Jennifer Lawrence goes from blonde to brunette (for Katniss): cute or fug?

As I’ve said time and again, I kind of like Jennifer Lawrence. I think she’s beautiful, I think she’s talented, and I have high hopes that she’s not going to turn out to be some kind of smug, lip-biting, eye-rolling troll. Most of her interviews are pretty good, and she comes across pretty well-adjusted. Jennifer recently got the lead role in The Hunger Games, which many people think will be Jennifer’s chance to shine in a major role in a major studio film. By the way, for all of those people who were saying that Jennifer lost all of that weight because she was preparing for the Katniss role – bullsh-t. Her startling body makeover began MONTHS before she was in the running for Katniss.

Anyway, Jennifer recently dyed her blonde hair to this dark brunette for The Hunger Games. She even made the cover of this week’s Entertainment Weekly, in a preview for the film.

Fans of The Hunger Games – Suzanne Collins’ terrifically urgent dystopian trilogy about children forced to fight to the death — have always been protective of 16-year-old heroine Katniss Everdeen. So when Lionsgate and director Gary Ross announced that they had cast 20-year-old Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) in the lead role, the community was thrown into an inevitable tailspin. Was she too old, too blonde, too pale, too pretty to do the gritty warrior girl justice?

In this week’s cover story, EW was granted an exclusive interview with a newly brunette Lawrence, and spent hours watching her train on a Los Angeles archery range and track, just days before she was due on the North Carolina set.

In a free-wheeling interview, Lawrence describes her first encounter with Ross last winter, during the height of Oscar season. “He was asking me what the experience was like,” she recalls, “and I just kind of opened up and said, ‘I feel like a rag doll. I have hair and makeup people coming to my house every day and putting me in new, uncomfortable, weird dresses and expensive shoes, and I just shut down and raise my arms up for them to get the dress on, and pout my lips when they need to put the lipstick on.’ And we both started laughing because that’s exactly what it’s like for Katniss in the Capitol. She was a girl who’s all of a sudden being introduced to fame. I know what that feels like to have all this flurry around you and feel like, ‘Oh, no, I don’t belong here.’”

When Lawrence was offered the role, she describes her response as a mixture of elation — and desperate anxiety. “I knew that as soon as I said yes, my life would change,” she says. “And I walked around an entire day thinking ‘It’s not too late, I could still go back and do indies, I haven’t said yes yet, it’s not too late.’”

And yet, who can turn their back on Katniss? “I love this story,” she says, “and if I had said no, I would regret it every day.” After officially signing on, Suzanne Collins herself called to offer a starstruck Lawrence her most hearty congratulations. “I feel like when you said yes,” the author told her, “the world got lifted off my shoulders.”

[From Entertainment Weekly]

Okay? Fans of the books, is she your Katniss? Will she do the character justice? I haven’t read the stuff, so I don’t know.

Regarding the brunette hair… it looks pretty good on her. I think she’s so used to being a blonde, it’s a whole new thing for her to do her makeup and style herself as a brunette, though. I’ll give her time to adjust. We’ll know the brown works when Gerard Butler tries to bone her. She is now exactly he’s type: leggy, brunette and young. If she tries anything with Gerry, I will cry.

She’s hitting Nicholas Hoult. Why on earth would she want Gerard Butler????

  2. Quest says:

The magazine cover does not do her any justice.

I think Gerry would hit it if he could (he likes brunettes), sorry Kaiser. I think JL is awesome, caught one of her interviews – she was very charming, can’t help but love the girl

  3. HotPockets says:

I thought I was in love with her blue dress and then I saw the cut at the bottom of it and the whole thing was ruined for me! I actually like her a lot better with the brown hair, the blonde washed her face out.

  4. Maritza says:

She looks good either way but I like the brunette color better, it’s so much easier to maintain.

  5. albeli says:

She looks a million times better as a blonde.

  6. Rachel says:

She doesn’t look like how I imagined Katniss, but she was phenomenal in Winter’s Bone, so I think she’ll do the role justice.

I’m more concerned with who they’ll cast as Cinna. He’s may favorite character from the books, so it’s going to be very hard to do right by him.

  7. normades says:

Way better as a blonde. Girl also needs a new stylist.

