Ryan Gosling & George Clooney sexy it up in ‘The Ides of March’ trailer

Oooh, George Clooney released the trailer for The Ides of March! Yay! We talked about this film yesterday, when Clooney began giving interviews about the political and moral storyline. I thought this film was going to a different story – in my mind, Clooney’s presidential candidate has some kind of problem or scandal, and when Gosling’s character finds out about it, he becomes weepy and disillusioned. From the trailer, I don’t think that’s what happened, but I’m not sure. Thankfully, the trailer doesn’t give away the entire plot, and I’m sitting here mystified regarding what actually goes down. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a trailer where I didn’t feel like everything was given away.

See? All I know is that Gosling looks hot and my love for Phillip Seymour Hoffman is unending and unyielding. Damn, PSH looks good too, doesn’t he? Yes, he’s a big man. But he’s also sexy as hell with that strawberry blonde hair and that voice. Out of all of the dudes in this film, PSH is the one I’d really want to go to bed with. Here’s another thing too – out of the whole cast, PSH is the one I see getting an Oscar nomination. Yeah, Hollywood loves Clooney and Gosling, but they kiss the ground PSH walks on (for good reason).

As for the politics… eh. I like Clooney, and I like that he tries to make the kind of good old-fashioned political films like the ones he grew up in the 1970s, but that’s also the problem: they feel dated. This feels dated to me. We’ll see what goes down.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman! yes please 🙂
George Clooney! Dont mind if I do!

    and thank you

  2. mln76 says:

The only thing that may stop Phillip Seymour Hoffman getting an Oscar Nomination for this is Phillip Seymour Hoffman getting an Oscar nomination for Moneyball 🙂

  3. Turtle Dove says:

Agreed about it feeling dated (perhaps it’s the trailer and not the whole film?), but I think that it’s Gosling that gives it it’s modernity and it’ll be PSH that’ll give the film the legitimacy it needs; he’s usual the anchor to solidifying any film he’s in.

The problem with political films is that they exist in that particular moment within a limited/fixed context. If you’re going to see it, see it straight away because waiting will only make it slip further and further from it’s relevance. (Mean but true)

PS – Popsugar has some new RG pictures with blonded-up new hair. Still looks hot. (sigh)

  4. Kiki says:

Can someone please tell me what the meaning of “Ides” is?
    Thanks!

  5. Sophie says:

Kaiser, this is the synopsis for the film:
“During the frantic last days before a heavily contested Ohio presidential primary, an up-and-coming campaign press secretary finds himself involved in a political scandal that threatens to upend his candidate’s shot at the presidency.”

And this is the synopsis for the play the film is based on:
“Stephen is a wunderkind press secretary who has built a career that men twice his age would envy. During a tight presidential primary race, however, Stephen’s meteoric rise falls prey to the backroom politics of more seasoned operatives, and his one night stand with a teenage staffer proves to be more complicated than casual. Farragut North is a classic tale of hubris set against a contemporary landscape – about the lust for power and the costs one will endure to achieve it.”

Even with those and the trailer, I’m still not exactly sure what’s going on, but the movie looks excellent and I’ll go see it just for that cast!

  6. mln76 says:

@kiki it means the 15th day of the month in the Roman calendar-the Ides of March specifically refers to the day that Julius Cesear was murdered.

  7. Turtle Dove says:

If I had to guess it’s context in relation to the film it would have to be the allusion of Julius Caesar’s betrayal both politically and personally. Caesar says, “The Ides of March (March 15) are come(ing)” and a seer (sees future) says beware that date… of course Caesar is murdered by the senators and his best friend Brutus. Let’s not forget, however, Brutus dies at the end of the play and Caesar is eulogized by Mark Antony.

Another guess – Clooney = Caesar, Gosling = Brutus, PSH = Antony.I suppose I could read the play Ides of March and get a sense of what it’s about… it’s based on a play… right?

