Julie Bowen: ‘You have to drink’ to get beautiful like Jennifer Aniston

anistonbowen
Modern Family’s Julie Bowen is co-starring with Jennifer Aniston in that upcoming ensemble comedy, Horrible Bosses. In the few interviews I’ve seen with Bowen she’s been laugh out loud funny, so it’s clear she’s making a joke here but it can easily be misconstrued. Anyway Bowen tries to explain Jennifer Aniston’s accessible kind of beauty by saying that she’s beautiful like we all imagine we are when we’re drunk and squint at ourselves in the mirror. That cracks me up. Her comments could also be interpreted as saying that Aniston owes her beauty to drinking, which might not be too far off the mark.

Jennifer Aniston’s appeal is near universal. People want to work with her, protect her, be her or date her. For women, it’s fundamental, says Modern Family’s Julie Bowen – Aniston sets the mark for how they’d like to look.

“She’s one of our own,” Bowen tells PEOPLE of her costar in the upcoming movie Horrible Bosses. “She’s incredibly beautiful in the way that you think you could be if you got drunk enough and looked in the mirror just at the right angle.”

Bowen, 41, says she didn’t even have to film any scenes with Anison, 42, before being sucked in.

“In the makeup trailer, I was pulled into her orbit,” Bowen said with a laugh at the City Year’s Spring Break: Destination Education event at Sony Pictures Studios. “I’ve met her a few times before, she’s an incredibly nice person. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a bad word said about her, and it’s all true.”

Bowen herself has helped reinforce the sex appeal of women in their 40s. But she says Aniston’s allure is underestimated.

“You think she’s an accessible sort of beautiful,” she says with another laugh, “but you really can’t get that beautiful on your own. You’d have to drink your way there.”

[From People]

That opening line about Aniston is ridiculous: “People want to work with her, protect her, be her or date her.” This is another planted piece by Huvane about how great Aniston is, and I’ll be honest it sort-of works. It’s better to have someone who can string a coherent sentence together sing Aniston’s praises and make a joke about it than quote her directly or plant another story about how she’s dating an up-and-coming star who has previously denied having anything to do with her.

Also, Bowen kind of looks like Aniston but not in a way that at all pales to her. She’s beautiful in her own right. Maybe she has fond memories of getting drunk with Aniston on set and/or is just hoping to get blitzed later. She’s got three boys under the age of six: Oliver, who turned five earlier this month, and twins John and Gustav, who turn two May 8. (I think she’s with Oliver and one of the twins below.)

Julie bugged me on ED….remember that show? She would totally dis Ed and he was so in love with her and then she was with that gray haired principal guy that I can’t stand. I never did forgive her for that. ya, I know she ended up with Ed but still…it was all just awkward.

  2. umm says:

You’d have to drink (a lot) to wanna look like J.Aniston…what with her angular face shape, too-close eyes, blobby nose, weird mouth/smile. Julie Bowen isn’t the most beautiful gal but she has classically pretty features.

  3. Granger says:

I think Julie is much prettier than Jennifer!!! JA is pretty, but the truth is, she has nothing but time on her hands to work out and focus on her appearance. Not to demean JA’s efforts — kudos to her for maintaining such a gorgeous figure over the age of 40 — but Julie has THREE small children. I’m more inclined to admire someone who takes care of not only her own physical well-being, but the well-being of three (four, including her husband) other people as well.

  4. Hollowdoll says:

She has a strong jaw like Kelly Osbourne.

  5. Stephy2585 says:

It’s funny when women in hollywood talk about beauty/accessability, etc.

They are all “Real Life” gorgeous…As in if we saw them in real life as non-celebrities we’d think they were shockingly good looking.
    Works the other way too…
For “real life” I’m a decent looking person. But shoot a camera at me and throw me on the tv screen and suddenly I’m not so great looking, haha.

Both women are gorgeous and to deny that is foolishness.

  6. curmudgeon says:

Her character on Boston Legal (god I miss that show) was annoying, but I think she’s a great comedian. She’s perfect on Modern Family. That’s my favorite incarnation of her yet.

  7. lucy2 says:

I think they’re both pretty. That movie has a good cast, I’m hoping it’s worth seeing.
Julie is really funny. She is in amazing shape, especially after 3 young kids, though I think sometimes she gets a little too skinny.

  8. Rhiley says:

I love her character on Modern Family but I don’t think she is very good at giving interviews. I have seen her in several and they were pretty uncomfortable to watch because she seems 1) Jealous of the attention Sofia gets 2) Rather unfunny in real life. But it is hard for me to dislike her because I love her character so much. She is a great comedic actress, at least in the same vain the Debra Messing is a great comedic actress.

