Madonna is aware of, claims to be confused by Lady Gaga’s “obsessions” with her

wenn5712689

Ever since they handed Madonna a microphone at the Venice Film Festival, she’s been on a virtual rampage. Even hydrangeas haven’t been immune to Madge’s scornful attitude, and it certainly doesn’t help matters when journalists ask her about Lady Gaga. Until now, Madonna’s stayed pretty quiet about Gaga, but I think that Gaga’s success has led to the very-rehearsed appearance of Madonna seeming honored or at least content with the obvious stream of homage. Yes, Gaga overdoes it at times, especially with the “Alejandro” video as well as the “Born This Way” song. Maybe Madge has been pushed to the limit, or maybe she’s just being indirectly nasty:

Lady Gaga has spoken openly about her love for the Material Girl and has paid homage to the pioneering pop star both in song and performance style. But it appears that her admiration society isn’t a mutual one.

When a French newspaper recently asked about her superfamous adoring fan, Madonna didn’t have much to say in the way of encouragement-or appreciation.

“As for Lady Gaga, I have no comment to make about her obsessions having to do with me because I don’t know whether her behavior is rooted in something deep and meaningful, or superficial,” Madonna reportedly told Le Soir.

Madonna’s rep, Liz Rosenberg didn’t immediately have a comment regarding the interview, but she told E! News, “I do know that [Madonna] has said many supportive things about Gaga over the years.”

The other diva’s rep hasn’t yet returned a request for comment, but…any perceived Madonna diss has got to kind of suck for Gaga, who, when “Born This Way” came out, was accused by the hoi polloi of ripping off Madonna’s “Express Yourself.”

After performing the hit tune at the Grammys, Gaga said on The Tonight Show that she had received an email from Madonna’s camp in support of the song.

“You know, there is really no one that is a more adoring and loving Madonna fan than me,” Gaga said. “I am the hugest fan personally and professionally.”

Madonna’s rep later told E! News, however, that she did not know of any such email coming from their corner.

[From E! Online]

So was what Madonna said really a diss, or was Madonna sort of passive-aggressively trying to extract herself from really answering the question? Probably both, and I also feel like Gaga would probably describe her own behavior as both “deep and meaningful” and “superficial” as well. However, but I think that Madonna could have answered the question better (probably by not mentioning the word “obsession”) without coming off so bitter, although something might have been lost in translation.

fp_7656401_gaga_lady_fp4_01_21

While it’s no secret that Gaga has based much of her persona upon earlier Madonna incarnations, I’m sort of wondering whether Madonna isn’t also fixated upon Gaga as well. For what it’s worth, the now-defunct News of the World published a story last year that stated, “Madonna is absolutely obsessed with GaGa” and really wanted Gaga to open for her on world tour. Obviously, that didn’t happen in part because Gaga’s been on her own never-ending Monster Ball Tour, but I tend to believe that Madonna probably did make the offer in the interest of placing Gaga under her thumb and letting her know who’s still in charge, you know? I also think that Madonna is more worried than she’d ever let on about Gaga eventually taking over Madonna’s pop crown. I’m probably in the minority here with my opinion that, sure, Gaga might be a complete hack, but she’s a pretty talented hack. Gaga also knows a lot more about music than Madonna, who is merely a songstress that can occasionally play a few chords on a guitar. Madonna is worried. And Madonna should be worried.

Admittedly, it’d be great if Gaga could drop the “ART” obsession for a little while because that particular routine is getting old. In these stills (which are not unlike her latest Bazaar cover shoot) from the set of her “You and I” video, she makes a decent start of looking semi-normal, but don’t expect it to last. Gaga will be back to freaky and annoying very soon, and I’ll probably have to eat my words.

    Madonna is JEALOUS!

  2. kerfuffles says:

Madonna is an amazing songwriter in her own right, I’ll giver her that.

But the biggest difference to me between Madonna and Gaga is that Gaga can actually SING. She has a really, really good voice while Madonna’s is pretty dreadful.

I have no doubt Madonna resents the hell out of Lady Gaga. Madonna is obviously terribly insecure about aging, so of course she is going to resent the new up and comer a couple of decades her junior.

Sad that Madonna can’t just support Gaga as a fellow artist and female, but that’s not how Madonna appears to roll.

  3. Moneypenny says:

Madonna is definitely jealous–she’s just pissed Gaga is in the spotlight…especially because she’s in the spotlight as Madonna v2.0.

  4. jen says:

I wish they would both retire.

  5. DethHammer says:

This was the video where I said you can really tell how Gaga has tweaked her face over the years.

