‘Breaking Dawn’ Comic-Con: Sparkles’ haircut & Kristen Stewart curses onstage

The red rope was bursting to capacity at San Diego’s Comic-Con yesterday when the Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1 panel hit the stage. Front and center was not Robert Pattinson himself but his strange new haircut, which was for his role in that David Cronenberg movie, Cosmopolis, that he’s currently shooting. So Sparkles is doing it for the art, but it still looks like he pulled out the scissors himself, since his movie character apparently goes nuts mid-buzzcut and flees a barber shop. Weird but not surprising for Cronenberg. Anyway, let’s appreciate this from all angles:

Meanwhile, Deadline has a correspondent at Comic-Con who is clearly not a fan of the franchise and describes Sparkles as looking like Gizmo from Gremlins and Taylor Lautner’s neck to Stretch Armstrong. That last one makes sense since Lautner has been rumored for the role for quite some time now, but this writer obviously does not want to be there. Anyway, the panel answered some questions and showed a few clips, one of which was not taken from the book. SPOILER ALERT and SHIRTLESS PATTINSON ALERT:

Now we get to see a clip – a scene Condon says isn’t in the book.

Jacob is getting a medical blood packet from Carlisle Cullen. It won’t be enough, so Carlisle has to get more. Jacob warns him that Sam will kill them. Carlisle and Esme say it’s worth the risk, Bella is family now. Jacob says he can see that; “This really is a family, as strong as the one I was born into.”

Cut to Jacob, with Leah and Seth, in the woods. He’s confronted by Paul and other hostile werewolves. Paul: “This isn’t your territory any more!” Jacob demands that Sam take back Leah and Seth into the clan. Adds: “Tell Sam that when the moment comes, I’ll be the one to destroy it. I’m the only one who can. They trust me.”

End of clip.

Lautner says Jacob in this movie gets his heart crushed and has to mature/take a stand.

New clip: the honeymoon.

Edward carries Bella over the threshold through a rotating glass door. She actually looks slightly tan, and is barefoot. Edward: “I’m nothing if not traditional.”

She sees the four-poster bed, and is clearly excited. He brings in the luggage, kinda embarrassed-looking.

Edward: “You tired?”
She shakes head.
“You wanna go for a swim?”
She nods. “I could use a few human minutes.”
“Don’t take too long, Mrs. Cullen.”

He goes outside to the water and takes his shirt off [Con crowd goes wild]

She goes into the bathroom, and a pop song comes on as she brushes her teeth, hair, shaves legs, picks out underwear, looks all tense. Then she says, to herself, “Don’t be a coward.” She runs outside in just a towel, drops it (seen from behind; sorry, boys!) and goes in the water, where Edward’s bare back awaits. End clip.

What was the cast’s reaction to the birth scene when they read it? Stewart: “I thought it was so cool; we really tried to go as hardcore as we could.” Bella has “always been able to fight harder than other humans because of a little bit of that [indicates Rob] in her – literally!” She realizes double entendre, laughs.

What’s it like for Rob and Taylor to work with beautiful women?

Rob: “I always get asked this, every year.”
Taylor: “And what do you say?”
Rob: “Any answer could be inappropriate.”
Taylor: “There could be worse jobs. It is weird.”
Kristen: “It’s so weird that we’re so hot.”

All cast members say how much they’ll miss it. Taylor says the third book was one he loved but this movie is his fave. Kristen’s favorite book was New Moon, but movie-wise she still loves the first one. “I am so godd-mn nostalgic!” Immediately covers her mouth in horror realizing there are kids in the room.

[From Deadline

Poor Kristen just couldn’t help herself there, I think. She’s like a surly sailor in a miniskirt, but I’m the same way and really have to watch my mouth in public, not to mention around my own kid. For what it’s worth, Movieline live-Tweeted Kristen’s dirty talk in a slightly flattering light: “Kristen Stewart accidentally swears, catches herself, apologizes adorably for ‘the tiny ones in the audience.’ #sdcc” Meanwhile, Twitter has presented a not-so-adorable picture of Kristen refusing to indulge fans with autographs outside their San Diego hotel:

[W]hile Rob was more than happy to sign autographs for fans, Kristen surprised everyone by allegedly gave them the cold shoulder.

“Robsten spotted in San Diego!” fan Levi Dailey tweeted. “Fan asked Rob and Kristen for photo with. He said yes, Kristen said No! … I have no idea what they were doing, all I know they came into the hotel. … Rob also signed autographs before going into the hotel. They did come out a stretch limo though.”

“I guess she doesn’t like to be bothered with Rob,” Levi speculates. “Rob doesn’t care as long as he’s not mobbed.”

