Reese Witherspoon hustles to keep up with Robert Pattinson’s fan-friendly moves

Even though Water for Elephants is being sold as some epic, period romance, I think the problem for filmgoers and, in the end, for the producers of the film will be the distinct lack of chemistry between the two leads, Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson. I think Reese and Sparkles probably like each other in a friendly sort of way, but I seriously doubt they would ever get hot for each other. They just seem… incompatible, I suppose. Incompatible sexually, professionally, physically. He’s so tall, pretty and easy-going, she’s so petite and anal retentive. Who thought this would work?

Anyway, it seems that not only are they incompatible, they’re also competitive for attention and love from the fans. While Sparkles can create a riot wherever he goes, Reese needs to regain her “America’s Sweetheart” status and do the heavy lifting required to cozy up to America yet again. So when Reese heard that Sparkles came to the Water for Elephants premiere an hour early so that he could meet his fans, Reese busted her ass to play catch-up:

Robert Pattinson knows how to work a crowd. The “Twilight” hunk showed up an hour before the premiere of “Water for Elephants” to schmooze with fans Sunday night, sources said. His driver dropped him “at the top of the block” so he could stroll along West 54th Street and sign autographs.

When a rep for co-star Reese Witherspoon saw Pattinson’s populist move, she quickly called her to get in on the act, a witness said. A car “screeched up 20 minutes before the film” and deposited her in the middle of the block. Witherspoon’s rep said, “Both actors came early to meet and greet their fans.”

[From Page Six]

That’s so funny! So, according to Reese’s rep, they both get credit for showing up early, even though Sparkles seem to do it of his own accord, to be nice to fans, and Reese did it because she didn’t want Sparkles to make her look like a bitch. Ha! Reese is really trying so hard, isn’t she? I’d like to see her do another movie where she was playing a realistic romantic lead. Or something. I don’t know – something that allows her to freely fly her natural high-maintenance vibe.

I will forever think of her as her character from “Election”. probably because that’s what I think she’s like IRL.

  2. Marjalane says:

Some stars just seem to come about, make a name for themselves, and then fade from favor. For me, Reese is one of those. Not impressed with her, don’t like her pointy chin, and am still pissy that she’s in this movie.

  3. Lala11_7 says:

I think this is one of the FUNNIEST things I will probably read all day…becase Reese has always come off a bit “cold” to me (like, she didn’t have to do much acting in “Election”)…and if there’s one thing Robbie knows how to do…it’s to get the girls undies in a twist!!! (And it will be the females who saves this movie…)

  4. mia girl says:

In interviews they seem to have a relaxed, cute vibe together… I’ll reserve judgment on the on- screen “love/sex” chemistry until I see the movie.

In the end, on-screen chemistry or no, the movie looks aesthetically beautiful (design and costumes), it has Christoph Waltz (awesome) and Pattinson looks great. I’ll be seeing it.

  5. kazoo says:

zoya, me too! i love that movie so much.

i think reese needs to chill on the romantic movies and do something more whimsical.

  6. mln76 says:

@Zoya ITA she is the girl in Election. I admire that spunk though.

  7. chiarascurro says:

I read that she’s going to be in Pioneer Woman. Hope she doesn’t ruin it.
Love the real love story of Pioneer Woman.

  8. curmudgeon says:

    Awww..
I don’t know if its BS but this kid just seems so damn sweet to me.
I really hope he finds someone besides that entitled eye rolling little troll soon.

I won’t see it in the theater.. I love Christoph but he is so being typecased in his films and why is he not promoting. I have not see one interview or photo of him anywhere. He is one of the stars and a true talent. WHY are they using him as a draw. He has a following and has way more acting cred then either of these two.

This film is a big deal for Rob and Reese. They both need this to work. Reese after the fail of How Do You Know. and Rob needs it to be a hit to show that he can bring in money outside of Twilight. Harry Potter does not count. He died in that. So the BO totals will be very telling. PLUS Reese may have a win/lose. Because if it does well many will say it was because of Rob and he will get the most credit. If it tanks then it will hit both of them. More Reese because that next Twilight film will make lots of money, but may prove that is all the audience will see Rob in or as (Vampire Edward)..

I am curious how this all plays out. Plus it is Easter weekend. Tyler Perry has a film coming out. And African Americans will see that over WFE (well I speak for my family. Not to mention the holdovers from last week. RIO..hmmm this will be interesting.

They are together briefly promoting the movie and once that’s over, it’s on to the next project, with even more money in their inflated bank accounts. It’s all good, even having to endure a runny nose.

  11. almond says:

Oh, she was just great in Election; it would be funny if she was that try-hard in real life.

But Robert is kind of average acting-wise and that’s just being nice. He’s pretty and modest and self-deprecating but he doesn’t blow me away with his talent. Not to mention, my knickers aren’t in any danger of getting in a knot with regards to him.