As I said in the previous Gaga post, her eyes were not that slanted two years ago (I suspect she’s been getting Botox there) and her nose is smaller than what it was from about six years ago. Plus her cheeks are much rounder even though she’s lost weight, so I think she gets fillers too.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with getting work done, but considering she went on a tirade last time in Bazaar magazine on how all plastic surgery “promotes insecurity”, it’s hard to not to think she’s just a pretentious douche about many things.

  6. curleque says:

She’s jealous of Gaga’s talent and youth. Madonna is getting old, and she never could sing or act, for that matter. But she is/was a fabulous performer and a great businesswoman. Madonna knows that Gaga is riding on her coat tails, and this diss is as tactful as Madonna could possibly be.

  7. ADS says:

Madonna has nothing to fear from Gaga at all. As far as I’m concerned all Gaga has over her is youth. There is not one original bone in the young upstarts body. Gaga’s career a one non stop homage to numerous and TRULY iconic female artists. And because her antics are so ridiculously over the top, the public will soon (hopefully) tire of her.

  8. Sloane Wyatt says:

First, the length and style of Madges’ hair is soo aging. Secondly, she’s ridiculous in her pseudo nun’s habit. Madge needs to take a page out of Ellen Barkin’s book on how to age and be sexy. Sorry Sweetie, you can’t pull off the pop tart look when you’re closer to being a granny.

Thirdly, Madonna could have said ‘I have no comment to make about her influences having to do with me’ instead of using a bitter and derogatory term like ‘obsessions’.

I could go on, but I’m tired of counting.

Whip her with soggy Hydrangeas until she straightens up and flies right!

  9. mln76 says:

Madonna is on my shit list right now. But there is no denying that Gaga’s music and videos are basically remakes of old Madonna songs. And I do think Gaga’s talented too but she needs to give it a rest already.

  10. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Probably something lost in translation thats why I am always hesitant to believe any celeb interviews done in a foreign country. Madonna and Gaga did SNL together, I don’t think there is beef between them. Madonna isn’t the only singer Gaga is inspired by. Gaga is inspired by many artists. Which I love, Gaga HERSELF has an amazing voice and dances and sings…when she does tire of being inspired or paying homage to those who inspire her she is gonna be even better than she is now. I don’t give a f*ck what anyone says Gaga does have her own voice if people would just bother to listen.

  11. The Original Ashley says:

In the 3rd pic where she’s holding the dress up, I can see Madonna being envious. Look how young she looks! For once she looks her age and it’s evident that if she plays her cards right she could stay in the industry for a very long time to come. (Madonna’s pushing over the hill and her antics [crotch thrusting, etc. *shudder*] will get old soon).

Madonna got past Britney, but I don’t know if she can surpass when it comes to Gaga. Especially when you take into account the way Gaga treats her fans. She’s building a solid fanbase by treating them with respect and lavishing praise on them. Madonna’s always been an above it all bitch and when you start to contrast her against Gaga it’s clear it’s Gaga’s camp you want to be in (she won’t throw you shade for giving her a hydrangea).

  12. Juliette says:

I think Madonna has turned into a snooty old bitch. First the hydrangea comment (try being gracious cow, now everyone knows you favorite flower), the the ridiculous fake hoity toity accent.

She is so full of herself. I have loved Madonna forever and loved her music but she has a bad attitude. She should be flattered that she is influencing so many artists.

I am sure that she has been influenced by artists in career, you don’t see them being all assholey about it.

  13. Just U says:

@Ads I completely agree with you.
Madonna has had a groundbreaking, innovative and controversial career for nearly 30 years. What does she have to fear from a rip off ‘artist’ with about as much originality as a Playboy Playmate.
I would think it irks Gaga that every time her new music is mentioned its instantly compared to Madonna. (I also bet Madonna secretly loves it, no new music but lots of press )

  14. Whatamess! says:

Funny she is complaining about Gaga being obsessed with her when she did the same thing with Marilyn Monroe..Madonna is also not original..Her mere association with Marilyn cheapened her(Marilyn’s)image..bitch needs to get over herself

  15. Turtle Dove says:

How many young women have been compared to Queen Madge and have had the same steam and longevity? Britney and ….. that’s it. They have all fallen by the wayside. Whitney – bye. Cindy – nope. Christina – adios. And the list goes on and on. They come up and go down either by their own undoing or lack of appeal with the current market.

I used to like Gaga a lot, but she’s turning into a bizzaro, one note tune. Gaga was wise in not going on tour with Madonna. If Gaga’s a study in pop culture and media then she knows that anyone who works with Madonna has their career cut short – like a performance death kiss (Right, Christina?!). Again… the only person who was immune was Brit; although, it didn’t look good for her for awhile, and she still doesn’t have the umpf that Madge still has.