  9. Quest says:

What do any of these hollywood starlets know about true beauty…most only know what the doctor can enhance.

  10. Solveig says:

I don’t know who she is, but she could be the love child of Gwyneth P. and Claire Danes.
*Oh, how I hate when celebrities ass-kiss each others”

  11. Kaiser says:

Yeah, I know lots of guys who LOVE Julie Bowen. She’s got more accessible, girl-next-door beauty than Aniston.

  12. Ell says:

As much as Jennifer Aniston is hated by some on the blogs, the fact is people in the industry have nothing but positive things to say about her, facts are facts, gossip is make-believe. I prefer to believe the people with first-hand knowledge rather than folks who don’t know her and have a possible agenda.

  13. N.D. says:

Unlike Aniston Julie Bowen is really beautiful. Or at least pretty. Aniston’s got great body, but her face is not pretty at all except maybe her eyes. And that bloated look she’s sporting lately makes it even worse imho (is it from drinking?).

  14. Lisa Turtle says:

I think Julie Bowen is pretty, but rather “generic” looking. To my eyes, Julie Bowen and Elizabeth Banks look so much alike that I can’t tell the difference.

I don’t really find Aniston pretty. I think that Aniston is fighting her unconventional looks and losing. She could have been a really unique looking actress if she’d never messed with her nose, and maintained her Greek-ethnic beauty. Now her nose just looks stubby, and oddly shaped. There is no balance to her face.

Both women are “girl pretty.” Girls don’t find them threatening because their “beauty” is achievable.

Aniston’s hair and her arms are always cited as her best features. Both are achieveable with the right amount of exercise, and a great colorist.

  15. alexandra says:

I totally get what she is saying about the drinking and feeling beautiful. A few yearss back in my 20’s I was pretty lit up went to the bathroom and put make up on looked at myself in the mirror and felt sexy and hot. People were looking at me and I was feeling just gorgeous. When I come home my mom asks me”what is wrong with me?” And tells me to look at myself in the mirror. I drunkenly applied my black eye liner around my lips and my red lip liner as an eye liner. Needless to say I looked like the devil but felt hot at the bar. I get it Julie

  16. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Her character on MF used to be okay sometimes, but this season especially she’s been morphed into yet another nagging shrew who has had the world inflicted upon her. I don’t understand why television shows think audiences want to watch some lady yell at her husband all of the time. She also seems to re-iterate that some event or project is her ‘one thing’ about once a fortnight. Oh well, that show’s been mired in ‘WASP: shrill-er, shirt: shrunken-er, queen: scream-y homosex-ier!’ territory for a while, so…

She’s kinda strange in interviews but I’d much rather share an afternoon with Julie Bowen than Claire Dunphy.

  17. albeli says:

Odd, because Bowen is gorgeous/beautiful. Aniston is attractive, but not in the same way. I would kill to have Aniston’s bod, though.

  18. OtherChris says:

Even at her peak, Jennifer Anniston was never beautiful. She has a great body and great hair, but without all that money poured into her, she could easily look mannish.

I suppose it’s easy to say another woman is beautiful when in fact, you actually are beautiful and far prettier than her.

  19. Anna says:

Actually, you have to be drunk to think Jen is beautiful.

  20. Isa says:

That’s nice of Julie to say since she is more beautiful than JA.

  21. original kate says:

i don’t think aniston in gorgeous (too beachy for me) but i think she’s made the most of her unconventional looks, much the way streisand, SJP or even someone like tina fey have embraced their quirks. jen looks better with glasses – they help balance out her jaw and give her face some character. also, her body is smoking hot.

on a side not i don’t know who julie bowen is but the kid (her son?) in the fireman’s outfit is really cute.

  22. Gal says:

Roxy and others – you do realize she’s an actress and playing a part right? It sounds like you don’t like Julie for playing a character you don’t like. If Julie made you not like her character, then she was probably doing what the writers wanted her to do. It’s television—it’s not real.

  23. DogBoy says:

    I’d take Julie over Jen.

  24. Kim says:

Julie Bowen is being kind because she is WAYYYYY prettier than Jennifer Aniston. Jennifer, after all the nose jobs, tanning, hiltes, botox, fillers, etc is still average looking at best.

  25. JenJen says:

    HUH?

