Emma Stone in Elle Mag: “I sucked my thumb until I was 11”

emma1

As you know, I really like Emma Stone. I prefer her as a ginger, but I didn’t hate it when she went blonde (presumably for her role in the Spiderman reboot). She’s the July cover girl for Elle Magazine, and it seems like they did the photo shoot before she went back to ginger. Which is fine. But she’s a really attractive young woman, and these photos… well, how difficult is it to take a really flattering photo of her? I didn’t even recognize the cover shot – she looks like Rachel McAdams smelling a fart. There are better photos of her in the Elle slideshow, which makes me wonder if she pissed someone off at Elle for them to use this bad, neckless shot for the cover. Anyway… her interview sounds charming too:

On having braces and wearing glasses while growing up: “And I sucked my thumb until I was 11, so I had this expander in. I was a good-looking kid. I never felt, like, dorky. I was just like, ‘Yup, these are my braces. I’ve had them forever.’”

On not being recognized as easily in public with her new look: “I mean, I haven’t been around very long. I can’t expect everyone to have seen The House Bunny. Oh God. I am having such waves of internal embarrassment, which now I’m admitting on a tape recorder. This is so one of the things I should keep in my head.”

On her obsession with Farmville: “I got to level 42, and I wasn’t doing anything else anymore, so I had to stop.”

On taking up baking in part to control her nervous energy: “It’s very controlled. You know, if you put in the same amount of whatever is in the recipe, it will come out all right.”

On her career: “It’s so funny how different life could have been. I went to so many auditions. I remember my audition for Heroes. I went in right after Hayden Panettiere. Now here we are in this rented house. It feels like it just happened.”

On wanting to be believable in her roles: “I like to look like a person. It drives me crazy when you see women in movies playing teachers, and they have biceps. It totally takes me out of the movie. I start thinking, Wow, that actress playing this part really looks great!”

On declining to talk about her relationship with her former boyfriend, Kieran Culkin: “You have to keep some things sacred…”

On whether celebrity relationships have a shorter shelf life: “I don’t think that’s true. Maybe. But there’s a fair amount that do work….I’m optimistic.”

[From Elle]

She’s so funny. I giggled several times just reading the excerpts. “I can’t expect everyone to have seen The House Bunny.” Classic. Especially considering too many of her contemporaries go on and on about how famous they are and how devastating it is being so incredibly famous. Emma is such a breath of fresh air.

Also – I had no idea she dated Kieran Culkin! It’s not even something I knew at one point and forgot. I never knew it. What the hell? I wonder if Emma, Kieran, Mila Kunis and Macaulay ever double dated. I imagine Mila and Emma would get along really well. That friendship needs to happen!

You got me hooked on her, the Fassbender, and Monica Belluci after reading your posts. Very tasteful and good choices in men and women! And as awesome as Emma Stone is, she can look generic as a blonde. She only stands out as a ginger.

I just watched Easy A yesterday I chuckled through the whole thing. She definitely has IT!! And as a former thumbsucker/braces wearing kid I got to give her props.

  3. Roma says:

Kieran also dated Anna Paquin. I just don’t really get his appeal.

However – I hope every role that Lindsay Lohan ever hoped to get goes straight to Emma. That is all.

  4. Riana says:

Love Emma, truly, don’t think she looks bad on the cover at all OR unrecognizable (is there some quota of mean you need to put into everything you type?) but didn’t Glamour already do the whole sunshine & polka dots look already with Blake Lively? Surprised both spreads look so similar.

Will be buying regardless because she’s gorgeous inside and out (I seriously love how damn good she looks as a blonde and redhead and how you could swear both colors were natural).

Kaiser, there is a video of Mila and Emma together at the golden globe, I think they are already friends (and they played in the same movie zombieland, Mila had a cameo as a zombie). Here’s the link: http://imperialbedrooms.tumblr.com/post/2788655990
They are so cute !!! I love these two girls. They are my favorite with Carey Mulligan and Saoirse Ronan.

  6. Kaiser says:

Thanks Angie & Nina! They’re so cute. I love that they’re friends.

  7. Caz says:

Teachers with biceps? Is that a dig at Cameron Diaz in Bad Teacher??
Love Emma stone!! She has the best voice, she’s totally my girl crush 🙂

  8. cle says:

She’s so cute- but not really good actress. Funny, and sweet, and my fav red carpet star, but that’s it. Would be perfect in something like sex and the city…

  9. Rhiley says:

She is awesome. I like her looks when she is a little more full figured (I hate that description full figured though). She looks so cool, independent, confident when she is a size 6/8. But a size 2/4 (as she appears to look in these pictures) and she looks like a little like Lindsay Lohan. I wonder if industry insiders say, “Emma Stone is who Lindsay Lohan could’ve been if she weren’t swimming in vodka filled Red Bull can.”

  10. Isa says:

I thought it was a dig at Diaz too! Haha. Well maybe not really a dig…she did say that she looked good.

  11. TQB says:

Love her. She was terrific in Zombieland. Glad to hear she’s gone back to ginger. I hope all the comparisons to Lohan don’t creep her out, but I agree with @Roma, I hope she gets all the great roles LL could have had.

  12. futureperfect says:

She’s likely smart enough that she’s familiar with the way the industry works: she’s the Lindsay Lohan reboot, but a much improved model. I never got Lohan’s appeal, but Emma Stone definitely has the “it” factor. I hope she’s around for a long time and gets every role she fancies.

  13. kieslowski says:

I watched Easy A and thought she was fantastic, I think she has real potential, kind of bummed “The Help” is being released in August – the dump land for movies, although Inglerious BAsterds was an exception.

    Relly rooting for her.

  14. Ari says:

    I love the House Bunny!

  15. Nic says:

UMMMM hello! she totally took a jab at Cameron Diaz, which is hysterical. A TEACHER with BICEPS… who else had that role recently??? I love when people call out others in such a passive aggressive way. Suprise you didn’t pick up on that one!

  16. StephanieMarie says:

OH hecks yes she is calling out Cammy-D, which makes me a little bummed as I like both actresses…
And sometimes there ARE teachers with biceps…

We nicknamed my grade 11 math teacher “Mighty Mouse” because she was the most muscular (albeit short) woman…

    Muscles+Teaching= a requirement in some neighborhoods 😛

  17. lucy2 says:

I like her, hope she continues to do well.
Lohan must cry a bucket of vodka and Red Bull tears every time Emma gets a role or a magazine cover!

  18. Katija says:

My lady gym teacher in HS had huge freaking biceps. Just sayin’.

  19. Kim says:

She seems nice enough in this interview but something about her personality bugs me. I could see her going the route of January Jones who gets 1 decent role and thinks they are an Oscar caliber actress.

  20. C-DUB says:

    Love her!!

  21. anons says:

really like her. although these pics are almost unrecognizable. getting the michelle williams vibe. she looks so much better as a ginger, imo.

  22. Emily says:

@anons, I thought she looked like Michelle Williams on the cover shot, too. It’s the red lippie with that mustard yellow dress, I think. Anyway, I very much hope Emma and Mila are friends, they’re two of my favourite celebrity crushes at the moment.

  23. ToastedSkin says:

I love how down to earth she seems.
