Avril Lavigne ‘sorry if anyone was offended’ when she swore after baseball game

Avril Lavigne got frustrated when the sound system wouldn’t work during a recent concert after a baseball game in Tampa, Florida. When the crowd starting booing, she got frustrated and said that sort of sound problem “f’ing happens on a baseball field.” It was mid-level cursing and nothing terrible, but the concert organizers were not amused and issued a statement that they “demand profanity-free performances” and that Avril’s f-bomb was “not consistent with the atmosphere that Tropicana Field is known for.” Uh-oh. Here’s more, from E! Online:

The Tampa Bay Rays apologized to fans over the weekend after the singer, who was invited to perform at the team’s summer concert series, went on an expletive-filled tirade over a bum microphone.

Lavigne took the stage at Tropicana Field following the Ray’s 7-3 loss to the Cleveland Indians and when she faced a serious microphone glitch at the very beginning of her set, she was met with boos from the crowd.

She then went on a profanity-strewn rant to the crowd of 25,000, saying the sound problem “f–king happens on a baseball field.”

The 26-year-old “Complicated” singer had apologized that night (check out the video above), changing her tune to chipper and thanking the team for inviting her to perform.

“We just had so much fun tonight and we want to take the tirade out and say thank you to the Tampa Bay Rays!” she told the crowd. “I’m truly sorry if anyone was offended by my language.”

A team spokesperson later apologized for Lavigne’s behavior.

“The Rays demand profanity-free performances from all of our concert performers, and we are extremely disappointed by the language used in last night’s show,” he said in a statement. “It is not consistent with the atmosphere that Tropicana Field is known for.”

Lavigne, who also threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the game, got it together after the malfunction and performed the rest of her set curse-free.

At least she apologized, but it was one of those apologies were the blame is half-placed on the other party for taking it the wrong way. “Sorry if you were offended” is such a half-assed apology and makes it sound like it’s your fault for taking offense in the first place. It’s not like an official statement though, it’s just something she blurted out later during the show, just like she blurted out the f word at the beginning. Avril has been relatively quietly and presumably sort-of mature lately, especially compared to the period of time when she was regularly spitting on paparazzi and bragging in interviews about beating people up.

OMG, can her style please mature as well? She dresses like a pre-teen.

  2. brin says:

She’s still pretty nasty and how long is she going to be doing the punk look?

  3. Praise St. Angie! says:

not appropriate at a baseball game, but those Tampa folks are a bunch of bible-thumpers.

this is the team that had to change it’s name from the DEVIL Rays (which is an ACTUAL name of a type of sting ray) to simply the Rays because of the protests from the church-ladies. oh, the HORROR!

  4. Emily says:

She better not do that if she ever has a concert in Melbourne, it’s now an on the spot fine for swearing down here. And why hasn’t her style changed in 10 years? Even my mum changes her style more often than she does!

  5. That girl says:

Emily- thanks for the laugh! “even my mum changes her style….”

  6. Quest says:

    I fn hate those boots

  7. the original bellaluna says:

I’d hardly call the use of 1 F-bomb “an expletive-filled tirade.”

Have they ever heard a rap song? Or just a conversation amongst teenagers who think that kind of language is cool?

  8. MarenGermany says:

i never liked her. we are same age and i could never stand her snobby, bratty, ungrateful personality.
    that was years ago.
a couple of weeks ago i really wanted to give her a shot by listening to her new cd but i didnt like it at all. not a single song.
well, she is obviously still playing for larger audiences, so good for her, i guess, but still… ugh.
    I. JUST. CANT. WITH. THAT. WOMAN.

i give her that: the reaction of those people in the audience was rude.
my band and me had similar problems (not infront of 25.000 though 😉 ) and its really not the singers fault if the sound system just sucks.

  9. xxodettexx says:

@Praise St. Angie!: yes, i live here in tampa and the bible-thumping and pearl-clutching is just ludicrous…

and wtf indeed, they think THIS is vulgar?? do they know who avril is??

man i really hate my city some days

  10. Dizzybenny says:

25 000 were at the game but how many stayed to see her?
I know I would have left.

  11. WickedSteppMom says:

Excuse me while I channel my grandmother: She could be such a lovely young woman if she stopped dressing like a Twilight/High School Musical mashup.

  12. original kate says:

when is avril going to apologize for her craptastic music?

  13. Jackson says:

She still looks like Tonya Harding’s little sister to me. And she still dresses like a fool. Twit.

  14. Eve says:

Never liked this brat. I particularly don’t think she said anything bad, but the “sorry IF YOU were offended” is f*cking annoying. It somewhat blames the people SHE should be apologizing to. Just say “I’m sorry I was rude and cursed”. You either apologize properly or not.

    Bitch.

  15. bluhare says:

I think it’s effing hysterical that Avril (my sh*t doesn’t stink) Lavigne is dating Brody Jenner — a KARTRASHIAN!!

  16. Jag says:

What did they expect with hiring her? She’s known for being a potty mouth, crass, rude person. How does she keep getting work?

  17. Sara says:

I hate her shoes in picture of her on the stage… HATE them. They seem very 1997.

  18. almond says:

Good grief, isn’t she in her late 20s or something? Haven’t her first fans matured and moved on? Who still listens to this chick’s “music”?

  19. Deb says:

People still actually pay to see this little twit perform?

  20. Bobby the K says:

Cursing and sport go together like a bat and a ball.

And rock ‘n roll and it’s various incarnations is supposed to be edgy, non conformist, etc.
(even if we don’t like the delivery)

There are a great many ‘safe’ pop acts who could fit this bill, and lip synching would totally remove the risk of something spontaneous happening.

  21. LindaR says:

Gasp. @Jackson, for years I have been trying to think of whom it is she reminds me of and it is Tonya Harding. Good call.

  22. June says:

    Sad Douchette!!

  23. Emese says:

come on! a baseball game! any sport games, without swearing? no way! and if you invite a “rock”star to perform, what you expect anyways?? invite jessica simpson if you want religious wievs lol
And omg, her style is AAAAAWEFUL!

  24. Kim says:

Performed what? complicated? she hasnt had a album or song out since then has she?

  25. Kim says:

26? Why does she dress like a 10 yr old??? Lose the pink glitter and grow up.

  26. Liana says:

someone needs to step away from Hot Topic.

  27. Aly says:

I was there and the people were booing the lack of sound not her personally. She handled the situation by acting like a spoiled brat. People were offended because there were kids in the audience and she showed exactly what every adult wants their kids to see … handle your anger by swearing and throwing a hissy fit.

Btw I’m not a bible thumper.

  28. mhalhuphet says:

    i love avril.

  29. jenna says:

oo soo what she cussed like you guys never do and like you guy have as much talent as her. I LOVE HER, she an amazing singer!!!!!!!!