  26. Dea says:

If she gave those remarks for JA, I think she really has a poor taste. JA is full of plastic surgeries and botox and there is nothing natural about her beauty to adore. JA is a woman who is addicted to just keep her body in shape and not look in depth at the outside world. A woman that spents several hours a week on her body image instead of doing charity work. I am aware she does some charity but I am so convinced that her PR people tell her to do it not that she loves it more than she loves her appearance as in all her interviews all she speaks is about yoga drinking smart water, and blah, blah and nothing mature for a 42 years old woman.

  27. Kiska says:

I think Julie is much more attractive than Jen. Plus, she is hilarious!

  28. Samigirl says:

My dad literally thinks Julie is the most beautiful woman in the world. Says she’s way hotter than SV, who, in my opinion, should have been voted the sexiest woman alive over JLO this year. But, I digress. She is hot. Has an amazing body too. I agree that she’s prettier and seems more accesible over JA.

  29. Mshuffleupagus says:

I think think Julie meant to say that you have to drink a lot to sleep with Jennifer Aniston.

  30. Mrs Odie 2 says:

Jennifer Aniston has one of the hottest bodies in Hollywood and great hair, but she does not have a pretty face. Julie Bowen is pretty, but women envy her body. Men think it’s too thin, hard, and masculine.

  31. kira says:

I really like Modern Family and Julie Bowen is pretty. Sophia Vergara, tho . . . hot, hot, hot. I think Aniston is pretty, but lately, her face looks really puffy and strange? It seems like she gave in to the Hollywood botox trend. Blech . . .

  32. Blondie says:

I think JA has an attractive quality. But beautiful she is not. I compare her to Sarah Jessica Parker. And as Peter Griffin once so eloquently stated about SJP “her face looks like a foot”.

  33. Sakyiwaa says:

Julie looks beautiful in that pic with the black dress. i’m not into any of her shows though. Jen & Julie both look accessible…pretty on the regular.

what kind of publicity is this for their movie though? Especially the opening line on Jen…

    “…protect her…”

    Protect her from what…?

  34. WhiteNoise says:

Aniston looks so much more interesting with glasses. They give her face definition and make her look far less bland.

  35. sandy says:

i agree, Julie is more pretty, with more going on, she was being nice with her comment about Jen,like most people are, but they forget we have our own eyes and ears, but still a nice gesture on her part, very classy. I’m trying to do the same, so I’ll stop at that. lol

  36. Newbie says:

As for all of her faults (which are mostly projected by rumor), Aniston may or may be one thing or another, but she is pretty. She’s not a classic pretty. She’s different. And she’s 42 years old. I think we could give her a break there. People in the industry continue to talk of her kindness, so I think that says something.

  37. Anti-icon says:

Both of these women are quite beautiful….and the same “type” which is the kind I like. The same kind that tends to do well in all professional endeavors, not just acting.

  38. sorrento says:

I think they’re both ordinary, certainly not beautiful

  39. SolitaryAngel says:

@alexandra: LMFAO–that’s too funny! You should have a blog; Escapades of the Drunk & Sexy!

Julie is MUCH prettier than JA, and I like her; not so much her character in Lost (she screwed around on Jack), but I may have to watch this show you’re all talking about….

  40. Caz says:

Julie is waay more attractive than poor Jen because she actually has something to say. Notice in any article about JA she doesn’t string a coherent paragraph or two together…she doesn’t have anything to say and has no personality. Her agent is trying very hard. The articles are all written about her. Even Goopy Gwyn makes a better interviewee.

  41. Micki says:

I guess if I’m not drunk and look into the mirror at a completely false angle she’d be downright ugly then…and the little thing that everyone wants to date her…well NOW I need a drink

  42. Jennifer was really beautiful back in the early seasons of “Friends”…Age takes away the beauty unfortunately…It’s true, you have to get drunk to see your self as beautiful as you were… 🙂

  43. Forelithe says:

A great but somewhat bassackwards compliment.

  44. Pixie Stix says:

I like both of them so i am looking forward to Horrible Bosses. I’ve met JA in real life & she is down to earth & didn’t want a fuss made over her. Love Julie Bowen because she is sharp. She told US Weekly recently that she doesn’t trust mean girls — loved that.

  45. Anon says:

“As much as Jennifer Aniston is hated by some on the blogs, the fact is people in the industry have nothing but positive things to say about her, facts are facts, gossip is make-believe. I prefer to believe the people with first-hand knowledge rather than folks who don’t know her and have a possible agenda.”

@Ell and Newbie – couldn’t agree with you more! People hiding behind their computers can tear down her looks all they want, fact is she is far from unattractive. You don’t have to personally find her stunning, but the fact is she wouldn’t be where she is if the majority of the public didn’t think she was so.

