Emma Watson in satin & linen Bottega Veneta: beautiful or overwhelming?

wenn3433711

As you already saw from CB’s post about the dudes of Harry Potter, last night was the big New York City premiere of the last Harry Potter film. EVER. Much like the London premiere, Emma Watson decided to go all out and just wear a giant ball gown for her premiere. This gown is Bottega Veneta Fall 2011, and I kind of dislike the whole look. I think if the dress was either/or – all bronze satin or all beige linen, I might have loved it, but putting the two fabrics together in this odd way, on such a petite young girl… it overwhelms her. Plus, her MAKEUP. It’s WAY too much. I think she even has some kind of metallic appliqués on her eyelids…? She looks like she has two sparkly black eyes.

Earlier in the day, Emma made an appearance at The Late Show, and she chose another befuddling ensemble. This sparkly little dress is Balmain Fall 2011, and she paired it with Louboutin wedges. UGH WEDGES. I’m not opposed to wedges when you put them with jeans or another casual look, but with a sparkly cocktail dress? At least her makeup is so much better with this look.

    Oh, honey. NO.

  2. brin says:

It’s a bizarre dress. I get that she’s into haute couture but this is just wrong on her. It looks like the skirt is falling off.

  3. birdie says:

Her premiere dress is not something you see every day, I like it on her and I like that she is taking risks.
But the wedges don´t fit to the dress at all!!

  4. gee says:

I dont think the slicked back hair is good. The makeup is too dark, but I don’t hate it, and I LOVE the dress. It’s different.. weird in a great way. When she’s not dressing like an ice skater, she picks some interesting pieces.

  5. Tammy says:

She really pulls this off. This is one tricky dress which only few people can successfully wear .Emma is the only one who can carry anything. She will look stylish even in a bin bag

  6. Chloe says:

What she wears is sometimes over the top but rarely in bad taste so I’m willing to cut her some slack, especially as she’s so young. She’s probably always been the smart, responsible one, so I’m not blaming her for wanting to look like a doll and wear some pretty dresses now. I just hope it passes at some point. Plus, she still has to prove that she can actually act.

  7. embertine says:

Actually love it, although I do see what you mean…. it looks to me as if it is a concept dress, the concept in this case being dressmaker’s dummy swathed in fabric? It works for me, and fits her beautifully. I would have preferred it with the satin in another colour though.

  8. Dorothy#1 says:

I love the gold dress and her hair and makeup!!! I think it is her best one so far 🙂

  9. Marianne says:

I love the sparkly dress. But I hate the other dress. Which is a shame because I think Emma usually dresses really cute.

  10. Cherry says:

I love the eye make up and the color of the dress, but not the dress itself. I mean, come on. It just looks like a bathing suit with a few pieces of loose cloth stapled on.

  11. Micki says:

    Don’t like it

  12. Michelle says:

I think she looks amazing in each of the dresses.

Or maybe i’m just not feeling too critical yet. It’s early.

  13. Lila says:

Ugh, looks like she glued halves of two different dresses together.

  14. Jackson says:

What a shame they couldn’t finish her gown in time for the premiere. Ugh. No.

  15. Rosi says:

don’t know. but since i saw her in that cast picture where everybody else was normally dressed and she was dressed up so that she could outshine the others… i don’t like her any more. don’t like those dresses either.

  16. Kaboom says:

Looks like a three stage rocket of bronze meringue, half finished linen bodice and raccoon eye payload.

  17. LipstickGurl says:

Looks like a wardrobe malfunction. The top is young, edgy and haute but I’m not sure what the bottom of the dress is.

  18. cookb says:

Ridiculous. She struggles so hard to be a fashion icon and it just isn’t working

  19. Stephie says:

I like the sparkly dress but not the burlap/satin looking one. Her eyes are way too dark but I do like her hair that way. Very neat and it showcases her beautiful little face.

