Kristen Stewart’s Snow White is a lip-biting, sword-wielding warrior princess

sw21

Here are the first promotional images from Snow White and the Huntsman, the “reimagined” retelling of the Snow White story with the lip-biting mouth-breather Kristen Stewart in the Snow White role. Kristen and her costars were at Comic-Con to do some early promotion for the film – very, very early, as it turns out, because they haven’t even filmed one day of this junk. Here’s a fun fact: did you know that Michael Fassbender was originally in talks to play The Huntsman? True story. Now the part is filled by Chris Hemsworth, beefcake, meathead and now known for Thor. Anyway, I didn’t realize that they were going to make “Snow White” into some kind of Joan d’Arc/Boudicca type warrior-woman. Now Kristen’s casting is making slightly more sense, although I still have my doubts that she’ll be any more or less capable of portraying “warrior princess” than “pretty princess”. Also: Charlize looks fierce as hell as the Evil Queen.

If fans at the Comic Con convention were looking for a little action and verbal sparring, that’s exactly what they got when Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron took stage to promote their movie Snow White and the Huntsman.

Kristen, 21, and Charlize, 35, engaged in some playful fighting talk yesterday as they unveiled the first character images from their upcoming fairytale film. The South African actress admitted she didn’t really know Stewart, but said she had a feeling the Twilight star was going to ‘give me a run for my money.’ Theron added: ‘And I’m ready for it b**ch, let’s go!’

Producers debuted the first photos of Stewart, as an armoured, sword-wielding Snow White, and Theron, as the Evil Queen, at the Comic-Con fan convention in San Diego, California. The film’s co-stars Chris Hemsworth and Sam Claflin also attended the panel discussion.

Stewart told the massive crowd of assembled fans that doing a traditional Snow White was not something ‘I was jumping at.’ What attracted her was that this Snow White is more edgy: ‘I get to have a sword and stuff,’ Stewart said.

A newly released publicity photo shows Stewart wearing armour and holding a huge sword and shield in the movie.

Charlize plays the evil queen and Chris Hemsworth co-stars as the huntsman. Cameras will begin rolling on the highly anticipated fantasy film next week in London. The movie is due out next June and is one of two Snow White movies set to hit theatres.

The other Snow White film will star Lily Collins and Julia Roberts as the evil queen. The Julia Roberts version does not yet have a title, but the team behind the movie recently moved up its release date.

[From The Mail]

So K-Stew will be playing a lip-biting, mouth-breathing, monotone warrior princess, Charlize is playing the haughty Evil Queen, Hemsworth is the super-butch Huntsman and Sam Claifin is the prince… Sam is the one I know the least about, but in the promotional image, doesn’t he look like a young Billy Bob Thornton?!?

Isn’t it strange that they haven’t started filming yet but the publicity shots are already out? Also, that group pic is hilarious. Never knew K-Stew is actually a dwarf. Speaking of which: will there be any dwarfs accompanying Snow White in this movie? And who’s gonna play THEM?

  2. embertine says:

Weirdly, I think this might turn out to be good casting. But this is from someone who has never seen Her Surliness in anything, so I’m just going on the promo pic.

  3. annaloo. says:

Charlize’s looks like what that corny Annie Liebowitz ad campaign for Disney SHOULD have looked like. But Kirsten looks cheesy.

  4. madpoe says:

    Pass. *Sorry Chris*

  5. Lala says:

I guess it’s a sign of our times – you have only one face expression – be an actress (I’m talking about you Kristen), you can not sing – be a singer (all of them from top 10). Poor me, poor world. There is no hope for us.

  6. mia girl says:

For my tastes, this Snow White holds a lot more appeal than the other. I actually like the promotional shots and I read somewhere that they have been in training/pre-production for a while and start actual shooting in a couple of weeks. I also read Colleen Atwood is the costume designer so I am sure the look will be great. The Evil Queen’s dress is looks amazing.

I think the casting of Charlize is inspired and Im willing to give Stewart a chance. I still would have much preferred Viggo as the Huntsman, but oh well. 🙁

  7. Quest says:

Sam (British)had a role in Pirates of the Caribbean- On Stranger Tides as well. Not seeing KStew wheel a sword, maybe if she rolled her eyeballs of doom but not a sword.

Don’t seem too fascinating, but Charlize would make a wicked queen

  8. Micki says:

She gets to have a sword and…stuff!

Charmingly versatile with words our KStew.
Thanks God there’s a script and no improvisations

  9. tapioca says:

The Knights of Gondor called – they want their shield back.

