Bret Easton Ellis: Watching ‘Glee’ is like a “stepping into a puddle of HIV”

bee1

As you know by know, I really dislike Glee. I dislike the actual show, I dislike the actors on the show, I dislike the characters, and most of all, I dislike the IDEA of the show. As such, I don’t watch that junk. But far be it from me to judge a masochist like Bret Easton Ellis! BEE is the author of such novels as American Psycho, Less Than Zero and The Rules of Attraction. He was also working on a script for The Golden Suicides, which we talked about last year. BEE also hates Glee. But he still totally watches it:

Is this wrong? Sure. Should we, as a society, not makes jokes about puddles of HIV? Of course. Did I giggle? Yep. I also appreciate that Bret made it clear that he was not drunk, and I liked the reference to “the hivs”. Gah! I’m going to hell, you can just say it. Not only do I hate Glee, I laugh at jokes about puddles of HIV. HELL… see you there!

By the way, I’m brining this up because YOU KNOW Ryan Murphy is going to say something. This is a preemptive strike.

  1. MollyB says:

Yeah, not a fan of the show and not a prude but I don’t think that is funny at all. I think its pathetic and homophobic at the very least.

  2. curmudgeon says:

I detest Glee. Its like Kidz Bop does Broadway. However B. Ellis is kinda famous for making really awful arrogant and misogynistic comments. I followed him on Twitter for about ten minutes until he said something about how women writers all suck. Obviously paraphrased and don’t remember exactly what he said. But it was blatant arrogant, elitist and REALLY nasty.
Did ya see American Psycho? Was one of the worst films I’ve ever seen, and I like horror and general weirdness. Really dude get over yourself. Less Than Zero was written in present tense which highlighted the characters well, given their everything right now life style, but its not f’n Shakespeare.

  3. I don’t hate Glee. I even kind of, sort of like the idea. AND I TRIED TO WATCH IT. BOY. now I know how I can describe that feeling Glee gave me.

  4. Mshuffleupagus says:

He’s just waiting for them to perform Huey Lewis and The News.

  5. 2 MollyB: no offense, HOW this is homophobic? O.o

  6. Kristen says:

I couldn’t care less about what BEE has to say, but that crotch shot of Lea Michele is so gross.

  7. Sam says:

My friend’s sister calls it “the hiv” too and she’s has it, we’ve always found it a funny way to talk about it

  8. Rita says:

I don’t watch glee either but I’m assuming the “puddle of HIV” comment comes from the lack of machismo or bravado in the young male cast members ergo, the implication is that they are a bit affeminate. If so, then his comment is in the same vein as Blake Shelton’s dig at Taylor’s wayward interest in the boys from Broke Back Mountain, which I don’t find offense but HIV is a little harsher.

  9. The_Porscha says:

It’s a tacky comment but it’s also Bret Easton Ellis so there you go.

  10. BooBerry says:

BEE is a terrible, terrible writer, most of his stuff is completely unreadable crap done for mere shock value. But I agree about “Glee”, it’s the most obnoxious, trite and wildly overrated thing in show biz today.

  11. Sigh. says:

    @ curmudgeon —
I know he said that he didn’t think women can direct for the most part:

“I think, to a degree, all the women I named aren’t particularly visual directors. You could argue that Lost in Translation is beautiful, but is that [cinematographer Lance Acord]? I don’t know. Regardless of the business aspect of things, is there a reason that there isn’t a female Hitchcock or a female Scorsese or a female Spielberg? I don’t know. I think it’s a medium that really is built for the male gaze and for a male sensibility. I mean, the best art is made under not an indifference to, but a neutrality [toward] the kind of emotionalism that I think can be a trap for women directors. But I have to get over it, you’re right, because so far this year, two of my favorite movies were made by women, Fish Tank and The Runaways. I’ve got to start rethinking that, although I have to say that a lot of the big studio movies I saw last year that were directed by women were far worse than the sh***y big-budget studio movies that were directed by men.”

  12. mln76 says:

Ellis is gay/bisexual so I don’t think he meant it in a homophobic way…Alot of gay men call it ‘the hiv’ even my HIV + gay male friend.

Eventhough I dislike GLEE I wouldn’t necessarily be as harsh but when I see next week’s clip of Goopy singing Adele’s song I may end up changing my mind.

