Angelina & Brad’s child care costs: $1 million per kid, per year?

fp_7011148_pitt_jolie_last_fp7_04_13

This story comes on the heels of the non-story that the Jolie-Pitt children are being raised by an educating, bilingual nanny army. At the time, I thought “meh” because we all know that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have nannies, and having high hiring standards just seems like a smart choice. Now InTouch Weekly is dialing up the Scandal-Meter by getting into specific (alleged) numbers for the cost of the Jolie-Pitts’ childcare. InTouch (via The Mail) thinks that Angelina and Brad are paying about $1 million per child, per year. Let’s see the breakdown, shall we?

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie spend a staggering $10 million (£6.1 million) on childcare for their brood, it was claimed today. The superstar couple rack up huge child care, travel and food bills every month looking after their six kids. As well as spending $5 million (£3.1 million) on private jets, the Hollywood pair splashed out $900,000 (£541,000) last year on a nanny for each of the children.

Feeding adopted Maddox, nine, Pax, seven, Zahara, six, Shiloh, four, and biological twins Knox and Vivienne, two, meanwhile costs around $36,000 (£22,000 ). And having a nanny for each of them costs up to $900,000 (£541,000).

A source told a US magazine In Touch: ‘They spend more than a million dollars on private tutors who travel around the world with them. They [even] once spent $500,000 (£301,000) for one stay at the Waldorf [Astoria hotel in New York].’

The couple also spent an estimated several million dollars on first-class airfare and hotel bills for the youngsters. Representatives for Pitt, 47, and Jolie, 35, were not available for comment. The news comes just days after it was revealed that the couple were on the hunt for a new nanny.

The pair are apparently prepared to pay a £90,000 a year salary for the lucky applicant. They will also be required to travel between California, New Orleans and France, as well as other film locations around the world.

As well as a degree in education or child development, Brad and Angelina are demanding the nanny should speak at least two different languages, as well as the native tongues of their children.

Brad’s parents, Bill and Jane, recently moved in to the family’s Chateau Miraval estate in France to help the couple raise their large brood – meaning the nannying position may not be a lifetime role.

A source told The Sun earlier this week: ‘The whole family is going to move there as soon as the renovations are done. At the moment they have six nannies – one for each of the kids – and the plan is to get rid of the helpers and rely on Bill and Jane. The annex they will live in is an old building which used to be used as a dovecote. It’s big enough to have a sitting room, kitchen and a couple of bedrooms. It will make a lovely little cottage for them.’

[From The Mail]

Let’s see… other costs: kids’ clothing, per year is allegedly $100,000. $5 million spent on private jets in a year (why not?) and $600 a day on cars. Oh, and each kid gets a $7000 birthday party. And don’t forget the high cost of gerbil maintenance. That could easily run you a cool million per year, adjusting for the requisite gerbils-of-doom cost of living adjustment. The gerbils know too much. But it’s easier to pay them off and maintain them rather than kill them off.

And no one is discussing the cost of Zahara’s empress maintenance!

Why does Brad suddenly look like he’s channeling Kurt Cobain?

  2. inessa says:

Please, who cares? It’s their money they can do whatever they want with it.

  3. N.D. says:

Their nannies earn 150K per year? Wow.

  4. lin234 says:

Yea, it’s their money. In order for them to have some semblance of privacy, there is a very steep price, especially with the type of fame they have.

They make their money and at least they contribute to society. Doesn’t matter how they choose to spend their money on their kids.

  5. Sue says:

These child care/nanny BS stories are getting boring and old fast. Funny how these tabloid mag’s never say anything about Heidi Klum 4 to 5 nannies that she is photograph with all the time or even Gwen Stefani 3 or so nannies that she photograph with but I guess they won’t sell the magazines the Jolie-Pitt name will.

  6. N.D. says:

And 5mil per year on private jets means roughly 1000 flight hours, that’s crazy huge number, about 100 transatlantic flights per year. They don’t travel that much as a family and their job related travels are paid by studios.

This whole calculation is so BS.

  7. Maritza says:

Really, I doubt they spend that much on clothes because it looks to me like they wear hand me downs between them. Although with so many nannies and the amount of traveling they do it no wonder they spend so much. I think they could do with 3 nannies 2 kids per nanny. If they keep adopting and with their lifestyle they will have to keep working and forget about retiring.

  8. bite me says:

so the tabloids now have access to the jolie-pitts personal financial information, while they at it, could they publish their personal tax return, i will be waiting.

  9. Mia says:

Was it necessary for them to divide the children into adopted vs. biological? Do adopted children eat more than biological ones? Ugh…so ridiculous. Their money, their kids.

  10. TRT says:

It’s their money they should use it how they want.
If I had that kind of money I would spend it on my kids too.

  11. clorismetchum says:

yikes. NOT WORTH IT. i’d put the kids up for adoption and save the money if i were her.

  12. Micki says:

What is the problem? If Oksana Grigorieva insists that $40.000 a month is not enough for maintaining the lifestyle she and Lucia got accustomed to and everybody is fine with it why should there be a rage wave abou what Jolie-Pitt are doing with their money?

