Mila Kunis tells off a journalist in her native tongue, Russian

wenn9480168

The photos of Mila Kunis in the black dress are from last night, where she and Justin Timberlake went partying at Nobu in London. The photos of Mila in the pink dress are from last week, at a photo call for Friends With Benefits in Germany. She looks pretty-ish in the pink dress, I think, but she looks pretty wasted in the London pics. She and JT are certainly spending a lot of time together on this promotional tour, right? You think she finally gave it up? I think she might have. JT’s been trying to get on her for more than a year, and something tells me that his on-again whatever with Jessica Biel is on HIS terms, not hers, which means that he can still do whoever and whatever he wants (kind of the same as before).

But here’s my real reason for writing this – Mila Kunis speaking Russian! While Mila and JT were promoting FWB in Moscow last week, Mila answered questions in her native tongue. She was born in the Ukraine, and she immigrated to America (with her parents) when she was a young girl. From the way she speaks Russian, my guess is that she grew up speaking it in her home, with her family. Oh, and Mila sounds so hardcore in Russian. Like she’s ready to shank a Russian journo over something:

Apparently, the Russian reporter was trying to ask JT why he was doing movies and not music these days. Mila jumped in and basically said, “Why movies? Why not? What kind of question is that? Why are you here?” Yeah… she’s probably sleeping with him.

That’s pretty adorable. Her American accent is so think in Russian! (As I would expect it to be given how early she emigrated.)

i am no expert but going by the body language and how she keeps on tilting her head towards him unconsciously (or not unconsciously), i think they are totally humping each other.

i am frustrated, i think Mila deserves better than Douchey Timberlake

Sorry, following the post about Pippa Middleton’s skin color, I’m starting to get obsessed with celebrity fake tans now. Is Mila Kunis not every bit as orange as Pippa?? Apparently, this is the color du jour.

I actually think that is admirable to defend someone you care about. It doesn’t necessarily mean they are sleeping together. When you spend a lot of time with someone you inevitably start to bond unless they are a total douche.

Ha! That was really cool to hear Mila speak in her native tongue. I wish I was bilingual. I don’t know if it was a question that should have been taken so seriously. Alot of people would like Justin to make more music. I mean he started his career as a singer…so why isn’t he singing? Its a natural question to ask.

I think Mila looks soo pretty in all of the pics I love her eyes and OMG she is the only actress in the world who could ever come close to looking anywhere as gorgeous as Angie. Sometimes I see the Angie resemblance and then sometimes I don’t.

I agree, Kit, Timberlake is a total douche, in general, but specifically when it comes to being questioned about his music plans. Like you said, it’s how he made a name for himself, his music is wildly popular, so it’s a reasonable question to ask.

I love Mila Kunis but less so the more she’s around JT. Before JT she toed the line brilliantly of being sassy yet really funny and likeable. This outburst is definitely in the JT a-hole realm. (though saying it in what I assume is perfect Russian is pretty bad ass)

@MorticiansDoItBetter“I really like her, but if she gave it up to Timbersnake I will have lost some respect for her.”

I have to agree. The guy is such an arrogant douchebag (talented though he may be in more than one entertainment field).

I do think the reporter asking why he was doing movies (when he’s there specifically to promote a movie he’s in) came across quite rude. You could see that Justin’s ear-piece (to translate for him) seemed delayed, so he was behind in the questions & didn’t seem to know what was being asked.

In which case I could see why Mila jumped in to defend Justin, I don’t necessarily think they’re an item because of *that*. I’d do the same for any of my friends. But honestly, being together all this time, working on a romantic comedy with sex scenes all over the place… I wouldn’t be surprised. (I have a one track mind today. Even THIS reminds of Leann & Eddie, meeting while doing a movie about being in a romantic relationship.)

It seems like she has this personal agenda against any Russian person, which is absurd. She seems so defensive, and you can tell by the way she talks that she’s talking down to them, which makes her seem really petty and rude. She also did this to a Russian reporter when she was signing autographs a the premier. It seems like she has this bug up her ass that makes her think she’s better than everyone now. My stock on her is plummeting.

  23. Eve says:

Oh my…Timberlake is a real actor! We’re not allowed to ask about his music because he’s now in the right path to become the next Al Pacino!!!

Now, seriously…why can’t anyone say anything bad about his heinous “acting”? Why isn’t possible — even for respectable critics — to say anything negative about his pathetic attempts at acting? It’s painfully obvious how ridiculous his delivery of lines is yet everybody is diplomatic when it comes to talk about it.