I say “meh” on this whole PR thing. They still have more money than I’ll probably earn in a lifetime.

  12. beth says:

ha rob and kirsten have been making lots of doofus faces for the papz lately – wonder whattup – i think they decided it’d be easier on their poor overused smiling muscles

  13. Hollowdoll says:

bwaaahahahaha! I could so see this! she comes screeching up to the curb like Cruella DeVille.

    @lisa
Actually I have seen lots of photos of Waltz and lots of junket video interviews. Plus red carpet photos/interviews. Not to mention that he is just as proximately featured in movie trailers/TV posts as Pattinson and Witherspoon.

I agree that Waltz does have a major draw of a particular type of movie goer (namely those who loved Inglorious Basterds). My husband actually wants to see Water For Elephants because Waltz is in it. He saw the TV spot and I was surprised to have him tell me that he wants to see the movie. Now that is what I call a draw!

He is just not going to be the lead of an ET, Access Hollywood, and People magazine type story. He doesn’t have that kind of overall draw. Plus I guess talk shows are not his kind of thing.

  15. geekychic says:

you know why i won’t watch this movie(except the fact that he can’t act to save his life)?
they seem like mother and son, or something. even in the trailers.
and there lies the problem: i think reese was made to be his leading lady in hope to, even more, connect with the twi-moms, who are histerical about him-and main audience who should help him transition to non-twi movies.
on the other side, i guess hot-young-stuff is great when your making your comeback.
except when he can’t act. and chemistry is non-existent. 😉
btw, i do love his looks and charms. we just have to figure out something for him to do. ;)))

  16. KattyKat says:

I see no appeal in him. His face is flat and he can’t act. It is so blatant in the last trailer. I’m staying home. Reese won as Oscar. It makes her look desperate.

  17. Nanz says:

I have no real attraction or aversion to either actor, and maybe that’s the reason this movie makes no sense to me. Or maybe it’s bc I haven’t read the book. Was the book THAT good? My understanding is that he saves her from an abusive relationship. And they’re circus performers/workers or something. Right? Just don’t understand why that story would make a good movie.

  18. hairball says:

I’m going to see it, but I have a very bad feeling about it. I so want to like it. I so want RPatz to do well.

However, from what I’ve seen in clips………it falls very, very flat. But, maybe I’m wrong. I hope so.

  19. Micki says:

I haven’t seen many films with RP but even this supposedly “amazing chemistry” in Twilight wasn’t there. I was wondering through the first film whether I need stronger lenses. Is there any film with him where there actually IS a spark?

  20. Kat says:

Love Reese and Christoph, never seen Robert in anything (must be one of the few people on the planet who didn’t care to see Twilight) but he seems like a decent enough guy. For me, Reese is the draw to see this movie, and not one of the Twilight cast members.

I find it funny that a man who had the same type A, driven personality as Reese would be dubbed a go-getter, while Reese (or any women with the same personality) is “cold”. So it’s okay for men to be driven, but if a woman is driven, she’s somehow a bitch & betraying her gender because she’s unapologetic in wanting to meet all her personal & professional goals. It’s fracking stupid.

  21. Sam says:

She just looks way, way, way too old for him. I mean, she was cast as his mother in Vanity Fair. Maybe her character in the book is supposed to be so much older than him, but they look off together & no chemistry & I adore Rob, so I would usually be excited to see him in a role outside of Twilight. But I can’t even muster any desire to see this 🙁

  22. My Darling Pinkett says:

You know, Kaiser, methinks you have an ickle wickle crush on Sparklepants. Lol.

I do think they’ll lack chemistry in the movie, but I like Reese Witherspoon. It’s just a mismatch, that’s all. He probably shouldn’t be in the movie at all, and neither should she, as much as I like her. Her character is younger and decidedly not as blonde. They also made a mistake in casting that wig on her head!

As for this story, who knows if it’s true. It’s hard to believe anything when it comes to gossip, but it is funny.

  23. Flan says:

I like both of them personality wise and hope the movie does well for them.

  24. bluebird says:

I predicted this before, they have ZERO chemistry! Why? Because there will always be comparison between Reese and Kristen Stewart. Obviously, Kristen Stewart, the leading lady and real life sweetheart of Robert Pattinson is way much prettier than Reese. Kristen is young only 21 years old, she’s hot, fresh and so sexy! Reese Witherspoon is married (2x?) already 34 years old, with children. She really looks like mother to Rob with her annoying pointed chin and super blond curly hair. If you look closer, Robert Pattinson is also prettier than Reese. The facial profile of Reese Witherspoon is bony with long pointed chin. They are absolutely incompatible on screen! Unlike Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, they look so cute and their facial profiles are so adorable and refreshing! Whoever thought of casting Rob and Reese as lovers in WFE, it’s a big mistake!!!
