‘Transformers’ positively kills ‘Larry Crowne’ at the box office, Julia Roberts who?

transformers3-1

It was never a question of what movie would end up in the #1 position at the box office over the holiday weekend but only how high the numbers would go. In this case, Transformers: Dark of the Moon made $97.4 million for a five-day total of $162.1 million over the lengthy holiday weekend; in doing so, T3 has effectively broken the Independence Day weekend record that was previously held by the likes of Spider-Man 2, which (consequently) is now only semi-memorable for the moment when Kirsten Dunst nipped out while screaming for Tobey Maguire to rescue her damsel-in-distress self from certain demise.

Of course, Transformers 3 was exactly the type of mindless movie that everyone hoped it would be, and it even threw in a few anti-Megan Fox jokes for the benefit of all fans of The Oral History of Michael Bay; that is, if there are any Bay fans at all who don’t just go for the explosions. Certainly, Bay had a hand in the fact that Sam Witwicky’s (Shia LeBeouf) pet robots made explicit mention that his ex-girlfriend, Michaela (Fox), was super mean to them, which resulted in the robots’ declaration that they’re incredibly happy that she was no longer present in their lives (and, by extension, the franchise’s third installment). Yeah, keep stoking that fire, Bay, and stroking your own dong in the process.

Paramount’s latest Transformers: Dark Of The Moon is the giant #1 movie after opening with some 3D-only nighttime sneaks on Tuesday ($5.5M), followed by a full release into 4,013 theaters on Wednesday ($37.7M) and Thursday ($21.4M). Now Friday brings in a big $32.8M, and Saturday $34M. As of Friday, that’s still -24% behind 2009’s Transformers 2 ($98M vs $128M) despite TF3‘s higher 3D ticket prices. Michael Bay’s robot actioner should near $100M domestic this three-day weekend, and $180M through the Fourth of July. “We expected to start behind the last one,” a Paramount exec tells me. “This one has an ‘A’ CinemaScore and better reviews, so it should play to a better multiple.”

Transformers: Dark Of The Moon could break these July 4th holiday box office records: 3-DAY RECORD (bettering Spider-Man 2‘s $88.2M); 4-DAY RECORD (bettering Spider-Man 2’s $115.8M), 5-DAY RECORD (bettering Twilight Saga: Eclipse‘s $157.6M).

In second place was Cars 2, which added an additional $25.1 million for a total of $116.0 million after two weekend. In third place (and also in its second weekend) was Bad Teacher, which paired Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake in a raunchy R-rated comedy with $14.1 million for a total of $59.5 million. Besides the latest Tranformers flick, there were two other openers this weekend. One of them, Larry Crowne, landed in fourth place with a measly $13.0 million, which is positively abysmal considering that the movie starred two A-listers, Tom Hanks and Julia “Bitchface” Roberts (perhaps she’ll have slightly better luck with that ill-fated Snow White reboot). In fifth place, Monte Carlo took in merely $7.6 million, which solidifies the fact that getting one’s toes rubbed by Justin Bieber has done absolutely nothing for Selena Gomez’s big-time Hollywood feature film career.

I took the kids to Transformers 3D and it was definitely the best one action and effects-wise to date. It was like you are right there in the fights! Glad it was worth the 3 people for $36 price! YIKES!

  2. Rita says:

In that top pic, what is Shia grabbing for with his left hand?

Perhaps all the pastry biscuits were gone by the time he arrived for the shoot. Remember Shia, the early bird catches the worm…or should I direct that to Rosie. (Direct? No pun intended…least ways not a humorous one)

    @Eileen-Nice to see you!!!

  3. girl says:

People love sexist, racist, stupid action films and since they made it a number one film we’ll get more of that crap.

  4. Sue says:

I took my nieces and their 4 friend to see Transformers 3D and they thought it was fantastic, my youngest nice who not normally into movies like this couldn’t keep her eyes off it. We went on Tuesday for a 9:00 showing which was pack and the 12 O’clock showing had a line around the corner.

  5. Eve says:

He’s (Bay) truly obsessed with Megan Fox.

Will not watch this (the first was enough and I still regret having watched it, because I could be one of those who say “I have never seen a Michael Bay movie” proudly…bah!).

