Sparkles denies that the K-Stew romance is studio-manufactured

Robert Pattinson has an excellent new interview and photo shoot in the June issue of Elle UK. The photographs are by Hedi Slimane, and I LOVE them. Sparkles sometimes comes across like he’s trying too hard to give a James Dean vibe, but I think these photos strike the appropriate balance of Sparkles/James Dean fetishism. Just like actresses are always pulling a Marilyn, men are always going to try for Dean, but in Sparkles’ case, it feels like he’s still doing his own thing.

As for the interview, you can read the entire transcript of it here, at one of Sparkles’ many fansites (they are so on top of things, always!). The piece is called “The Lost Boy” and there are some really good quotes. Here are the highlights:

Pattinson on older women: “Every girl I went out with in my teens was older than me. My first girlfriend was 26, I was 17. Women who were older always seemed more exciting.” Because they knew more? “I guess so. I used to think I was a bit of a bad-ass when I was younger. I liked that it annoyed people how much younger I was. I liked walking into a room with a woman and people looking at us and thinking: they do not look right together.”

Pattinson on his own laziness. “My ideal job would be one day a week. When I first started acting, I’d get one job a year that lasted three months, and then I’d do nothing the rest of the time but I’d have enough money to survive. I’d read all the papers every day, get in a lot of DVDs… That was great.” He breaks into a wide-cheekboned smile, eyes heavy-lidded, gentle and slightly feline; like James Dean, without the self-hatred.

He loves chicken kebab: He’s 24 now, but, perhaps ironically, given his vampiric alter-ego’s perpetual teenagedhood, seems younger. His face lights up when he sees his favourite lunch has been delivered to the studio: chicken kebab. “I’ve got simple tates.” He’s a sweet, goofy boy, quick to laugh and smile, though he doesn’t seem particularly happy. But he is, he says, more content than he used to be. He used to write music as a release (his compositions appeared on the Twilight soundtrack) but hasn’t felt the need for a while. “I have to be incredibly depressed to write songs and I’m not. What makes me want to write songs is when I wake up crying. I would have no idea why I was crying, but it made me sad for myself… ” And he bursts out laughing.

On perhaps doing a play in London: “I’d really really love to do a play in London,” he says. “But I’d just be afraid it would turn into an ‘NSync concert. Or people would come along expecting it to be something like Twilight. From the little amount of theatre I’ve done, I know that usually you can feel a push from the audience, who have come along wanting the show to succeed. But when I go to premieres, it’s more like the crowd is pulling, really wanting something from you. I always feel completely drained afterwards. It would be very strange and exhausting to have that kind of experience every night on stage.”

He doesn’t believe the Twihard thing is really about HIM: He says he’s simply a cipher that makes the frenzy permissible. “It’s very clear that people have gone there for an excuse to go crazy. You can’t stand around in the street and go crazy but get together with your friends at a Twilight thing and you have an environment where you can.”

Small vanities: A little vanity comes with the territory, though and Pattinson prepares for shirtless scenes by “going to the gym for four hours a day. I don’t eat at all expect for protein shakes. But I don’t understand how you could maintain that all your life. After the scene’s done, I don’t work out again. It’s a ridiculous idea that you’re not a proper actor unless you have a six-pack.”

He doesn’t own a home: “I came close to buying a house in Los Angeles, but 20 minutes from signing the contract I freaked out. So I don’t own a house or really have a home. It can drive you a bit crazy not having any kind of anchor. Hopefully it will settle down some time soon but for the next few years, I’m going to be filming all over the place. I thought I would get a dog. Then wherever the dog was would kind of be my home.”

On his dog, and his girlfriend: He adopted Bear, a German shepherd-pitbull crossbreed (“100 pet cent mutt”), from a dog shelter in Louisiana: a canine death row. “Bear was two days away from euthanasia. We thought he was traumatized by his near-death experience.” Who’s we? Was this a solo rescue mission, or was Pattinson accompanied by a certain elfin co-star? He has long been linked with Kristen Stewart, but adopting a dog together would surely mean they were getting serious. “Well…” He looks flustered. Are you going to be a single parent to Bear? “Um, yes, I guess so.” The rumours about their impending marriage aren’t true, then? “No they’re not. I was told I was meant to be getting married somewhere called ‘Napa Valley’. It sounded quite cool. Maybe I will get married there.”

