Madonna in Stella McCartney at the Met Gala: surprisingly pretty or fug matron?

fp_7249197_metgala_ram_34_256

OH SNAP. You know how Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow are no longer BFFS, after an alleged falling-out over… God knows. Something to do with fraud trainer Tracy Anderson, and maybe Kabbalah. Maybe Goop, maybe it’s just that too snotty bitch divas can’t get along forever. Anyway, THE SCANDAL: Madonna wore Stella McCartney, JUST LIKE GWYNETH. And guess what? I think Madonna got the prettier Stella dress. Right?

fp_7249200_metgala_ram_37_256

So… yeah, I think Madonna looks kind of great here. Her face work (twerk) is under control and she doesn’t look like someone just jammed a pair of two-big chicken cutlets into her cheeks. The hair is decent. And the dress is rather beautiful and (GASP) age-appropriate. Madge never wears anything age-appropriate, so seeing her all covered up and feminine, with her gristle and her thighs of doom under wraps is all rather… lovely.

I LOVE THE TRAIN. So pretty. I love the glittery stars. I love that Madonna surprised me by looking put together and pretty. Oh, Madge’s date was her manager – Guy Oseary. He’s cute. I think he’s dating Bridget Moynahan.

fp_7249201_metgala_ram_38_256

So… do you think Gwyneth was pissed that Madge showed up in Stella too? And that Madge got the prettier dress while Gwyneth was stuck with some circa 1999 Michael Kors reject? I wonder if they even spoke to each other at the event.

Love it. It’s the best she’s looked in ages, like she’s doing a reboot of SHANGHAI SURPRISE.

  2. fancyamazon says:

Definitely not a Madonna fan but she knows what to wear to the Met.

  3. texasmom says:

The dress is pretty. The problem is that she looks like a man in these photos!

  4. mln76 says:

Wow she does look great… I am still mad at her about Malawi though.

  5. Vivi says:

Not a huge fan of the satin, but overall she looks great. It’s so lovely to see her in something like this. I especially like the hair/make-up combo. She looks like an Old Hollywood star.

Ha, remember that year when she wore the Louis Vuitton get-up, with the bunny ears and thigh-high boots??

  6. Emily says:

I actually really like this look. I don’t think I’ve said that about Madonna since the 80s. The whole thing’s very 1930s, which I love. The lipstick is maybe a little too bright for the dress colour, but other than that I really like it. Hopefully, this is the start of a Madge who dresses for her age.

  7. Alaska says:

Madonna looks great! I think the Old Hollywood style really suits her. That’s a nice color, too.

  8. Micki says:

Her dress is indeed more beautiful than Gwyneth’s.

  9. isabelle says:

Don’t like Mads, but she looks great here. A topper.

  10. dorothy says:

Finally shes wearing something that fits her age. She looks elegant. Usually she’s dressed like her daughter…and it looks like shes trying to hard to look 20.

  11. escapee says:

Love the cut and color, very old school Hollywood. I wish the stars were more of a “firework spray” type though instead of the basic star, it seems to cheapen it a little.

  12. guesty says:

Fug matron. It’s the shade of the dress that’s a fail for me.

  13. LindyLou says:

Love the dress on her. It definitely sends an FU to Goopy as to who got the better SM dress! haha!

  14. embertine says:

I need this dress. I seriously need it. It is gorgeous and she looks brilliant in it.

  15. Marjalane says:

She does look good here- maybe Lourdes had a word with her.

  16. marge says:

    nice!
    and age-appropiate! that’s a first….

    love the dress!

  17. Samigirl says:

As a 24 year old who LOVES stars, (seriously, I’ve got star tats everywhere)…I just think it cheapens the gown. The icy blue is gorgeous and it looks fab on Madonna, but the stars make it look so cheap.

  18. anyhoo says:

her body looks great covered up.

  19. iheartlasagne says:

Her hair & makeup look good, I really like the dress, but I think she is wearing way too much diamond jewelry. And I love jewelry. I think she should have done without the necklace since the dress has such a lovely neckline.

  20. Sassy says:

Love the dress and she looks good! Only one complaint – the lipstick is a bit too red/bright for her, but other than that, she looks nice.

  21. Fabianne says:

Absolutely love the train of stars. She looks great.