    EDIT:

Yeah, keep stoking that fire, Bay, and stroking your own dong in the process.

You know that he probably does that (for real).

  6. Alix says:

“Larry Crowne” is also one of the dullest movie titles ever. I mean — zzzzzzzz.

  7. tapioca says:

I noticed the stupid & sexist, but is it racist – the bad guys are the Decepticons surely?

@Eileen: 3 tickets for Transformers 3D on a Saturday afternoon in London cost my flatmate and her friends the equivalent of $66. (Almost) double YIKES!

I think I’ll wait for the high quality internet download, ahem…

  8. zesty says:

I read that the actress from “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” cowrote the script with Hanks. Why wasn’t she in Roberts’ part? Not a big enough star? I would’ve actually gone to see it if someone else was the leading lady.

  9. katnip says:

I can say that I have never paid to see Transformers. Not bragging but there you go.

regarding Larry Crowne.. the title was just so MEH.. and I don’t like the chick that co-wrote it so not upset that is didn’t do well.

The trailer looked terrible and so contrived. I didn’t buy the premise at all. Tom should have picked someone else. He and Julia don’t have sexual chemistry together at all. Friendship chemistry but not sexual.

Please Harry Potter rescue me from the tragedies at the BO the next 2 weeks..

July 15th can’t come soon enough.

I havent spent a dime on any of those movies (franchises) and im planning on keeping it that way.
Seriusly summer movies sucks the only *BO hit* i liked in since i was old enought to be intrested was the (first)
    Fast & Furius.

  11. the original bellaluna says:

Yeah, I don’t do 3-D. Gives me migraines or makes me boot. No thanks, I’ll wait for the DVD or HBO or something…

  12. Mia says:

I didn’t see Transformers 2 because of the racist/sterotypical robots. Thankfully, they are gone. The movie was typical Bay with lingering shots of Rosie’s ass & lips, but other than that it was really good.

The “anti-Megan” jokes aren’t even anti-Megan. The robots were annoying and they didn’t like her because she didn’t like them. The only other times her character was referenced was in the context of her dumping Shia’s character. Shia & Bay are jerks, but they don’t really waste too much time discussing/bashing Megan’s character in the movie.

  13. Dhavy says:

I was dragged by my b/f because he likes all the action crap which I wished they had more of that than all the stupid dialogue. Shia was more annoying than ever (including his parents) and this Rose girl looks dumber than a rock. The concept of those two being a couple was ridiculous and as a mentioned before she has a knockout body but she’s fug

  14. Lisa says:

Larry Crowne’s bad showing was more a result of the lame-looking plot, as shown through a series of lame trailers, than lack of star power. I love Tom Hanks, but I’m not going to see him in a movie in which he (apparently, according to the trailers) gets laid off from the equivalent of Wal-Mart after having been employee of the month eight times in a row because (apparently) he didn’t go to college.(??) Granted, that may not be exactly how the plot works out (I haven’t seen the movie), but seriously? Is that not one of the lamest concepts for a movie that is, given the age of its stars, supposed to be about, and more importantly for, adults?

  15. Quest says:

@ the original bellaluna: ITA …all this 3D crap annoys the hell out of me and gives me migranes as well, so I will wait for the DVD release – my husband is a hugh fan

Anxiously awaiting the final installment of H.P. as well

  16. Leticia says:

Rosie is tall and Shia is short. I bet he had to wear KISS style platform boots during shooting.

  17. Pyewacket says:

I saw an interview with Rosie and I have to say, I really like this girl. She is pretty and witty.

So glad Roberts film is a flop. Maybe she won’t be getting more offers if her movies keep taking. (keeping fingers crossed).

  18. really says:

Julia is old news, Rosie is new news….fresh, exciting and alluring.

  19. nnn says:

    @ 16

I saw an interview with Rosie. Rosie is 5’9″ tall, Shia is a little bit taller than her if she doesn’t wear high heels.

She was refering to having high heels during the kissing scene included where she asked Bay to take off her heels because she felt unfeminine kissing Shia who was therefore shorter than her.

Bay replied that she had to keep her heels on to give hope to all the US short men out there.

Bay is trully obssessed with pairing beautiful girls and average looking guys.