  13. Reality says:

I don’t find that funny at all. Yet another narcissistic loser shoots himself in the foot with a thoughtless ‘tweet’ best kept to himself. And loads of people call it ‘the hiv’.

God I hate twitter and the pathetic people who think they’re every moronic brainfart deserves to be shared.

  14. Dahlimama says:

Molly might have experienced BEE’s comment as homophobic because of the relevant (albeit cliche) relationship between gay men and a love of musicals. It may be a stereotype, but it isn’t entirely untrue. I’ve never seen the show, but maybe there is a prominent gay presence within the cast. I don’t know much about BEE either, but considering the comments about his blatant misogyny, I wouldn’t think it would be too far fetched to suspect he may also be a bit of a bigot. So I an see why MollyB would experience BEE’s tweet as homophobic.

  15. Deven says:

Glee was a pretty good show when it first came out. It quickly went from a good idea about different kids who loved to sing, to a nightmare of overdoing its own delusions of grandeur. The show never needed all those outsiders who throttled all the creativity and talent the actual cast had. It was a sweet show to begin with that’s been killed by publicity-hungry “stars.” It was ever thus.

  16. geekychic says:

my best friend watches it. i qoute: “it’s how americans picture they high-school. stereotype after stereotype. of course, the lesbian teacher is tough one; the brunette is negative, the blonde one is nice and good, the afro-american has to be heavier than anyone else, and of course-they even have a nerdy-looking guy in wheelchair. it’s ridicolous.” (i know this doesn’t sound PC, but i really don’t know how to write it differently).
and i agree.it is. it’s all subtle prejudices, and i don’t know if we are just extremly sensitive bc we aren’t in USA cultural circle or what, but i’m pretty surprised that no one seems bothered by it. then again, i’ve never seen more subtle prejudices and social snobism than in New York. And i live on the Balkan’s!
i’ll never watch it, and frankly-the cast and the media over-playing them just makes me want to vomit.

  17. Dahlimama says:

In the case of BEE being gay, nevermind my previous comment.

  18. geekychic says:

oh, and i don’t really know who the guy in the post is, and i’m so glad that Twitter ain’t something big in my society. facebook is enough, i tell ya.

  19. Trey says:

Yeah, seconding Bret Easton Ellis is bi. His books certainly give me the vibe too :3

  20. R says:

utterly repulive way to talk about anything – would you say like stepping in breast cancer or stepping in leukemia – wow- totally homophobic.

Maybe in his drunken stupor he was trying to spell hives – mmm getting drunk at 8 on a Tuesday night – sad.

I can’t account for the others that find it funny.

  21. TheMango says:

I giggled as well mostly because I hate Ryan Murphy and glee. Plus I don’t think it was homophobic, since I think the idea was that with so many gay characters, none of them seem strong (mentally). Like you said, they are all really effeminate. In fact its like making a stereotype of a stereotype.

On a side note, I actually first watched American Psycho (cause it has Bale swoons)and then read the book. That novel is one of the craziest stuff I have everr read. I actually think his work and style, albeit different and a bit to get adjusted to, is something I like. But I have to put it down after awhile, the gorey details can get too realistic and awful images come into my mind.

  22. Leticia says:

@Geekychic, you are correct in your observation about NYC. It’s the greatest city, but it’s about where you went to school, how much money you make, neighborhood in which you live, etc. And tolerance only goes in one direction. But still, a magical city.

  23. EdithP says:

His writing makes my head hurt, but I do love American Psycho.

I tried to watch Glee and got thru about 10 minutes of it before I had to turn it. Just not my thing at all.

  24. kira says:

Stepping into a puddle of HIV? What exactly is he trying to say? That Glee is comprable to a sometimes fatal disease? Hyperbolic much? Seriously, of all things to pick on in Hollywood, he picks Glee. I can think of a lot worse things out there (Jersey Shore and the Kardashians, anyone?) I’m definitely no Glee fan but his comment is ridiculous.

  25. Ellie says:

I personally feel the same way about the show, but never thought about expressing my distate quite like this; however it is very funny. And yes, I do feel a little ashamed at that fact, but I pride myself at having an odd sense of humor. And before you start juding me you should know I’m gay. So it’s kind of ok.

  26. Quest says:

I don’t like GLEE, don’t watch it, don’t care about it and I dislike Michelle whats-her-facezool.