  8. sapphire says:

Brunette. The cover does give her the right look for the character but she is going to have to look a lot rougher.

  9. LittleFATMe says:

I REALLY loved the books. Very good. The end of the third, eh.
Anywho, I have to watch this girl in something I know nothing about her, but I hope she can do this! She looks really cute and pretty without being TOO girllie, so as far as looks go I think she turned out to be a very nice Katniss. I was worried that she would be too pale and delicate.

  10. sasa says:

My only complaint is that the new color is the wrong shade of brown for her. She looks great on the cover but IRL you can see that it’s lighter on top and kind of redish which I don’t like for her. Going as dark as she did some brow darkening would also do wonders. I would loose the red tint, go a few shades lighter and definitely even out the color.

  11. Embee says:

I prefer her as a blonde, but also this brunette isn’t quite right. The blue dress was smashing until it became gross at the bottom.

  12. Solveig says:

She would be perfect as a young Lara Croft, but I guess she’s smart enough and wouldn’t accept that role if it was offered her.

  13. serena says:

She’s better off as a blonde.

    She suck as a brunette.

  14. lucy2 says:

Totally agree about the dress, so good until you see the bottom, which somehow makes her legs looks stumpy, and they’re not.
The brunette isn’t bad, but I think she looks better as a blonde.

  15. Kaboom says:

Brunette makes her head look broader. Not really that attractive.

  16. Dingles says:

    She’s a knockout as a blonde, as a brunette…just no.

  17. Sara says:

I don’t like her,.. she is just too bitchy about not looking a 13 year old boy, and saying that beauty is praised. I mean Ellen Page, Kristen Stewart, Saoirse Ronan are natural skinny. Just like keira knighlety e Mia Wasik(something). And what they all can do? I mean,… they are beauty like that. And all about Kristen Stewart. She read, but c’mon Kristen was doing anothers films too, so she is busy. And a comment about Jesse Einseberg in Leno. I think she should think before speak… i mean,.. did u guys read Teen Vogue interview,.. aff…
I prefer more discret people like Mia and Saoirse .

  18. Red says:

After seeing her Letterman interview, I reaaaallly like her. She’s has a great dry sense of humor, and doesn’t seem like a K-Stew-eye-rolling-troll at all.

  19. daria says:

she doesn’t look like katniss but she’s a great actress and that matters more. The brunette hair looks great on her.

What’s with the constant fixation on kristen stewart though and comparing these two? Apples and oranges, no need to pit two young successful women against eachother like it’s a cockfight.

I like them both to be honest. They both have their pretentious moments but at least they aren’t taking pictures of their twats and leaking them constantly like the rest of their peers.

  20. Jules says:

She is definitely not how I had pictured Katniss, I was really disappointed when they first cast her. Kaya Scodelario is more of what I was thinking of Katniss looking like. She does look more of the part on the EW cover but still….I guess I’m going to have to wait until the movie comes out and see if she can pull it off.

  21. Jenn WInd says:

I didn’t picture Katniss as being as pretty as she is, but I think she is going to be really good for the role. I am really looking forward to this movie!!!

Kaiser you should really read the Hunger Games, the first two are really good!! The third…well not the best, but still pretty good.

  22. Franny says:

You guys need to read this book. Its seriously addictive, its an easy read, and you must read before you watch the movie (that should always be the rule anyway). I think its good they choose an actress that, although now famous, hasn’t had too many roles. I haven’t seen any of her films, so she’ll probably always be Katniss for me. Are they make 1 long movie for the three books, or three movies? Because they really need to make 3….

  23. MikeyAngel says:

She looks like Kloe Kardashian in the blue dress. I don’t know if that is a compliment, although I LOVE kloe, she is the only kardashian I like.

  24. Celebs.com says:

She is preposterously beautiful. I LOVE her.

  25. xxodettexx says:

i am going to watch this movie in theaters [first theater run i will make in YEARS]… i finally watched winter’s bone [LOVED IT] and with her acting abilities as well as the really smart story/plot of the books, i hope this turns out well…

as for my first reaction seeing her as katniss, i was pleasantly surprised… not quite what i imagined katniss like in my head BUT i am trying to put some trust in the movie

oh and i want that blue dress, orange belt and all! 🙂

  26. Ria says:

it suits her but I don’t like the way her hair is screaming ‘I’m dyed’

  27. Liana says:

if the AUTHOR of the books is pleased with the casting, then it’s all good.