  16. Jaded says:

There isn’t an ounce of unique talent in Madonna – she’s made a career out of ripping off “latest trends” and making them her own. She has a mediocre singing voice, what she calls dancing is no more than gymnastic stripper pole nonsense, but she’s good at one thing….being a complete c*nt to people in order to get her way. That and shameless self-promotion any way she can get it has gotten her to the top, not true talent. George Harrison said she was “a drop of talent in an ocean of ambition” after directing her and Sean Penn in Shanghai Surprise, a total dog of a movie, as are all her movies.

  17. danielle says:

Madonna and Christina have both whined about Gaga copying them….jealousy!

  18. Anaya says:

I totally love Madonna even when she’s being a C-U Next Tuesday. I don’t want to make a major deal out of her comments towards Lady GaGa nor her hydrangeas hate because it’s not such a serious thing to me. Madonna’s who she is and doesn’t make any apologies for it. That’s part of her appeal or at least that’s part of the reason why I love her like I do. šŸ™‚

  19. neelyo says:

Unfortunately, Lady Gaga skipped over the fun Madonna period and went straight to the pretentious , sour, faux-English accented Madonna and it’s an uncanny impersonation!

  20. SueAnn says:

    Gross

  21. Jayna says:

Anaya, rock on. And Madonna has always been supportive of young pop acts. She mentions Britney and has mentioned Katy Perry, supporting their music. She went on Saturday Night Live with Gaga, and Gaga even danced with her at a club dancing to each other’s music. Gaga told that story. I can’t see Madonna putting down Gaga.

BUT this whole Born This Way era has been odd. It started during The Fame Monster era. Dressing like her in places in videos and then the Alejandro video had so many ripoffs of Madonna videos in it. Then out comes Born This Way song and all the comparisons and she gets up at the Grammys and thanks Whitney Houston for inspiration. Lol it was a bizarre diss. Then she goes go trying to shock with the Judas video at Easter. Now gender-bending Yet Gaga goes out of her way to never mention her but all the others that influence her. I don’t blame her . But she is so busy trying to shock at warp speed that she uses iconic ideas of Madonna. Madonna’s shocking themes actually were widely spaced out and a lot of sweet songs or soulful songs were in-between – Cherish, True Blue, Live to Tell on and on. Madonna has never spoken badly of Gaga or any young pop star. She’s kind of motherly to them. I’m sure she is perplexed.

Madonna sells out to stadiums. She would never have a young dance popster on her bill. She doesn’t need it.

  22. Sofie says:

you guys really hate madonna don’t you…well bedhead you forgot to mention one detail:
Liz Rosenberg has denied the quote, telling Mail Onlineā€¦

    ā€œThis is not true.
Madonna did not say anything negative about Lady Gaga during her press conferenceā€

all your posts about madonna are negative…i mean yep i know she’s no angel but she’s a human being after all ..and you guys would just love to see her feuding with lady gaga…is that what you want..!

  23. Jayna says:

@JustU, spot on. The copying Maddona thing has been a thorn in Gaga’s side, not Madonna’s. It always ends up highlighting Madonna’s briiliant iconic videos.

  24. SarahD says:

@Jayna & Sofie I completely agree with you :D….and yes ..celebitchy posts only negative STORIES about M…give her a break

  25. Jayna says:

Madonna’s last two tours were highest grossing solo tours of all time for male or female. She has a groundbreaking deal with LiveNation. People believe everything a gossip rag says.

  26. Riana says:

Honestly I think Gaga has more to be scared off than Madonna.

Madge has been in the game for decades and is incredibly respected.

Gaga however is only a few years in and already the public seems to have turned against her. Criticism is coming in harder and faster. People in general seem less impressed. At the MTV Awards she only had the young fans in the audience cheering while the other musicians stared at her like she was a lunatic.

I think the backlash is coming for Gaga, the oddity which enamored people once now seems to have them yawning.

At the end of the day Madonna had her career. She has her fanbase. She directs and has a clothing line. While Gaga is running through her music career at warp speed.