  27. Andrea says:

That crotch shot belongs in a men’s mag…not in my face…yuck!!!

  28. Girafe99 says:

I tried to watch Glee, whilst I get the positive imagery it tries to portray but as it has already being said, it’s actually painfully stereotypical and conforming

  29. TheMango says:

@kira – Funny that you should mention it. He seems to be appreciative of The Hills and Jersey Shore. In fact he wrote a whole article about it.

  30. curmudgeon says:

    @Sigh
the comment that I read on twitter made that look like a love note.
Also, its not even really funny. He’s a writer. where is the irony or clever back handed attack that relates directly to some attribute of the show? Just a puddle of random disease? Oh dude. Thats genius.
Sort of like a drunk yelling the “C” word at some bartender. Like what does that have to do with anything?
    @mshufflupagus
    V/funny 🙂

  31. Marjalane says:

I’m sorry but I am SO over with political correctness. People say stupid things. People tweet stupid things. It’s O.K. if some people say something, but not others- (I’m looking at you Kobe Bryant) and we’ve gotten to a point where we have Hillary Duff lecturing us about hurting feelings on T.V. commercials. Who CARES what this guy says in his tweets? I’m not all that interested in living in a Nanny State where stupidity gets dissected from every angle and people are forced to apologize for every utterance.

Most of us know people with HIV, I do, and I’m not offended by this. It’s like there’s a movement afoot to force us into a “like”, “don’t like”, society. How boring that would be.

  32. original kate says:

if anyone would know how to recognize crap it would be BEE.

  33. Pauline says:

Ugh, this is comment that came from the guy who wrote about stuffing a rat up a woman’s you know what. Really respectable.

  34. Sigh. says:

    @ curmudgeon —

And somehow I am not at all surprised.

  35. mln76 says:

@Marajalane I get your point but people should take responsibility when they use words like th N- word or F-g that have been used in the past and even currently to inflict violence and pain on others. I see Ellis’s quote and think first off he isn’t using words like F-G and has he has been open about his own sexuality (bisexual or gay) the wording is harsh but it’s satirical that’s in keeping with his style. On the other hand making a blanket statement like ‘all women are bad writers’ or ‘gay people are going to hell’ or calling someone in a public arena a ‘F-g’ should be called out on the innapropriate behavior.

  36. Lala11_7 says:

I always get BBE mixed up with Jay McInerney, who wrote one of my FAVORITE books “Story of my Life” with one of my FAVORITE characters…”Allison Poole”…imgaine my HORROR when I found out that Jay based “Allison” on his real life ex- RIELLE HUNTER!!! Yes…John Edward’s jump off is the basis for one of my favorite characters in one of my FAVORITE books…

    I digress…

BBE is like his writing…very off putting and caustic…

One more thing…the book “Less than Zero” is NOTHING like the movie…NOTHING at all…

  37. Zelda says:

BEE is not straight. His HIV comment is NOT homophobic. For those of you making that link, you’re doing it with your own minds. That’s on you.

It’s not particularly funny or clever, mind you, but it’s not homophobic.

Also http://gleesucks.com/ does a great rundown episode by episode, calling out just why this show is so bad. If you hate Glee, it’s a fun read.

  38. LittleFATMe says:

I like Glee. I can’t really tell you what has happened or what the plots are because it’s kinda like Barney is for a two year old. Colors moving, music, noise – all that distracts me while my brain turns off. Sometime you need to just check out – and Glee does a great job at checking me out. Some shows are so awful I can’t let my brain turn off (ie my fav horrendously guilty shoot me now pleasure right now – Toddlers & Tiaras) and others are too good for me to zone out (ie my actual fav shows Bones and Fringe – I love me some Pacey.) Glee is the perfect amount of cheap entertainment meets nonsense for me!

  39. Brittney says:

Those of you who don’t find this comment homophobic must not remember the 80s at all.

I hate Glee too, but to make a comment that undoes decades of progress is disgusting to say the least. There’s no question that he was referring to gay or effeminate characters and song choices; he mentions both in the Tweet. When AIDS was first discovered, it was “the gay disease”–if you were gay, you were unclean, and you probably had AIDS (or so the majority of people believed). AIDS and HIV are not restricted to the gay community; in fact, they’re not even the majority of those afflicted. It’s still a huge worldwide problem, and so is homophobia, and to make light of both at once for the sake of a “joke” is in piss-poor taste.

