Does Gwyneth Paltrow need to ditch her flat-iron?

wenn3362006

I showed one of these photos yesterday, but I didn’t identify where it came from. Yesterday, Gwyneth attended the “Flower Show For Peasants” (also known as the Chelsea Flower Show) in England. Dame Goop was there to shill her cook book to the English peasants. She did not look thrilled about it, in my opinion. I think Goop is kind of “over” this whole “promoting one’s book in a tour of the peasant shopping districts” thing. I didn’t really hate Goop’s outfit – white jacket, white blouse, khaki pants, heels (okay, the pants are totally fug). But I hate her hair. She’s still flat-ironing it! Goop and Jennifer Aniston have that in common – they’re both so 1990s with their flat-irons.

Also: can you tell how much Gwyneth hates posing with her book? Like, she’s ashamed to be at this event with all of these authentic English people and she feels like a dirty American peasant trying to make a buck. That’s what she is, though.

Meanwhile, an ACTUAL Dame, Dame Helen Mirren was also at the Chelsea Flower event too. She was invited because a carnivorous plant was being named in her honor. Damn, Dame Helen is so awesome even botanists are like “let’s name this man-eating plant after Helen Mirren.”

Dame Helen! More about her, less about goopster!

  2. Heatheradair says:

Right at this moment, I’m wearing a trench coat almost EXACTLY like The Mirren’s. Coral-colored and everything.

Geez, I feel Classy By Association now. Like The Mirren and I are best coat friends, we just haven’t met yet.

  3. ladybert62 says:

The only thing I like about Gwennie is her hair – leave it as is please.

  4. Ria says:

    hahaha Helen Mirren rocks:)))

  5. DGO says:

Does she use a flat iron? I thought she just had stringy hair.

  6. strickchic says:

I like her hair, not her so much. I still use a flat iron everyday, that doesn’t make me 1990’s.

  7. aenflex says:

Yes I was thinking that yesterday. Hair looks crunchy.

  8. francesca says:

Isn’t that a different book she’s holding? Not “My Father’s Daughter”?

  9. sandy#1 says:

yes, i agree, more about dame Helen, less about … i also thought the hair was naturally that way.

  10. Aria says:

When I grow older, I want to be as cool as Dame Mirren. She’s great. Goopy get lost!

  11. Nina says:

In addition to ditching the flat iron, she also needs to quit parting her hair in the middle.

    Gwen. Darling. Just .. stop.

  12. trolleydolly says:

Unless she perms it, her hair will always be straight and thin. I have exactly the same type of hair and you cannot due anything else with it really.

  13. kasper says:

Kaiser, there’s no way Goopy will do natural. It is either going to be flat-ironed or excessively curled – remember her in one of the Austin Powers movies? That is what she’ll do if she ever gets beyond the flat-iron.

Do you understand what that would come with? She would think curly hair makes her sensual. Goopy would then start giving everyone tips on their sex-lives, talk up her non-existent sex-life with Martin, drag him everywhere with her so she can PDA in front of the cameras, “write” a sexbook, star in a musical about an R&B singer from Harlem — as the singer — move to a fortified home in Harlem, and release the worst R&B album in music history, accompanied by a video of her “shaking her thing”.

Please, Kaiser, for the sake of us all, take it back.

  14. roc says:

her hair is most definitely NOT thin and stringy …she’s spoken before about her obsession with straight hair …her hair naturally is actually quite curly …too lazy to attach pics, but google it

  15. Quest says:

Only Goopy would pimp out a Cookbook at a Flower Show, huh

Always awesome Helen is caressing that penis shaped plant (my opinion) like she is ready to make it’s day…lol

  16. Chelsey says:

Oooh I love her shoes! The rest of the outfit, meh. But I want those shoes!

  17. aenflex says:

if any of you care to look at pics of her when she was young, you would see full, slightly coarse, wavy hair, which was a darker strawberry blonde, light brown type colour. she has lightened and flattened the shit out of it for 14 years. same with anniston. ruined perfectly good full heads of hair.

  18. Nanea says:

The plant named after Dame Helen is actually a rat-eating plant!

Goopy looked totally out of place at the Chelsea Flower show because she quite obviously didn’t fit in with e.g. QE II, Princess Beatrice, Camilla… – or real authors like Terry Pratchett, or real cooks like Raymond Blanc, or accomplished actors like Dame Helen or Vanessa Redgrave.

Goopy’s hair looks like she can’t afford neither a decent haircut nor products that make her hair less damaged/split ends looking.

