Johnny Depp’s 4th ‘Pirates’ journey takes top booty (just not as much as the 3rd)

2011pirates2

As expected, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (the fourth movie in a seemingly neverending franchise) scored the top box office position with an estimated $90.1 million in ticket sales. However, some people would have us believe that these domestic results are at least slightly unimpressive compared to 2007’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End which achieved a $114 million opening weekend. Not only did At World’s End pull in $24 million more, but it did so with lower ticket prices and without the help of IMAX showings or 3-D surcharges either. Still and even if Americans are tiring of Disney pirates and getting ripped off for 3-D showings, On Stranger Tides has scored the highest domestic opening of the year, and the international grosses shall be its salvation, according to Deadline:

A Disney exec told me Friday that IMAX grosses were “very solid” for the film, but Saturday morning he admitted that 3D had turned “very soft” in the U.S. and Canada. Maybe people are sick of wearing those dumb glasses. That translated into a $90.1M weekend domestic — a far cry from the $100M weekend which Disney was expecting or the $114M which Pirates 3 did in 2007 for the first 3 days of the Memorial long weekend. I hear Pirates 4 cost in the neighborhood of $250 million to make and another $170M to market worldwide. But a derivative and lackluster U.S. promotional campaign didn’t help. (Recruited to help newbie MT Carney was vet Val Van Galder, a mistake.) Then again, reviews for Rob Marshall’s direction ranged from bad to mediocre after fans were already disappointed with the threequel from Gore Verbinski (who helmed the Pirates trilogy). However, CinemaScore was a B+, indicating moviegoers liked #4. Or maybe just those mermaid scenes.

For over 2,000 midnight locations, Pirates 4 opened to a hefty $4.7M, beating the previous midnights for Disney’s own Alice In Wonderland and well as new Summer 2011 blockbusters Fast Five and Thor. Disney released On Stranger Tides into 4,155 theaters in the U.S. and Canada, of which 2,747 are 3D locations including 256 IMAX (an IMAX domestic record). But interestingly, a survey by big online movie ticketseller Fandango found 61% of more than 2,000 ticketbuyers picked Johnny Depp’s new love interest Penelope Cruz as primary reason to attend, while only 29% selected 3D as a main factor. It won’t help that the new installment will have to contend with Hangover Part 2 and Kung Fu Panda 2 this coming Memorial weekend so rival studios think Pirates 4 will have a tough road to reach the %300M domestic of all three prior films.

That may not matter because Disney is confident it can pass the $670M of Pirates 3 now that Pirates 4 scored the best 5-day international opening of the franchise and the 4th biggest global cume. As a Disney exec acknowledged to me, “It’s a summer popcorn four-quadrant pic and U.S. audiences know what they’re getting. But internationally, there’s no denying it’s more important than ever and Johnny’s global appeal will definitely help us as well as the addition of Penelope in Europe (and the rest of world) certainly won’t hurt.”

[From Deadline]

So certainly, On Stranger Tides didn’t perform nearly as spectacularly on the domestic front as its most recent predecessor, but it still fared quite well, especially on the international realm, which the movie has scored the fourth largest global opening weekend of all time (behind the third largest, At World’s End, naturally). Indeed, Johnny Depp is one of the largest globally recognizable movie stars in the world, and Penelope Cruz’s presence certainly didn’t hurt the international markets either.

In second place, Bridesmaids pulled in $21.1 million to beat Thor, whose mighty abs may have remained victorious last week but grew fatigued in their third week out. Certainly, Bridemaids strong hold was facilitated by the movie’s really positive word of mouth, which accounts for the very low dropoff (a mere 20%) between the first and second weekend. Methinks there’ll be a sequel on the way in no time at all.

In third place, Thor added another $15.5 million to its total; for fourth position, Fast Five scored another $10.6 million; and Rio continued to flap its wings in fifth place with a $4.7 weekend. Go away, birds!

I only watched the third instalment because of Geoffrey Rush.
I can’t deal with Depp’s crap accent anymore. I can’t handle watching him in anything anymore. Way overrated. An over actor if ever there was one.

