Trent Reznor urges fans not to buy “repackaged” version of ‘Pretty Hate Machine’

wenn408668

Ever since I can remember, Trent Reznor has been very anti-corporate music, and he celebrated in grand style when Nine Inch Nails finally split from Interscope records in 2007. In the aftermath, Reznor became legendary for giving away his own music (and continued the trend last year by providing a free download of the EP from his new band, How to Destroy Angels). In 2009, sh-t got even more real when Interscope forbade him from recording and distributing a DVD of the last NIN tour, so Reznor countered by allowing all of his attendees to bring their own cameras and record their own live footage. Then, he gathered up several hard drives full of the raw footage and made it available as a free download, which resulted in a fan-made DVD that has made the internet rounds several times over and back again. Now, Interscope has dared to anger the Reznor once more by repackaging an old (i.e., the unremastered version) and holding it out to fans as if it was a new product. The Reznor — he is not happy:

Trent Reznor has urged fans not to buy the new Nine Inch Nails release.

The “Head Like a Hole” hitmaker – who scooped an Oscar earlier this year for his soundtrack for The Social Network – has blasted the “bulls**t” repackaging of his group’s 1989 album Pretty Hate Machine which has just been released in the US.

He tweeted: “NIN fans, don’t waste your money on this version of PHM that was just released. a record label bullshit move repackaging the old version. Ignore please.”

Trent – who last year released his own repackaged version of the album, remastering the record and adding a cover of Queen’s Get Down, Make Love – has previously clashed with his record company.

During a tour of Australia in 2007, he noticed the group’s album Year Zero was priced unusually high and persuaded Interscope records to lower the cost of the records.

Last year, Trent announced Nine Inch Nails – of which he is the sole permanent member – would be going on indefinite hiatus but revealed in March he is planning to resurrect the band, as well as recording with his current group How To Destroy Angels.

He said: “The three columns of things I’m currently funnelling music into – HTDA, NIN and film work – I believe will start to make more sense to you (and me) as everything unfolds. By having a few different outlets for my work I’m finding more inspiration within each one. No, Nine Inch Nails is not dead and I plan to focus on that next.”

So not only has Trent stood up once again to protect NIN fans from Interscope’s sketchy practices, but now he’s also danging a very shiny carrot in front of us by alluding to possible future music from NIN as well. Although I’m not sure how he’ll make the time, for he’s been an exceedingly busy man of late; his most recent work can be witnessed within the new trailers for the Americanized version of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. In addition, life has drastically changed for the Reznor over the past few years. Now, he’s a husband and father as well as an Oscar winner (along with co-conspirator Atticus Ross) too for his scoring on last year’s The Social Network, which brings me to my final though … exactly how absurd does the Reznor look while standing next to Nicole Kidman?

Aw. My little munchkin. I’ve loved this man since I was 14 years old. I f’n hate HTDA. It sounds like a NIN garage tribute band…

Edit @ Sassy – Actually he’s produced some really good music lately. I loved Year Zero and the Slip was a short album but it was really good and is still available for free…then there’s that whole oscar bit. But whatever.

Whatever. The best thing he’s done recently was his Twitter meltdown of 2009. Good times!

    @ sassy!

i missed that. can you enlighten me what it was about?

  8. Swan Hakka says:

Nice to see a musician speak out against the “re-packaging/re-mastering” nonsense the labels use to wring more money out of old product.

  9. Penguen says:

I liked NIN in high school (class of ’98) but not enough to be Trent-crazy. In 2000 a then-boyfriend took me to a NIN show, and my esteem for Trent skyrocketed.

A lot of bands are good, even awesome live, but I have never seen a lead singer totally OWN the stage like Trent did. Even the way he moved screamed, “rockstar.” I’ve been to a lot of shows and have never seen anyone pull it off like Reznor.

Hearing this kind of stuff just makes me like him even more than I already did. Good for him for promoting the music over money. It’s not like most bands make a lot from record sales, anyway.

There’s an interesting article called “RIAA Accounting: How To Sell 1 Million Albums And Still Owe $500000.” I didn’t want to post the link without permission, as it’s not specifically about this post, but you can Google it.

  10. Miss Diagnosed says:

Oh, Trent! This is the man I most want to tie to my headboard and do naughty things to his dirty parts.

Love his music and I love his views on the music industry.

  11. Jennifer says:

Got to love a man who stands by his principles…Hot, hot, hot…

  12. PrettyLights says:

@Penquen – I was going to post pretty much the same thing. I’ve seen NIN twice, once in 2005 and then at the end of the last tour in 2009. I’ve been to hundreds of shows covering the musical gamut and he is by far the MOST charismatic person on stage that I’ve ever seen in my life. You just cannot take your eyes off of him. He’s also just a musical genius, and I’m so happy he’ll be bringing NIN back and look forward to seeing him again.

Good for him protecting his fans from throwing money at the record labels for the same music in fancy packaging. Along the same lines I loved that the tickets for his last shows were paperless and offered through is website, so you had to have your credit card with you and prove you bought them to get in. Cut down so much on stupid annoying scalpers, and it let the real fans get tickets without paying $200 for them.

  13. Jules says:

Don’t you mean how absurd does Nicole Kidman look next to Trent? The man is scorching hot.