And moreover, Bowen makes a great point here: that there is never a bad word said about Jennifer by anyone who has come into contact with her, worked with her, is in the industry, etc. She is very well liked by those who would know, and everything else written about her is simply tabloid fodder and speculation, mostly by those who have a hate-on for her.

  46. Camille says:

Ahhh but the thing is Julie, Aniston is *not* beautiful. I’d call her handsome or something before I’d ever consider her even pretty at most. *shrugs*

Julie Bowen is actually far, far, far more attractive than Aniston could ever hope to be.

As for that article, how hilarious was the whole thing (and I’m not just talking about Julie’s comments). LOL!

  47. AmityvilleHouse says:

Ell and others, there have been plenty of people who have come out and said how mean-spirited and self-absorbed Aniston is. She is not universally loved in Hollywood at all. Many in the industry have had bad things to say about her; Tate Donovan for one, a couple of Directors, the actor who called her a sport bang, the other one who was less impressed with Aniston’s acting when he worked with her, the one who wrote a book about her former friend etc… It is completely dishonest and deceitful to peddle the lie that there ‘never’ is a bad word for her. It is patently untrue except to those who CHOOSE to believe otherwise because they refuse to believe she is less that 100% loved and perfect.

  48. Isa says:

Never a bad word? Except from Jay Mohr.

Besides, is it really that difficult to be nice? Even if you’re faking it. I should know, I fake it all the time at work. You should hear all the things I think and don’t say.

But it is possible that JA is truly a nice person! I’m just saying that being nice is part of her good girl or girl next door image and she certainly wouldn’t want to do anything to taint that. Nowadays everything she does is reported on!

  49. hoganbcmj says:

I was going to say the same thing: She’s just as beautiful in her own way. I remember thinking as much when I saw her on Lost as Jack’s wife.

  50. Flan says:

“People want to work with her, protect her, be her or date her”

None of the above, sorry. Never understood her appeal, I always liked Angie a lot more.

  51. The Other Katherine says:

I don’t care for Jennifer Aniston’s usual onscreen and tabloid persona, but I suspect she would actually be a ton of fun to work with. I really wish she hadn’t messed with her face so much – she looked really great about 5-10 years ago and would still look great in the face if she had had less work done. (Her body is, obviously, unimpeachable.)

Julie Bowen is one of those darling tiny women who makes me nervous because I’m afraid that IRL I might accidentally damage her by, you know, gesturing too big and knocking her over. I’m sure she’s actually totally fit and tough, but she still has that china figurine look. I do enjoy watching her, though. Very expressive eyes.

  52. crumbcake says:

whaaat? This woman is WAY more beautiful than Jennifer Aniston–hands down, no contest. If anything, you’d have to drink a lot of booze to think that it was the other way around. Nice of hear to be complimentary to her less attractive (and probably less talented) costar.

  53. Newbie says:

@Amityvillhouse: Tate Donovan nearly married her. I wouldn’t trust someone who may or may not have hard feelings toward an ex. Just my opinion. The “others” that you quoted…who are they, exactly? Do you have names? I’m not here to discredit you, but I honestly haven’t heard all that negativity.
As for Josh Hopkins calling her a “sport f**k”, well…it’s not really a diss if she felt the same way. And correct me if I’m wrong, but was that a comment to the press or was that a tabloid rumor?

  54. tracking says:

They’re both gorgeous. JB, though more classically pretty, has a more typical look of the very pretty girl/mom next door. JA looks more unique, in my mind in a similar way that Angelina Jolie looks unique. I’m not stirring the pot–I simply mean unique in the sense that I can’t recall seeing anyone on the street who looks like either.

  55. Janna says:

I get what she is saying. Jen is cute not gorgeous, so you think maybe you could look like her. But in person I bet she is gorgeous because Jen has an amazing figure and knows how to dress, always looks nicely put together, but effortlessly, and has some of the best hair I have ever seen on a woman. Jen’s whole package is very striking, even though her face is just cute.

  56. really says:

love Modern Family’s Julie Bowen …….she is the best!!!! hands down, yes Julie is wayyyyyyyyyyyy prettier than Jennifer!!!

  57. Isa says:

    Newbie- Jay Mohr.
Also, her ex roommate from when she first started off as an actress had some interesting things to say about her. JA supposedly got her fired.

There may or may not be others. But these are the two that I remembered off the top of my head.
She may be a nice person, just didn’t get along with those two people. Who knows.