  2. Samigirl says:

I thought On Stranger Tides was better than At World’s End. It was a great, fun movie. Gotta love evil Mermaids!

  3. mln76 says:

Well I am glad Johnny made some more money so he can buy another island somewhere but PC 4 looks soooo bad…I still heart JD.

  4. Micki says:

I like Johnny Depp but appart from the first PC, I found 2 and 3 abs.crap and don’t plan even to rent the forth one.

  5. cranky_chica says:

Ian McShane chilled my blood as Blackbeard. Finally a villan I can love.

  6. the original bellaluna says:

I LOVE the POTC movies! I really want to see this one, but I can’t do 3D ANYTHING…makes me sick, gives hubs a migraine.

  7. serena says:

Eh. I think it’s lower because this time around there isn’t neither Keira and Orlando. They were huge on this franchise, they really made up a good solid trio.

  8. lucy2 says:

It opened lower than #3, but I think it also cost about 50-$100 million less to make.
I didn’t care for #2, and have only seen parts of #3, but I want to go see this one. Aside from Super 8 and The Help, there’s no other summer movies I really want to see (already saw the awesome Bridesmaids).

  9. Trillion says:

I thought it started off tired and felt sort of forced. Maybe Penelope is great in Spanish, but in English she really doesn’t cut it. I thought she was actually distractingly bad. And I agree that the Bloom and Knightly added a lot to the films. Their absence is glaring, although the addition of Ian McShane is awesome and he’s dead perfect as Blackbeard.
Agree w/ Sami that the mermaids were amazing. Just wish the effects hadn’t been so “vampire” on them. That’s just so super played these days.

  10. Trillion says:

Oh and Kaiser, feel free to just put in that shot of Helmsworth wherever you can. Even if it has nothing to do with the story.

  11. Dingles says:

On Stranger Tides was much better than POTC 2 and 3. I didn’t expect to enjoy it but it really was a fun movie. The sequence with the mermaids was incredibly creepy and awesome.

Also, go see Bridesmaids. Immediately. I saw it with some girlfriends last night and we laughed so hard we cried. The entire theater was roaring. If you’re afraid it’s another cliche, Kate Hudson-esque rom-com, it isn’t…not even close. Seriously, it really is that good.

  12. NaomiCampbellsPhone says:

I truly don’t get the hate for 2 & 3, it’s probably because I’ve seen them more times than I care to mention but I understood what was going on and I loved them!

  13. Mary Jane says:

Although my Johnny looks hot as heck…
WHY? Really, why? No, really, WHY?
If JD is that serious about doing “kid” movies, then maybe he should consider, “The Pushcart War.” GREAT book…

  14. Jamie says:

#12, I’m with you. I loved the first 3 POTC movies and At World’s End is actually my absolute favorite out of them all. But, I just do not have any desire to see On Stranger Tides. I think part of that is not only the storyline not really being appealing to me this time around or the absence of Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom – as much as I love Johnny Deep – but, also because I can’t stand Penelope Cruz.

  15. TQB says:

I adored pirates 4!! I am hopelessly in love with JD, yes, but I hated pirates 2 and only enjoyed pirates 3 because I watched it at home with a lot of wine. Stranger Tides was hilarious, Geoffrey Rush and Ian McShane were fantastic, Johnny and Penelope were both hot as all get out and the plot was simple and not overly contrived with people’s hearts in boxes and blablabla crap. Seriously, I had SO MUCH fun at this movie. It’s not great theater, but it’s fun as all hell.

  16. NaomiCampbellsPhone says:

Yay #14, I was beginning to think I was the only one! I also agree with your reasons for not being that interested in 4, with the addition of Tia Dalma not being there because I liked that character.

  17. the original bellaluna says:

@ NaomiCampellsPhone – (great handle, BTW!) I liked the interwoven storylines in 2 & 3. It was nice to see the source of Davy Jones’ mentality & tie in the Dia Talma storyline. I’ve seen POTC3 more times than I can say! LOVED At World’s End!

  18. Victoire says:

I love Johnny Depp, no, adore Johnny… But I agree with comment #1 – man can’t act.
