Contagion trailer featuring Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law

A new trailer for the thriller Contagion by director Steven Soderbergh has been released and it just looks incredible. It’s about a virus that quickly spreads throughout the world, killing everyone in its wake. There’s so much talent in this movie including my imaginary husband, Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow as his wife (she dies early on, so it’s ok), and supporting roles by Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Marion Cottilard, and Laurence Fishburne.

This trailer was so good that I watched it several times and paused to see who was possibly dying and what the plot might be. (Here are some potential plot points that are in the trailer. Highlight the blank space after these words to reveal spoilers from the trailer I think Damon gets the virus, recovers and is immune, and then goes into hiding to save his kids. One of his daughters then gets the virus. She’s the one in the blue hat torward the end)

I love apocalyptic movies for some reason, and it’s nice to see a non-zombie film in this genre. Zombies creep me out, but there’s something so compelling about watching people try to survive when all hell breaks loose. Put Matt Damon, Jude Law and Kate Winslet in there and it’s perfection. The only question is: with so many big names, who is going to promote this movie? Please let it be Damon.

Contagion is out in the US on September 9th.

I guess I missed the great trailer, because the one I saw was not that good to be honest.

It was not suspenseful at all. And it felt so already done. Maybe it will get better, but right now this didn’t excite me at all despite cast.

  2. brin says:

It’s a “Talented Mr. Ripley” cast reunion!

  3. kim says:

I can’t wait to see the movie !

    PS katnip

If you watch the trailer that was on ET it was bad quality there is another trailer which better.

  4. the original bellaluna says:

Thank God Goop dies early on – otherwise, it would be unwatchable. (The only movie I liked with her in it was Proof, and that was mostly because of Anthony Hopkins.)

  5. badrockandroll says:

casting stretch: Goop does look like a cadaver!

  6. bow says:

Nothing new and i am not impressed either.
Winslet,Law,Fishburne and Cottilard are the only ones that could make this movie watchable.

I’m not sure I want to watch a movie about The Kardashians and their rise to fame.

  8. the original bellaluna says:

@ Eve – ahahahaha! 😀 Oh, come on, you know it’ll be on E! soon! (Which should just be called FWTV – FameWhore TV)

  9. katnip says:

    @kim

your comment was sweet.. I was not talking about the quality of the clip..but the content.

It just didn’t look good to me. And I found it a bit boring and already done.

I just expected a lot more from all that talented casting. Maybe my hopes were just too high.

I watched it a couple of times and just felt Meh

  10. Isa says:

At first I thought it was Josh Hartnett in that picture…

  11. Shay says:

If there was such a virus, I couldn’t care less if Miss Goop carked it. Seriously, are these producers for real?
This storyline is essentially another remake of previous viral outbreak film….like Outbreak (with Dustin Hoffman and Renee Russo, so many years ago and much better actors than Law, Damon and Paltrow)
Except with a lame cast. Really…Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow? You have to be kidding. I’m amazed that Damon and Paltrow have an acting career.
I suspect that this is just a filler movie. What they do to keep their bank managers happy.
If I was an a-list actor, like Kate Winslet, I’d have it etched in my contract not to be cast in films with Pathetic Paltrow and Dicky Damon. These two actors are the kiss of death in any film. No huge wonder why the Bourne franchise failed is there? The Bourne character was better played by Richard Chamberlain…and Richard is gay! As for Paltrow…what was her last outing? Glee?
    Please…

    @ Original Bellaluna:

I avoid E! original programming like the plague (except The Soup, of course). It’s horrible: shows about stupid people almost 24 hours a day!

P.S.: Hey, I wrote a message (addressed to you) on that Sherlock Holmes post but you didn’t say anything back *pouts*. Anyway, it was about me buying 3 movies with Sir Royal Corpsey Hotness Bettany because a video store here is being shut down (they’re selling everything). You have to watch Gangster No 1 (lots of crotch close-ups) and The Reckoning (also featuring Vincent Cassel and Tom Hardy, I’m not a fan but he’s one of everybody’s favourite hot guys here).

  13. CooCooCatchoo says:

This looks good! And @Eve: couldn’t agree with you more about E! They should change it to K! for Kardashian. The Soup, however, is must see TV. I fricking love that show.

  14. Zellie says:

    All I see is Outbreak.