And yes, I can take a joke. This is just a terrible one (not to mention not very funny). Also, saying “I’m gay and I laughed” or “I have friends with HIV and I laughed” has absolutely no bearing on whether it’s a respectful thing to say. He can post whatever he wants, but this particular post speaks wonders about the content of his character.

  40. Scarlet Vixen says:

@Pauline: That’s the first thing I thought of, too!

  41. Roma says:

I can’t believe how many people hate BEE’s writing. I, personally, love his work and find it dark, twisted but very in touch with humanity.

His status made me giggle as well.

  42. Rasputina says:

Marjalane, I hereby propose you to be my wife.

Some people are stupid, so let them. I suggest toughening up, because the world’s turning into a sissyland. Soon enough people who say stupid things will start accusing people who are calling them out on their idiocy for being discriminative and hurtful and everybody will agree. Just grow a thicker skin. Don’t feed the bullies or something like that.

I didn’t find the HIV joke funny, personally, but nothing wrong with it either. *shrug* I guess I’m an insensitive hag.

  43. CandyKay says:

I’m not gay, nor particularly PC, and I still think that’s an appalling thing to say.

Millions of people have died ugly deaths sourced to HIV infections, and tens of millions of children will grow up missing a mother or father or both because of it. Ho ho ho.

Was it Roseanne Barr who used to do that routine about the very few topics that were off limits to comedians? The Holocaust, rape, the Kennedy assassination. This was before September 11, but I’d happily add that one to the list. HIV and AIDS is a good candidate for the list as well. Not funny.

  44. Catherine says:

The panty shot made me want to vomit.

  45. Kristen says:

    @ lala

I LOVE Story of My Life.

  46. LindyLou says:

I’m not a Glee fan – just don’t get the appeal whatsoever. Tweeting something negative about it seems to be an easy way for people to get some press. Is this guy promoting something? I wouldn’t be surprised!

  47. Sassy says:

His joke? not funny. It’s dumb. And I hate Glee and the actors on the show, especially Smuggella, Lea Michele.

  48. moi says:

    I hate Glee.

  49. Ron says:

Regardless of weather you like the show or not, the comment is crass and tasteless. But then again BEE is all that and less, so it’s to be expected.

  50. KateNonymous says:

That joke wasn’t funny. It didn’t even make sense. My guess? Bret Easton Ellis really wants his 80s-era celebrity status back, and thought, “I need to be hip and relevant. I’ll criticize Glee!”

That said, I can’t stand Glee. I watched a couple of episodes and couldn’t stand the treacly self-importance of the show. And clearly that’s just gotten worse, based on Ryan Murphy’s attitudes and behavior. You’d think that guy was saving civilization with that show.

  51. kazoo says:

HAHA. so going to start using that. puddles of hiv.

  52. Kaiser says:

I honestly and truly don’t understand all of the strong emotions with this one. He didn’t say “I hope they get HIV” and he didn’t say “They have HIV because they’re all gay” – he just made an odd little quip about the show in general. Would you guys be getting so upset if the players and the disease changed?

NCIS is like a puddle of dengue fever.
Law & Order is like a puddle of lymphoma.
Bones is like a puddle of lyme disease.

  53. Az says:

Someone should tell that douche Bret Easton Ellis that being an enfant terrible only works if you actually are an enfant. Grow up, you vile, misogynistic tool.

  54. rhiana says:

I think it is weird that he hates Glee but mentioned The Hills was one of his guilty pleasures! Neither are particularly ‘high brow’, The Hills especially was so fake! (Although I still watched it)
Maybe he is just jumping on the “I hate glee’ bandwagon!

  55. anyhoo says:

    @Brittney

That’s is exactly what I think.

  56. Samigirl says:

Kasier, Don’t forget house…It’s a puddle of….LUPIS. (Always with the lupis!)

  57. Photo JoJo says:

    @Brittany – couldn’t have said it better!

  58. Racheal says:

I laughed. So did my gay friend with HIV. It’s funny.

  59. Nana says:

HOMOPHOBIC?! hahahaha! my roommate is HIV positive and she is a heterosexual female.
And I did find the joke funny. And no I won’t apologize.

  60. kazoo says:

kaiser, i thought it was funny. but i am very un-pc and make fun of everything/everyone.

