is excellent.

“Tom is supposed to be a big, enthusiastic, old-money kind of douchebag and Ben could land that very convincingly..” Yeah, Ben is a great choice for that role. LOL
But he’s so boring, at least his daughters are damn cute.

  20. cici says:

LOVE THE CASTING! i really hope ben plays tom.

  21. MNGIRL76 says:

I love Affleck for this role! He is perfect because he is a douche bag! Toby, perfect! Loving the cast so far. the original will always be the best, but if Hollywood has to…this isn’t to bad! IMO
@ Tina-Tom Hardy is good to!

  22. Zelda says:

I agree, this casting is great…but I’d prefer Tobey Maguire out of it… still, I’m really excited for this movie and I think Ben Affleck is a great casting choice. And it would be a great career move for him.

Also, I didn’t think they could find a Daisy that would work (not that they *couldn’t* just that they *wouldn’t*). Carey Mulligan is perfect, though.

@TinaWithPorn–Tom Hardy would be fantastic in this role. I’d like that even better.

@KattyKat–I’m thinking his jockish stiffness is exactly what would work well in the role.

Clooney and Pitt are just too old for the role, IMO

  23. Bodhi says:

I think that Bradly Cooper would make an awful Tom. There is something to modern about him. Ben might do a good job, but he might be to modern as well.

Does that make any sense? That they are too modern?

  24. Zelda says:

@Bodhi–yep. I doubt very much that Bradley Cooper could play in a period piece convincingly. And, I just think he’d play Tom smarmy for the sake of smarmy and that would be boring.

Also, ever since someone here pointed out that his eyes are lopsided, that is ALL I can see. And we don’t need that in 3-D.

  25. k says:

I love Carey, but Sienna Miller was made for this part. It would be so easy for her.

  26. JustBored says:

@mmmm…That’s true. Kinda like the way they ruined Pride and Prejudice for me. I still like to watch and make comparisons.

  27. nikki says:

This is the best casting ever!

  28. Zelda says:

    @k–
Ooh yes..Miller would have been better.
I’min the minority, but I like her–she is magnetic on screen.
Come to think of it, Mulligan seems too young, especially with this cast around her.

  29. becky says:

    @k
yeah i totally agree, always thought that

  30. Bodhi says:

@Zelda ~ Ok, cool, I’m glad that made sense to someone else! 🙂

  31. Madison says:

Affleck is great casting as Tom the cheating douchebag and if they cast Blake Lively to play Tom’s mistress it would be perfect.

  32. Nia says:

I don’t want this to be made into ANOTHER movie.

I actually flove the one with Paul Rudd as Nick Carroway…that was PERFECTION. Ben is a perfect Tom in real life but I don’t think he could pull of the acting without it being really affected.

When he tries to be natural he does come across as wooden as another commenter mentioned.

  33. Hautie says:

I am still stuck at the “3D” part.

Are we talking the “3D” that requires those dumbass glasses? Please tell me I have misunderstood. Cause I am baffled as of now.

But I do like Ben Affleck being consider for the role. I had really liked him in that movie he did about the murder of George Reeves/Superman.

He looks great in period movies. Where he is groomed within an inch of his life. The boy cleans up well.

  34. Cait says:

CM is a great actress, no doubt, but I just don’t see her as Daisy…Sienna Miller would’ve been a wayyy better choice. Say what you want about her personal life, but girl can act! I loved her in ‘Factory Girl’. CM is just too young and wholesome for the part.

  35. LolaBella says:

I think this is perfect casting. If you’ve seen Ben in Boiler Room you know he can convincingly play the part of a monied douchebag.

However, Tobey McGuire as Nick is HORRIBLE casting!!!

I like the suggestion of Paul Rudd as Nick.

  36. Newbie says:

@Hautie: cosign! Why would people want to watch this in 3D? There aren’t any explosions or car chases or special effects in this story. Oh. but Baz Luhrmann is directing, I see. He’s a bit… flamboyant, if you will. Perhaps there WILL be special effects…like the man-in-the-moon bursting into song or fairies singing about absinthe.