  27. Nick says:

Sure madona looks great .not gaga G_mother

  28. Nick says:

Gaga just looks sick and bad

  29. SarahD says:

MAdonna’s figure is amazing…she’s pretty fit for a 50+ and her arms are looking less muscular these days…lovely

  30. Minty says:

    @Whatamess!:
I totally agree. Madonna ripped off Marilyn’s image for many years. Examples: she copied photos of Norma Jeane/MM sitting barefoot on the road in her Burning Up video; in a scene from Who’s That Girl, she copied MM’s Life Magazine cover; she wore the same costume and rode a circus elephant, just like MM did at Madison Square Garden, in a Japanese TV commercial; Truth Or Dare poster copied one of MM’s looks in Bus Stop; her 1991 Oscar appearance duplicated Marilyn’s image at How To Marry A Millionaire premiere; she duplicated many MM photos in April 1991 issue of Vanity Fair; also copied MM in Hard Candy promotional photos. It wasn’t just Material Girl. She regularly used Marilyn to promote herself then later disparaged Marilyn in interviews. Let’s not forget Madonna also copied Marlene Dietrich, Jean Harlow, Brigitte Bardot(Cherish video), and Carole Lombard (one scene in Vogue video). Bitch was NEVER original.

“This Used To Be My Playground” video is a rip off of Boy George’s “To Be Reborn” video. “Love Profusion” video is a rip off of Billie Piper’s “Honey To The Bee” video. Madonna was sued for copyright infringement of the work of photographer Guy Bourdin in her “Hollywood” video. She lost. Frozen is banned in Belgium by court order because the beginning of the track plagiarized another song. Erotica (both single and album) are banned in Lebanon because the song plagiarized a song by Lebanese singer Fairuz. Fairuz sued and reached an undisclosed settlement with Madonna. The lyrics and singing style of Justify My Love are by Ingrid Chavez, who sued and received an undisclosed settlement and co-writing credit with Madonna and Lenny Kravitz. Even the song “Ray Of Light” is not original. It’s a remake of Curtiss Maldoon’s “Sepheryn”. The lyrics of Sky Fits Heaven copied a poem recited in a Gap commercial, FFS! Madonna is a greedy, fame hungry, mediocre hack. Her real talent is manipulation, self-promotion, plagiarism, and manufactured controversy. She’s fooled plenty of people. It’s amazing how blind her fans are to the published facts. At least Gaga has the grace (whether genuinely felt or not) to publicly acknowledge those who have “influenced” her.

  31. Ron says:

Men in the media love nothing more than to pit women against each other. And you know what they love even more, the women who buy into the media manipulated fight. It sells more tabloids ladies.

  32. Skinnybetch says:

The video of her bitching about flowers and her talking shit about gaga is all because she has movie to promote. Oldest trick in the book! Madonna has become so fucking boring an predictable. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  33. winderkindt says:

Madonna: “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?”
(schemes to give apple to GaGa)

  34. corey says:

It didn’t seem like a diss to me. It sounded more like she was responding to the reporter, or critics that have made claims about Gaga being obsessed. She’s always been so gracious about Gaga, and that should not be discounted just because of one comment that probably simply wasn’t articulated well.

  35. gg says:

Madge needs to learn that bitterness is oh so unattractive, and she cannot afford to indulge in same.

She needs to copy Gaga with the unfailing graciousness towards other performers instead of the Cranky Old Irrelevant Fading Bag routine.

  36. Kimbob says:

I do think Madonna is jealous of Gaga. I’m not a Gaga fan, but I must give credit where it’s due…Gaga does have a beautiful singing voice…you can’t take that away from her. Madonna has always had a barely tolerable singing voice.

I really appreciate that bloggers have noted that Madonna is not an original, as well.

One other thing…if this quote from Madonna about Gaga is true and verbatim, what does this say about how “spiritual” Madonna is? What happened to all the influence of Kabbalah? And just to remind…what about her “real spiritual” comment about an innocent fan giving her hydrangeas?

Madonna either needs to work on herself spiritually, & clean it up, or become a recluse.

  37. cailinos says:

How interesting to see Lady G more or less sans fard..often wondered. Nice looking, I think.

May I take this opportunity to decry the repeated refrain about Madonna (whom I neither love nor loathe) Quit saying she looks great for 50+! 50+ in 2011 is easy, girls. 50 doesn’t mean decrepitude, if you don’t mind! *rant over*

  38. LeeLoo says:

If I had to choose between Lady Gaga and Madonna, I’m choosing Lady Gaga.
I’m a closet Gaga fan. But I really hope she stays with this nude natural image, it suits her. She does seem a lot less stuck up and pretensious than Madonna but I wish she’d stop trying so hard.

    @dethhammer
I’m not seeing the plastic surgery. Her face looks too gaunt to have fillers in it. Plus her nose looks exactly the same but at angles in a couple shots it does look smaller. I would chalk the eyes up to how they put on her eye makeup.

  39. Original Tiffany says:

Gaga’s legs! Bruised, yucky and gross. Hey, it’s the first time I’ve ever seen her wear flats.

