Sorry, but had to comment. I'm a riding instructor and that is the biggest load of BS I've heard (at least recently). The theory (heel in line with the hip) would do little to nothing to prevent most types of fall (it's also pretty outdated). There is no absolute 'safety zone' while horse riding but most falls cause no injury or very minor ones. Mr Reeve was just very very unlucky, and to suggest otherwise is misguided and ignorant. If she were right, then the top tier professionals would have found her magic method of staying on and would never fall off, which they do from time to time. Don't believe me? Watch a top level three day event and count the falls. Three or four people will normally come off, and almost all of the time they're uninjured. Falls that cause massive injury are very rare, but falling off happens from time to time. She was so wrong I'm angry as hell that someone who clearly knows only a little about the subject would dare to comment that arrogantly about something that ruined a mans life.
Nerd attack over, please continue with your day.

Rich how is she right? I mean, do we know that he was not sitting right on the saddle and that's why he fell? Statistically she could be right, but I want to know how she is right in this case. Do you have evidence that Reeve was sitting incorrecly in his saddle or that he somehow spooked the horse? Did anyone say anything to that effect that wasn't just speculation?

This is a little personal for me because sometimes I need a wheelchair and I know what it's like to be in one. Blaming someone in a chair for their problem is f'ing weak, in my opinion. It also helps people feel distant from the person in the chair, like "oh, it was their fault, that could never happen to me." Because people who can't deal with it either stare or look away and you can see on their face that they don't want to think about it.

Even if someone had an accident or whatever, even if your dad was drunk and driving, it's not right to blame the person and it does nothing to address the problem.

Tough learning curve?! Life is random. Some people get screwed and some get lucky. Of course people are successful or miserable based on their outlook and the amount of work they do, but you can't discount random accidents. Neither Reeve or your dad "had it coming."

Thank you for listening to my rant.

My dad has been in a chair for 31 years, and it was his fault and has been on the Federal payroll since, (disability). He was in a car and was liquored up and hit a tree. Reeve was on a horse in a jumping event...there is risk...he feel and that was that. His foundation did nothing for my dad nor did he expect it to. Reeve made a mistake and sometimes there is a tought learning curve in life. The fact that she brought it up and you people love him...doesnt change the fact that she is right. All she did was call a spade a spade and that is it.

Ipek,
I hope you didn't write that. The piece itself is really ignorant. (Not the writer/you, just the writing.) I didn't embrace health causes either until I got terribly ill. Hopefully it's just mean-spirited satire, but even so it's in terrible taste.

Not a fan, that's a good point! Marines I don't really want to see it, thanks. I did see Christopher Reeve in person after his accident. He was at the Air and Space Museum in Washington in Fall, 2003. He was smiling a lot and looked really happy. When we left I was telling everyone in line "Christopher Reeve's in there!"