Also, on what upside-down fantasy world would Charlize frickin’ Theron‘s queen ever be “less fair” than Kristen Stewart? That mirror’s going to have to be played by the resurrected corpse of Laurence Olivier to say the line without ROFLing!

  10. Lisa says:

@cherry- Yes, she’s like 5’4″. I’m personally looking forward to watching this movie. I’m one of the few people who like Kristen Stewart and think she has the potential to become an A list actress. She won me over in “Speak”.

  11. ElleGin says:

    Ergh…. twilight alert

  12. Boo says:

Kristen’s legs look so teeny tiny and boyish sticking out under that shield. I know Snow White is supposed to have the Innocent Sexuality thing going on, and I guess I’m not sure how it will work if the sexuality is, in fact, androgyny served up on a wooden platter of an actress.

Charlize is giving her the stink eye in that one picture. Don’t mess with the Evil Queen, Bella.

  13. Abby says:

Kstew is so short. And I’ve changed my mind. I’ll have to watch. When was the last time they did any remake of Snow White? Maybe it’ll be interesting. Maybe Kristen only sucks in Twilight.

  14. Girafe99 says:

@tapioca: I thought the shield screamed Lord of the Rings too

plus is it me being pervy or is Charlize’s blade phallic looking

  15. Hakura says:

Really too early for me to make a judgment on the ‘warrior princess’ direction. Not that I like the whole “Woe is me! I just *know* one day, My prince will come & validate my lowly life as a woman!”-thing (in fact, I hate it), but it seems like the ‘princess who’ll kick your ass’ thing has just been done to death lately. Alice in Wonderland took that route too.

Everyone knew Charlize would kick ass, but she’s just gorgeous as hell in this promo-pic. I *love* the outfit! And the fact that they didn’t force her into the cookie-cutter ‘villains always have dark hair’ mold. Wow! That guy really does look like a ‘young Billy Bob Thornton’. (& a much more handsome version, if you ask me. At least in this picture.)

  16. constance says:

It looks- budget. All. the. way. around.

Charlize held my attention but the disco ball overcoat, lost me again.

Is it me or is Charlize working a lot of random acts recently? Seems like we haven’t seen much of her and then bam! I’ve heard maybe 3 projects with PR in the last several weeks.

  17. Addie says:

In what universe is Kristen supposed to be “fairer than Chalize??”

This movie already seems real anoying without being made yet.

…Oh and Snow White with a shield and in skinny jeans??

  18. nona says:

meh, outside of Twilight, kristen doesn’t bother me. I thought her Joan Jett was really well done actually, and she was great in adventureland. So if she pulls this off, then I’ll respect her as an actress and forgive her for Bella Swan.

I don’t really see how once inch of leg can be described as “boyish” too. She looks very young, but I think that’s the point.

  19. Hakura says:

@Lala“Poor me, poor world. There is no hope for us.”

Yeah, the world is going to hell in a handbasket, for sure. But that doesn’t mean some of us can’t go first class. ^_~ (Still a bit stuffy, but we have softer pillows & more mixed nuts per person.)

@Addie“In what universe is Kristen supposed to be “fairer than Chalize??” This movie already seems real anoying without being made yet.”

Maybe they canned the ‘fairer than’ thing & substituted the ‘warrior’ thing. Or they’ll try to spin some ‘internal beauty’ crap. Either that, or these casting directors are going to come to a very unpleasant realization when they actually start shooting.

  20. teri says:

“Fairer” in the tale at least meant not just external beauty, but internal beauty as well. Also SW is a tale about blossoming youth and sexuality and vitality, things the queen is envious of, so this isn’t about who’s prettier.

What would have made this much more interesting though is if they had included “Rose REd”, SW’s sister in the original Grimm tale.

  21. Anonymous says:

forgive me but this looks AWESOME.

  22. sure_fine_whatever says:

So Kristen “Please give me another movie role besides Twilight” Stewart is the hunched dwarf in this version?

Why are they stealing from LOTR?
    Running out of ideas.

  23. rania says:

I like Kristen’s shot. It looks like she has a the world on her shoulders, instead of a typical “girl power” stance that would be more typical to see.

Charlize looks great, I like the obsidian looking gown, it looks evil.

    Chris is hot as always!

  24. oh-bb says:

    different story, teri.

there’s snow white, one story, and then snow white and rose red, a different story. with bears. and sisters.

  25. TL says:

The one thing I like about Kristen Stewart that seperates her from other young celebs is she could really give two you know whats about always smiling and putting on a show for the cameras like a blithering over exposing attention seeking idiot. She does her thing and stays away when she is not. She does not seem like the type that likes to hear herself talk or jump from cause to cause for her public image. Maybe she comes off bitchy but at least she doesn’t look like a barbie doll playing dress up.