  15. Eileen says:

Awesome! I with you-I love apocalyptic type movies! I love the 28 Weeks series, Day After Tomorrow, I am Legend, Deep Impact, The Road…everything that leads to the end of civilization.

  16. ElleGin says:

But then again, we have films that have great actors in it and then it totally flops.

  17. phlyfiremama says:

There are a lot of Steven King’s “The Stand” elements apparent in this movie. Captain Tripps rides again!

  18. Eve says:

    @ Eillen:

The Road was perfect. Viggo Mortensen was flawless…I really didn’t understand why neither the movie or Mortensen weren’t nominated. Or maybe I do — they’ve been rewarding mediocrity a lot for the past 10 years and leaving great movies and actors out of the competition.

  19. endoplasmic_ridiculum says:

Ah… There was Outbreak. There was Cabin Fever.. and Carriers..The Thaw.. The Anomedra Strain.. Blindness.. The Stand.. Quarantine…

Who the hell are the agents for these actors??? I wouldn’t sign on to do another stale epidemic flick unless it was about…KURU.. and even then, a documentary would be scary enough…

  20. blondie says:

@ Shay, the Bourne franchise did NOT fail! Most people will also tell you that Matt Damon IS Bourne. I think this will be an epic movie!

  21. mia girl says:

@shay Where do you live? Perhaps the Bourne movies did not do well there, but in the rest of the known world they were very very successful. Plus not sure what Damon did to make you hate him so much, but for my part I love him!

I will definitely see this movie at some point… I love apocalyptic films, but they freak my ass out – so it’s a love/hate thing.

I just watched The Road this past weekend for the first time… it took me that long to muster up the courage to see it, even with my imaginary husband Viggo as the lead. It was so amazing and sad and scary and heart wrenching. The movie has stayed with me all week.

  22. lrm says:

wow-i think damon is a decent actor in most things he’s been in….
    believable, at least.
and ditto for paltrow [though i did not see country strong, and i’m not into the bourne series…]
no, they are not the best talent ever, but they do okay, esp. compared to some of the ‘acting’ out there….
I also must confess to enjoying Jude Law in many of his roles…,as well….

However, I DETEST these panic/disaster themed films and have never watched one.

They infect the brain subconsciously,a nd I want no part of that….they are like viruses themselves-a negative software in the human computer brain to keep humanity in that state of attachment to drama/death and fear-we are easier to control that way!

Mainly, though, I just find them boring and over the top drama.

    so i will skip this.

  23. Amanda G says:

Wasn’t this movie already made? Called Outbreak? LOL Sorry, I love Damon, but this doesn’t interest me.

  24. mln76 says:

I guess I am in the minority this looks AMAZING!!!
And Goop isn’t as terrible of an actress as Country Strong made me think she’s always been mildly fine in this kind of role. Anyway the rest of the cast is so stellar that I CAN’T F-Ing wait…Jon Hawkes, Jennifer Ehle, and Kate Winslet in one movie??? Sounds perfect.

  25. bugsy says:

I have to agree with most people who are saying that this has soooo been done before. But the fact that this is such an amazing ensemble cast (I even saw a glimpse of John Hawkes in there. Awesome!) really makes me curious. Why would such talent sign on to something that’s had all the steam already run out of it? And then it occurred to me that perhaps this movie had such a great script that it didn’t matter? I remember thinking the same thing about “District 9”, that I was so tired of alien vs. human movies, what could they possibly do differently? And it ended up being incredible and winning awards that season. It was even nominated for Best Picture. Perhaps we’re looking at something like that here? It’s the only way I can figure that so many talented actors/actresses have signed on. I mean, Cottilard? Winslet? Fishbourne? And I’m LOVING the smaller roles I’ve seen with John Hawkes (winter’s bone). And while she’s sometimes annoying, no one can argue that Paltrow doesn’t act well.

  26. bugsy says:

    Is that also Jennifer Ehle????

  27. KateNonymous says:

Is Laura Innes in this? I thought there was one quick shot of her, and the voiceover at that moment sounded like her.

  28. michelle says:

    Oh look, it’s Outbreak 2.

  29. Lisa says:

Eh, these kinds of movies do nothing for me, even when they star the likes of Matt Damon (whom I adore). It’s nice to see Jennifer Ehle on the big screen, again though. She was good in The King’s Speech, as well.

  30. kazoo says:

it’s a mr talented ripley reunion! yay.