  22. OtherChris says:

I have never found her attractive and rarely like her clothing, but I have to say, she looks beautiful here. The dress is not matronly but it’s still age appropriate. Gorgeous. Good for her.

  23. Mairead says:

Lovely dress, gorgeous colour and Madge looks great here.

  24. dread pirate cuervo says:

    Love it!

  25. Nancy says:

    She looks FANTASTIC!

  26. Roxy75 says:

That dress is stunning….perfect for Madonna. She looks perfect.

  27. mia girl says:

The blue is lovely on her and the cut fits her very well. She looks great.

But I give it a B because I agree with @escapee on the stars.I wish the star appliques were less literal. They kinda look like the ones you buy at Michaels or Joann Fabrics areound 4th of July.

  28. Rhiley says:

The prettiest she has looked in a long time but it must be a really slow boring celebrity news day for all of these posts about fug not fug celebrity outfits.

  29. anait says:

Oh, my God! Can’t believe it! She has an elegant and age appropriate dress… I hope she wasn’t under the effect of “strange substances” when she choose it! That would explain her choise! 🙂 Seriously, I like the dress and I like her with it. It had never happened before.

  30. brin says:

Can’t stand her but she looks good (like her hair style).

  31. Lynnie says:

Oooh, love the 1930s/1940s Hollywood look with the dress and hair. What a nice surprise. 🙂

  32. Justaposter says:

I love this dress! Madge looks fantab.

  33. SassyOne says:

Like the color very much for her, and the whole 1940s-Veronica-Lake vibe she’s got going on, but hate the stars ( high ick factor). Satin is almost never a good idea for anyone. Just too clingy/revealing, even if you have a very spare figure as does she.

  34. Az says:

FINALLY she gets it right. Age appropriate! And just the right amount of cleave. Sexy but not desperately sexy, the gristle is covered up and that retro style has always suited her beautifully. Her face isn’t that jacked up. That color is insane on her… Man, whens she gets it right, she gets it right!

  35. TQB says:

Oh my, I love this dress. Stars! I love stars. And the color. Gah. This dress has the same effect on me as HGF – I’m all warm and speechless.

  36. S says:

ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS. She should look like this ALL THE TIME from NOW until FOREVER AND EVER. Even when she’s washing the dishes (or at least watching her maids washing the dishes).

  37. Faye says:

The dress is pretty and she wears it well.

  38. kazoo says:

love this dress, especially the train and color.

    guy also dated gwyneth.

  39. original kate says:

great hair, great makeup and gorgeous dress. madge looks really pretty here and thank god she covered up the gristle.

  40. TeeTee says:

LOVE Madonna’s whole look and I’m glad her face has settled.

She is shitting on all of the chicks there..looking good Madge.

    LOVE it!

  41. hellen says:

Great dress, but she looks like a well-preserved 65 year old.

  42. JustJen says:

    Overall, blech.

It’s the neckline and the fit across her boobs. Seriously….put your hand over the top of the dress….sleek, lovely bodice into a brilliant train. LOVE it…

Now, cover the bottom….ACK! Not so bad in the last picture, from the side where it looks like she’s moving but full frontal…yes, it’s a vintage 40s look but the material just doesn’t work with that cut.

But I have to applaud Madge for covering up and dressing appropriately. And I have to snicker at the Goopie snub….ha!

  43. Laura says:

I like the dress, but something about the stars is really tacky and budget

  44. Deven says:

She looks quite lovely…like a star in a 1940s movie. If she looked like this more often, thousands fewer people would insult her appearance every chance they get.

  45. Ladybird83 says:

Now that is how she should dress! Madonna is the same age as my mom and I am so sick of her flashing her old shit. I love this look on her, it’s very old hollywood, which is something Madonna has ALWAYS done well.

  46. buguiii says:

amazing choise… she couldn’t look more perfect

  47. kesb says:

    Bridget Moynahan is dating McG

  48. Annaloo says:

    Madge for the WIN!

    Suck on that gristle, Gwynnie

  49. MSat says:

Very pretty and I WAAAANNNT those shoes. You can tell that she feels good in this outfit because her face is very soft and happy. Confident, but still feminine. Lighter colors look good on her.

  50. serena says:

As you said: surprisingly age appropriate.

