Daniel Radcliffe: “it’s none of your business what [young stars] are going through”

Daniel Radcliffe gave an extensive interview to Movieline in which he kind of scolded young stars for not handling the transition to adult actors well and chastised the public for digging into their private life. I guess I understand what he’s saying, although it’s hard to reconcile the two points he’s making. Kaiser and I were e-mailing about this, since she’s a DanRad loonie, and she thinks that he’s referring to the scrutiny over Emma Watson dropping out of college. As far as his comment about “trainwrecks” goes, I don’t think there are any true trainwrecks at this point who didn’t bring it onto themselves, and I’ll get into that in a moment.

“I’m not anything special”
“Harry Potter was a phenomenon when I was 7, that’s when it came out; it was a phenomenon before I was even remotely attached. The reason I say [that anyone who played him would have become famous], and the thing that made me realize this — I was speaking to the director of the first Twilight film [Catherine Hardwicke]. She said she went to a reading of the books — Stephenie Meyer was giving a reading of the first Twilight book; this was before Robert Pattinson was cast. And she said the name Edward Cullen, and the audience went crazy. At the name. I’m sure if the demographic had been slightly different, the reaction would be the same for Harry Potter at a J.K. Rowling reading. Whoever stepped into that was going to receive a certain amount of attention and — dare I say — adulation. Which is not — in my opinion — justified, because I know me, I’m not anything special or big to fuss about.”

“If I can [transition into an adult actor] no one else has any excuses”
“Here’s the thing,” Radcliffe said about the example he’s setting in his transition from child star to adult actor, “if I can do it — in the biggest film franchise of all-time in terms of grosses — no one else has any excuses. I just want the next generation of child actors to not have to answer all those bloody questions in interviews, ‘So, how long do you expect this to last?’ Essentially, that is what we get asked. A lot. I have had that phrased that way. So I just want the next lot of kids who want to act not to have to deal with those questions.”

“People love a trainwreck”
“There are people that would love — the sad truth is that people love a train wreck. People talk all the time about young people — particularly in Hollywood — who get into trouble,” Radcliffe said about the image problems some young stars face. “First of all, it’s none of your business what they’re going through. Second of all, you have no comprehension about what they’re going through, so don’t pass judgment on it.”

Radcliffe knows that even he has potential to wind up in the celebrity barrel — not that he’d ever let that happen. “I find all that stuff very distressing, but people are interested in it and people would love to see it from me. When I switch on the TV and watch a program I really don’t like where there’s people sitting around chatting and passing judgment on people… I don’t ever want to be the person they’re talking about. It’s sad, but as soon as you are somebody in the public eye who is showing up a lot, you are theirs to debate on every level. I’m not comfortable with that.”

[From Movieline via E! Online]

Here’s the thing – no one manages their business as well as Radcliffe. He went to work on stage and really put an effort in. He never acted the diva or saw himself as anything more than a hard working actor. He hasn’t given any cringe-worthy quotes, he hasn’t been stumbling out of clubs, and he’s generally been a responsible, stand up guy. The Harry Potter stars have all pretty much stayed out of trouble and conducted themselves with grace. We can’t quite say the same for the Twilight kids, although Robert Pattinson is getting there. Some of the lesser players in Twilight are calling the paps on themselves and planting stories in the tabloids. (You know I’m talking about Ashley Greene and Kellan Lutz, who give the rest of them a bad name. We barely hear about the others.) Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart get a lot of gossip press for their relationship, but Rob handles it pretty well. I can’t really say the same for Kristen although at least she stays away from Twitter.

I’m hard pressed to think of any true trainwrecks who didn’t bring the media scrutiny on themselves. There are those that go to rehab and who never really courted the press. We talk about them briefly without harping on it. (Like say, Demi Lovato or Kirsten Dunst.) But I would venture that all the really big trainwrecks (and who is there really at this time except Linnocent?) all bring it on themselves somehow. Paris has been doing well since her cocaine conviction and Britney has reigned it in with the help of a team. So we talk about Lindsay, but she leaks stories to the press all the time and calls the paps on herself.

I get what he’s saying about how we should have empathy for young stars, and I like to think we do when it’s warranted. Look at how nice people have been to Demi Lovato after she got out of rehab and was so open about what she went through. Lindsay pissed away any good will people might have had for her years ago. She’s endangered lives and generally acted like an entitled brat. She deserves all the scrutiny and then some.

I like him I do and I see where he is coming from-but part of the problem with trainwrecks especially the young ones is that we see them flaunting their dysfunction on a grand scale and in the case of child stars like it or not they are role models. Having worked with kids in the past they do look at people like Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton and a slew of others and seeing them get rewarded for their bad behavior warps their perspective.

  2. Crash2GO2 says:

Well Daniel, it is part and parcel of being in the public eye, that people are going to be interested in and speculate about what you all are going through. Sorry.