  58. AmityvilleHouse says:

Newbie, Tate Donovan nearly married her, until she got involved with Brad Pitt. Whilst she was still seeing Tate….

  59. AmityvilleHouse says:

As for the others they have all been ascertained especially her former friend who wrote the book.

  60. Me says:

She is an actress. She paid to lie.

  61. kira says:

I remember the Jay Mohr thing. Apparently, she openly belittled him in front of the cast/crew because she was angry the producers didn’t choose a hotter, more famous actor as her co-star. And, she is friends with that great big meanie, Chelsea Handler. But, I’m sure they ONLY talk about puppies and rainbows because Jen is the sweetest person EVAH. 🙂

Who knows what she’s really like behind closed doors?? I’ve never bought the whole “sweetheart” act, personally.

  62. Newbie says:

@Isa: thanks for the name. I’ll have to dig that up!
@Amityvillehouse: that’s just one more reason not to listen to the rantings of a burned ex.

  63. MaudeLebowski says:

Julie must surely realise that she’s a million times prettier. If not, get the chick some spectacles.

  64. Anon says:

Mohr never directly said anything negative about her – he made comments about an actress he previously worked with and people attributed them to be about Jennifer. Maybe he was speaking about her, but no one knows for certain. What is known – Mohr is notoriously difficult as a person and to work with – he has even admitted to this himself. So even assuming she wasn’t befriending him on set, its questionable what he might have done to incur this.

The “former roommate” that others are bringing up – again this is a woman seeking publicity for a book who spoke about a former roommate undermining her – never using Jennifer’s name. Once again, people attribute the comments to be about Jennifer, but in fact the author herself came out and said this was not true. Besides, there is no evidence that Jennifer was friends with this woman or ever even had a roommate when she started out in NY – she only stayed a couple of years after high school before moving to LA, and lived with her mother during that time.

And Tate – has never said anything bad about Jennifer. The closest thing to this was that he said she liked staying at nicer hotels and he liked roughing it when indicating their differences in compatibility/personality. She was long split up from him before she started seeing Pitt, and it has only recently been claimed otherwise – a rumor started only by people on the web who dislike her and are reaching to paint her in a negative light. She and Tate are still on good terms in fact with him speaking nicely about her in an interview only a couple of months ago.

And Hopkins – the “comment” being attributed to him is from a tabloid. There was no proof they ever were anything more than friends, and given her pal Cox’s continued closeness with him it’s unlikely he ever made such a remark or treated Jennifer poorly. Furthermore, Hopkins himself has repeatedly denied ever making such a comment, dating her, etc.

When I am talking about people never saying bad things about her – I am talking about actual comments from people on record. There is none. What there is on record is a continuous stream of comments painting her as nice, sweet, warm, friendly, fun, etc. Some might say, why shouldn’t she be like this, and to an extent this is true. The point though is that she is – many in her position are not.

  65. AmityvilleHouse says:

“@Amityvillehouse: that’s just one more reason not to listen to the rantings of a burned ex.” Excuses, excuses. And if that were true, nobody would have listened to scorned and burned Aniston over Brad, but they did, and fell for her lies and manipulations hook line and sinker.

  66. kira says:

Please . . . you could spend a few seconds googling it and see for yourself. It’s obvious that Mohr was talking about Aniston. He’s said it more than one interview. And, Aniston’s PR team–which goes after anyone who says anything about her–never denied it.

1: ELLE: Tell me about your most awkward interaction with a female celebrity?

JM: Being on the set of a movie where the leading woman was unhappy with my presence and made it clear from day one. I hadn’t done many movies, and even though they screen-tested some pretty famous guys, I somehow snaked into the leading role. The actress said, “No way! You’ve got to be kidding me!” Loudly. Between takes. To other actors on set. I would literally go to my mom’s house and cry.

ELLE: As luck would have it, I happen to be on the Internet Movie Database right now. The only film that could possibly fit this description is 1997’s Picture Perfect, with Jennifer Aniston. That’s it, right?

JM: I will never, ever answer that.

    ***********************************
#2 ESPN: So you starred in “Picture Perfect” with Jennifer Aniston. Hey, Jay, what was it like to work with Jennifer Aniston?

Mohr: I really loved working with Tom Cruise.

    ****************************************

I find it funny how her fans are always looking for excuses–she can’t be anything but “sweet”–anyone who says otherwise is an awful person. LOL 🙂

  67. The Observer says:

If she has never heard a bad word said
about Aniston, she must not have a radio
or television in her house and must live
in a cave high up on a deserted mountain.