  14. kieslwoski says:

I just wanted to thank you guys for posting this story, that is why I love coming here you not only have the silly/mindless stuff with your great commentary but you put up stories about Trent Reznor (who I love). You guys ROCK!

  15. sapphire says:

I always wanted to find out if indeed, Trent would **** you like an animal.

  16. lucy2 says:

That’s great that he’s advising people not to waste their money on repackaged old product.
He seems to genuinely care about music and the fans, not just making a quick buck. Proves you can be successful without charging a fortune.

  17. teehee says:

@ Turtle Dove, ahh like when he bangs teh keyboard? I always rewound and replayed that clip on my VHS of MTV stuff I made LOL ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

  18. Gossip Owl says:

I am with Miss Diagnosed on this one. I would do TERRIBLE THINGS to Trent if he were still single. Although being a fan of West Indian Girl, I love his wife too. Nine Inch Nails/anything Trent Reznor touches is #1 on my top 5 favorite bands though. I’ve always liked smart intelligent men who overcome challenges so that makes Trent the perfect man.

Now let me explain to you all why Trent Reznor gets a 1000 out of 10 on my sexy scale. The fact that he’s imperfect and in the ways he is imperfect make him more sexy, especially when you know he’s made a conscious choice to overcome many of his imperfections and demons. He’s chosen to overcome his addiction and mental health issues, he’s smart and knows how to market himself, he listens to his fans, and he’s honest about it all. He isn’t like most of the celebrities around who try and bullshit people into believing he is someone he’s not. I am one of those fans who gets touchy when I hear someone say he has “sold out” because I think he deserves all the success he’s gotten and is the one person who is rewarded for overcoming adversity and coming into a happier place in life.

  19. Cherry Rose says:

The Downward Spiral is one of the best albums out there, period. For that reason, and the fact he gives so much back to his fans, I love him forever.

It’s kind of funny to see how he and Marilyn Manson differ, seeing as Manson got his start into mainstream music thanks to Trent.

Trent is aging gracefully and continues to put out great music without having to draw attention to himself.

Manson, who used to be cool until the whole thing with Evan Rachel Wood started, has fallen very low. He won’t age gracefully, acting like a highschool emo and dating girls young enough to be his daughter. Not only that, his music is atrocious to listen to now (ever since Eat Me, Drink Me), and everything he does is just too try hard.

I wish most aging rockstars would follow Trent’s lead. But of course, the majority are too involved in making money, and not making good music.

Can I get a HGF Amen?

  21. Terran says:

“i missed that. can you enlighten me what it was about?”

I’m not the OP, but his Twitter debacle was all kinds of hilarious. Basically, he gushed on Twitter about his then fiancee, she got on Twitter and over-shared about their sex life and started picking on people in a really petty way. There was backlash from the fans. He would find personal real-life info on the naysayers and post it to the web.

Then he wrote this long rant on his website, calling out some of his female fans for being fat (or chubby?), and telling them to “cut along the vein, not across.” Nice.

This stuff is still on the web. There’s more, but that’s all I can remember.

  22. dee says:

@ Cherry Rose – i know right? Downward Sprial is the best album ever made imo. I still listen to NIN almost daily.

  23. ZenB!tch says:

I <3 Trent. I almost worship Trent. His choice for a wife was disappointing. If it couldn’t be me, I was hoping for someone intelligent, talented and 30.

I went to several shows on his last tour with Jane’s Addiction and the smaller ones at the end. Being 3 rows from Trent was one of the best moments of my life. I even passed out. OK that was from too many margaritas and the heat of the pit but OH! it was worth it.

  24. marianne says:

    @ terran

oh no they didn’t! *lol* when you say then fiancee, do you mean his wife or was he engaged to someone else? oh i have to check that out when I come home from work

  25. Dingles says:

I will do whatever this man tells me to do.

@ Cherry Rose, amen on The Downward Spiral. That album was like my oxygen in high school.

  26. dim says:

    @Turtle Dove

Damn, he’s is indeed hot in that ’94 Reptile performance. Wow. His movements are entrancing.

  27. M says:

Trent is hilarious, I’ve seen him with NIN on tour 4 times. I remember at one show he stopped the concert and said, ‘I went into a music store today and saw my CD on sale for $25.00 – who the f*** would pay that much for a CD?!’

    LOL
He basically fully supported us downloading his music.

  28. the original bellaluna says:

@ Penguen & PrettyLights – Have you ever seen Dave Matthews in concert? He’s another who completely OWNS the stage, all while show-casing his awesome band members. Magical, I tell you. Magical.

  29. Penguen says:

@ The Original Bellaluna: I actually did see Dave Matthews in concert – I’m guessing it was 12 years ago or so. Unfortunately I was in the nosebleed section, and behind very tall people, so really didn’t get to see much. ๐Ÿ™

  30. gryke1 says:

As much as I hate to say it, I think we’re all going to age visibly before we see anything from NIN ever again. Further, this other band is of pratically no interest to anyone outside of the participants. Trent has alienated a lot of people with his childishness and immature twitter spasms. And, realistically, he is pushing 50 and doing filmscores is a good thing for him. Don’t get me wrong, I think Trent still has the “chops” for NIN, but I get the feeling that he is just plain not interested in it. Just my opinion and I hope I’m wrong.