Having said that, he is very very refreshing. So well spoken and has such a good head on his shoulders for someone who achieved fame at a very young age. And he uses his celebrity well and wisely it seems to me.

  3. Lisa says:

    He’s really funny looking

  4. Eve says:

    @ Mln76:

Agreed. And thanks for your comment, I was about to say something similar (but was too lazy to do so).

  5. Marianne says:

Maybe Rob Pattinson handles the press the best out of the Twilight kids because….He was in Harry Potter too 🙂

  6. Melissa says:

I’m such a DanRad loonie too. I think he just got defensive because he doesn’t like judgemental people. I can also see how it would feel very frustrating to think that there are people out there just waiting for you to become a trainwreck circus yourself.

  7. You don't say says:

For such a young man, Mr. Radcliffe has a good head on his shoulders. What he says seems to be contradictory, but I like that he can see both sides. Too bad others are not like that. When he did not receive a Tony nomination, he did not whine. He said anyone in show business just to be rewarded is in the wrong business. Good on him.

And unlike Tom Cruise, he owns his height and does not wear silly tennis and other shoes with lifts or make people bend at the waist to make him look taller.

  8. sorrento says:

Gosh, someone with a real brain and real opinions! How refreshing!!!!!!!

  9. LondonParis says:

  13. MuñekitA says:

    Wow! Love Him!
I wanna be his best Friend!

  14. Micki says:

And some trainwrecks get well paid for being …hm…trainwrecks.

  15. Stephie says:

He’s an example of how to do it right.

  16. BG says:

    Correction:
The Twilight showmance couple call the paps, well their studio and publicists. They certainly don’t mind releasing personal pics through fan groups but pretending they were leaked. Just info from someone who knows things in that fandom.

  17. I like what he says

  18. Whatever says:

I completely agree with him. The price of a movie ticket entitles one to see the movie. That is all. It doesn’t give everyone the right to every detail of the person’s life. Where so many young stars go wrong is letting the paps in. He’s been smart about it; others, not so much.

  19. Allison says:

    I love him.

  20. buckley says:

    I like this young man.
Someone should cast him as a vampire. He has the look.
    NOT Twilight of course…

  21. Zoe says:

Young or old, it’s none of the public’s business what any star does. People continue to justify it because they are jealous of the fame and money that comes along with celebrity, but no actor ‘signs up’ for what they end up getting, the have a job to do and they do it. People will always be intrigued by public figures and talk about them, but the star has no say or control over that. My only surprise is that there aren’t more laws to protect celebrities like there are in other countries like the UK that at least set some boundary. We don’t need a Princess Diana incident happening stateside. That said, people talk about people like Lindsay Lohan setting a bad example, and I’m not sure people realize the kind of pressures young stars experience. I lived in LA for five years and worked with some of these young stars and it’s amazing the unprecedented access, excess, and “yes” men that not only corrupt them, but they don’t often have strong family figures to be role models to them or to give their lives direction, so many fall apart. Daniel Radcliffe is lucky indeed if he was able to find a strong enough foundation to hold it together with age, and is probably among the few to have either a lot of love at home or some figure(s) to instill strength in him. This is the exception, not the rule.

  22. Oh the Humanity says:

Awwww! My niece LOVES the crap out of Harry Potter! (it’s on repeat)

  23. lucy2 says:

I like him, he seems to be doing it right.
There are some that have problems and deserve privacy to work it out, but there are other trainwrecks that bring it on themselves, and thrive on the attention and drama. I can’t sympathize with them, especially when they knowingly build a career on it.

  24. REALIST says:

Well said. I sure some of this is defending his colleague, Emma Watson. C/B, and I’m sure much of the rest of the press, has been all over her like a cheap suit.
    I love him, too.

  25. Stephy2585 says:

*standing on soapbox* I’d like to see where it is written that ACTORS, both male and female, who are crafting an art, and a respectable body of thier art via movies, etc, are required to invite us into their personal lives. We probably shouldn’t speculate and create truths about these people, who are after all just people, like you and me, albeit with a very different job…It really is just gossip. They ARE “putting themselves out there in the public eye” so to speak, but only to do their craft, for OUR entertainment. Cause they act better and look better than 99.9% of the people we know in our own lives…

That aside, I do love me some celebrity gossip.

  26. serena says:

I used to hate him, when he was a kid. Now, reading his interviews and quotes, I really like him a lot.
He’s smart, brilliant, and a very controlled stable guy.

  27. eternalcanadian says:

Okay, let me see if I get this right. You want to be an actor. In films and on Broadway, etc. You pose in magazines. Yet you deride us, the public, for wanting to know what’s going on with you? How rude. 😐

  28. kasper says:

man, i hope he saved his harry potter loot – he really has a face for radio, as they used to say.

  29. janna says:

“a face for radio?” eh? he’s no more unattractive than a lot of others….. to each his/her own.