[From Hollywood Life]

Kristen also reportedly was very crowd-shy when she paid a visit to Rob on the the Cosmopolis set, preferring to stay in her vehicle while Sparkles signed autographs for his fans. Yes, she’s got an attitude, but Kristen doesn’t usually pretend to be anyone but herself unless the studio makes her do so. In fact, she probably received a stern talking-to after her potty mouth on the Comic-Con stage, but at least I can understand why she might not want to interact with the Comic-Con crowd itself, which (according to some) is the very definition of “unwashed masses.” I think it was Eli Roth who once said that after the yearly event, he gleefully indulged in a Silkwood shower.

Still, Kristen can get away with not loving her public as long as this Twilight madness carries her less than ideal behavior. Afterwards, she’ll really have to prove herself as an actress, and part of that process is endearing herself to the public. It’ll be semi-interesting to watch all of that shake out in the future.

I’ve never been to the San Diego Comic Con, but I worked NYC’s Comic Con last year. Yes, there are a handful of shut ins who seem like they’ve never showered in their lives who attend the event. But, the vast majority of people who attend Cons are just normal people who happen to enjoy comics, fantasy stuff or Sci-fi. It’s a total myth that Comic Con is only attended by unwashed masses.

Sorry for the little bit of nerd rage there. But, it bothers me when people lump comic book fans into one big hygienically challenged group.

  2. Praise St. Angie! says:

meh…he’s still totally adorable, bad haircut and all.

  3. corey says:

I just saw a video right now on a site where kristen stayed to sign autographs while sparkles walked away. maybe they like tag team and let the other sign while the other tries to runaway from the crazies.

  4. Mia says:

Right there with you on the nerdrage because I am a 5 yr and counting DragonCon goer. Yes, there are people there who go from Day 1 to close without much sleep or bathing, but the vast majority do.

I got a huge giggle out of the descriptions of the cast from the Deadline correspondent. I usually call them Emo, Sullen, and Wolfie Boy, but Gremlin & Stretch work too.

  5. anne says:

Kristen Stewart is a boring blah person. Can’t even dress up like the other actresses for the ocassion. I don’t respect her in the least.

  6. corey says:

and wow-the girl who plays Leah is the best looking girl in the cast. Her legs look about 6 feet long. lol

  7. Peruvian says:

This girl should be considering a major career change… Fame is not her thing at all.

  8. French reader says:

Well at least Stewart is the only girl of the cast dressed properly. Girls, it’s Comi-Con, not a movie premiere!

  9. Jen D says:

I like Stewart – I can’t help it. I know she’s sullen and doesn’t smile, but that’s just because she has no idea how to play the game. She’s so awkward it kind of makes me laugh. I particularly love that she seems not to try, and yet gets a ton of movie roles and hot boyfriends, when Ashley Green tries so hard and gets nothing. Ugh, Ashley Green.

By the way, who are the two end people in the shot? After Julia Jones?

  10. hairball says:

Over twilight – until I inexplicably get excited to see it in November only to power wash the cheese off me afterwards saying why god, why??

But do still find him attractive. I try to picture him in 10 years and can’t decide if he’ll look better or worse. He does have very good facial structure when captured at the right angle.

I don’t hate Kristen S either way but I just find her gross. She is atrocious in her acting.

  11. tania says:

why are these girls so overdressed for comicon? Good grief, even megan fox wears jeans and blazer with flats. lol Kristen’s see-through top is silly too, I don’t really get it.

Kristen and Rob both turned away autograph seekers yesterday, but then at other times were game. I think people need to realize they can’t sign for them at times, it’s not a big deal.

  12. zephyr says:

Won’t waste my time reading about ppl who can’t act but the D-Listed vid of Lynea Lattanzio and her 700 cats was awe-inspiring.

  13. carla says:

I watched some clips from yesterday and Kristen seems to be improving with her itnerviewing skills. She’s more articulate this time around. Rob’s still his goofy but charming self. Julia Jones is gorgeous too, without trying so hard like Ashley and Nikki.

  14. lolab says:

rob looks cute with his hair. kristen seems more comfortable finally onstage.

  15. Pyewacket says:

I cannot stand to look at Taylor Lautner’s face. It is creepy and weird.

  16. Pyewacket says:

I cannot stand to look at Taylor Lautner’s face. It is creepy and weird.

  17. Mae East says:

I think the movie for which he did that haircut has wrapped.

So, that is all him at this point. Not sure what to think about that.

  18. gabs says:

Oh please! I saw plenty of pics on other sites of her smiling and looking like a team player. As usual you choose the worst pics of her to suit your story of how she is in your mind! I like that she recognizes it isnt a movie premiere like the other tryhard twats in dresses and heels. Its just comic con ladies! Jeans will do. sheesh. I do wonder about the shirt though. Did she know it was see through or was it one of those things where you don’t notice till you leave the house? Is it a new fad?

