Zoe Kravitz, 22: “I haven’t sold out in any way, shape or form”

49_coverV2.indd

Granted, I was already poised to dislike Zoe Kravitz on general principle. She’s 22 years old. She’s got a great figure. She’s had the world handed to her on a silver platter. She thinks she’s, like, the most epic fashionista in the world because she’s recycling her mom’s early ‘90s styles. And lastly, Zoe scored my lover Michael Fassbender. I’ve heard that he made a big play for Zoe during the filming of X-Men: First Class, meaning that she scored one of the hottest actors working today without lifting a finger too. All of that could breed a Goop-esque snottiness in someone so young. I was prepared to dissect every quote from her ASOS cover interview, looking for clues that she’s a horrible person. It’s my sad duty to report that she’s not. She says some stuff where I’m like “Ugh, stop talking,” but that’s more about her being very young. Honestly, Kristen Stewart comes out with worse quotes any day of the week. Here are some quotes from the interview:

On being lucky: “I’m in a very lucky position, because I’ve been around [fame] so long, I don’t feel like I have to chase it.”

Being an It Girl: “All that ‘it girl’ sh-t makes me kind of uncomfortable. I’m only at the beginning of my career, but I feel successful in that I haven’t sold out in any way, shape or form. I feel good about the choices I’ve made, and I don’t feel like I’ve let go of any of my values. Fame has become this obsession for people, which kind of creeps me out.”

Summer camp with the Fassdong: “I feel like sometimes if you do a film with ‘movie stars’ there’s all this drama and superiority, but ‘X-Men’ was not like that at all. We (Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, and boyfriend Michael Fassbender) were living in London for four months and it was like X-Men summer camp, so we all hung out at each other’s houses after filming, went out to pubs…I lived in Notting Hill, right by Portobello…I’m spending all my money on flea-market shopping!”

On her band, Elevator Fight: “I just always did it from when I was a kid. I was a drama club geek. And having the band is great because with acting there are long periods of time out when you’re not doing anything and I don’t like just sitting around. I go crazy.”

On her mom, Lisa Bonet: “She walked away from being famous, because she didn’t really care about it. She is the most true artist I have met. She doesn’t change for anybody… I see her in front of people, in interviews, at home alone at five in the morning making collages, or in her garden, and I admire her so much. And the fact that she’s my mum is just so cool!”

On style: “I used to be a little embarrassed by how she (mom Lisa Bonet) and my dad (Lenny Kravitz) would dress…but now I steal their clothes all the time.”

[From ASOS]

I rolled my eyes at “I feel successful in that I haven’t sold out in any way, shape or form.” God, remember being 22 years old? And, like, THE WORST THING EVER was the thought of “working for the man” and giving up your “principles”? Whatever. What principles has Zoe refused to sell out? I don’t really understand. She was in that crappy Catherine Zeta Jones movie, No Reservations. She’s in a big comic book franchise film. But she’s still a hipster with indie-cred, right? Meh. I prefer the Kevin Bacon style of actor – sometimes you make some crappy movies, sometimes you make some good movies, but what counts is that you’re working, because being a working actor in today’s industry is hard.

Uh, sweet pea? You have to have something worth giving up in order to “sell out.”

When life’s been handed to you on a famous silver platter, selling out would be going to work as a public defender or taking a non-paid position at a charity, not going into the “family business.” MMKAY?

p.s. punkin’ – After momma did Angel Heart (with Mickey Rourke, if I’m not mistaken) she sort of killed her own career. Bill Cosby (and Cosby/Different World producers) didn’t want that image on their family-oriented shows. After that, the only thing I saw her in was Enemy of the State. So no, momma didn’t really “walk away from being famous.” She sealed her own fate with one or two bad career decisions made a the wrong time in what could have been her burgeoning career.

  2. me says:

    who?

  3. Time out says:

She still looks like a little girl. Her going out with Fassbender is a bit creepy to be honest. What is he doing with a 22 year old that looks 15?

  4. teehee says:

Ach… this stuff actually makes me appreciate my poverty stricken upbringing.

  5. nnn says:

I would advise children who are not as beautiful and/or talented as their mother/father used to be, who have zero charisma unlike their famous parents, who would likely be compared to what their mum use to be, to drop out or take another artistic route where the comparison is less likely to happen.

With the parents she has she will have to be twice as better than anyone and personally she is the pale version of any of her parents and doesn’t have that IT factor AT ALL.