Whether his relationship is a studio fabrication: “No,” he says, kindly but firmly. “Oh no. I’d love it if they tried. If studio tried to get involved with my personal life, I could start messing around with them in return… No. There’s nothing nefarious going on, I just don’t like people taking my picture. It’s not nice when your life becomes someone else’s news. Even when you’re having a good time and someone takes a picture and days, “Look at them having a good time!” I feel like, it’s not your good time.” So he isn’t working to a careful PR strategy? “People think we have people organizing everything, that it’s all a publicity stunt. It’s not. There is no magical entourage – you’re just a person on your own. You have to figure it out.”

On getting away with stuff: “It just isn’t possible to get away with that stuff with camera phones around. I can’t do it. If I have four beers, I’m destroyed the entire next day. I just don’t understand how these stars used to go on benders all the time.” He pauses. “Cocaine. Must be.”

Home life in England: He sends every script to his parents to read (“They always come up with good advice because they think differently from the industry. My dad compares every script to Jaws and Superman…”) and still misses his childhood pet, a West Highland terrier called Patty Pattinson – “and her middle name was Pat.”

He really loves that elephant named Tai. “I saw her recenly and she remembered me; at least I think she did. She had a new headpiece on and I said “Nice hat, Tai” and her trunk went up to her head. She’s amazing.”

What his money buys: When asked what the greatest extravagance his not-insignificant pay packet has brought him, he says, “It sounds ridiculous but my dog was sick with a puppy disease called parvo and it was such a relief being able to go into the vet and say, ‘I want the best, immediately.'”

More about Water for Elephants: “I looked at Gary Cooper films, at his stance and stillness. Camera technique wasn’t what it is, and you used to have to stay really still. Acting was much more about your voice. Also, my character is a vet, so there’s a calmness to him, as there is with anyone who’s good around animals.” He and Reese Witherspoon crackle on screen; by his standards, the decade between them is nothing. “She isn’t really much older than me at all,” he says gallantly.

In the end: “I never get what I want,” he sighs at one point. His puppy is sick, he doesn’t have a home and, reading between the lines, his love life is looking distinctly grey. The mournful edge in his personality is what makes him so desirable, though – and so romantic. Thank goodness this multi-millionaire matinee idol isn’t as pleased with himself as he should be: he’d be unbearable. As it is, he’s still an outsider, soft and pliable and modest, still waiting to come out of his shell.

Sigh… he really is dreamy, isn’t he? I will always maintain this – whether or not Sparkles is actually a talented actor (questionable), he will continue to work and work in the industry because he consistently builds up goodwill, and because he comes across as a very genuine and sweet celebrity. Also, note to conspiracy theorists: do you buy Sparkles’ denial of a studio-manufactured romance with K-Stew? I do. I think he just loves her, because he loves surly bitches. When he meets me, Kristen is going to fall by the wayside.

Oh, nice shots! Love the styling and the mood.

  2. kayla says:

“Sigh… he really is dreamy, isn’t he?”

No. My idea of dreamy isn’t greasy and sour-faced. Then again Kaiser you are a fan of dirty and pasty.

  3. kazoo says:

i think it’s manufactured. he’s pretty & seems sweet, though.

i hope she fades into oblivion.

  4. vanessa says:

The more I see him and read about him, the cuter he gets to me. I really didn’t see all the fuss when he was in Harry Potter and I’ve watched the twilight movies and he just didn’t do it for me. Maybe because he’s getting older, he’s looking manlier. But I don’t think his r/ship with Kstew is real, they don’t really look like they are a couple in love.

  5. Myra says:

He’s full of shit. Unless he and Kristen decided to pretend to be together on their own and that’s why he’s denying studio involvement.

  6. mln76 says:

He’s adorable, and at this point the Twilight conspiracy theorists won’t believe anything but what they want to believe, but K-Stew and him have obvious chemistry despite the crapfest that is Twilight.

  7. Delta Juliet says:

All I took out of this is he doesn’t mind a woman 10 years older than him….sweet! 😀

  8. Quest says:

Loving the pics, it is time Patz get himself a real woman and not the stewy girl he has been dealing with. We’ll see if it last after the Twilight final

  9. flourpot says:

What’s up with that top picture? It looks like an alien’s about to burst out of his chest.