  19. original kate says:

everything about goop is 90s: her flat-ironed hair, her tan capri pants (!) those stripey shirts she always wears, her osteoporosis, her general goopiness… and why is she carrying her book around at a flower show? ugh – that is weird.

as god as my witness, when i finally get my novel done and published i will carry it everywhere i go. *raises fist to the sky*

  20. Melinda says:

I love my flat iron and use it every day too. I’m giving her a pass on the hair.

  21. Rhiley says:

I liked when she and Brad Pitt looked like a lesbian power couple, circa 1997 or so. I wish she would do that to her hair again. That has been her most fugtastic look to date. Of course, I shouldn’t hate too much because in my late teens early 20s I had some pretty fug cuts too

  22. anon33 says:

I want to preface this by saying I am defending users of flat irons, not Gwyneth…bc I cannot STAND her anymore.

I have the same kind of hair as Gwyn and Aniston. Let me tell you, it is way easier to just flat iron it than to try to “keep it natural” while also keeping the frizz, curls, and flyaways under control. If I style my hair “natural”, it literally takes three times as long to keep the curly and wavy, but also make the hair smooth and bouncy. And we’re talking three times longer than an hour, which is what it takes me to fully blow dry my hair and then iron it.

I do agree that hair LOOKS better in your “natural” style if done correctly, but for me personally, it’s a time issue.

And, if I let my hair dry naturally? HUGE frizz cloud. HUGE.

  23. Allison says:

Yeah, i really think she should change it up :/

This is the only way I can remember seeing her hair for a long time. Its really plain & boring and not so flattering. She should ditch the baby blonde too.

  24. the original bellaluna says:

    Love, LOVE, LOVE! Dame Helen!

Goop needs to ditch her attitude, her superiority complex, her look-down-her-nose-at-the-peasants attitude, her “royalty” issues, and maybe her husband. I could give a f*ck about her hair.

(Sidenote: my hair is down to my rear; naturally straight; and I’ve never flat-ironed it in my life. it also won’t hold curl to save a life, so I wear it straight.)

  25. jinni says:

    Anon33:
I beleive that the reason people think that straight hair is easier is becuase we are only really taught how to deal with straight hair. Straight hair is considered the ideal hair type. There weren’t really any books or guides on how to maintain curly or wavy hair because people with those types of hair were just told that only solution to all the problems you descride was to straighten their hair. It’s still hard to find a stylist that knows how to cut and style curly/wavy hair, because our types of hair was thought of as a problem that only flat-irons, hotcombs, or relaxer could “correct”. Also, not until recently has their been hair products spectifically made to deal with the care of wavy/curly hair in it’s natural state.

I think that as more and more people with curly/wavy hair educate themselves about their hair and how to maintian it, they will be putting down the flat-irons and relaxers.I understand the time problem and have found that overtime as I’ve gotten used to doing my curly hair that I’ve been able to get a routine that is really time efficient, so hang in there and don’t give up on your curls.

  26. the original bellaluna says:

@ jinni – You also need to find a stylist who is able to cut curly hair. I took my daughter (mixed-ethnicity) to people who knew how to do her hair. I spent countless dollars on product designed for her type of hair (no chemical processes, she has very sensitive skin) and countless hours teaching her how to care for her hair. And her hair is freaking gorgeous!!

  27. Hellen says:

I thought the only time her hair actually looked great was in “The Perfect Murder”. Not to mention, she rocked that pale skin/matte red lipstick look.

Of course, most of my atention was reserved for Viggo. Sigh.

  28. Annaloo says:

Looking at that pic of Gwyneth left me parched..In front of all that greenery, her hair looks dry, her skin definitely looks dry.. just an overall washed out…
    no vibrancy..

I need a glass of water.

  29. girl says:

I actually like GPs shoes here.

Helen Mirren is all kinds of awesome.

  30. jinni says:

    the original bellaluna:

Right now I’m just letting my hair grow long so I’m not looking for a stylist to cut my hair, but I know I should find one in my area just in case. Also, it’s great to hear that you are helping and encouraging your daughter to love her hair.

  31. Slim Charles says:

Her hair is awful! How can anyone say they like it? She needs to embrace the side part and stop flattening it.

  32. Amanda G says:

Um, I use a flat iron. How does that make me 90s? I have wavy hair and I want to make it straight. It’s as simple as that.

  33. anon33 says:

    Thanks jinni!
I had the stylist problem for about ten years. People would even say to me as I sat in their chairs “I just don’t even know what to do with this hair,” which made me want to smack them! Finally I found someone who knows what she is doing, thank god!!