The Willis daughter, the Roberts daughter and her are just sweet wanna be actresses who want to make a living coatailriding the old flame of their respective mum and dad with a so so physique according Hollywood standards, a so so talent in par with Hollywood standard and a lack of charisma magnet which is the only factor that could propel you despite of everything else higher than your peers.

  7. the original bellaluna says:

    @ brin – *smiles*

  8. Kevin says:

I disagree on your opinion of selling out Bella. Bob Seeger sold out when he let G.M. use his songs on their commercials. If you try to help the less fortunate when you could be making big bucs (your example exactly) that is far from selling out. As far as Zoe goes, meh. Do something other than be shat out of a famous vagina and I might care.

  9. LOVE ANGELINA says:

I am her age and I don’t think like that. Zoe hasn’t really had a life or career where she can talk like that. She doesn’t have anything to sell out from. Lets give her some time and see where her career goes then find out what Hollywood does to her. I mean she may walk away like her mom but who knows. I do wish Zoe the best of luck though…if she is a good actress and all.

She was in “No Reservations”? I have seen that movie a few times and I haven’t recognized her in it.

  10. Steph says:

Comments like that make me roll my eyes. Again, she is quoting the same bs like the other actors in Hollywood who think they haven’t sold out.

  11. Granger says:

I think she’s a little young to be talking about selling out. I’ll be curious to see where her career takes her in three or four years.

  12. gee says:

I kind of nothing her? I don’t really like her, I definitely don’t dislike her. I think the jury is still out… I like Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz though.

  13. the original bellaluna says:

@ Kevin – Put it in perspective. I’m talking about what “selling out” would be considered to someone like her, a child of wealth and privilege. If you don’t like the term “selling out” substitute “going against the grain” with regard to her wealthy upbringing.

Helping those less fortunate is not something I consider “selling out” but then, I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth and a trust fund, either.

I detest when TRUE artists allow their songs to be used for commercials. It’s a turn-off. (Let us not forget “Revolution” for Nike commercials several years back. I was DEVASTATED.)

  14. Cherry says:

Eh…she’s 22, who didn’t say this kinda stupid stuff at that age, rich or poor? She hasn’t done much besides sleeping with two actors I crush on (Ben Foster and Fassbender) to get me hating on her. She and her mother pull some fine men.

  15. Elizabeth says:

    @ the original bellaluna

Paul Newman is my example of a celebrity using his fame not to seel out but to help others. He is dead now but his estate is still doing the charitable work that he started. He was the one that all of today’s celebrities are following in the footsteps of.

    * love the name, by the way – “belllllla”

  16. mln76 says:

I actually like her…and I think the whole ‘selling out’ thing probably comes from her mom telling her about her expierences. I think she probably grew up with a real rustic hippie upbringing and not as the daughter of B-listers. I’d take her brand of pretention over K-Stew faux angst any day of the week.

  17. the original bellaluna says:

@ Elizabeth – PERFECT example! Thank you.

  18. Ria says:

who is she? is she that same Zoe who is a stylist or something?

  19. garvels says:

Zoe did not sell out, she just rode on her parents coat tails. I do not see the talent and I agree with another poster that she does not have the “it” factor. She is only notable due to her parent’s respective careers.

  20. lolas says:

Of all eras to emulate, fashion wise, WHY THE EARLY 90’S? They were the worst.

  21. tapioca says:

“WHY THE EARLY 90′S? They were the worst.”

Ah, so you clearly weren’t alive in the mid-eighties!!

  22. OtherChris says:

She’s full of crap. Talk to us when you’re 40 and you’ve lived a little and had to struggle. Oh wait, that last part won’t happen because she was born rich.

    She’s the new Gwenyth Paltrow.

  23. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

@the original Bella, “Let us not forget “Revolution” for Nike commercials several years back.”

if it makes you feel any better, Michael Jackson owned the rights to that song (along with many other songs from The Beatles catalog) and he sold that song to Nike. Michael was able to outbid Paul on the catalogs, which put an end to their frienship. McCartney did not want his music being used to shill footwear (and he said as much), but there was nothing he could do about it.

  24. RHONYC says:

liked what she said about her mom. gotta give it to Lisa Bonet, she has NEVER gave a f*ck. plus kids, ‘especially’ your own are the 1st to call you out on your bullsh*t, so it’s nice to see how she looks up to her mom.

i don’t think she is half a beautiful as Lisa was at that age though.

    jussayin. 😉

  25. Atticus says:

Maybe she’s just saying she hasn’t hit the casting couch, or hasn’t become famous for her piss poor public behavior (Cyrus, Lohan). She seems pretty harmless to me. She seems TWENTY TWO to me. Kaiser, you hit the nail on the head with “God, remember being 22 years old? And, like, THE WORST THING EVER was the thought of “working for the man” and giving up your “principles”?”