Hermione all growed up! Awww 🙂

  20. ladybert62 says:

EGADS! That dress is horrendous – that makeup is horrendous and that hairdo is horrendous. Even the second sparkly dress is awful. Total fashion failure.

  21. Laura says:

Love love love love love!! Both. I love the bronze one better. I do think it overwhelms her a bit and I’d like to see it on someone a little bit more statuesque, but I think it’s just gorgeous.

  22. madpoe says:

Is there a follow up to the “Black Swan”? the “Gold Swan that was a disco duckling” she tries tho she tries.

  23. dorothy says:

An amazing dress. She really ‘gets it’. Very fashion forward.

  24. mel says:

These young actresses are so pretty..they don’t need to try so hard. So much prettier when they go simple. But..I also don’t think the photos translate the overall image very well either. Thats why I love Kristen Stewart…(I know I know) but she – most of the time – looks her age and not overdone.

  25. Judy says:

She’s GORGEOUS, but that first dress is just weird beyond imagination.

  26. Lady D says:

ladybert62 pretty much covered what I was thinking, almost word for word. (EGADS was quite funny.)

  27. Nanea says:

I have yet to find a pair of Louboutins that I like. But these awful wedges take the cake.

The BV dress looks like the linen part was to go under the rest of the fabric that hangs around her hips, as if the whole thing isn’t quite finished yet.

  28. annaloo says:

The look is a lot more conceptual than typical, I like it.

As for the makeup, she looks like she’s channeling a modern day Edie Sedgwick, so she gets a thumbs up from me.

  29. Ellie says:

LOVE HER STYLE! she’s always the best dressed and she’s adorable.

  30. junk573r says:

Hey Kaiser & Celebitchy? I’d love to see a back view of Emma’s hair when it’s not slicked back. I’ve been scanning for one on thousands of websites. I am currently growing my pixie out and I think how she’s doing it looks really awesome so far but I cannot figure out how she wears the back. Greatly appreciated!

  31. bored says:

    I love both looks

  32. John Wayne Lives says:

I don’t really like the permier dress, but she still looks amazing in a way I can’t quite figure out lol. Love the hair and make up! The whole package is fun and fashion forward, and I love that she wants to play with her look.
The sparkly dress is just beautiful! But I think softer, more feminine hair would have balanced it out more. Just a bit to costumy. Shoes – ick, but she pulls it off…
    And I love Hermoine 😀

  33. original kate says:

she looks fantastic pretty much every time i see her.

  34. Embee says:

I think the first dress is really interesting and fits her beautifully. It’s not “pretty” but I like it. The second is ok to me, but seems a bit tight in the top, like it is cutting into her shoulder area. Ouch.

The wedges are a bit clumpy for the ensemble but would look great with jeans.

  35. phlyfiremama says:

Flawless! Its not just the men of HP who have grown up & gotten hot, ya know. I want her to be Hermoine forever, too~

  36. k says:

love both dresses. the wedges would have worked if they weren’t cork

  37. dani says:

She looks great! loved the makeup in the first pics!!

  38. Patricia says:

Pretty girl – great figure – looks like dump 90% of the time.

    I just don’t understand.

  39. Susan says:

Love the whole thing! Dress is gorgeous! It is her last Harry Potter film, let her go ALL OUT!

  40. Esmeralda says:

I’m not crazy about the dress and the hair and makeup are starting to remind me of Joel Grey in Cabaret. She’s a cute girl but this look is just “meh!”

  41. lrm says:

hate to say it, but Emma has been looking rough lately….

there’s an edge to her that bespeaks a bad lifestyle choice of some sort….

and it’s sad b/c she always seemed so grounded, and then off to college, etc.

now, it’s try-hard and trying to transition to adult star, when maybe she needed a few years away for the most part to mature a bit both in life and on screen….
liike joseph gorden levitt-he made the transition successfully, but there were a few in between years that were slow in terms of roles….

anyway, wish her well, but those pics of her being led by harvey fat f*ck what’s his name??? DISTURBING to say the least.
That is not the crew to be with….even if it does get you a film role or two.

