Diane Kruger’s apron-corset Chanel dress: cute or weird/fug?

I had a photo of Diane Kruger’s red carpet gown earlier today, in the post about The Ides of March premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Diane actually wore two looks last night – the gold Elie Saab gown for the red carpet, and then this odd Chanel Couture Fall 2011 dress for the parties. Diane is a Chanel girl, and I don’t think she’s capable of admitting when Karl Lagerfeld fails. But this dress is a fail. It’s like a too-small, budget, tacky little 1990s t-shirt dress, with a stiff, gaudy black apron-corset overlay. It’s hideous! Why does Diane do this? Why does Lagerfeld do this to her?!?

Here are a few more photos of Diane in the Elie Saab on the red carpet. I swear she’s giving me pregnancy vibes here. You can yell at me, go ahead. But I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Joshua Jackson knocked her up. He should! Those would be some lovely German-Canadian babies. I think I’m seeing phantom (?) pregnancy because Diane has gained a little weight. It looks good on her. Her boobs look bigger too?

    (1) First dress is awful
    (2) Braided hair is cute – but too messy
    (3) Second dress is pretty
    (4) Hair is awful – needs to be brushed, cut and styled.

  2. bagladey says:

    The Chanel dress is awful.

  3. Jackson says:

Oh no. Just baaaad. The thing with DK is that when she misses, she usually misses big. And this monstrosity misses big. It kind of reminds me of the old ‘workout leotard’ circa Jane Fonda. But a sparkly version. Just all wrong. The pale gown is ok but not loving that color on her, or the neckline. Or the hair. Ugh. She can do sooo much better!

  4. LadyJane says:

She looks like an extra in a Disney On Ice. A sequined villager.

  5. Sue says:

I kind of like the 1st dress.

  6. horizonte says:

the chanel dress is terrible! she’s giving serious blake lively vibes with that outfit, and the hair.

  7. brin says:

It would look bad on anyone else but she can pull it off, imo.

  8. TQB says:

God she is so beautiful. I confess – the boobs make me suspicious, also – but it’s just because I want it to be true.

As for the outfits she is always better with her best accessory: Joshua.

  9. Toe says:

The guy looks like Rowan Atkinson lost son.
    The dress is not good.

  10. Ron says:

Looks like Judy Jetson’s school uniform.

  11. Ellie says:

I really can’t stand this chick? Who is she and what does she do? She looks like she has a stuck up personality. Boring!

  12. nikki says:

She is so pretty it kills me!
I like both dresses a lot.

  13. Jb says:

I love her style- she is gorgeous and can do no wrong.

  14. Marianne says:

I love the Elie Saab dress, hate the Chanel dress. It looks like she’s wearing a vest over a dress…it’s just weird.

  15. danielle says:

I like the first dress too. I think the extra weight looks really good on her face, softens it up.

  16. taxi says:

“The Sound of Music” styled by KL for Chanel? Awful. Poor Diane, has to wear this crap. She’s a beautiful girl & she looks much better with the 5-10 lbs she’s gained.

She was great in “Inglorious Basterds” & gorgeous in “Midnight Clear”.

I’d like to see her do madcap comedy, like Carole Lombard or early Katharine Hepburn-Cary Grant.

  17. Liz says:

Fail on Chanel. And on Diane’s stylist

  18. lrm says:

i think she can pull anything off.
she is beautiful and also has a certain spark of life around her….like she’s not so vacant as many celebs.
she exudes vitality, even when she is super skinny, but yea, she is looking ‘fuller’ her, relative to her, of course….

    maybe pregnancy time will tell.

  19. NeoCleo says:

The Chanel looks fine on her. In fact she’s beautiful in all the photos. PERIOD.

  20. Elisha says:

I remember in a magazine interview, I don’t recall which one, she said that the one thing she hated was vulgarity, fashion wise. I thought, “true” but then I also thought, “F U, you 90 lbs, stuck up, twat! Who are you to decide who is vulgar or not? We don’t all have ridiculous amount of funds to throw away on clothes like you. Oh, & you sucked as Helen in Troy. Nobody would start a war over someone as insignificant looking as you.

  21. John Wayne Lives says:

She always looks so beautiful to me. But the 2nd dress has an odd, unflattering fit.

  22. chris says:

I find Diane pretty, but in a Kate Bosworth or January Jones way: beautiful face, fashion-oriented but ultimately vanilla-bland (in terms of passion and personality).
Why is she even at the festival and detracting the spotlight from the other Ides of March actresses who are there to promote it?

  23. Cleo says:

I love how Karl Lagerfeld gives his fellow Hun in Paris the absolute worst and unChanel Chanel outfits like this Oktoberfest-derived bullshit! Hahhaa! They’re such whores!

  24. AS says:

The Chanel dress is amazing, you all have no clue!

  25. huh says:

    What´s that dress? A Dirndl?

Please, no pregnancy rumors for this woman. She was in Canada last week and she didn´t have those boobs (push-up bra?) or that hair (hair extensions?)

  26. DWB says:

    Elisa,
No problem with her defining vulgarity for you. You managed to come across that way with no help from anyone. I can’t imagine disliking someone as much as you seem to without having ever met the poor girl.

  27. Claire78 says:

I love her – I think I want to be her!!

  28. huh says:

Claire78, you want to be a cold, cynical, self-righteous bi*** ?

  29. Micah says:

I honestly don’t get her appeal.

  30. smh says:

lmao what is that Chanel dress… love the second one on her though. She needs to keep this romantic/classic look imo

  31. Claire78 says:

At ‘Huh’ – I have never heard a bad word to be honest. Just only liked her by the interviews I had seen, like Graham Norton, she came across well and I do like her look, as well as Inglorious Bastards. But do you know something I don’t???

  32. Elisha says:

@DWB which I assume stands for Dumb While Bitching 😉

I was JOKING! Well, sort of… I do think she’s stuck up & that whole interview stunk of someone who thinks there ish don’t stink (pun intended). But, I was sure the last part of comment would come off as me as exaggerating which was my intention. I’m a huge Iliad fan so my comment was more directed towards a fictional character than Diane. Helen is such a bee-yotch & she was probably smelly too, lol. I don’t hate anyone, especially someone I don’t know personally. So relax, Diane, it wasn’t perdonal. Oops, I meant DWB 🙂

  33. coco says:

    Always love Diane, always.

  34. betty says:

Jaysus, what the hell happened to Pacey?

  35. really says:

    Viva La Deutschland!

Even in not perhaps the best of fashion……. Diane Kruger is still and always BEAUTIFUL lady.

  36. nemera says:

I never understand the actresses that are known for their “fashion”

She gets more attention for what she wears. I think she is very pretty, but agree with another poster, that is noting very interesting about her.

    Don’t know why

  37. Mag says:

The Chanel is chic. I am not a Karl fan – he’s been losing it steadily for a while now. However, that dress is elegant – I think a belt could have broken it up. Like a jewelled art deco belt.

  38. machiavelli says:

    The dresses – meh.

Her face looks much softer. Nice.

  39. Blithe says:

The Chanel is fug, imo. But the other dress looks amazing on her. She’s such a gorgeous woman!

  40. Cleo says:

The next time Karl Lagerfeld tries to screw over his BFF, she should send the outfit to former child runway model James King who still has the kind of body that should be required to wear these kinds of outfits. Hell, her body should be required for a happy life!