  13. guesty says:

    That is amazing.

  14. mln76 says:

Yeah I love this family but who really cares about this ….It just seems like more desperation from the tabs to drum up stories about them.

  15. Jane Q. Doe says:

That sounds a little high, but who knows? I doubt Brad and Angie sit down with their accountant and break it down by kid. And I agree with the above poster – once the adoption is finalized, they’re just your kid. No ‘adopted’ necessary. Besides, it’s not like everyone in the world doesn’t know who’s who!
One major cost they didn’t include though was security, which must set the J-P’s back tremendously.

  16. tapioca says:

Erm… aren’t Brad’s parents in their 70s now? I hope this is BS, because 6 under-10s might be a bit much, however “young at heart” they are!

@mIcki: I recall quite a lot of people had a problem with Oksana and her $40k – specifically that she “deserved” to be abused for being such a gold-digger.

  17. Kaboom says:

Good for them, they’re doing more for the economy than the whole of congress together.

  18. Nanea says:

InTouch being out of touch again.

As someone said about the private jets, $ 600 a day for cars? Really? How far are they going?

Don’t the people who come up with these sums ever look at the joint income?

They have to pay taxes from that, they give away lots, and then they spend (allegedly) millions and millions on houses, and whatnot?

A few years ago one of those ridiculous publications came up with that mega yacht they had bought, to the tune of ~ $ 150 millions. I’ve yet to see them use it.

While I’m pretty sure they spend lots on their kids, these numbers seem a tiny bit far-fetched.

  19. V says:

When Elizabeth Taylor passed away, there was a news story saying Richard Burton nearly went bankrupt pleasing Elizabeth Taylor. When they were in love, Burton had to (and wanted to, to be fair) spoil Taylor with jewlry and exotic overseas holidays. They were travelling everywhere all over the world. The story reminds many of Brad Pitt’s situation.

No matter how much they make, the money can always burn faster than one can imagine. Think of Nicholas Cage. How Cage became bankrupt is beyond belief.

  20. lucy2 says:

While this is more typical tabloid fiction, I don’t doubt that they’re living expenses are very high.

  21. Solveig says:

Ok, they spend 36k$ per year to feed 6 children? It amazes me that they aren’t heavely obese. Meh.

  22. Miss Marie says:

Can’t wait to see how these kids adapt to the world as adults-their expectations will be very high. We’ve all seen enough of the bust out adults who are children of stars. Angelina and Brad aren’t the brightest bulbs in the world.

  23. Shay says:

They’ve got the money so why not. But don’t present them as saints. I sniff a little hypocrisy about them. At every opportunity for a photo op, Angelina flies out everywhere. You have to hand it to Angelina, she is a perfect example of an image upgrade. But I still don’t buy her act.
Those kids are going to have hefty therapy bills.

  24. Kloops says:

I don’t believe these numbers but I do think they spend a premium for excellent nannies. Good for them.

  25. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

@Solveig, I hear they only eat caviar and truffles.

  26. N.D. says:

Everyone knows those kids eat Cheetos and McDonalds and they are all healthy looking (not obese) so of those 36K per year 90% must be cook salary (whenever they bother to employ one).

  27. DGO says:

The hair dresser who does Beyonce’s weaves spoke out and said they hired her to do Zahara’s hair. That seemed like over kill to me.

  28. Kim123 says:

These kids visit refugee camps and orphanages(there are pics), they visit the Maddox Jolie Pitt Center in Cambodia. They probably appreciate how fortunate they are more than most kids because they have been exposed to poverty.I remember a lady in NOLA saying they play with her grandkids when they visit and she is lower middle class.I’ve never seen these kids wearing extravangant clothes or carrying expensive toys.InTouchweekly hasn’t had an true story about this family in years if ever. V- I find it very intersting that you say Richard Burton reminds you of Brad. Brad spends tons of money on art and motorcycles for himself.Even the lying tabloids have never suggested he spends money on diamonds for AJ.LastlY Brad’s parents are in Springfield, MO with their kids and 8 grandkids and have never moved. I read his sisters(Julie’s blog)This story is fiction. Its obvious they spend very little on clothes compared to other celebs with similar income- $40M a year+

  29. Cheyenne says:

tapioca: 6 under-10s might be a bit much
    ============================================

If you think they have problems now, fast-forward ten years when they will have SIX TEENAGERS in the house all at once.

If it was me, I think I’d check into a sanatorium until the twins turned 20.

  30. Miss Beca says:

Ugh, it bugs me SO MUCH when magazines feel the need to divide the kids into “adopted” and “biological”. In this case, they even got it wrong!

  31. Rosanna says:

I doubt they spend this much for the kids.

  32. Tazina says:

And the point is? They have money. They pay for what they want. End of story.