  61. deadlymistress24 says:

    @geekychic

It depends on your outlook on NYC. I was born and raised in Queens, and while I do agree that in places like the Upper East Side of Manhattan, where a majority of NYC’s social elite live, there is a bit of snobbery, I’ve never really encountered it. I also tend to brush those kinds of things off anyway and appreciate the city as is. If you ignore those who perceive themselves as “above it all”, NYC is a more tolerant place than it seems. But maybe I’m giving my hometown too much credit. lol.
Oh, and I don’t really watch Glee. I have a few of their covers that sound somewhat catchy, but other than that, I agree that the show, in itself, is a further portrayal of American teenage stereotypes. I take quite a bit offense to the show since I actually was in glee club when I was younger. We didn’t do that karaoke style crap, we did arias and even Gregorian chants.

  62. Chris says:

Glee isn’t a show it’s a root canal. It’s good to see it being treated with the contempt it deserves.

  63. Kaiser says:

Samigirl – House is totally a puddle of lupus. http://bit.ly/fMMZP7

  64. Shay says:

Watched season one and that’s where it ended for me.

  65. makula says:

Love to watch Glee. Love the songs. It is enjoyable and helps me de-stress after a long day. It is just a show without the pretensions of being deep or Shakespearean-drama-worthy. Just chill and enjoy it for what it is. And this BEE Guy is very arrogant. Maybe he can do a better show – one like his terrible books.

  66. WOM says:

@52 “Would you guys be getting so upset if the players and the disease changed?”

No. Because it’s not a reasonable analogy. There is (unfortunately) a stigma to contracting HIV. The same is not true for those afflicted with lupus, lymphoma, dengue fever, etc. BEE’s attempt at humour is meant to play upon the distasteful and outdated association of HIV/AIDs with homosexuality, hence the Colfer reference.

Personally I find the comment obscure, humourless and meaningless. So pretty much like everything ever written by Bret Easton Ellis.

  67. MaudeLebowski says:

Watched Episode One and that’s where it ended for me. 🙂

  68. Chris says:

I hate the long winded Glee ads too. There’s nothing impressive about soulless cover versions of other people’s songs.

  69. Estella says:

I think Ellis’s comment is hilarious. I don’t know what is going on with society when a show like “Glee” has so many steadfast supporters. The show is just so GAY. To quote Joan Cusack’s character in one of my favorite movies, “In & Out,” Is EVERYBODY gay???

  70. Ruffian9 says:

    What?

In what way does this make any sense? Am I missing something?

  71. oh hey says:

Who cares about a homo who hates chicks? Are all the hip UN-PC crowd going to back me up here?

  72. Ashley says:

We are all allowed to say whatever we feel even if it is not considered respectful or appropriate. I think this guy stole the whole “puddle of hiv” joke from a commedian. Puddle of hiv is a just a silly thing to say because puddles of hiv don’t exist, nor do puddles of breast cancer of leukemia. There are worse thing going on in the world besides a dumb stolen joke attempt on twitter, things that actually warrant being offended.

  73. geekychic says:

    @ #22 and #61 (sorry, i can’t see your nick’s!):
NYC is a beautiful, wonderous city; i stayed in Astoria (Broadway) and in a hotel in Manhattan-and i have to admit,i never thought i would like it before, but i fell in love with it. it really has it’s magic.
but: the silent, so very subtle class prejudices were everywhere-in the subway, in the midst of elite restaurant in Metropolitan, street, bookstore. They were never pointed with maliociousness (?) towards me : i still thinks it’s one city i would always like to come to. 😉

  74. Emily says:

I like Glee, but that’s a funny way to insult it. My friends and I joke about HIV/AIDS all the time, I’ll have to add this one to my repetoire. And I don’t think it was meant to be homophobic-it’s not just gay guys who get HIV.

  75. Emma says:

That is NOT funny. At all. It’s cruel and mean-spirited and just not funny. Ugh. People make me so mad sometimes. How would you feel if you’d lost someone to the virus? Obviously you haven’t or you wouldn’t be such an insensitive bitch* about it.

*let me just add that I always love your articles, I think you are very funny and I usually love your bitchiness. But this? This was way, way out of line.

  76. Emma says:

And to those who say that it is not homophobic because it is not only gay people who get aids, that’s BS. It was obviously a reference to homosexuals as there are gay characters on the show and the show also has a large gay audience.