Now I’m afraid he might actually get his Oscar — yes, HIS Oscar, because he totally thinks he can get one. In fact, he probably wonders why he doesn’t have one already!

    @ Atticus:

Forgot to add: I tried to watch The Social Network. And I managed to sit through it until he showed up on screen. I fast forwarded the rest of the movie because, honestly, even with all the editing (because Fincher had to edit that shit to hell and back in order to make his presence palatable) and the use of a montage, an effing montage in a David Fincher movie! — showing him talking and making gestures while Eisenberg nods his head and a song plays (therefore we can’t hear Timberlake) during that restaurant scene where they (Saverin, Zuckerberg and Parker) first met — he was still horrible. Like, cheesy soap opera horrible.

I think that unless you actually speak russian and know a bit of their ways in speaking, can you really tell if she’s being rude or not liking russians in general.

I’m half Egyptian and when I go back to Egypt and speak arabic my way of speaking automatically changes as does my way of conversing. I use my hands more to express myself (actually ALOT of handwaving!), I make “tsk” noises with my mouth, I even speak louder. And it’s not that I’m getting angry with the people, it’s just how people talk there.

Clearly, here, Mila is joking around since everyone is laughing pretty hard, no embarrassed chuckles.

@32. Angela: I have to agree with you. I’m kind of suprised with all this praise for her ability to speak her mother tongue, too. Sure, Russian may be a difficult language to learn, but that’s when you have to do it when you’re older, not when you’re raised speaking it. Actually, there are lots of people who are raised bilingual. It’s not a big deal.

I’m with Raven, I think you actually have to speak the language to really know whether she was being rude or not. Whenever I speak to my mom in Arabic, my non-Arabic speaking husband always asks why I’m being so rude and getting pissy even when I’m just speaking normally.

  34. Nah, nah & nah... says:

I LIKE this girl. She’s a likable b.i. and that’s a hard personality to pull off in Hollywood, Russia or anywhere else. She was 15 when she started the Jackie Burkhardt role, did it to a “t” back then and still does it quite well in other roles. Then, she came out of a Culkin relationship unscathed. She’s no joke.

I don’t think she’ll ever be as serious an actress as them, but she’s leading up to a Bette Davis/Joan Crawford-type of persona. The difference is her b.i. started out cute and grew up with her audience. And she’s kinda smart to boot. She’s got those dark, interesting, ethnically-ambiguous features, a perfect combination for a global celebrity.

This kid is gonna do some things someday (hopefully Timberlake-less). Watch.

    agreed Spinner.

And I don’t get the love for her. She comes off very condescending and rude. For someone who had a lull in their career (That 70′s show to Black Swan) you’d think she’d be a bit more grateful instead of acting like she’s got a stick up her ass about something. The other people in the clip were laughing but she looked deadly serious like she was going to shank that reporter.

And the funny thing is she kept JT from answering his own question. She put her hand up to him and whispered something and then continued to answer for him. yeah they’re totally doing it and something tells me she’s the top. I gues the character she played (Jackie) wasn’t so far off from her in real life.

Ok, watched it again, and after reading the comments about how, if you don’t know Russian it’s hard to tell if she’s being rude (very good point), and the comments noting everyone cracking up in the background…here’s a new theory:

Mila is totally making fun of Justin and mimicking what he’s said to reporters when asked about his music career. JT has no idea what she’s saying, which makes it all the funnier to everyone else in the room, who can. I like this theory. I’m going to go with it. And I don’t believe at all that they’re doing it. Wasn’t she born in Ukraine? Russian and Ukraine language are NOT the same. And honestly I don’t get the awe and all that over the fact she bitched out a journalist in her mother tongue. For English native-speaking folk it’s probably a big deal to have a second language and be bilingual – for most people all around the world it’s quite common and even necessary.

I’m under the impression that she’s neither russian nor ukranian. She’s said herself that she is a jew. A russian-speaking jew. Ethnic ukranians and ethnic russians are a totally different thing. Different languages, different cultures.

it might not seem a big thing to US americans but as a person coming from a country formerly occupied by Russia, I would definitely mind being called a russian, which americans like to do when it comes to people from a former republic of USSR. Simply because I am not one. Neither ethnically nor culturally.

So that’s why I feel confused about Mila’s heritage. A russian is not an ukranian is not a jew.