Robs hair- I thought that movie finished filming though and the haircut is his decision to keep. So..ew.

  19. Sue says:

I don’t get the appeal of ether of them and I don’t think the other girls are over dress there wearing cute summer dresses flats would have dress down the look but they’re not over the top.

  20. Sara says:

I think it’s because of his new movie. It’s about a bilionaire who wants a haircut but in the way he start to get in trouble. Something like that.
I looked at wikipedia. Cosmopolis is the story of Eric Packer, a 28 year old multi-billionaire asset manager who makes an odyssey across midtown Manhattan in order to get a haircut. The stretch limo which adorns the cover of the book is richly described as highly technical and very luxurious, filled with television screens and computer monitors, bulletproofed and floored with Carrara marble. It is also cork lined to eliminate (though unsuccessfully, as Packer notes) the intrusion of street noise.

  21. Pavolini says:

Yeah, she does play the Hollywood game. It’s all a game. From the PR stunts to her “emo” behavior back when she had The Runaways and then Welcome to the Rileys coming out. And sick to death of people saying she’s “awkward and shy.” I know awkward and shy and her attitude is not it. That’s just being a little brat and thinking you’re better than others. Now she has Snow White coming out and she’s trying to look more feminine and clean up her attitude. But she doesn’t play the game. Yeah, right.

  22. mia girl says:

As far as the haircut goes, I think it’s kinda cute/endearing that he still has it. As always, his interviews were charming and funny. When asked what scene was the most difficult to do his response was “the one where I had to take my shirt off” . I love me some Sparkles.

@carla I agree. I saw a couple of interviews and Stewart is definitely more polished than her former self. She seemed more comfortable.

And some of those girls in the picture above are definitely overdressed for the occasion. Ashley Green looks like she’s going to a cocktail party. She’s a pretty girl and would have looked great in a pair of jeans and a cute top. With this dress she looks like she’s trying way to hard.

  23. Laura says:

She was probably just super stoned and was scared to talk to so many people and sign autographs.

  24. Embee says:

I cannot stand that stupid “cross your legs to make you look skinnier” pose most of those girls are doing. And what a camera angle. Not interested in peeking up their skirts.

  25. kimberly says:

People aren’t as interested in twilight once they started reading other books from the genre. After they read other series they realized how retarded twilight was. . . . it’s about time!

Agree with above how the girls, except KS, look so over dressed for the gig. Ashley Greene is the worst actress, they really casted badly for that character . . .

  26. lolab says:

kimberly-I think most people realize how bad twilight is. twilight is what is called a “guilty pleasure”–a lot of people are reading it, they are seeing the movies, they just don’t want to admit to doing so. lol

  27. sina says:

I don’t really think she’s playing the hollywood game so much as maturing and realizing she needs to handle herself more professionally if she’s gonna try to headline movies on her own. If she was playing the hollywood game, she would be playing it smarter from the start.

  28. My Darling Pinkett says:

Yeah, Cosmopolis finished shooting, but I think he’s keeping that awful haircut for possible reshoots. I don’t think he’d WANR to keep it otherwise. Lol. I guess they decided not to use a wig for the part.

@Pavolini Totally agree with you. People seem to think she is “real” and therefore would never play the Hollywood games. They seriously don’t know how Hollywood works and how actors work. Right now Kristen is all for keeping her career afloat after Twilight ends, and these past few years have been about upping her level of fame. If it wasn’t for her “relationship” with Rob and her sometimes surly behavior, no one would pay much attention to her. She is different from most other actresses, which is nice, but she is a game-player and, IMO, not a very good actress. It’ll be interesting to see what happens after BD ends next year. Will her fans stick with her?

Btw, has anybody mentioned her see-through top? Am I the only one who doesn’t like it? I’m actually surprised she’d go for that kind of look. Her casual attire is usually more modest, but she’s purposely showing her bra. I just find it tacky on anyone. She certainly doesn’t look horrible, but a nice solid shirt would have been better.

  29. Lindsay says:

Umm, Kristen and Rob did go out and sign autographs after. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhHZ_CEjEEI&feature=player_embedded

  30. dr.bombay says:

I’m getting a real “Flock of Seagulls” vibe from his hair!

  31. sina says:

There’s playing the “hollywood game” and then there’s smarting up and maturing and realizing you need to present yourself better cause part of your career depends on public image. They aren’t one and the same.

Kristen is not anti-hollywood at all-she’s in a franchise! But she’s not a hollywood game player either. Blake Lively, for instance, plays the hollywood game, and smartly. THAT’s how the hollywood game is played. You appear sexy and accessible at the same time, and connect yourself well. Kristen has not presented herself as sexy or accessible in the past.

  32. Catherine says:

Good to see she got dressed up for a public occasion like the other ladies.