  8. Sophie says:

@Kiki, the term “ides” comes from the ancient Roman calender. It’s the 15th day of March, May, July, or October, and the 13th day of the other months. Basically, the middle of the month. The movie is set around one of the presidential primaries which are normally around March, if I’m correct.

  9. the_porscha says:

I agree about the potential datedness of a movie like this, BUT I also think there are few things more thrilling than a good political drama, even now.

  10. LOVE ANGELINA says:

It seems to be about something the adviser to the campaign, Ryan’s character, does to two different campaigns who both wanted to use his talent to help get someone elected. Looks very good…might be the first political thriller I see in theaters. I am excited and Ryan looks amazing in this.

  11. Nanea says:

It’s quite telling that a movie that is released in 2011 based on a play (Farragut North) that came out in 2008 that describes something that happened in 2004 feels dated.

This is actually one of the films that I’ve been looking forward to since I heard they were going to get made, regardless of PSH, the Gosdong and the Cloonester.

  12. Kiki says:

    Thank-you girls!

  13. shockedandappalled says:

Wow, it’s Ryan’s Gosling’s year, isn’t it? Blue Valentine, followed by Crazy Stupid Love, Drive and the Ides of March. Are you kidding me? This guy is all talent (and hotness).

  14. observer says:

The trailer has intrigued me, and I like the poster a lot. I think I have the plot figured out, but that’s my own fault for following news and filming of this movie so closely, and I could be wrong. Anyway, I’m really looking forward to seeing it.

  15. Chickie Baby says:

Hey, somebody hold my place in line for tickets! This will be the ONE movie about politics that I think I can manage to sit through—and all because of the three headlining men!

    See ya at the Oscars.

  16. maggiegrace says:

Kiki – you’ll learn that in jr. high, don’t worry!

  17. Kiki says:

Thank-you @Maggiegrace but I’m too old to go back to high school and English isn’t my native language. 😀 Thanks anyways!

  18. Aqua says:

As much as George may have an old movie star quality about him, and Ryan being the favorite hot, young actor. This movie has an outstanding cast and their is no doubt that a solid performance will be given by everyone.

  19. Aqua says:

Want to add that their is someone for everyone in this movie.

  20. LucyOriginal says:

The cast is amazing (PSH is awesome), I think the plot is very interesting and I do like George Clooney as a director. It’s a highly anticipated movie!!!

ps: Isn’t Marisa Tomei awesome too?

  21. elizabeth says:

    @ Lucy Original

    re: ps : Marisa Tomei

I just saw her on dvd in the Lincoln Lawyer and she was also very good in War Inc. with John Cusack. I think she is very underrated and has matured into a great actress, very solid in every role!

  22. Aqua says:

@ Lucy Original I think this is one movie that my husband will go see without kicking and screaming.I thing PSH is my husbands man crush lol. He’ll see any movie that he is in.As for me It’s Clooney and Gosling and yes, I think MT is terrific especially in the Wrestler.

  23. Ja says:

Interesting plot and excellent casting! Looking forward seeing this film for sure. Also, I want Ryan 🙂

  24. LucyOriginal says:

@Aqua: I cannot blame your husband: Clooney is Clooney and PSH is awesome! totally understand the kicking and screaming, and his crush, :).

@Elizabeth: I can go back to my cousing vinny and that romcom she played with RDJ “only you”. She is definitely underrated, but surely talented!

  25. miwome says:

The title suggests a betrayal (the Ides of March is when Brutus betrayed Caesar); from the trailer, I’d say it’s most likely Gosling’s character betraying Clooney’s. But maybe that’s what they WANT US TO THINK.

    Also: PAUL FREAKING GIAMATTI! YES!

  26. Aqua says:

I think their is going to be a strange twist to this because if their isn’t they have possibly given to much away already.

I love the movie my cousin Vinny especially the porch scene where she is explaining her biological clock ticking. It’s just too funny.

  27. Its like you read my mind! You seem to know so much approximately this, such as you wrote the book in it or something. I believe that you can do with a few percent to force the message home a little bit, but instead of that, this is fantastic blog. A fantastic read. I’ll definitely be back.