  10. mia girl says:

Having seen/read lots of interviews with both of them, neither Pattison nor Stewart strikes me as the type to agree to carry out some big charade. Really, as much as there might be theories or circumstantial evidence to support this “PR” thing, I just don’t see these two ultimately being up for doing it and pretending for so many years now (what are we in year 3)?

  11. LeManda says:

He was great in Water for Elephants! It was nice to see him without all the stupid twilight make-up on. A few of the ladies I went to the movie with who normally hate him even commented how, after seeing that movie, they were starting to see what all the fuss was about.

  12. Beth says:

His interviews are always awesome. If ASkars did as many interviews as Rob, I’d be one blissful woman. I’ll take a Rob and Alex sandwich, please!

  13. Beth says:

Do you seriously expect him to admit to PR?
Please what chemistry do people see between them? She insults him in interviews, is embarrassed by him but needs him to stay in the media and both ping the gaydar.
For a private guy he had no problem faking that ridiculous failed kiss at the premiere of his latest film surrounded by the paps, he still contradicts his words with his actions. If this was Jake Gyllenhaal people would have no problem calling him out on it.
The fact that the interviewer even asks him about the PR rumours should tell you everything. What other celeb has recently been asked if their relationship is fake?

  14. Rhiley says:

I love what he said about his puppy. He isn’t really my type but he does seem very sweet and down to earth.

  15. Liana says:

He does nothing for me. Absolutely nothing.

  16. Gary says:

Summit(the Twilight studio) chartered their private jet to bring Kristen Stewart to the premiere of Water for Elephants in NY even though she had to work the next day in Vancouver. She was accompanied by some studio executives. They flew her back that same night. Her job was to be seen with Robert but not to be too obvious like the last time when she walked the red carpet. They made sure they are seen leaving the premiere together and the paps were called and told where and when they would come out.
    Mission accomplished.

  17. Ell says:

    Good interview, he’s a sweetheart.

@kazoo – he’s definitely NOT manufactured. Pre-hollywood days he starred in a tv screenplay my friend wrote, she only had good things to say.

  18. Cheyenne says:

I really like this guy. He seems very grounded and refreshingly free of attitude.

  19. mia girl says:

@Gary Wow, sounds just as intricate as the mission into Abbottabad

I’m surprised you don’t have the flight manifest, the names of the Summit executives and the precise orders given to Miss Stewart on how to act “not too obvious”. Did that include pretending to not want to kiss your fake boyfriend, even though you are trying to make people believe it is your boyfriend? Wow, that is some hardcore Jedi mind-trick PR stuff!

And yes, it is suspicious that the paps knew to be at the back entrance of the theater where the premier was, particularly when it appears there were areas cordoned off for fans. Those paps must have been tipped off! Oh and at the after party too, I mean, why would paps be outside the restaurant where the party was being held?!

Seriously though, who knows if these two are together, but honestly it’s post like yours that make me think of Occam ’s razor… “do not increase, beyond what is necessary, the number of entities required to explain anything”

  20. hairball says:

@mia girl: Ok, it was b*tchy, but people have said bitch comments towards my posts – that was pretty funny.

Just roll with it people, if it’s not impacting you personally, why the rage either way if they’re dating?? It’s not worth your mental and physical health.

  21. sharylmj says:

he seems so sweet and goofy.. I love his interviews. He is definately growing on me and I really don’t care if he and Kristen are together or not.

  22. xxodettexx says:

these comments basically sold me on liking him:

He really loves that elephant named Tai. “I saw her recenly and she remembered me; at least I think she did. She had a new headpiece on and I said “Nice hat, Tai” and her trunk went up to her head. She’s amazing.”

What his money buys: When asked what the greatest extravagance his not-insignificant pay packet has brought him, he says, “It sounds ridiculous but my dog was sick with a puppy disease called parvo and it was such a relief being able to go into the vet and say, ‘I want the best, immediately.’”

[i just love men that love animals!!]