  33. Liamarie says:

she’s dressed totally appropriately for comic-con.

  34. lauren says:

The public occasion is Comicon. Uma Thurman, who I think sets the standard for great fashion sense, wore jeans and a top and flats to her panel. I’m siding with Uma here, and saying Kristen’s more appropriately attired for a comicon than the lovely but dressed and heeled up costars.

  35. Flan says:

I’d rather have seen the Game of Thrones cast, which was there as well.

  36. Peter12 says:

kristen does play the hollywood game in that she steers her career. she picks roles that she feels invested in, not superficial roles that will market her in a certain way. she’s the lead in a major franchise. be thankful she isn’t like these other twats whose main priority is creating a artificial/manipulated/calculated public persona and vanity projects that only feed into their pockets and over inflated egos. otherwise, there would be a kristen stewart clothing line, perfume, and solo singing career.

and ppl seem to forget she’s been actively working for about a decade before she was cast in twilight. don’t worry, she’ll still have her fans once the series is finished.

  37. Amanda G says:

How cute…Taylor is trying to grow facial hair. It’s still not going to help you. You will forever be known as the Twilight guy.

  38. CJ says:

Love him and don’t mind her – I like the way she is dressed.

  39. dovesgate says:

I have to admit the girl has grown on me.
She’s playing her own version of the Hollywood game – the one that is geared to endear herself to those of us who are sick of the carbon copy bubbleheads in skimpy clothes flashing thier assets, like an above poster said, projecting themselves to “appear sexy and accessible at the same time, and connect yourself well”.

Of course, my idea of one connecting themselves well in Hollyweird is “who you screw for parts, who you screw for drugs, who you screw in hopes they will remember you in case they hit it big (or bigger) before you.”

  40. snapnhiss says:

She just can’t win, can she? She’s dressed appropriately yet many of you are tearing her apart for being too casual. Emma Watson shows up in a cocktail dress with a ton of make-up on for a daytime photo with her HP castmates that are all dressed casually, and everyone exclaims what a bunch of slobs everyone but Watson is…

    Why the Stewart hate?

  41. kikay says:

As far as i’m concerned only Kristen among the Twilight girls who knows how to dress to the occasion, and what she wore is just right for it,plain and simple. She’s not the kind of girl who have the need to outshine others to make herself feel the best or important. She is what she is ,Kristen Stewart, take it or leave it.

  42. mannequin says:

I don’t really think that ALL actors and actresses must endear themselves to the public. I think an actor can be aloof, private or even snobby but as long as they’re good at their craft, that’s all their job really is. They don’t need to be our friend.

  43. antipodean says:

The girl child is definitely playing a game, but I don’t think it is a very nice one. She is manipulative, she likes to think that she is better than everyone of that age group, and no-one has the balls to tell her otherwise. She needs to keep the twihards happy and interested as this final part is bieng dragged out. They are forgetting that the audience is growing older and are probably already fixated on something else, they should only wait a few months before releasing the final part to the saga, but that would not please the girl child as as soon as the twilight saga is over in the cinemas and released on dvd she will be forgotten and she knows it.

  44. dani says:

Totaly agree with Manequin…They are not and will never be our friends, so for starters we shouldnt talk of them as we know them…who really knows if Kstew is or isnt playing a game, just the people around her! Stop kidding yourselves!

  45. antipodean says:

Being good at their craft is the operative word, having one facial expression is not good, i don’t profess to know them, and to be honest I wouldn’t want to know any movie star. I don’t mean that in a nasty way it’s just that when you see a movie you love with an actor you could dream about, to know them would spoil the fanatasy as they become real people, and you may not like what you see.

  46. MANJULA MANI says:

who took my babies keep the list and the babies should meet me.

  47. Saucin' says:

“Damn” is a swear word? For real? Honestly…

  48. bugsy says:

so very very tired of this franchise. I wish it was over. Did pattinson shave one half of his head? looks bizarre. But I can’t help but like him, tho. He’s absolutely adorable when he gives interviews. Of course, it could all be an act. But he doesn’t exactly win awards for acting, is all I’m saying. Hopefully he improves, because he’s pretty easy on the eyes, though young.

  49. Good job once again! Thanks a lot=)

  50. Trudy says:

I guess I’ve grown up because I saw the BD1 trailer and it was awful. I now know I won’t be seeing BD1 or BD2. I for one am tired of Kristen thinking she can get by with anything. It’s evident that she’s stoned. By the way Robert starting filming Cosmopolis right after BD1 and 2 were donne. There seems to be this debate on whether he did the actual sex scene because the body was incredibly buff. Look at the pictures above and see how fat his butt and legs are, I’m sorry but your upper body can’t be that buff and your lower body looks like a slob. Also why did Robert and Kristen have to look so trashy?