  77. Chris says:

“God I hate twitter and the pathetic people who think they’re every moronic brainfart deserves to be shared.”

@Reality: Well put. Whenever my kids start to get a bit dippy I tell them that they don’t have verbalize every thought that pops into their heads and they sure as hell don’t have to act on them.

  78. Goobie Gillis says:

    Totally and completely homophobic.
I guess the new Melrose Place, The Hills, The Real this and that of whatever city and Jersey Shore aren’t like stepping into a puddle of HIV, Syphilis, Clamydia, and Herpes???

So sex with out protection brings disease if you are a sleaze. This guy has probably had 3 out of 5 and he thinks everyone who is gay has AIDS.
Nice society he’s promoting,,,Brett “gay-name” Easton Ellis is more Trash than any Cheap Gay Trick out there.
You know it takes one to catch one.

  79. Marjalane says:

    @# 75

Are you serious? I feel sorry for you if something so minimal causes you to get your panties in such a bunch. WHO cares if this guy makes an HIV joke- does it REALLY impact your life?

  80. truthzbetta says:

Ditto on not understanding/wanting the nasty surprise crotch shot.

Here I was trying to read an elegant post about the HIV’s and I had to step into a puddle of yeast.

  81. jc126 says:

How does a comment “undo decades of progress?”

  82. sarah talks says:

Curmudgeon, women wrote the screenplay for American Psycho so you kind of helped him prove his narrow-minded point ,when you said it was terrible. He wrote the book and they rewrote it as a screenplay.

  83. sarah talks says:

I actually liked Glee. It appealed to my inner corny tastes. But I think a lot of the content is very inappropriate for their young audience.

Glee will be off the air soon because they continue to push at the boundaries of what is acceptable to show a young audience.

Ryan Murphy knows his audience is young, most of them are in elementary and middle school and the show is downright disrespectful in that sense.

I don’t think a kid under 15 should be allowed to watch that shit. They need to push it to a later hour when the young kids are in bed. Just because the show is cheesy and bubblegum doesn’t mean it’s for young minds.

I feel like Glee is like those Disney animated movies where they slip in one frame here and there of photofraphs of penises and sex.

Fantasia had penis photographs inserted in a scene, so it works subliminally on young minds. They target young audiences and the parents are so glad to have the kids preoccupied they’re unaware of the trash being funneled into their kid’s minds.

Lion King and other disney films had subliminal trash inserted just like GLEE does.

So far Glee has heavily promoted alcohol for kids, unprotected sex between both straight and gay kids, teenage pregnancy, etc.

I say promoted because they never denounce it fully and the message/moral isn’t strong enough to justify doing shows on it.

With the alcohol show they glorified it for an hour and then at the end mumbled some crap about kids will do what they want to do anyway. but teens shouldn’t drink. I felt like they were just so happy to have clearance to use Jamie Foxx’s song that they got sidetracked and giddy and made a 1 hour homage to it.

We all know how Mr. Murphy gets over songs and rights to use them on his show.

I was also disturbed when the actor playing wheelchair kid jumped out of the wheelchair and did a break dancing solo for 5 minutes because that’s disrespectful to all the real handicapped kids who can’t just stop wearing their disability when a hot song comes on the radio.

Now, they have wheelchair kid undergoing a, miracle operation so he will be able to walk soon. That kind of stuff just shows what a jerk Ryan Murphy and CO. are.

  84. Zoya says:

What a discussing and failed attempt at a joke. he is essentially saying that HIV and AIDS are “gay issues”. have we traveled back in time to the 80’s?

  85. telesma says:

And reading Bret Easton Ellis is like stepping into a puddle of hollow angst, depravity, and depression.

  86. Flan says:

If this sexist moron thinks it’s bad, maybe I should start watching it then

  87. Pete says:

Seeing that Chris Colfer not only plays a gay character in the show but is also a real life gay guy makes his comment infinitely more disgusting.

  88. Gigohead says:

My ignorance here but why did I think it gave him the Hives!

  89. Sakyiwaa says:

    i don’t like Glee.