  23. Newbie says:

I still don’t see how their relationship is fake. There hasn’t been a whole lot of rumor about how they can’t stand each other but stay together for the money…etc. And as much as I HATE her acting, I think she *seems* like a badass chick who doesn’t like doing all of the same PR crap that other actresses seek out. And as far as I’m concerned, every interview I read of Pattinson’s makes me really like him. Seriously, this interview was adorable and straight forward. It’s amazing that someone with his sort of fame hasn’t let it go directly to his head. And I’m no twihard fan by any stretch.

  24. Geekylove says:

I love kstew, and as i said, Kaiser, you’re starting to sound Like twi-mom. No offense, but check their sites-they are full of comments Like yours ( back in the day when the are/aren’t they was still fresh).
I think he is too sweet, but if he gets a good Career in acting, that would be a blasphemy to all the talented young actors.
I Like the was she acts, but i am the rare one, i know.

  25. Geekylove says:

Oh, and one thing that bugs me: interviews are always morphing him in a broody, lost little boy. Poor poor Sparkles. Come on, he’s 25, he’s educated and of he was do naive, be’d be over by now. I’d much rather see him outside of the “i have nothing, i am so lonely, i am so sad( pictures!!! I actually thought these were old, from two years ago), i am so gentle..blablah” profile.

  26. nora says:

some of you take your conspiracy theories way too far, you sound insane. And the sad thing is I bet you post these theories on every site that allows you to comment. Go get a hobby, or better yet read a nancy drew novel so you see how real sleuthing is done.

  27. kazoo says:

    @ell, i didn’t mean him, i meant their relationship.

  28. Gary says:

It’s so easy to sell showmances to people like you here. You don’t want to believe how much these actors and actresses, regardless what they say in interviews, would be ready to do for the money and fame. Anyone who wants to work in films and Hollywood wants fame and since HW was founded relationships between actors have been staged. That never stopped.
From what I see only women comment here and they tend to be more invested in their favourite celebrities’ personal lives than they would admit.
The last thing I’ve got to say, if Kristen Stewart didn’t want to get noticed at the premiere and is so private as she and Pattinson claim to be the security would have managed to get them out of the building without the fans or the paps knowing it. Also the timing of “outing”, at the premiere of a film is nothing but publicity and you can call me a liar, hater whatever.

  29. Reality says:

I really don’t think there’s any other answer he could have given. “Uh, yes, you got me. It’s just a contractual fauxmance for the twilight fans. We’re both gay!”

    Please.

  30. jemshoes says:

Me too, Kaiser – I also believe Rob’s denial. Co-stars of a franchise as big as this end up hating each other or else being supportive of one another through the craziness, and I think the latter is true of Rob and Kristen.

  31. Vee says:

I really like the guy. He is genuine and honest and his acting in Water for Elephants was good! Oh, about the PR – it’s never been true. And those that spend time making up crazy conspiracy theories are nuts!

  32. argirl says:

I completely believe their relationship is fake. They will never admit it. I expect to see the wrap up of relationship around the last movie. It might even be shortly before so that people can really analyze their every expression and body language at the final premiere. That would be some extreme publicity!

  33. nora says:

dear “gary:” You’re conflating a number of different issues, sweetheart. A showmance never lasts longer than one film-that’s why people go along with them, it’s a short term situation. A bearding situation is the only thing that would justify a five movie long business arrangement. Now before you start telling me one of them is gay, that’s certainly an option. But so is the fact that two young people who may be straight too and are both attractive and are stuck working long hours together and end up bumping uglies often too. Secondly, a legitimate relationship can still be used for promotional purposes, ask Brangelina all about it. did Rob and kristen ho it out for his fledgling non-twilight movie? Sure, that’s possible. So is the possibility that maybe they are ready to come out anyways publicly, and they are hitting two birds with one stone.

  34. Faye says:

He’s cute, both personality and looks. I’d like to know him, he seems like a cool guy.

  35. Laura says:

    Mmmm James Dean vibe.

  36. hairball says:

Kaiser being a Twimom…? What mathmatical equation are women supposed to do these days to make sure it’s ok to comment about males younger then them..??

  37. Beth says:

The celebs who bitch about being famous secretly enjoy the attention.

  38. almond says:

Are they, aren’t they? Should we actually care? They’re just a couple in their early teens; those are a dime a dozen. Whether they are or not doesn’t really matter, the twiloonies will believe what they want anyway. Is everyone else that invested in the franchise? Not to mention, exactly what good did it do to Sparkles’ movie to have Stewie come to his premier? Did it suddenly become a blockbuster? Puh-lease.