  34. tanya says:

Um, I want to BE Helen Mirren. Not in 30 years, when I’ll be in her age bracket, but NOW! I want to be her NOW!

    That is all…

  35. wunderkindt says:

Straight hair has been around for 10 yrs already!

    Time for something NEW!

  36. Annie_Grey says:

Her hair was actually thick-ish before she started bleaching it.

  37. mln76 says:

I don’t think she looks horrible with straight hair-just boring…and she’d also look better if she changed the color. Most women do look better with their nature color/texture of hair.

  38. Yasmine says:

Her hair is so 90s not just because of the flat iron, but because of the way it is parted in the middle, with the extremely thin eyebrows. It’s now popular to give hair a little more bounce. But bounce does not go with Goop, or her “work ethic” that she claims we are jealous of. Man I can’t stand her, but love ripping her apart.
As for all my fellow curly haired ladies, I feel your struggle. And let me tell you what changed my hair and made it so much more manageable: Argan oil serum by Josie Maran. (Forget that brand Moroccan oil, it’s crap.) The Josie Maran products are only sold at Sephora btw. I’m Middle Eastern (read: thick, frizz, nightmare) and that stuff has smoothed my hair down like nothing else will, and gives a shine to the curls. I don’t know what I would do without it, so I had to share the love.

  39. Amanda says:

I can’t make fun of her hair. I have hair similar to Gwyneth’s natural hair texture. It’s frizzy and dry and every day I have to either straighten it with a flat iron or curl it with a curling iron. I literally cannot just blow dry it or let it air dry without flattening or curling. So, I understand her need to flat iron.

  40. poppy says:

“Straightening my hair is big for me in terms of feeling confident. If I have straight hair, I feel like half of my outfit battle is over.”-GP

she’s stuck in the moment she figured out how to make her hair sleek. the 90s, when she was much younger and the pin straight severity wasn’t as aging. she’s the 60 year old truck stop waitress with the big bouffant. hey, it got her laid, um, work and attention, so she is never going to give it up no matter how dated she looks.

hail mary she finally took those extensions she has been wearing since last fall out.

goop must have the blondest, straightest, longest hair or she is worthless.

  41. kasper says:

@ poppy: “goop must have the blondest, straightest, longest hair or she is worthless.” – that is great.

I think at least a part of this has to do with her running from her ethnic side – she has nailed the WASP look right out of a J.Crew catalogue.

Again, this goes back to the social hierarchy in a private school – that look means old money, means you can trace your roots to the Mayflower and have kept the bloodlines pure. Goopy is forever stuck in grade 10.

  42. futureperfect says:

I love how her name is bigger than the title on the cover of her book. Oh Goopy…

  43. Annie_Grey says:

Side-part and it’s a whole new Gwyneth! I say, seize the day.

  44. anonymoose says:

yyyyyessssssss. and if you are going to take all the body out of your hair, mercy, do your face a favor and please part it on the side, AT LEAST. flat ironing thin hair is more ugly than dated. boring and flat and blah. looks harsh and unflattering to faces. it is the hair equivalent to being unwillingly dragged somewhere against one’s will. not graceful.

goopygoo *IS* stuck in the moment she figured out how to straighten her hair. lame!

flyaway stringy flat hair is NOT pretty.

you wouldn’t see catherine deneuve flat ironing her mane, parting it down the center, tucking it behind her ears. princess paltrow needs to get some style. at least cut the ends of her hair so it looks healthy. a good blunt cut. almost anything but the crap she’s been boring us with for the past howeverlong.

  45. S says:

DAME HELEN IS DOING LADY GAGA’S MONSTER PAWS! I think I love her even more now if that is possible.

  46. Chantay says:

YES! Gwyneth needs to ditch her flatireon

  47. really says:

Or she could just slap her husband with it!

  48. @Tanya, I totally agree, oh to have that confidence and sexuality NOW, christ, why do we have to wait till we are older to have that!! Actually, in retrospect I couldn’t be trusted with that power just now. I would be an outrage. I take it all back.

  49. Sara says:

Are the fake bleach blonde, my hair really shouldn’t be this long types here to stay? This look is not good ladies, hair looks damaged and stringy, WAY too blonde. All that colouring will eventually damage your hair. I think she needs to go back to the mob cut, wonder what her natural colour is.

  50. HotLatino says:

How does straight hair make you look like you’re stuck in the 1990’s. There was a study where a woman created 2 different profiles on a dating site and the only difference was the hair: straight vs curly and the straight hair one got 11 times more messages so straight hair wins, I hate curly hair!!!