And it’s what he’s known best for! Seriously I don’t look at him and go “Oh that movie of his was so god!” It’s a valid question to ask him why he hasn’t done any music in awhile. And while Justin may be trying to become an actor and shed his music image he’ll never be able to–his NSYNC days will always haunt him. He will never be a good actor–go back to music Justin which is where you belong!

BTW, I know most on here think that Justin is a jerk but I actually like him. I find him entertaining and talented. Unlike all of the cool “in crowd”, I buy and listen to his music. I thought she was very cute about it and if she had been really rude there would not have been so much laughing. Her voice reminds me of my own when I speak in Romanian. I sound so much softer to myself and to my friends in English and then my friends laugh when I go to Romanian saying I sound so harsh but that’s the language. Eastern Europeans are alot harsher then Americans so I think she was just trying to hold her own and back up her friend. I like her more every time I see her.

Хорошая работа, Roxy! That’s pretty much what I heard.

Opinion on whether she was being rude from a Russian speaker: Eh. She was more being kind of sassy, until she said “pochemu vee zdeis,” which the way she said it, is a very harsh “Why are you here?!”

    @KLO

You’re half right. Yes, a Russian Jew – like me or Mila – isn’t technically a Russian, and in Russia, we don’t have much of a sense of Russian pride. HOWEVER, when you get to America and find yourself in places with other Russian speakers… whether they’re from Ukraine, Belarus, Russians Proper, whatever… you find a certain sense of camaraderie. And a lot of what would be considered “Russian pride” would just be doing things and celebrating holidays the way you always have, in a very Russian way.

First – half of the population of Ukraine speaks Russian. Other half speaks Ukrainian. So it’s not a big deal. Mila’s parents probably were speaking Russian in home so that’s why she speaks it.

And just like with Mila Jovovich (and same with Mila Kunis) – many people don’t understand that they didn’t emigrate from Ukraine. They emigrated from USSR. That was one big country. They (Mila and Mila) don’t see the big difference between Russia or Ukraine.

Mila Jovovich always travels to Russia and to Ukraine and when she is in Russia she calls Russia home. When she is in Ukraine she calls Ukraine home. That’s because she emigrated when it was all one country.

And did you notice how Ukrainian women slowly take over the Hollywood? :) First it was Mila Jovovich. Then it was Bond girl Olga Kurylenko. Then it was Vera Farmiga (Did you know that she was born in Passaic County, New Jersey. She did not speak English until the age of six, and was raised in a strict Ukrainian Catholic home. She attended a Ukrainian Catholic school, then went to public School. She was touring with a Ukrainian folk-dancing company in her teens..) And now it’s Mila Kunis….

And I really wish that that silly promotion of FWB would finally end. Justin is a very bad influence on Mila :) And why are they promoting it like it’s some Transformers or Harry Potter? It’s just a silly rom-com who underperform in USA.

@Sumodo1, @Mae East, @N.D. amd @Addie: Since you speak Russian, do you think Mila was really being rude? In other words, do you think she seriously meant “Why are you here?” in a bitchy way, or did she say it because that press conference was to do with their movie, so Mila sort of was joking around, saying “Hey, why are you here? Because of our movie! So what’s it got to do with his music right now?”. Just wondered if maybe it didn’t translate as it was intended. Just wondered.

Ok, so why is everyone using the word defend like Justin was being insulted. He asked him why he was doing more movies instead of music. The only way that’s an insult is if he believes one to be inferior to the other. He didn’t say he sucked at one or the other so I don’t see the insult or the need for a response other than to wer the question. How hard is it to say, “You know, I just like what I’m doing right now”. Jeez

Being bilingual is a special thing compared to a monoglot lol. Learning languages as a child(or working adult/immigrant) with few financial resources and parents who dont speak the language, makes it even harder to become fluent and persevere to higher levels. I’ve noticed that Russian is one of those languages where even a bland sentence like “can you pass the salt” comes out angry sounding to a non-speaker. German has the same thing. I don’t know why, maybe the syllables that are pronounced?

Why exactly do so many people think she’s being rude? Though I don’t speak Russian, her tone and mannerisms do not come across as rude whatsoever, and she has the entire room cracking up, everyone seems genuinely amused and entertained by her. I think a lot of people are jumping to conclusions and just hating on her for no good reason.