  33. Trouble says:

Let’s face it!!! If this story was about say…Katie holmes or gweneth Paltrow y’all would be going nuts about how ridiculous this IS! BUT it’s the mighty Jolie-Pitts( the ones the tabloids ALWAYS lie about!!! No story is EVER slightly true or possible) so of course this is utter rubbish!! It’s just funny to me how nit picky everyone is when it comes to the tabloid trash they believe! Just because you don’t like someone doesn’t make everything printed about them true and vice versa!!!
Jeeze!!! Enough already with the juvenile my celebrity is better than yours crap!!
    Whew!
End rant! ^_^ feeling much better, bye!

  34. Kelly says:

Glad to see others c/o the adopted label. I’m adopted myself and I have never been introduced as the adopted daughter! Will they still call these kids adopted when they’re in their 50’s?

  35. The Bobster says:

I guess foreign imports aren’t cheaper.

  36. carrie says:

so down-to-hearth so green(irony) but it’s their money

  37. Camille says:

    Meh. What a non story.

They are rich and can do whatever the hell they like with their money (if this story is even true). *shrugs*

  38. sandy says:

@22, Marie? who says the jolie/pitt are not the brightest bulbs? or what ever, i guess some people know them up close and personal, by looking at their accomplishments and their success, and interviews, it’s quite the opposite, just because you say something negative about someone does not mean it’s true, it’s one thing to dislike someone but quite another to out right lie about them, and yes i am a fan, but no one is perfect, but dumb does not apply to these two, sorry, try again. it’s money well spent.

  39. Louise says:

@Trouble: The reason a lot of people don’t believe all of the tabloid stories is because they’ve been false for 6 years. Over the years stories have been too ridiculous to believe. I seriously doubt the tabloids got their financial records and the numbers they give are really over the top. But if you want to believe that Brad is leaving Angelina for Jennifer Aniston, that’s your prerogative.

I don’t understand the comparison of Brad to Richard Burton. What has Brad given Angelina? She barely wears jewelry unless it’s a redcarpet event. She obviously doesn’t care about clothing. They only bought one house together(NO) and the home in France is just leased. Unless they are never seen, they barely travel unless it’s movie and charity related. As previously mentioned, Brad spends more on himself than Angelina.

  40. Katherine M. says:

What a crock! The whole thing seems entirely made up. Why would the twins need separate nannies and why would Maddox even need one? Kids aren’t watched every second of the day when they’re home – none of the kids save the 2 toddlers need that kind of watching at all. And at night they are asleep.

I can believe they have 6 nannies/babysitters/tutors on retainer to ensure they have one when they need one but I don’t believe the nonsense about one for each or even even more than one on a regular basis. I think they are trying to lump teachers & tutors into the mix for a more dramatic story.

  41. Lisa Turtle says:

    @ Kim 123

    Nice sleuth work! Kim + 1; InTouch – 0

Plus even if they spent $10 million a year, according to Angelina, she lives on a third of her income; saves a third of her income; and gives away a third of her income. If she makes between $30-40M a year, then $10M would make sense as her living expenses, and anyone with kids knows that kids are a huge part of living expenses.

  42. Newbie says:

Well, I just got off the phone with dear Angeliny, and she’s let me know that most of this is made up. They make several million per film, but the children are only allowed to eat McDonalds and Cheetos, so they save quite a bit on the whole food bill. Angel…ina cooks all the hamburgers and home-made cheetos that they could ever want at home, so there’s really no bill for chefs or bus boys out running the errands for food. Here’s her home recipe:

    Angeliny’s Special Homemade Cheetos:
    3 tsp. White flour.
    2 cans Cheez Whiz.
    2 Tbsp. orange…dye.
    1 orange.

Mix altogether in a frying pan for 5 min.

She’s a terrific cook. And as for the child-care debate, like most of you, I’ve seen her with those children and I have it on the best authority that they most certainly do NOT spend that sum on their children. They don’t buy their children any toys or treats or new clothes or anything like that. And they certainly don’t take them on trips, so that cuts down the living expenses as well. The other night I was sleeping in the guestroom right off of the children’s room (they all share a room to save on the expenses), and I personally heard Brad send their one nanny home for the evening. She’s employed for 1 hr, one day a week. Though just exactly HOW Brad…erm…sent her off for the night I probably shouldn’t say. She left the meager cottage that we all share, and all was quiet. Thus, the high costs quoted above are utter nonsense.

  43. Sakyiwaa says:

    BS Tabloids.

  44. geekychic says:

i doubt it. i think jolie is too smart to squander money so easily.
i do think they are spending big, but i am sure that the majority of money is invested in the future of their children, especially considering the fact that they will never get out of the public eye. and the fact that, by just being jolie-pitt, their parents condemned them to expensive lifestyle.

  45. Emma says:

    Can they adopt me?

  46. Excellent post. I used to be checking continuously this blog and I am impressed! Extremely useful info specially the ultimate part 🙂 I care for such information a lot. I used to be looking for this particular information for a long time. Thanks and best of luck.

  47. I’ve been browsing online more than 3 hours lately, yet I never found any attention-grabbing article like yours. It?s pretty value enough for me. In my opinion, if all web owners and bloggers made just right content material as you probably did, the web will be much more useful than ever before.