  51. Janna says:

Gorgeous. Sexy but classy. One of the best dressed there, and I love love her jewelry, her hair, makeup. One of the best gowns I’ve ever seen Stella McCartney do. And the back is stunning. And she’s working on a new album. Yaayyyy.

And she’s put on a few pounds since she was scary skinny and had such bulging veins skinny arms. I give her a break, though, because she was going through a divorce. But she is back to her 2006/2007 Confessions tour body, not so painfully bone thin. Her arms look better.

  52. K-MAC says:

I wished she dressed more like this! it has been a long time since she looked this good!

  53. Janna says:

@Anait, actually since her forties, Madonna has, for the most part, always dressed age appropriately, very classic look, dresses never too short, except for the after Oscars party when she thought she was in concert and forgot and wore one of her costumes. LOL

  54. lucy2 says:

Satin is tough, but I really like the dress and she looks good for a change.

  55. Tia C says:

I agree with samigirl about the stars. They do cheapen an otherwise surprisingly (for Stella) attractive dress.

Since Madonna’s gotten old, she’s developed this seriously smug facial expression. Whatever the reason for it, it seriously turns me off.

  56. Holly says:

Absolutely stunning! One of the best dressed of the evening. Her face looks amazing (thank goodness!), make up/hair is flawless. Her body is killer. Choice of jewelry and accessories are just right. And the dress is exquisite, stars and all. She had the best Stella McCartney creation of the evening, even better than Stella herself!

Well done, Madonna. Hope to see more of you looking as glamorous as you are!

  57. Jojo says:

same exact color as scarjo with sean penn at white house correspondent’s dinner. Weird coincidence?

  58. gabs says:

Boring. This is MADONNA and thats the best she can do? I get that shes old now but cant she have some of that style and flair that made her famous? Idk, the color is just not doing it for me.

  59. Amanda G says:

I guess this fits her age, but I don’t care for that color on her.

  60. Nanea says:

    Well done, Her Madgesty!

I like the dress, hair, and make-up. Nothing cheap or tacky this time around. My favorite of the dresses I’ve seen.

  61. Amy says:

wow! For once she dressed her age, this dress looks awesome on her!

  62. bagladey says:

    Winning!

  63. Alexa says:

ADORABLE! I’ve always found her beautiful.

  64. Ron says:

Beautiful! She really looks perfect here.

  65. Ell says:

My favourite, she’s looks amazing. I haven’t seen her look this good in years. Love the hair, make-up and the dress is perfect, beautiful colour.

  66. citysuede says:

Love this dress! love the color, the train…all of it. usually, not a huge satin fan, but the color totally makes it work

  67. ladybert62 says:

Yuk, Yuk! I dont like the dress – I dont like her manly veiny/muscled arms and I dont like her hair! Pretty much, I guess I am not liking this outfit!

  68. Nibbi says:

she does look fab, and better yet, like herself, before all the weirdness started taking over her face. yay madge!

  69. wunderkindt says:

Stunning color, gorgeous train of stars-this is one of Madonna’s greatest fashion hits!

  70. Lady Satan says:

Lookin’ good Madge! Love the colour, the fit is perfect (as others have pointed out satin is a bitch to wear well), and it is indeed age appropriate yet still glam and sexy.

  71. Camille says:

Don’t care for Madonna at all, but she looks great here.

  72. Lauren says:

Love Madonna’s hair..classy dress too. This is the best look Madge has had in years.

  73. samuel says:

IMO, Madonna looks stunning here, very nostalgic and beautiful. But, if there is a book somewhere that says the older you get, the more you need to cover up, it should be burnt. I’ve never read it, but lots of people appear to know what age appropriate it. You’d think that idea would finally disolve. I mean, I think that’s why we have a neck – to turn it if we don’t like what we see. I say wear whatever you want, especially if you feel good wearing it.

  74. tomas says:

omg, what are you people seeing here….she looks like a F*CKING MESS.

  75. Newbie says:

I love it. I kinda wish that the embroidered stars were something else, like cherry blossoms or birds or something, but maybe that’s just too damned predictable? I really like this look on her.

  76. Nikki says:

I thought she looked great too- beautiful retro dress, gorgeous retro hair, good make-up! And nobody else had a dress even remotely similar to this one! Nice job Madge!

  77. jacquie109 says:

I love the dress, but that woman…. yeek