She’s so interesting looking…she doesn’t strike me as being the spitting image of either of her parents, and yet in the first few pics she reminds me so much of her dad and in that last one, of her mom…perfect mix of both of them, who are both freaking unbelievably gorgeous.

  26. Crash2GO2 says:

Lisa Bonet was absolutely the WORST actor I EVER had the displeasure of seeing. It was a relief when she sank from view. The only thing she was good for on the screen was looking at.

*phew* I feel much better now.

  27. Jen34 says:

Aw, she’s just a kid and she speaks like a kid. It think it’s natural that she idolizes her mom, but I wonder if she knows that her mom would not be the person to emulate if she’s serious about a career. IIRC, her mom was fired by Cosby (maybe twice?) for unprofessional behavior and violating a morals clause. I would be more impressed with young Zoe if she manages to keep her clothes on.

  28. the original bellaluna says:

@ Morticians – It does, actually. Thank you. I loved the Beatles as a teen and I cried the first (and last) time I saw that commercial.

    @ Jen34 – Yep. Angel Heart.

  29. Sue says:

Jen34@ Her mom was fired by Cosby because she didn’t fit his image of the perfect child she started dating Lenny Kravitz which he didn’t approve of and got pregnant; Carl Anthony Payne II, who played Theo’s friend Cockroach, was fired from the show for refusing to cut his hair. Bill Cosby real kids were for from perfect so he tried to make his TV kids to be.

  30. Alice says:

I love her, and I’m fully aware she has no redeeming qualities. But in this case, my celeb-love is completely shallow. I love her simply because she’s Lenny Kravitz’s daughter and she’s beautiful.

  31. original kate says:

at least zoe seems aware that she has been very lucky because of who her parents are. some others in hollywood could take that lesson in humility.

    *cough-goop!-cough*

  32. Ally says:

I guess she means sell out whatever minimal hipster cred she has. No one cares.

Plus, best not to make that point in the course of a glorified catalogue shoot. ASOS is an online clothing retailer.

It is a bit creepy that Fassbender is attracted to someone who looks this young.

  33. LunaT says:

@OGBellaluna—I was thinking the same thing about her mother’s fame. I don’t think she walked away from it. She kind of fizzled after the Cosby show and whatever that “Cosby kid in college” show she was on. The only thing I know about Lisa Bonet now is that she recently made a baby w/a guy that is reallllly hot. And she still has her dreads. That’s it.

How can you sell out when you haven’t done anything other than be hooked up by your parents’ connections and money to start your acting and music career?

  34. the original bellaluna says:

@ Sue – She also did a suggestive cover for Rolling Stone (when we all know suggestive magazine covers are blasphemy for a family-oriented show starlet) and she had some very…”racy nude and sex scenes” (according to IMDB). Lenny Kravitz was probably the least of her career problems around that time. But if I remember correctly, Bill Cosby wasn’t very fond of the idea, as much because of her age at the time as Lenny’s “appearance.”

@ LunaT – I was an older teenager in the later years of the Cosby Show and A Different World. I remember reading about how shocked people were when she did Angel Heart. She was bounced from the Cosby Show because of what I just told Sue. Bill Cosby gave her a second chance when he cast her in A Different World, and she blew that too. She started not showing up on time, or at all, and was bounced for unprofessional conduct.

Girlfriend didn’t “walk away” from her career; she trashed it with her less-than-desirable behaviour and poor choices.

  35. Iggles says:

Don’t know why there’s so much contempt for her. She’s just doing her own thing and she doesn’t strike me as obnoxious about it like many kids of stars *cough*the smith kids*cough*

I agree that her mom walked away from fame. She was on a hit show – the spin off “A Different World” was setup as a vehicle for her – and she decided to go another path. If she yielded to the Cosby it would have been all gravy.

When you’re an actor under contract you can’t just quit! That’s why so many TV stars wait until their contracts expire not to renew them! Their only other option is to get fired.

  36. gobo says:

Oh god. She is reminding me of Peaches Geldoff…

  37. maggie says:

She’s completely beautiful and lucky to have such an amazing mum. Her father was the sell out. “Are you gonna go my way” is the biggest cheeseball song of all time.