  42. T.C. says:

That premiere “dress” looks like a regular dress with some last minute gold curtains taped on at the bottom. It also makes her stand out in a gaudy way while the rest of the cast looks classy. Love Emma but this was a major fail. The dress to Letterman looks like a flashback to the 80’s. Emma, please fire your stylist honey you are too pretty to be looking this awful.

  43. TL says:

You guys see her on letterman talking about drinking and getting drunk. Dave in his classic fashion got the truth out of her. She was squirming and awkward and when she finally said yes I drink and get drunk, she stood up and took a bow. Maybe we should ahve dave interview her more often. maybe we’d get some real truth for once.

  44. Brisbanegirl says:

I can’t believe no one mentioned the bruise on her neck. Lovebite?

  45. Ron says:

I absolutely love the Bottega Venetta dress, truly cool high fashion, and she carries it beautifully! The Balmain is really cool, but the shoes are a miss with the dress and throw the look off. Wedges with cocktail dresses are a mistake.

  46. Sandy says:

Are you sure those are wedges and not heels made to look like wedges? That’s what they look like to me but I could be wrong.

  47. bugsy says:

She looks amazing. Yeah, it’s a bit more artsy, but she looks like a total knockout. Good job, Emma!

  48. Flounder says:

I saw her today! She looks so gorgeous in person!

  49. Patricia says:

Love the pic of her smiling!!!

I wish she’d do that more often – she looks beautiful and SO appealing when she smiles. Most of the time she looks stressed, uncomfortable, and completely miserable – really strange.

I know she’s young but honestly if she’s that miserable maybe she just needs to find a different line of work.

Learn to fake it at the very least honey – please!!!

Maybe she got it at the strip club she went to the night before?

  51. kikay says:

This girl is becoming so insecure of herself by trying so hard to be the best dresser or whatever she’s trying to accomplish among her colleague. But with all her trying she always end up copying Kristen Stewart simple elegant way of dressing. That one shoulder Balmain cocktail dress in David Letterman,Kristen wear that already on her Eclipse premier in LA,and Kristen wear it better with better shoes and simple make up.Emma is a beautiful girl ,no question ask but she has to try to be herself more and stop being a shadow of somebodyelse ,for sure she’s got an attitude for it,her bithface is already plastered on her face.

  52. Tammy says:

    Hello no 51
Emma doesnt have to copy kristen stewart who is just a trash. One shoulder dress is not the trademark of Kristen. Thousands before her wore it. Thousands after her will wear it. Point is Emma can carry anything even the worst dress elegantly. She is the only one who can pull off this pixie cut hairstyle. Imagine Kristen in this hairstyle. People will have to run and hide because it will bring out the trashiness of stutter stewart. Just see runaways. Designers are queuing for emma to wear their dresses. Nobody wants Kristen as she cannot pull off all designs successfully. She only gets leftovers or just 2-3 same designs. Plus emma is an excellent actress, too articulate and sophisticated.Kristen is no actress.Cannot say a sentence correctly without stuttering or lip biting or breathing heavily. She cannot even act out of a paper bag if her life depended on it. Who are you kidding. Emma since her teens has been a fashion icon and brand ambassador for high end brands. Why should she follow a tailor trash. Remember Kristens MTV safety pin dress. She just had to wait on the roadside.Everything would have fallen to places.

  53. Ashley says:

I love this look on her. I agree with Annaloo, she really does look like edie sedgwick.

  54. sarah says:

Cant wait until Emma, Kristen and Blake Lively’s careers are over. Way too overhyped with little talent at acting. Sure they’re all pretty but there are many pretty, and prettier girls out there.

Jennifer Lawrence, Hailee Steinfeld and Dakota Fanning represent the new young Hollywood… those with talent

  55. asdfghjll; says:

The “lovebite” is just the shadow of her earring…