Love the idea of everyone rumored to be involved. Except Mulligan. Don’t get me wrong, she’s a terrific actress. But she doesn’t seem old enough to pull this off. And the character of daisy is a somewhat older, exceptionally beautiful woman. And while I’d watch Mulligan in any other shape or form, I don’t buy her as an exceptionally beautiful woman. On top of which, Daisy’s character starts out as amiable and charming, and by the end of the story, you learn she’s a cheap bitch. If I have to watch someone be deliciously bitchy, I prefer them to be exceptionally beautiful…aka…they refer to themselves as such and give themselves a pass because of it. It’s more believable, imho. A snotty, average-looking girl just makes you want to punch her in the face. You find yourself asking, “this is already annoying when exceptionally beautiful people are acting this way. what’s YOUR excuse?”

  37. June says:

    …does he have to?

  38. Sassy says:

What about the role of Daisy’s girlfriend, the golfer, who is part of the group? She is a well defined character.

  39. Amy says:

I read the book in high school and I didn’t see what was so great about it. Like Mrs. Odie said, rich spoiled people and their “tortured” lives. Nothing much really happens in the book… I doubt any movie would be that great unless they somehow changed the plot (for me at least).

  40. Chris says:

@MrsOdie2: Great point. The Outsider by Camus is another great book that wouldn’t be a very good movie for the reasons you mentioned.

  41. Ally says:

I think Tobey McGuire is the worst of the lot. Can you imagine his nasal voice narrating? Shudder.

And diCaprio’s porcine features aren’t making anyone swoon anymore.

Carey Mulligan seems too sweet for the part, though she did a wonderful job of playing a complicated character in the TV version of Northanger Abbey.

Affleck would be the best casting so far, though I’ll wait till this runs on AMC or TBS or something, in any case. Baz Luhrmann is an ott hack. The only way this movie would be worse would be if alternate ott hack Tom Ford directed it.

  42. Az says:

Hm… I thought Affleck was a good choice but my son (who loves the book) says Affleck is too refined. And I think Joseph Gordon-Levitt would make a perfect Nick.

  43. Zelda says:

    @Az
Joseph Gordon Levitt. YES. That would be my Nick choice.
Boo to Tobey Maguire @Ally’s “nasal narration” comment hit the nail on the head. Plus there is something about his face that makes me want to smack the earnestness right off it

  44. Nia says:

You’re son is absolutely right, that’s it. Ben Affleck is somehow too refined or too ‘posed’ for it.

    Right on.

Oh, and here is a link to the version I love (that I have been raving about, lol):

    http://www.amazon.com/Great-Gatsby-Mira-Sorvino/dp/B0000524FD/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1302359775&sr=1-1

  45. I'm a cyborg says:

    Nooo!!

  46. Sara says:

Wasn’t Jay Gatsby an older guy?
I remember Jay being much older than Nick and Daisy. If Leo is Jay, you need early twenty year olds for Nick, Daisy and Tom. Ben older than Leo, that just doesn’t work for me. I think much more appropriate to have Pitt or Cloney to play Jay.

  47. TinaWithPom says:

Sienna Miller as Daisy is perfect. And resounding YES to Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Nick.

I wonder who WOULD play Jordan Baker?

  48. Brisbanegirl says:

I think Abbie Cornish would be great as Jordan. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is perfect as Nick.

  49. Mario says:

Ben Affleck is a horrid actor, if you’re going to remake a film like The Great Gatsby why would you put an incompetent scab like Ben Affleck in it???

  50. Jaja says:

I agree #49 and I have to say that I love the idea of Sienna Miller as Daisy. That would be a great choice!

And why 3D? I hate 3D very few movies should do that, it’s so gimmicky and I actually think it’s bad for the eyes. They must be trying to reel in younger audiences…someone tell them that’s not enough!

#41 is totally right as is 18 and 46.
I also like the idea of Joseph Gordon Levitt in the film.

  51. Evelyn says:

I think Chrinstina Hendricks would make an excellent Myrtle. And I agree a million percent that JGL should be Nick, he’s brilliant and beautiful

  52. dahlia1947 says:

He was great in the Town and Yes I remember his role in Boiler Room! Not bad, not bad at all! And I have alot of fun just looking at him! 😉

  53. Chris says:

I just won The Town blue ray and DVD double pack, good for me. There’s no doubt now that Ben is back. But is he as big as he was prior to that run of flops? I’d say yes, bigger.

  54. Camille says:

This movie sounds like it is going to be really awful(The film ‘Australia’ springs to mind..). 3D *and* bad casting choices, yikes.

Some of the names being talked about in this comment section would be far better than who has actually been cast in it. *shudder*