    Emma Watson take notes

  26. sansoi says:

I don’t really get the hate for kristen and yet people act like emma watson walks on water. Emma blew off the majority of her promotional gigs during the european and american legs-but always made it on time for the red carpet. Her acting is always the weakest link in the HP movies, she only has one emotion too-she always talks like she’s expasperated and about to cry. “Haaaari!”

Sure, she dresses better than Kristen and can be more charming, but she’s total diva material now.

  27. guilty pleasures says:

Mirror mirror on the wall, on what planet is Kirsten S more fair than Charlize T???
    Seriously!?

  28. Cindy says:

. . . When was the last time they did any remake of Snow White? . . .

There was a pretty good Snow White movie about 10 years ago with Sigourney Weaver as the Queen.

  29. Catherine says:

    Co-sign @ oh-bb
Teri – Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a completely different and nonrelated story from Snow White and Rose Red.

  30. delia says:

Looks great so far. I don’t think Kristen could handle a more traditional snow white role, but she was an ass kicker in “The Runaways” and will probably fit this role just fine. I’m all down for armor on a princess, way better than pinafores!

  31. raleigh says:

I like it. Kristen’s talented and I think she played the same role for so long cause she’s always been cast as “the teen girl” in things. There’s only two roles for a “teen girl” — surly and disaffected or overly perky. So, hopefully this movie gives her some material that can help her get out of the typical teen girl fare she’s been given due to her age and very youthful looks.

  32. Ari says:

I am totally seeing this for Charlize she looks grade-A AMAZING

  33. Heatheradair says:

Feel like this is a strategic move to piggyback on the anticipated success of The Hunger Games and that whole “warrior girl” genre it will probably spawn…..

  34. i.want.shoes says:

And here I was, thinking we’d see the last of KStew’s crap acting talent with the last Twilight movie. No such luck.

  35. TL says:

sansoi said: “I don’t really get the hate for kristen and yet people act like emma watson walks on water.”

I could not agree with you more. The media love emma because she kisses their butt and yes she is a complete diva. I don’t think kristen is the greatest actress but she’s better than emma.

  36. Jen says:

why is the guy at the end looking like he’s bending at the knees?

Maybe KStew’s acting has gotten better for this one. She seems to improve with each film.

  37. Jen D says:

    @ tapioca

You are so right! That shield is right out of LOTR.

  38. Shy says:

Sam Claflin looks like James Franco here 🙂

That picture of Kristen made my day yeaterday. I can’t wait to see trailer. it’s just like the Twilight. You want to see every movie just to laugh at how bad it is. I wan’t to see this on so badly.

  39. Camille says:

I think the photos of the cast in their costumes all look awesome 😀 .
KStew is a pretty girl. Charlize has that ice-queen thing going on perfectly. And Chris is beefy and hot. Love it.

This SW version looks much, much more interesting to me than the Julia one.

  40. LittleDeadGirl says:

@tapioca … chocked on my coffee laughing at your comment. So so true. I want to like this but I don’t get how snow white would be a worrior princess. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. I just dont’ get taking these classic stories and chaging them being recognition … just make a new story? Why call it snow white?

  41. bugsy says:

Ugh. I can’t help it. I’m going to see this movie simply because Charlize is in it.

  42. Peter12 says:

ita w/ sansoi. i think emma watsons biggest appeal is the mere fact that she is british. she should just become another one of those vacant fashion girls who are all the same. i don’t really see a future for her as an actress. but i wish rupert grint the best! he’s the only talented and tolerable of the three in hp. god, it’s just a sad testament to our society. ppl love what’s plastic and OBVIOUS.

i think this sw has a lot of potential. i’m excited/nervous to see kristen stewart in a mainstream project that is well done. she’s great in a lot of her movies, but the mass marity will not have seen them bc they’re small indie films. i hope this does really well.

  43. harfang says:

Kristen looks exTREMEly Joan of Arc. She looks good, but it is really a cliché of a shot. I’m someone who still watches my Xena DVDs though, so now I have to see this damn thing. I would probably see it for Charlize if not for Kristin… okay, maybe not. Incidentally I very recently saw Yellow Handkerchief and Speak, and I now get why at least Hollywood is completely bonkers over this girl.

  44. crazydaisy says:

    Can’t wait for this!!

I agree Viggo would have been perfect for the huntsman but he’s probably too old for Snow W. if there’s gonna be a hint of romance there.