However, he comes off as very endearing and down to earth in his interviews; k-stew however sounds like her diamond slippers are chaffing.

  39. Newbie says:

@Gary: I actually agree with you. I’m not naive to how low and how high people will climb in that industry to get what they want. Perhaps I’m wrong on this one and the entire thing is contrived. *BIG shrug* Oh well. They seem happy together and it’s only hurting them if they’re faking it. What a life, huh? I wouldn’t do that for 3 years for millions of dollars. I’d rather have a real life of my own where I do what I want to do and I have real friends and family who give a shit that I’m happy. But I’ve never been able to do the command of someone in charge simply because they said so. I think that fame matters a lot to most of these people. To the point where they ruin their lives in the pursuit of it. But neither one of these actors strikes me as that desperate. At least, not yet. But I ain’t going to bed crying over any of them either. If they’re in a fake relationship then I think both of them should grow a pair and find out what’s really worth all that. It’s no loss to me. I have no reason to hope that they’re fake. I have no reason to worship them as a couple. I’m simply calling it like I see it: a far-off bystander’s take, of course…;)

  40. Vee says:

@Gary and @Newbie – you sure spent a lot of words defending the “it’s a PR fauxmance” stance, while trying to sound casual, pretending you really don’t care. Your intense investment is unreal.

  41. vale says:

He has no acting talent and is now only hired in order to bring the Twihards, she has no projects lined up and acts as if she is too good for Hollywood industry. They both want to be seen as “artists” and they want to survive in the industry but how when the most interesting thing is that the play in a bad franchise. They have money but they want recognition, you can see it in interviews, they pull this private/cool act to rise above the cheesy Twilight association and that already is a manipulation of their image(he’s a wannabe James Dean/she promotes her fuck-you attitude as feminism). But the only way they make headlines is with this staged relationship.

The old days of typical bearding like Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese did with the coffee dates etc. are old. People don’t buy it so now it’s about teasing. All it takes is to go to a very public place, let it leak over twitter/myspace where you will be and let the fans do the dirty work of the paps so that it doesn’t look too staged. That happened with Jake and Taylor Swift, when they were “caught” by a fan in Nashville.
But when actors/celebrities want real privacy you can’t find them. You see them when they want to be seen.

  42. vale says:

Vee: and you sound incredibly invested in believing it. I assume you are a person who squees over any celebrity couple. Let me guess, you are fan of these two, Brangelina… Who else?

  43. Vee says:

    @vale – seems I hit a nerve. LOL!

  44. Dingles says:

I don’t know what’s more endearing: the “cocaine” comment, his dad’s taste in movies or him talking about getting his dog cared for. He’s an adorable human being.

And several of you sound like deranged soccer moms who didn’t have your morning Starbucks latte, just fyi.

  45. Micki says:

I think it was a Stephen Moyer’s interview about how the executives of True Blood did their best to bring him and Anna Paquin together from rooms close to each other in the hotels to..(can’t remember now what)And he said he that after a time they hit it off. I have to admit I believe that a studio would do miracles to boost a profit.
For me Pattinson/Steward never have/had much chemistry, neither on not off screen so I still don’t believe him. If they keep for some years after the Twilight mess then I’d readily eat my hat

  46. almond says:

    @vale

I completely agree with everything you said in the first paragraph. It fits them to a T. They do want to be taken seriously and be viewed as artists, dedicated to their craft. However, all they have to show that is also noteworthy is Twilight, which is just popular drivel. They ache for professional recognition, especially Stewie.

As for what you said in the second paragraph, I’m not sure they actually need to use that ploy. The paps are always hounding them from what I understand. I could also be wrong, since I have no idea how these works anyway, but I think I heard that with facebook and twitter it’s very easy for people to make the stars’ locations known. Although how that information actually reaches the paps I have no clue.

  47. chris says:

PR doesn’t make sense at all. I find the idea that people think it is really stupid. Of course this relationship is real. I love him. He’s adorable. I absolutely love that the best thing he loves about having all that money is so that he can save his dog. I don’t think he could be any more perfect.
I also really liked Water for Elephants. He’s like twice as hot in that movie as I’ve seen him before.