  20. Turtle Dove says:

Like other people on this board, I won’t waste 1¢ of my money on this dreck.

This movie may have done well at the box office this weekend, but it is WELL BELOW the last TF on opening day box office. TF2 is #4 best opening and TF3 is #21.

  21. Amanda G says:

I adore Tom Hanks, but his new movie does not look interesting at all.

Saw Bad Teacher. It was okay. Best parts were in the previews.

  22. nnn says:

    @ Turtle Dove.

The movie is set to reach 600 mlillions abroad only and has a shot at 1 billion globally.

The Hollywood Reporter site said that on the domestic front, it is now at 6 % behind TF2 after beginning modestly but rising fast while on the overseas one it’s a monster with 55 % ahead of TF2 and several records breaking per countries.

I don’t like those movies but let’s be fair, it’s a fact that it has already broken several records including 3rd biggest weekend of all time, globally speaking.

It will pass TF2 easily and again, according analysts has a shot at reaching 1 billions at the end of its run.

  23. Lady says:

I liked the Transformers and I thought Rosie wasn’t bad at all. I actually enjoyed her more than I enjoyed Megan.

  24. LucyOriginal says:

I guess I was in good spiritis when I saw Larry Crowne, I liked it (aside from Julia Roberts). I saw Monte Carlo too and it is a cute movie.

  25. sara says:

I loved TF3, especially Rosie in it. She did a good job.

  26. Liyah says:

Umm this should probably say “Tom Hanks who?” Julia’s last movie, that was only targeted towards privileged white women made over 80 million just last year and over 220 million worldwide.

This movie was written, produced, and directed by Tom Hanks and many reviews said Julia is the best thing about the movie.

BTW, I guarantee that Julia’s ‘Snow White’ with Tarsem Singh is going to be huge.

  27. Turtle Dove says:

nnn (22) Not to be mean, but… yeah… not caring. ‘Cry-BAY-b’ and LaDouche can go f*ck themselves cause those b*tches will get none of my money.

I don’t support men who are abusive towards women, be it physical, emotional, verbal, etc.

  28. ZenB!tch says:

RE: Larry Crowne… I’m 41 years old. I thought it skewed to “old” for me. I might have been interested with another male lead. As it was, it had “only if its on Netflix Streaming” written all over it.

RE: Transformers: I want my hour back. The part between the moon-landing and the destruction of Chicago. I didn’t hate Rosie at all but I just could not believe she would ever be interested in Shia or his whiny character. I bought Megan because she was so trashy that she was dating up – his being middle class compensated for her looks and *ahem*brains*ahem*. It made them more believable.

My Bay bashing is all about his use of Rosie (I don’t think Shia is his fault – Indy 4): All she did was scream and get in the way. Once the action got going, he even forgot to shoot her like an object so all she did was run in heels, she never fought once – except for that cool scene where she called Megatron Sentinel’s bitch. THAT Rosie would have rocked. I really think I liked 2 better – all robots less Shia.

You hit it right on the head. Bay’s “fans” only go for the explosions and now they are in 3D. W00T! I don’t have to deal with 4th of July fireworks parking anymore.

  29. ZenB!tch says:

Oh as for the $$$ – I don’t know how to quantify it anymore. Paramount was brilliant by doing the world premieres first. Pirates 4 has made 1B worldwide while most Americans avoided it. Some analysts are saying there is no way T3 will hit the $ T2 made. I don’t think we can say anymore, until the global receipts are out.

PS: I don’t think I saw one ad for Monte Carlo. I saw more ads for Larry Crowne than I ever saw for T3. And I stand by Tom Hanks being the weak spot. I’m not Julia’s biggest fan and I’ve out grown rom-coms but she was not the problem. She was also not the title character. She doesn’t look like a “Larry”

  30. ZenB!tch says:

    @nnn #19

Bay is trully obssessed with pairing beautiful girls and average looking guys.
    ——–

Not really, the Transformers series was the first use of an ugly man and a skanky woman – before he had Ben Affleck, Ewan McGregor and Will Smith as his leads. You have to go back to the Rock to find the creepy Nick Cage as his lead and I think people still liked him in 1995. I may be missing a few since I haven’t seen all his films but Shia is the only short, wimpy lead I remember. Megan is the only trashy one. I really think Shia was Spielberg’s fault* – which makes Bay a bigger “insert word for a cat here” than he was when he made Pearl Harbor.

