For the month of July, Beyonce pulled out all of the stops and did two major editorials and covers, likely to promote her fourth album, which is now rumored to be in the midst of a Fall push-back. But no matter about the album – look at the pretty pictures. Or not so pretty, whatever your take. Beyonce appears on the cover of both Dazed & Confused AND W Magazine for July. For D&C, she’s got the blonde hair, but most of the better-quality scans I could find were of the W Magazine shoot (the ones with the longer weave, mostly pulled into a ponytail), so most of the pics here are from W. Here are some highlights from various interviews:
Beyonce on being an icon: “Being an icon is my dream. It has a lot of responsibilities. I feel like every time I take a picture and every time I perform on stage, I am conscious of my legacy. I’m conscious of the fact it’s going to be around even when I’m not… There are certain things that I just couldn’t do because I’ve worked so hard for my legacy and my career. Probably harder than anyone I know. So I respect it and I take it very seriously.”
On taking some time off from music: “I needed some time to live. I’ve been signed to the same label since I was 12 years old and never had more than a month and a half off since I was 13. I’ve worked so hard for so many years and just felt like, ‘Well, why not?’” she told Dazed & Confused about taking time away from the music industry.
More on her time off: “I had talked about taking a vacation before, but always ended up in the studio after two weeks, so no one believed me. This time, though, I was serious. I was going to give myself a year to do the things I never get to do. Simple things like play with my nephew, pick him up from school, visit museums, go to concerts, see some Broadway shows, learn to cook a meal and spend time with my husband … Yes, I needed some relaxation, but I wanted inspiration too, from regular everyday things.”
By the way, I’ve just spent way too much time looking at these Beyonce photos, and I’m going to reiterate what I’ve been saying for a few months now: bitch got tweaked. Her face is different, and it’s a subtle difference, but it’s the result of something surgical, or perhaps fillers and injections. My guess is that she got very subtle rhinoplasty, some ’Tox in her forehead, and definitely something in her lips. She still looks like Beyonce, but it’s… different. I’m glad she really has left that gawdy cocktail/wedding/engagement ring behind. It’s as distracting as rappers with diamond crusted kid’s cartoon characters around their necks.
I sometimes feel so sorry for her, like all that stuff about being iconic and a legend, it just sounds exhausting. Virtually every icon I can think of became so as a by product of living a sincere life not as part of some diabolical carefully contrived plot. Every one from Marilyn Monroe to Mahatma Gandhi, they were just living their lives doing something they loved or believed in, the icon stuff just happened.
Looking at these terrible pics, I can’t help but get the feeling that Beyonce is on her way out.

If she is on the way out, I wonder why. Maybe it’s related to the way these female singers feel that they have to compete with the cheapness of Lady GaGa and won’t stoop to that level, and good on them.

Then there’s Madonna desperately trying to hang on to her youth (in her underwear), Shakira pole dancing (in her underwear) because she can’t write a catchy melody anymore, Britney being medicated just to get her on stage (in her underwear), Whitney suffering from emphysema & Christina stumbling around with a bloodstream that’s 40% proof (thankfully not yet in her underwear).

I agree with other posters about competing with GaGa. You can practically see the desperation coming off these photos in waves. She’s done and should just run along and be Mrs. Jay-Z and call it a day.

@rraven, exactly! she’s always rubbed me the wrong way. i think it’s her try-hard and she just seems to do things (singing, “acting”) for accolades, not because she actually enjoys them or is even good at them.

Most of these shots don’t even look like her. I thought it was someone else when I clicked on the link, going “Who the heck is that?” If not for the psychedelically bad fashions and that ridiculous belly chain, I’d never have known it was her.
Well those were photoshopped from hell and back…she almost looks Badu-ish in a couple of these. She probably just got those smile ( ) lines filled in.

I don’t know what kind of music you’re into but here’s a short list of amazing, uncompromising, talented divas: Allison Goldfrapp, Allison Mossheart (The Kills, Dead Weather), Joanna Newsom, Florence (Florence and the Machine- not my fave musically, but she’s admirable) Beth Ditto (Gossip) and there are many more. Dive down the diva rabbit hole!

My friend and I was were having a discussion recently about the trend of instant iconoclasm among this new generation of celebrities, most of them of them devoid of the talent or it-factor to even achieve it. For people of the past like Michael Jackson, it just came as a natural by-product. For this new crow of pathetic famewhores, however, it’s the end goal.