BEE is an elitist snob, and I think he pretty much lives to provoke people through his writing and his personality. That’s his shtick. I don’t think he gives one iota whether anyone thinks it’s homophobic or not, so any media backlash would likely tickle him pink.
Regarding his misogynistic comments, I find it very funny that a woman directed American Psycho to such great effect, I find that one of the best movies in the last 10 yrs, and far superior to the book, which was still very good, but mostly just tried to be shocking, whereas the movie was more satirical.

He’s got a book coming out.

    Easy.

  92. Mairead says:

1 – Never friggin’ heard of him before now and will happily forget his name by tomorrow.
2 – His joke didn’t make a lick of sense to me. And I’ll laugh at anything.
3 – Slag off Glee all you want, but leave our sweet Porcelain alone!

@Sarah talks, I don’t remember where Artie (Kevin McHale) started breakdancing, but in the episode directed by Joss Whedon he had a daydream where he began a flash-mob to Safety Dance. I thought it was glorious and is my absolute favourite scene of pretty much any tv programme in the past decade. It was bittersweet because Kevin is a dancer. The Christmas moment where he got robo legs was cringeworthy though, I agree.

Want a reason to watch Glee ?
Darren Criss. He plays Blaine who’s gay, but WE LADIES WIN ON THIS ONE because he’s straight in real life. He’s amazing.
His new photos in OUT magazine are surely to get some hearts racing. And he’s AMAZINGLY talented too !

    FUTURE HGF !!!

    @Sarah
I think this conversation is over but let me add this. I don’t base my opinion of someone’s work on whether or not it was created by a male or a female artist. So the fact that I personally thought American Psycho sucked is irrelivant to what BEE said. Sorry, I thought it was sophomoric and stupid. My opinion. I never said he was a terrible writer. I said he wasn’t Shakespeare. He’s not. I basically said he was a douche bag.
And I think he is. I wasn’t offended by what he said. I just thought it was stupid, uncreative and related to nothing. If he’s so damn clever he should be able to come up with an insult that wouldn’t be heard in the cafeteria of an f’ing jr. high. Cuz that’s what I heard.

  95. Ashley says:

I tried to watch Glee. I wanted to like it. Jayne Lynch is so funny and awsome and Chris Colfer is just so adorable. Unfortunately the teenage girls in the show were so shrill and annoying, it really made me cringe. Infact everything about the show is just too much. The sound, color, and emotion are just cranked to the max all the time. I think it comes down to the fact that I’m just too old for it. I’ve forgotten alot about what it is like to be a teenager, everything seems so intense and important at that age. Glee is a show for tweens and teens and I just don’t get it and never will.

  96. Brooklyn says:

uh… Lea sweetie. There’s a BIG FAT line between art and porn. You have crossed that line. Congrats.

  97. Hakura says:

@Curmudgeon“I detest Glee. Its like Kidz Bop does Broadway. However B. Ellis is kinda famous for making really awful arrogant and misogynistic comments. I followed him on Twitter for about ten minutes until he said something about how women writers all suck. Obviously paraphrased and don’t remember exactly what he said. But it was blatant arrogant, elitist and REALLY nasty.”

ITA. I hadn’t thought about it as ‘Kids Bop on broadway’, but it really is. xD (Horrifically, I could realy SEE them developing something Glee for broadway. Probably already started working on it.)

The comment is just horrendous & disgusting, & beyond insulting to the homosexual community. It’s a blatant association between an activity often participated in by gay people (like theatre/musicals), & HIV. It’s also ignorant, as countless numbers of people who have HIV/AIDS are getting it from drug needles, & heterosexual sexual relationships.

He’s just a prick looking for another way to get the public’s attention by something something gross & ‘shocking’. It’s obviously something that’s worked for him before, so why wouldn’t he keep doing it?

  98. Shaina says:

I hate Glee and I haven’t even seen it. Just the advertisements for it are enough to turn me against it. It looks really stupid and bubble gummy.
Did anyone else notice that in the 2nd picture everyone looks as if they are doing the “loser” L-on-the-forehead thing?

  99. Caz says:

The Glee first season was glorious. I cared if Schu and Emma would get together. The second season plus the crotch photo of Lea sums up why I don’t bother. Could not care less about the show or anyone on it. Except Jane Lynch’s Sue Sylvester and even that’s not enough for me to watch it anymore. The show has jumped the shark.

  100. jemshoes says:

Please Kaiser / CB , all future posts about Lea Michelle and/or Glee – can you NOT publish that awful locker-room crotch shot? Please? 🙂