Ironically, that is why I avoid all the Judd Apatow movies. I find them horribly sexist and the men are even less appealing than Shia.

*I’m obsessed with the horror that was Indy 4. So much so that I couldn’t even laugh at 50 year old Scientologist action hero Tom Cruise. He could be Indy’s son, why not? I still want my 3 hours and money back for that one.

  31. nnn says:

    @ Turtle Dove

I can understand that and respect your choice.

I just wanted to correct you about the impression that you gave about this movie doing much less than the previous one when apparently it’s on track to be the most financially successful one.

  32. Shoe_Lover says:

I love Leighton Meester’s dress in the picture from Monte Carlo. and i love the luggage too!

  33. Chris says:

It has a rating of 38% on Rotten Tomatoes. That is all.

  34. not a fan says:

I’m starting to get really uncomfortable with the level of vitriol directed at Megan Fox. Yes, she was foolish and ran her mouth like a spoiled, entitled, classless fool. And now her career is pretty much dead. Maybe if she is appropriately humble and takes some acting classes she’ll be able to get some work.

But for Michael Bay to use her as a punching bag is getting really old, and all the male cronies are joining in. First he put her in her place when she started saying ridiculous things. Well, she earned it. Then he has some lines in the current movie about her. Ok, fine. But they keep going on and on about her as if she is some horrible person, when Shia LaBeouf has bad-mouthed his own movies and pulled a number of drunken shenanigans and gotten away with it. And, oh yeah, Shia slept with her and had to tell everyone, because hey she’s trash and used goods. I feel sorry for her, getting bullied like this. It’s clear that Michael Bay is a misogynistic douchetard. But I honestly expected better of Stephen Spielberg and Shia.

I guess Hollywood women aren’t saying anything because it’s Bay and Spielberg and it’s not like she can act anyway.

She’s a stupid girl who got too impressed with herself and had a big fall. But I don’t think she deserves to be destroyed over and over and over again.

    Poor thing.

  35. Original Bee says:

I’ve always liked Tom Hanks. It’s ashamed this movie did so badly because I’d love to see more of him. Mrs. Danny Moder, not so much.

  36. Camille says:

I am super happy that Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks film flopped. 😀

    As for the rest, meh.

  37. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

My husband also dragged me to see this; and if I hadn’t been so desperate for adult time, I would have protested his movie choice. A couple of things caught my attention. First, Rosie and Shia had ZERO chemistry. Second, the jokes at Foxs expense; INCLUDING the use of the word Nazi
    ****movie spoiler below*******

(during the scene where the autobots were boarding the space shuttle when they were being
exiled). Surprised no one else mentioned that.

  38. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

@the original Bella @Quest, I’m with you on the 3D migraines!

  39. Mick says:

I would not waste my money or my time watching Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts.

Julia is really showing her age, she needs to be the mother of one of the younger actresses. She can’t get away with being funny anymore. She is an old hen. As for Tom Hanks, there are so many cute, younger guys, why see a movie with Tom Hanks? IMO….

  40. normades says:

Sigh, Leighton, you are better than this. Please get a new agent and stylist soon. You deserve better projects (and clothes).

  41. Ari says:

I have to say I loved every freaking minute of Transformers 3 and Rosie actually can act – its sad but I prefer her acting over Blake Lively’s and it has changed my opinion of her entirely. Plus love her accent. Of course, I watched this after 3 glasses of vino so don’t judge me.

  42. Katie says:

These guys are truly disgusting. Karma is a bitch and Michael Bay and company will definately get theirs one day. I’m so proud i can actually say that i’ve never seen a single Bay or Shia Labeouf movie.

  43. Carolyn says:

Reviews are now coming in about how bad the acting is in Transformers. Already Jason Statham is being touted as the next male lead. Shia has no chemistry with any of the ladies.

  44. I believe that is among the such a lot vital information for me. And i’m glad reading your article. However want to remark on few basic things, The site taste is wonderful, the articles is actually great : D. Good job, cheers