  40. Ale says:

Gaga will never be one third of what Madonna is, she may not have a great voice but still manages to move me much more than Gaga.

Madonna was a breath of fresh air and brought emotion into 80’s music which was at the time dominated by dull, soulless, cold, predictable and overrated new wave british bands. Borderline, Like a Prayer, Live to Tell and Lucky Star shit all over Gaga’s songs.

Regardless of anyhing Madonna fought hard for her place and didn’t have anything handed to her nor an undeserving hype machine behind her convincing us she was the second coming of christ to distract the US from the Vietnam War like George Harrison.

  41. Ycnan says:

God, i used to love madonna so much. But that thing with the flowers (to a fan no less) and this gaga thing. she is such a bitter bitch.

  42. Jayna says:

@Ale, so true. Madonna always said she didn’t have a great voice. But she has a nice voice with a lovely tone on her ballads. Gaga has great range, but her tone doesn’t move me and she doesn’t write true ballads, more cabaret piano songs as ballads and only one an album. I own all of Gaga’s music. So enjoy some of it, especially Edge of Glory and Dance in the Dark, The Queen.

I tend to listen to Madonna’s later work from mid 90s on, though I own most of her music. On a whim I bought Something To Remember, a compilation of ballads by Madonna from the ’80s to ’93. I was stunned. It’s so lush and romantic, sad, hopeful and her voice is beautiful on it. It’s a very sophisticated album and has songs like This Used To Be My Playground, Take a Bow, You’ll See, Love Don’t Live Here Anymore, Rain, Oh Father, I Want You, Live to Tell. Anyone who was a fan of her ballads preRay of Light I highly recommend it.

  43. cookie says:

The big problem with Lady Gaga is despite her amazing persona and the effort she puts into this, her shows etc the music is just plain awful. Bland and repetitive. Madonnas music was miles better in the same genre, no contest.

  44. Flan says:

Original Ashley has a good point.

Lady Gaga is very nice to her fans and showers them with love and respect.

Like that far more than artists who just talk about how normal they really are, do a few hand-waves and then disappear, not giving a *whatever four letter word you’d like to insert*.

  45. shea says:

Well at least that Madonna is pretty & sexy during her younger days… while Gaga is soo NOT or EVER!!!

  46. Onyx XV says:

That’s OK, Madonna, I’m confused by Lady Caca’s very existence. And why anyone gives her “music” the time of day. She is a no-talent poser of the highest order. She can’t fade into obscurity fast enough.

  47. faye says:

ROFL, I can guarantee that it’s all superficial with that one. Nothing she does is deep.

  48. samab says:

in gaga’s second pic it seems she has kind of a third leg…other than that they’re both boring and full of herselves.

  49. coucou says:

Regarding the Hydrangeas, either she’s developing Tourette’s syndrome or it’s men…oh…pause.

Thanks to Jaded for sharing that genius George Harrison quote, so good that i’ll repeat it here: “She’s a drop of talent in an ocean of ambition.”

It’s kind of a mixed compliment. And over the years, Madge has become a Diva of the Highest Order. Her pure ambition, originality, and staying power has earned her that title, no question.

I think that’s what’s always bothered me about Gaga Googoo, she’s been frontin’ like an established diva from day one, and i’m not buying it. I’d be curious to know if Lourdes is into her schtick.

  50. Waldemar says:

“Gaga also knows a lot more about music than Madonna…”

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

    *deep breath*

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

The fact that you were serious makes it even funnier.

  51. Seal Team 6 says:

    @Waldemar:

Not a fan of Lady G’s music, and I didn’t write the original post you snarked on, but Stefani Germanotta studied music, musical theatre, and songwriting at a very, very respected and difficult program at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. A friend’s niece has went through the same program, and it is 100% true to say Lady gag knows more about music than Madonna. ALOT more.

I haven’t enjoyed Madonna’s music in many, many years.

I also think Madonna should be flattered by G’s nod to her. But, Madge has never been one to self reflect.

  52. dear kaiser says:

Hey Minty, what you say is all documented here w/proof & pictures

  53. Amanda says:

Madonna is jealous? Everyone on here is commenting that. But I disagree. Maybe she is sick of lady gaga copying everything she does!

  54. Fantastic page, Thank you for that facts. I found itrather useful.Might in the process get a quick plug for our designer t-shirt range as Now I am at this point. Thankyou again

  55. Edward says:

Damn, I can’t believe you folks believe such a trash like this piece of gossip.
It saddens me that nowadays teenagers can’t tell right from wrong. Go read books, kids, and pray for brains.