  38. Ari says:

she reminds me of a mixed kate bosworth – unrelevant and trying so hard to act “cool” except at least she has famous parents which was all she was known for until this movie – so yeah keep on not selling out *yawn*

  39. marge says:

i did not know who this girl in all the fassdong’s articles was… so her only merit is being lenny kravitz and lisa bonnet’s daughter? meh…

  40. June says:

    Not. It.

  41. Solveig says:

Pardon my ignorance, but who is this girl?
Is she famous (big word) just because she’s the fiancée of Fassbender and the daughter of Kravitz and Bonet?
With a name like that I bet it wasn’t difficult for her to start a career in HW as it wasn’t difficult for the rest of the others “children of”.

  42. StopKiddingYourself says:

I really, really don’t get the contempt either. Where is this coming from? She’s nowhere near as vapid many of the other up and coming Hollywood actors her age. Some of you are comparing Zoe Kravitz to Gwyneth PALTROW!
For real? What a leap! I think she’s cute and has got some potential. We’ll see. Some of you are just too much. Haggish, even.

  43. B says:

i like what she said about her mom. sweet.

  44. gg says:

Selling out doesn’t mean doing public work for the public good; selling out is getting a Starbuck’s tattoo for a million bucks.

  45. jay says:

    …who?

  46. mia girl says:

I think that from a 22 year olds perspective, she equates selling out with something like being part of the Disney machine to gain fame. Many of actresses in her age range have found fame that way. At least that’s how I read it.

  47. Anonymous says:

Puh-leez!!! Gurl, you are not half the beauty that you mom or even your father is! Get over yourself!

Why is your beautiful, but non-working mom up at 5:00 AM making collages anyway…is she on meth?

(I DO think Lisa Bonet is beautiful and has a great singing voice as was evidenced in “High Fidelity.”)

  48. Annaloo says:

What she said about her mom was so sweet.

  49. Leticia says:

I think Lisa Bonet is drop dead gorgeous. Unfortunately, the daughter does not look like the mother. If her parents weren’t famous, we wouldn’t even know about her. Though she is prettier than the Willis kids.

  50. Liana says:

    she hasn’t “sold out” …yet. I hope she doesn’t.

  51. ZenB!tch says:

LOL! Ah youth. What did she have to sell out about? Would she be any one at all were her dad not Lenny Kravitz? Maybe, she’s adorable but she might be a Disney kid instead of being in a real movie.

I’ve never heard her speak so I will withhold any opinions on her talent but can she be worse than her mom and her permanently stoned Valley girl accent?

Does anyone born after 1980 even know who her mother is?

Those of us born before 1975 can tell you that Lenny K pretty much had his career handed to him on a silver platter. His mom was a huge sitcom star in the 70s and his dad was a producer.

  52. Riana says:

Sheesh, I get that the name of the site is ‘celebitchy’ but do some of you have to sound so bitter and hateful. Goodness, I think gossip sites are harmless fun when they’re just used to explore some shallow news but when I see some of the vitriol written I see in some cases they inspire people to blow off the jealousy or anger they feel personally on an easy target (as the author already admitted).

A few of you all need to chill. Zoe isn’t anything special to me but based on that interview the fervor some of you have to complain is laughable.

Oh gosh she claims she didn’t sell out, I now have a window into her soul and can tell her she’s a moron till she’s 40. Eye rolllllll.

  53. Enny says:

She hasn’t sold out only because she’s had the luxury not to do so. If she’d had to build a career from scratch, and not as Zoe f-ing Kravitz, she’d be going the High School Musical route and loving it.

  54. Eleonor says:

She hasn’t sold out a sextape.

  55. Girl... says:

Let’s see… Her last movie was an indie that critics dubbed ‘Precious Lite’ and it didn’t get a distributor. So now she’s half naked in a summer action flick, playing a stripper who barely has a speaking role. That sounds like selling out to me. As someone already pointed out Lenny, a very mediocre musician, only got into the industry because of his parents. So she’s second-generation nepotism. She was born to sell out. So work that pole like a Kravitz, Zoe. No pun intended.

  56. anon says:

I cringed when i read that she said she went to a school in miami and it was full of rich kids i was like well what do you think YOU are? hanging out in brooklyn does NOT make you poor zoe. It was really embarressing to read she probaly was the RICHIST KID THERE! but having said that she’s still young and finding her identity and she seems a nice kid she bagged a hottie too!