Justin definitely seems turned on by her speaking another language. I like her, she seems smart, sassy, and down-to-earth. She’s a breath of fresh air in the Hollywood world of brainless, arrogant snots.

I don’t think Mila is sleeping with Justin. I think she’d probably heard the question (yes, directed at JT, but still) one too many times during this press tour, and the guy asked it in sort of a rude-ish way. FWB has been getting good reviews, so I think Mila was feeling a bit defensive, like “Why WOULDN’T he be in some movies? He was good in our movie!” kinda thing.

It needs to be said that in Russia, it is unusual for people to bounce from one profession to another.
You choose a proffesion, you do it and you do it well.
Not surprising that this concept of singer to actor is not understood by the reporter.

Mila had no business being rude like that and shutting Justin up to answer for him, he is a grown ass man and had a translator..he could answer his daym self.

Ps. It sounded rude in Russian. She came across as quite imature and agressive.

  107. Shy says:

I wouldn’t say that Mila was too rude. First – the reporter who asked question was very rude. It was the way she sad it: “What are you doing here. Why are you doing movies”. I’m not surprised Mila answered that way. She was more like protecting Justin. She was tired of that question about music too.

By the way here is more Mila speaking russian. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjY1FvZR2mE&feature=related
She says that she left when she was 7. But she speaks russian very good giving the fact that she emigrated this early. And didn’t have too much of real practice. Her parents probably were speaking russian in home all the time. That’s where she learned.

As for Justin… I can’t stand douchebag too. But can you imagine that here he is promoting movie and every second reporter asks him about music and he has to answer. But he doesn’t have any answer since he doesn’t do any music at the moment. Can you imagine how annoying it is? Poor Justin.

And Mila tried to defend him but really… she embarrassed him so much with that statement. Like he is some 10 years old kid who got fight with other kids and his mommy steps in and defends him. So embarrassing.

  108. *Roxy* says:

A translator is always a bit late when it comes to delivering translation. Because he/she needs to understand/write down the speech, translate it and then to pronounce it. It always takes some seconds (5-7 seconds with simultaneous translation). Mila didn’t give Justin time to hear the translator and started answering.

The reporter’s question was meant to be ‘hard’ or badass (Why is music not enough for you? = Do you think you have any talent for acting?). Others are laughing cauze Mila sort of showed the reporter her place (Justin IS working! And YOU are working here too. It is just work.). It was a bit uncalled for. But she gets a pass on this one.

I’m sorry, but if she had said that in English at an American press conference, I have a feeling people would have been less charmed by it. lol It’s just cause she sounds hot speaking russian that everyone is charmed. The tone she uses may sound far less rude than we assume. Russian has a very different tonality to English. Additionally she came from a country that was under Russian dictatorship for a long time, it’s entirely possible that she does feel antipathy towards Russia and her people.

It’s funny to me how much things can be taken out of context when have not seen the entire exchange. It was an unecessary question the way it was put by the reporter, but it started with a different reporter asking JT when he was going to put out another CD and he was obviously frustrated with the question (which I am sure he has heard constantly througout the press junket) and he jokingly said Mila was producing his next CD. And turned to Mila to respond.

Because they HAVE heard the question over and over, Mila was able to recite his answer as to why he isn’t doing music right now. That led to this exchange that is now getting played to death on the internet, and then after what you see in this clip JT spoke and gave a very reasonable answer explaining how he enjoys the collaborative effort in movies, and that there are many similarites to performing on stage and doing a CD as there is to making a film.

I don’t get it. I think she has a beautiful mouth and she’s one of the most beautiful women in the world. Mila has never made a big deal out of being Russian or Ukrainian…To assume she hates Russians is just plain stupid. I’m sure in Hollywood she works with many american’s, ukrainians and russians. Those of us who came to the states at a young age probably don’t have the same prejudices against each other as those left in those countries. I didn’t hear the entire interview but, I do think Mila was trying to be funny and a little bad ass. Sometimes that doesn’t go over too well. Although, all the journalists seemed to be laughing. It would be interesting to hear what the woman who asked the question said about the exchange and others that were at the press conference. We’ve heard a lot of opionions on the internet but, I’m not sure if any of them came from journalist that were there so we’re not getting info in context. Mila is a Ukrainian Jew but spoke russian/ukrainian at home. She has a ukrainian accent and some of her words are ukrainian which would make sense…the languages are close but it’s like the difference between americans who are from the south, east coast and midwest.