  28. sassenach says:

Liana, even though the author is pleased and Jennifer will make a fine Katniss, Josh Hutchinson is wrong for the character of Peeta. He is too short and he looks more like he is Jennifer’s brother than a love interest.

  29. Jrox says:

She is smokin in that blue dress… I have a girl crush 🙂 not sure if it’s enough to make me see xmen though

  30. Dee says:

You’re all either blind or jealous bitches. She was gorgeous before and she looks even more gorgeous now and that dress is awesome! Stumpy legs?
What the hell are you smoking?

  31. Celebs.com says:

At first, I wasn’t down with casting her as Katniss because she’s way too beautiful. Then I saw her in Winter’s Bone and now I totally get it. I think she’ll be perfect.

  32. luls says:

Its not the right shade of brown. it looks wierd. Especially at the roots!

She’d look STUNNING with Angelina’s current hair color. Or darker like Megan Fox’s.

In any case, dark hair certainly brings out her striking eyes much better than the blonde!

  33. Kim says:

Not fair! She was beautiful as a blond and even more beautiful as a brunette. Its a rarity for someone to look as good brunette as blond but she looks better. It brings out her eyes.

  34. beth says:

eh, no way. i’ve just realised her most striking feature IS her long, blonde hair – her features are nice, not extraordinary, and nevermind that, the glamour machinery can go eff themselves – the fact she has any actual talent adds immeasurably to her hotness.

  35. Stephy2585 says:

IMO She looks like Lee Lee Sobieski now…probably not a good idea to invite the comparison…

She’s the first girl I’ve ever seen look tacky by changing their blonde hair in for brown…

  36. Hazel says:

Call me snobby, but she seems provincial to me.

  37. Crash2GO2 says:

Oh man, now her gorgeous blond hair has (maybe) forever been ruined. I hope they didn’t use a permanent color and that’s the reason the brown looks odd. I much prefer her natural blond.

The hell about coloring is once you start, you can’t stop, even if you try to go back to natural. The only answer is to grow it out and deal with the two-tone look. I just went through it for the second time in my life.

  38. kasper says:

she’s boring looking either way. no one would notice here if she was serving coffee. but then you add the hype machine and all of a sudden it matters which bottle she get’s her hair colour out of.

  39. gee says:

I think she looks good blonde and brunette. She is not how I pictured Katniss at all, but I think she is talented enough to handle the role. I think he looks good.. a little too healthy for her though. Katniss is malnourished. JL is thin enough, but just has a healthy look. She needs to be more sallow or something. Yellower. Less California tan, more tired and olive skin.

  40. mj. says:

Jennifer looks stunning and she’s a marvelous actress…perhaps Jennifer Lawrence will start a new trend in Hollywood…actresses who are not only beautiful but actually TALENTED.

  41. Hooblie says:

Didnt katniss have brown eyes? I just hope they make her look rougher for the role….

I really enjoyed the books and so I hope the movies don’t disapoint.

  42. observer says:

She’s gorgeous either way. The brunette really highlights her pale eye color, though. I like it.

  43. i personally do not think jennifer will make a good Katniss at all… her looks aren’t right and her personality doesn’t fit im very upset with pretty much all the people who were cast

  44. Roxanne says:

I love Jennifer Lawrence! I think she’s absolutely PERFECT for Katniss! I’ve only seen her play Mystique/Raven, but she was great in that role! Based on the interviews I’ve seen, her personality is awesome (which is one of the main reasons I like her so much, but she’s also a phenomenal actress). She’s funny, and just so natural. She’s just believable. And doesn’t wear some of the hideous things I’ve seen some famous people wearing lately. Her style is simple and cute. Quite refreshing.
As for her hair, I find it funny she’s naturally blond, because I think she looks way better brunette. But she’s still pretty blond.

  45. Mia says:

I thinks she looks MUCH better as a brunette; it suits her skin tone, and her eyes pop. As a blonde, she simply is forgettable. I loved her in The Hunger Games; she was the perfect Katniss.

  46. jasmine says:

I think she’s looking better with brown hairs! with her blues eyes! but blonde is nice too
